Wicked (2024 film)

  • Wicked, the 2024 musical fantasy film directed by Jon M. Chu, drew some unwelcome aerial visitors early in production. Paparazzi flew over the Munchkinland set in Ivinghoe, England, by hang glider, with GoPro cameras strapped to their feet. Their goal was to leak photos and video. Ariana Grande later described the shoot as "a teeny, little secret student thing" that felt small and private until the Daily Mail was hand gliding over the set.

The film adapts the first act of a stage musical that was loosely based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel. That novel re-imagined L. Frank Baum's 1900 book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Wicked is set in Oz before Baum's story begins. It follows the early friendship between Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and her schoolmate Galinda, who becomes Glinda the Good. Cynthia Erivo plays Elphaba, and Grande plays Glinda.

Three questions run through the story of this film. How does a beloved stage show make the leap to the screen? Why did a project announced years before shooting take so long to reach cameras? And what did Chu and his collaborators change along the way? The answers begin with a pitch made long before the musical existed.

  • In the 1990s, actress Demi Moore, producer Suzanne Todd and writer Linda Woolverton pitched Universal Pictures a film of Maguire's novel. Woolverton was hired to write the screenplay, and Robert Zemeckis was considered as a possible director. Whoopi Goldberg, Claire Danes, Salma Hayek and Laurie Metcalf were among the actresses who had shown interest in adapting the book. They were also considered for the lead roles, along with Michelle Pfeiffer, Emma Thompson and Nicole Kidman.

By 1998, however, composer Stephen Schwartz had persuaded Universal and Marc Platt, then its head of production, to turn the book into a stage musical instead. Winnie Holzman joined as scriptwriter. The show, titled Wicked, opened at the Gershwin Theatre on Broadway in 2003, with Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. It became the fourth-longest-running show in Broadway history and has won three Tony Awards.

Universal began planning a screen version of the musical in 2011. Chenoweth, Menzel, Lea Michele and Amy Adams were all rumored as possible leads. J. J. Abrams, Rob Marshall, James Mangold and Ryan Murphy were mentioned as directors. In 2012, after the screen success of Les Misérables, Platt announced that the film was going ahead and aimed for a 2016 release.

In 2016, Universal announced a release date of the 20th of December 2019, with Stephen Daldry directing. Daldry was reported to be considering Lady Gaga and Shawn Mendes for the roles of Elphaba and Fiyero. In May 2017, Schwartz said the film would feature "at least two" new songs.

On the 31st of August 2018, Universal put the film on hold to fit its production schedule and gave its release date to the film adaptation of Cats. A new date of the 22nd of December 2021 was announced on the 8th of February 2019. On the 1st of April 2020, the studio paused the project again because of the COVID-19 pandemic and handed the 2021 date to Sing 2.

On the 20th of October 2020, it was announced that Daldry had left because of scheduling conflicts. On the 2nd of February 2021, Chu was named as his replacement. Alice Brooks was confirmed as cinematographer in August 2021.

  • In November 2021, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were cast as Elphaba and Glinda. Grande first auditioned for Elphaba, after a miscommunication led Chu to believe she preferred that role. She then auditioned three times for Glinda. Grande said she began acting lessons a year before her first audition. In her words, "transforming her voice to sing Glinda's soprano parts took months." Dove Cameron, Reneé Rapp and Amanda Seyfried were also reported to have auditioned for Glinda.

Both stars already had history with the material. In 2012, Grande recorded "Popular Song," a remix of "Popular." In 2018, she performed "The Wizard and I" in the NBC special A Very Wicked Halloween. Erivo sang "I Couldn't Be Happier," an excerpt from "Thank Goodness," in the 2021 PBS special Wicked in Concert.

In September 2022, Jonathan Bailey was reported as Fiyero, beating Cooper Koch, Nick Jonas and Joe Jonas for the part. Jeff Goldblum entered final talks to play the Wizard in October 2022. By December, Ethan Slater, Michelle Yeoh, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James, Keala Settle, Aaron Teoh and Colin Michael Carmichael had joined as well. Peter Dinklage was revealed in April 2024 as the voice of Dr. Dillamond. Unlike earlier Oz film adaptations, this one did not cast dwarf actors as the Munchkins.

In April 2022, Erivo said she wanted to watch the Broadway show again before filming and was "relearning everything." She confirmed Paul Tazewell as costume designer. She pictured Elphaba's costume as "a Jean Paul Gaultier collection with a 'new world, kind of gilded age' feeling." She also chose micro braids and a full set of nails, as a nod to her culture and to the world of Oz. In her mind, the nails were part of Elphaba's magic, growing out of her before she had discovered why, like her green skin.

Multiple cameos appear during "One Short Day." Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, the original Broadway Elphaba and Glinda, play leading members of the Emerald City Players. Michael McCorry Rose, who played Fiyero on Broadway, is the Wiz-O-Mania narrator. Winnie Holzman appears as an audience member who exclaims, "He can read it the Grimmerie! He must be a Wizard!" Stephen Schwartz plays the Emerald City Guard who announces that "the Wizard will see you now." Adam James and Alice Fearn, who played Elphaba in the West End production, appear as Galinda's parents, nicknamed "Popsicle" and "Momsie."

In Latin American Spanish, Danna Paola and Ceci de la Cueva were among the stage actresses reprising Elphaba and Glinda for dubbed versions. Myra Ruiz and Fabi Bang did the same in Brazilian Portuguese, and Park Hye-na and Jeong Sunah in Korean. Sabrina Weckerlin, an alternate Elphaba in the original 2007 German production, voiced the role in the German dub. Dutch actress Vajèn van den Bosch, who played Elphaba in Germany in 2021, returned as Glinda in the Dutch dub. Johanne Milland, who portrayed Glinda in the 2024 Danish production, voiced her in Danish.

Willemijn Verkaik, who first played Elphaba in the original 2007 German production, dubbed Menzel's cameo in Dutch and German. Chantal Janzen and Lucy Scherer, original Glinda actresses, dubbed Chenoweth in those versions. Maria Lucia Rosenberg, the original 2011 Danish Elphaba, dubbed Menzel in Danish. Elsewhere, Menzel was dubbed by performers who had voiced Elsa in Frozen, a role she originated. Examples include Elke Buyle in Flemish, Nikolett Füredi in Hungarian, Taryn Szpilman in Brazilian Portuguese and Annika Herlitz in Swedish.

Norway had never staged the musical when the film opened there. Two days before the release, a first Norwegian production was announced, and it premiered on the 6th of March 2025. Sanne Kvitnes reprised her role as Elphaba, while Alexandra Rotan took over the role of Glinda from Trine Bariås.

  • On the 26th of April 2022, Chu announced that the adaptation would be filmed in two parts. Fitting the whole story into one movie, he said, would mean "doing some real damage to it." Two films would give the characters' journeys more "depth and surprise." The second part would be titled Wicked: For Good.

Schwartz echoed Chu's reasoning in June 2022 and confirmed that a new song was in the works. He explained that getting past "Defying Gravity" without a break was hard, because the song was "written specifically to bring a curtain down." He added that he would gladly justify any change from the stage show to anyone who asked.

By 2024, Winnie Holzman, who wrote the stage script, was credited as the sole writer. In August 2024, the Writers Guild of America determined that Dana Fox had collaborated with Holzman on the screenplay. It also found that Craig Mazin contributed additional literary material. The script keeps the musical's invented vocabulary, with words such as "braverism," "hideoteous" and "confusifying," which give Oz its own "Ozian" language.

Among the film's new characters are Miss Coddle, the headmistress at Shiz University, and Dulcibear, Elphaba's childhood nanny. Galinda's parents, who drop her off at Shiz, are new as well. Miss Coddle takes over the headmistress job that Madame Morrible held on stage, and Morrible becomes Dean of Sorcery. New scenes show Elphaba's tutoring sessions with Morrible, flashbacks to her childhood ridicule over her green skin, and moments between her and her sister Nessarose. Dr. Dillamond is no longer the only Animal professor at Shiz.

To earn a PG rating from the Motion Picture Association, the filmmakers toned down the sexual content of the novel and the musical. The goal was to let both films reach a wider audience. Pfannee, a female character in the novel and the musical, is male in the film. Elphaba is no longer already enrolled at Shiz. She arrives to look after Nessarose at their father's request, and Morrible enrolls her later. Elphaba and Fiyero first meet in a forest, not among a group of classmates.

The staging of the songs changed too. "Something Bad" moves from a conversation between Dillamond and Elphaba to a private gathering of talking Animals at his off-campus home. "Dancing Through Life" unfolds in the university's circular, rotating library and includes an extended dance break. Chu described the Ozdust Ballroom as a nightclub in "the underbelly of Oz," complete with a band of Animals.

"Popular" is extended with additional key changes. "One Short Day" grows significantly, bringing in the Emerald City Players, who delve into the origins of the Grimmerie. "Defying Gravity" gains an extra vocal section and is extended to work as the cliffhanger. After Elphaba's battle cry, which normally ends the song, comes a score extension inspired by Richard Strauss's Also sprach Zarathustra, made famous by the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The soundtrack album arrived on the 22nd of November 2024 through Republic and Verve Records, and the score album followed on the 6th of December. Schwartz composed the score alongside John Powell. Jeff Atmajian updated William David Brohn's original orchestrations and enlarged the orchestra from the stage version's 23 musicians to 80. The London Symphony Orchestra recorded at AIR Studios in London. Stephen Oremus, the musical's original music director, conducted the songs, while Powell and Gavin Greenaway conducted the score. Schwartz, Oremus and Greg Wells produced the soundtrack. A sing-along edition followed on the 20th of December 2024, keeping the original 11 tracks but removing the lead vocals.

Some songs from Wicked: For Good appear in this film, most prominently "For Good" in scenes showcasing Elphaba and Glinda's friendship.

  • Principal photography was first set to begin in June 2022 at Sky Studios Elstree in the United Kingdom. By July 2022, rehearsals were planned for August and filming for November. On the 9th of December, Chu confirmed on Twitter that filming had begun. Christopher Scott choreographed the musical numbers.

Filming was scheduled to wrap in late July 2023. On the 13th of July, the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike suspended shooting. Work resumed and concluded in January 2024, after 155 days of filming in total.

Erivo and Grande insisted that the song vocals be recorded live on set. Chu cited Steven Spielberg's 1991 film Hook as inspiration for the large-scale sets and practical effects. Nine million colorful tulips were planted on location around the Munchkinland set. The production paved a yellow brick road with real mud. It also built a life-size, art deco-inspired train to carry Elphaba and Glinda to the Emerald City.

Chu named two 1998 films, Pleasantville and The Truman Show, as influences on how both Wicked films portray Oz. He described a new generation's rebelliousness, calling it "an awakening of a generation." In his words, "You start to see the truth about things that maybe you were taught differently." The interior of the Wizard's castle drew on Hans Poelzig's Großes Schauspielhaus. Chu had confirmed Nathan Crowley as production designer in June 2022.

Industrial Light & Magic and Framestore provided the visual effects, with Pablo Helman as production visual effects supervisor. The film has 2,200 visual effects shots. Team Aspect handled the main-on-end title sequence and motion design. They used 1930s stylization as an homage to the 1939 MGM film The Wizard of Oz, including a recreation of the Universal logo and "To be continued" cards in a font similar to that film's.

On the 6th of February 2024, post-production was confirmed to be underway. Chu worked remotely with editor Myron Kerstein using the newly released Apple Vision Pro. Kerstein said the Ozdust Ballroom "was basically the set piece we had to get right." Otherwise, he said, "the rest of the movie was going to fall apart." Editing that sequence meant watching every ten-minute take of Elphaba and Glinda's dance duet and choosing the portions that drew the strongest emotional response. The whole film was edited on Avid Media Composer.

  • On the 16th of April 2023, first-look pictures of Elphaba and Glinda appeared on social media. At CinemaCon on the 26th of April 2023, work-in-progress footage gave the first listens to Erivo and Grande singing "Defying Gravity" and "Popular." A 60-second teaser premiered during Super Bowl LVIII on the 11th of February 2024. The three-minute theatrical trailer followed on the 15th of May 2024, and a Lego version in the brickfilm style arrived on the 29th of May.

NBC promoted Wicked heavily during its coverage of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Erivo and Grande attended the opening ceremony and the qualifying round of women's gymnastics. A new trailer arrived on the 5th of September 2024, remixing "Defying Gravity" with the "Wicked Witch" theme from The Wizard of Oz. NBC aired a behind-the-scenes special, Defying Gravity: The Curtain Rises on Wicked, on the 19th of November 2024.

The "Journey Through Oz" press tour turned five cities into film locations. Sydney became Munchkinland, Los Angeles became Shiz University, and Mexico City became the Enchanted Forest. New York became the Ozdust Ballroom, and London became the Emerald City. Universal had 450 promotional partners and released toys, apparel, books, beauty products and accessories. It also launched an interactive website for Shiz University, with a welcome brochure and a guided campus tour.

Grande's cosmetics brand R.E.M. Beauty released a Wicked collaboration. People magazine published a 96-page special issue in November 2024. At the 2025 Rose Parade in Pasadena, a 55-foot "Defying Gravity" float carried 60,000 tulips. For the streaming release on Peacock, Universal sold its most Pay 1 movie ad spots ever, with sixteen brand partners.

On the 9th of October 2024, a poster showed Erivo and Grande in character, recreating the original stage musical artwork. Reception was mixed, and fans made edits and memes using Adobe Photoshop and generative artificial intelligence tools. One Twitter user obscured Elphaba's eyes, raised Glinda's hand over her mouth and gave Elphaba smirking red lips. Many fans considered it an improvement.

On the 16th of October, Erivo reposted the edit on Instagram and wrote that "None of this is funny." She argued that the original poster was an illustration, while she was a real person who chose to look into the camera. "To edit my face and hide my eyes is to erase me," she wrote. The user deleted the post out of respect for Erivo, then reposted it on the 20th of October as "an innocent fan edit."

On the 19th of October, Grande said she found artificial intelligence conflicting and troublesome at times, but called it a massive adjustment period. She added that she had great respect for Erivo. On the 29th of October, Erivo told Entertainment Tonight that her post was not a clapback. It was, she said, "a human moment of wanting to protect little Elphaba."

Mattel produced dolls of Glinda, Elphaba, Fiyero and Madame Morrible, plus Nessarose in a wheelchair. In August 2024, two song snippets, "Popular" and "Defying Gravity," leaked through a sound chip in Mattel's singing dolls. In November 2024, many boxes were found to carry a link to wicked.com, the website of an adult film studio, instead of the official wickedmovie.com. Mattel apologized and asked parents to destroy the packaging. In December 2024, a South Carolina mother sued Mattel over the emotional distress she and her daughter suffered.

In Kuwait, Wicked was pulled from some theatres over "public ethics," although it kept screening in various cinemas there. In the United States, the group One Million Moms called for a boycott, claiming the film "promotes witchcraft and pushes the LGBTQ agenda on families, particularly children." Chenoweth answered on Instagram that the group was "a mere few hundred." She added that she was "a Christian woman" who had originated Glinda.

  • Wicked premiered at the State Theatre in Sydney on the 3rd of November 2024. Premieres followed at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles on the 9th, the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City on the 11th, the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan on the 14th and the Royal Festival Hall in London on the 18th. Universal released it in Australia and Mexico on the 21st of November, and in the United States on the 22nd. Formats included RealD 3D, IMAX, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, ScreenX and D-Box.

On the 16th of October 2024, Universal screened the film on its studio lot for influencers, awards pundits and industry figures. Kim Kardashian hosted a private screening on the 22nd for her family, Erivo and Grande. A screening at the DGA Theater in Manhattan on the 28th drew original Broadway cast members Kristin Chenoweth, Norbert Leo Butz and Christopher Fitzgerald, plus other actresses who had played Elphaba and Glinda. Idina Menzel sent a video greeting because she was in rehearsals for the new musical Redwood. Anna Wintour hosted a screening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the 14th of November.

On the 23rd of November, Wicked closed the 32nd Camerimage festival in Poland, with Alice Brooks and Nathan Crowley attending. Crowley received the festival's 2024 Production Designer Award. Gladiator II took over most IMAX screens on opening weekend. As a result, the advance screenings on the 18th of November for Amazon Prime members and on the 20th for the general public were the only times most U.S. theaters could show Wicked in IMAX at once.

Wicked had also been set for the 25th of December 2024 and the 27th of November 2024. The November date was chosen to avoid Avatar: Fire and Ash and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. It then moved to the 22nd of November to avoid Moana 2, which put it against Gladiator II. That triggered talk of a pairing called "Glicked," similar to Barbenheimer, which arose when Barbie and Oppenheimer both opened on the 21st of July 2023.

The film arrived two weeks after the 2024 United States presidential election. Platt said the story was about "the distance people travel to connect with each other" and about "seeing the other as not the other."

Tickets went on sale on the 9th of October 2024, a day after Paramount began selling tickets for Gladiator II. Fandango reported that Wicked was its number 2 first-day ticket pre-seller of 2024, behind Deadpool & Wolverine. It was the year's best PG-rated first-day pre-seller and the number 3 of all time, behind Frozen 2 and the 2019 remake of The Lion King. Some observers had doubted that post-pandemic musicals would turn a profit, but projections rose in release week on positive word of mouth and awards buzz.

Wicked topped the box office in its opening weekend. It was the largest opening ever for a film based on a Broadway musical, passing the domestic opening of Into the Woods (2014) and the worldwide opening of Les Misérables (2012). On Thanksgiving Day, it posted the second-best total ever, behind Moana 2. In its second weekend it dropped 29% and finished behind Moana 2. By the end of that holiday weekend, it had become the highest-grossing stage musical-to-screen adaptation in North America, beating the lifetime domestic gross of Grease (1978).

In its third weekend, Wicked earned $34.9 million and reached $455 million worldwide. By the 15th of December 2024, it had grossed $525 million worldwide. That made it the highest-grossing film based on Baum's Oz works, passing the $493 million earned by Disney's Oz the Great and Powerful (2013). By Christmas Day, it had grossed $392.4 million domestically, ranking 49th among all films in the United States and Canada.

By the 29th of December 2024, Wicked passed Mamma Mia! (2008) to set a Guinness World Record as the highest-grossing musical film adaptation. In January 2025, it passed Dune: Part Two to become the fifth highest-grossing film of 2024. It also passed E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and F9 (2021), becoming Universal's third highest-grossing film in North America and its nineteenth worldwide. Deadline Hollywood calculated a net profit of $230 million, making it the fifth-most profitable film of 2024.

Wicked reached video on demand on the 31st of December 2024 and topped the charts on every major platform in its first week. Universal reported more than $70 million in premium VOD sales in the United States and Canada that week, including more than $26 million on New Year's Eve. That beat The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) as Universal's biggest first-week VOD performance. Home video followed on the 4th of February 2025, and streaming on Peacock began on the 21st of March 2025. In its first weekend there, Wicked logged 882 million minutes watched, topping Nielsen's preliminary streaming chart ahead of Plane, The Wild Robot and Anora. Its broadcast television premiere on NBC came on the 19th of November 2025, two days before Wicked: For Good reached theaters.

  • Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave Wicked an average grade of "A," and PostTrak reported a 92% overall positive score. Of those surveyed, 80% said they would "definitely recommend" it. Kyle Smith of The Wall Street Journal called it "the most entertaining film of the year" and the most dazzling live-action Hollywood musical since Chicago. Jazz Tangcay of Variety praised Chu's direction, the performances, the sets and the costumes. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian singled out Jonathan Bailey, who he said "uncorks an outrageous scene-stealer" as Fiyero.

Not every critic agreed. Manohla Dargis of The New York Times called Erivo "the strongest draw in this splashy, overly long movie." Odie Henderson of The Boston Globe found it "visually unappealing" and said it struggled with tonal shifts. Christy Lemire of RogerEbert.com found the big production numbers thrilling but the heavier themes of authoritarianism far less effective. James Berardinelli of ReelViews argued that the filmmakers had embraced "bloat."

In December 2024, Collider ranked Wicked number 16 on its list of the 25 best musicals of the 21st century. The Washington Post named it the 10th-best musical film of the century in February 2025, with Naveen Kumar writing that it "surpasses the stage musical." Time Out placed it 38th among film musicals in March 2025. Listeners of the UK radio station Classic FM voted it number 55 in the 2025 "Movie Music Hall of Fame" poll.

Kristin Chenoweth said "Jon Chu nailed it," and Idina Menzel said the film built on the original show in ways she never thought possible. Lorna Luft, a daughter of Judy Garland, called it "breathtaking to look at." Carol Kane, who played Madame Morrible on Broadway, said she was still bowled over by the film. Mark Hamill called it an "instant classic." Elle UK's Panashe Nyadundu described it as a "much-needed escape" for audiences after the presidential election.

In November 2024, a clip of journalist Tracy E. Gilchrist telling Erivo and Grande that viewers were "holding space" for the lyrics of "Defying Gravity" went viral and produced memes. Fans and the casts of Broadway and West End productions recreated the "What Is This Feeling?" choreography on TikTok and Instagram Reels. On the 23rd of December 2024, Avid released a 14-minute video of Myron Kerstein analyzing his edit of "Defying Gravity." He repeated the demonstration in person at the 2025 NAB Show on the 5th of April 2025, alongside Alice Brooks.

In February 2025, The New York Times reported that Universal Destinations & Experiences was in early development on Wicked attractions for a theme park. In January 2026, Universal City Studios LLC applied for a trademark on the phrase "Oztacular Spectacular."

At the National Board of Review, Wicked became the first fantasy film to win Best Film and the fourth musical to do so, the first since Moulin Rouge! in 2001. Chu won Best Director, and Erivo and Grande shared the Spotlight Award. The American Film Institute named it one of the top ten films of 2024. At the 82nd Golden Globe Awards it won Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. At the 30th Critics' Choice Awards it tied Conclave with 11 nominations and won three, including Best Director for Chu.

At the 97th Academy Awards, Wicked tied The Brutalist for the second-most nominations, with 10, including Best Picture. It won Best Costume Design for Paul Tazewell, who became the first African American male costume designer to win that category. It also won Best Production Design for Nathan Crowley and Lee Sandales. Kerstein won an American Cinema Editors Eddie Award. At the 2025 Kids' Choice Awards, the film led with eight nominations and won three. At the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, Erivo and Grande won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for "Defying Gravity."

The sequel, Wicked: For Good, was released on the 21st of November 2025 and adapts the musical's second act. In November 2024, Schwartz and Holzman said they had discussed the possibility of "something" more connected to the Wicked film adaptation. They stressed it would not necessarily be a Wicked Part Three or Four.
