Classic FM (UK)
The first note of Classic FM was not a symphony but the sound of birdsong. Test transmissions began in 1992 using this recording to gauge audience reaction before the official launch. The station officially opened at 06:00 on Monday the 7th of September 1992. Nick Bailey presented that inaugural programme while George Frideric Handel's Zadok the Priest played as the first piece. This moment marked the arrival of the first national classical music station since BBC Radio 3 launched in 1967.
GWR Group and Time Warner formed the ownership structure behind this new venture. Ralph Bernard served as CEO for GWR Group while Michael Bukht acted as programme director. They had previously tested a trial programme on AM frequencies in Wiltshire and Bristol. Brian Brolly from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group joined the effort after his own consortium failed to raise funds. UK law initially restricted foreign ownership to 25% but the Radio Authority granted an exemption allowing Time Warner to hold more.
Time Warner International Broadcasting President Tom McGrath approved the project despite initial rejection by Warner Bros. The station now belongs to Global Media & Entertainment which acquired it following regulatory changes. Current studios occupy the second floor of 30 Leicester Square in central London since March 2006. Mark Griffiths broadcast the first live programme from these premises on the 26th of March 2006.
Classic FM broadcasts nationally across multiple platforms including FM, DAB+, Freeview, satellite and cable television. It remains the only Independent National Radio station to maintain an FM presence alongside BBC Radios 1 through 4. International listeners access the signal via internet streaming audio services available worldwide.
Technical specifications evolved significantly over three decades. In April and May 2017 High Score became the first series dedicated to video game music on UK radio. This programme later became the most popular entry on Listen Again during the station's 25-year history. On the 2nd of January 2024 the station switched transmission quality from 128 kbps stereo DAB to 64 kbps stereo DAB+.
The technology behind playlist selection required substantial adaptation for classical music. Robin Ray compiled a database exceeding 50,000 pieces rated for popular appeal. Selector software developed by RCS Inc in the United States originally served pop music before Howard and Ray adapted it for classical genres. The system categorizes tracks using pre-determined computer fields to manage rotation rules.
Listeners vote annually for the Hall of Fame broadcast over four days during Easter weekend. First aired in 1996 this show counts down the 300 most-popular pieces chosen directly by the audience. Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 held the number one spot until 2001 when Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 took over.
Mozart's Clarinet Concerto claimed top position in 2006 while Ralph Vaughan Williams's The Lark Ascending dominated from 2007 through 2010. Rachmaninov returned to first place in 2011 ending Vaughan Williams' four-year run. The piece remained at number one again in 2012 and 2013 before The Lark Ascending reclaimed the title in 2014.
The Nation's Favourite Christmas Carol began in 2001 with In the Bleak Midwinter winning the initial vote. Silent Night won the following year but O Holy Night has secured victory almost every year since then. Only Silent Night broke the streak in 2014 and 2015. The weekly classical chart show ran from September 1992 until its final broadcast on the 21st of December 2019.
Current regular presenters include Alexander Armstrong, Katie Breathwick, Joanna Gosling and Charlotte Hawkins among others. John Humphrys and Aled Jones appear frequently alongside Myleene Klass and Stephen Mangan. Jonathan Ross and Zeb Soanes maintain occasional presenter roles while Ritula Shah and Margherita Taylor contribute regularly.
Composer in residence Joby Talbot joined Classic FM in 2004 composing monthly pieces scored for up to five instruments. His twelve compositions formed Once Around the Sun released as a CD on the 23rd of May 2005. Patrick Hawes succeeded Talbot in 2006 creating the piano album Towards the Light during his residency.
Howard Goodall became composer in residence in May 2008 presenting Howard Goodall on... starting the 7th of June 2008. Debbie Wiseman took the role in 2015 releasing The Musical Zodiac the following year. Brian Cox and Karthi Gnanasegaram serve as occasional presenters bringing diverse perspectives to the airwaves.
The podcast Case Notes won the British Podcast Awards Best True Crime Podcast in 2019. Stories from classical music history form the core content of this series. In 1999 Classic FM became the first radio station to operate an ISP providing free dial-up internet access via Classic Freenet until the late 2000s.
On the 10th of September 2024 Global announced two new spin-off stations launching the next day. Classic FM Calm focuses on chill-out classical music while Classic FM Movies plays songs from movie soundtracks. Both stations feature no human presenters running automated 24/7 output streams.
