  • In November 2025, Kim Kardashian announced that she had failed her first attempt at the California Bar Exam. The news travelled quickly, because she is the eighth-most-followed individual on Instagram and the thirteenth-most-followed on Twitter. Kardashian is a media personality, socialite and businesswoman, and critics have long called her famous for being famous. Admirers argue instead that she reshaped how celebrity works. This documentary follows the questions underneath that argument. How did a stylist's friend from Los Angeles become a household name? What did she build with all that attention? And what does she try to do with it when the goal is something other than selling?

  • Kimberly Noel Kardashian was born on the 21st of October 1980 in Los Angeles, to Robert and Kris Kardashian, whose maiden name was Houghton. She grew up with an older sister, Kourtney, a younger sister, Khloé, and a younger brother, Rob. Her mother has Scottish and Dutch ancestry, and her father is of Armenian descent.

In 1991 her parents divorced, and her mother married Caitlyn Jenner, the winner of the 1976 Summer Olympics decathlon, who was then known as Bruce. The marriage brought stepbrothers Burt, Brandon and Brody, a stepsister named Casey, and later two half-sisters, Kendall and Kylie Jenner.

In 1994, her father represented the football player O. J. Simpson during his murder trial. Simpson was Kardashian's godfather. Her father died of cancer in 2003.

As a teenager she was close to Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton, and through them she first drew media attention. She attended Marymount High School, a Roman Catholic all-girls school in Los Angeles. After she totaled her car at age 16, her father agreed to buy a replacement on one condition. She would pay for any future damage herself. She took a job at Body, a clothing store in the affluent Los Angeles neighborhood of Encino, and stayed for four years. There she helped open the Calabasas location. She resigned in 2000, after entering her first marriage.

By 2003, Kardashian was working as a personal stylist for the singer and actress Brandy, the sister of Ray J. Brandy's mother and manager, Sonja Norwood, later alleged that Kardashian had been authorized to make "one and only one" purchase on her American Express card in 2004. Norwood claimed that Kardashian and her sisters Khloé and Kourtney then ran up more than $120,000 in unauthorized charges. When no payments arrived, Norwood filed a lawsuit in 2008. Kardashian has denied all of the allegations, and the parties reportedly reached a confidential settlement in 2009.

In 2006, Kardashian began styling Paris Hilton, a childhood friend. She appeared in several episodes of the reality series The Simple Life and was constantly photographed at Hilton's side at events and parties. Rick Mendozza, a freelance photographer on assignment for the tabloid TMZ, recalled that after she accompanied Hilton to the Hollywood nightclub Hyde, tabloids kept asking him for pictures of Kardashian for the next three years. Sheeraz Hasan, a PR strategist who worked with Hilton, said in a 2020 television special that Kardashian was "ready to do whatever it takes" to build a successful brand. In 2021, Kardashian said that Hilton "literally gave me a career. And I totally acknowledge that." Hasan had first met Kardashian and her mother, Kris Jenner, in 2005, two years before the spotlight arrived.

  • In February 2007, a sex tape that Kardashian and the singer Ray J had made in 2003 was leaked on the internet and drew national attention. Kardashian sued Vivid Entertainment, which distributed the video as Kim Kardashian, Superstar. Three months later she dropped the suit and reportedly settled for 5 million, giving Vivid permission to market and sell copies. Sales reportedly brought in nearly US$1.5 million in the first six weeks. Several media outlets later accused her and her family of using the release as a publicity stunt for their forthcoming reality show.

That show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, began airing on E! in October 2007. Kardashian appeared alongside her mother, Kris Jenner, Caitlyn Jenner, her siblings Kourtney, Khloé and Rob, and her half-sisters Kendall and Kylie. The series proved so successful that it spawned spin-offs, including Kourtney and Kim Take New York and Kourtney and Kim Take Miami. The flagship series concluded in June 2021, after 294 episodes.

In December 2020, the family announced a multi-year exclusive global deal with Hulu, which is owned by Disney. The resulting series, The Kardashians, premiered in April 2022 and was co-produced with the British company Fulwell 73. It was described as a premium version of the original show. It earned the most-watched series premiere in Hulu's history across its first three days in the US, and it is the most-watched unscripted series on the service.

Kardashian was also learning to work behind the camera. In 2010 she served as producer for The Spin Crowd, a reality show about a New York City public relations firm run by Jonathan Cheban and Simon Huck.

  • In the winter of 2014, Paper magazine published an issue with Kardashian on the cover, photographed by Jean-Paul Goude. The cover showed her nude buttocks beneath the caption "Break the Internet." The magazine's website received 15.9 million views in a single day, compared with about 25,000 on an average day. A writer for Time dismissed the photograph as provocation and bluster, nothing more than an empty promise. Even so, the stunt set a new benchmark for social media response.

In June 2014, Kardashian released Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, a mobile game for iPhone and Android in which players try to become a Hollywood star or starlet. The game was free to download but charged for in-game items. It earned 1.6 million in its first five days. The next month, the developer Glu Mobile announced that it was the fifth-highest-earning game in Apple's App Store. By 2016, the game accounted for 40 percent of her yearly earnings.

In May 2015, she published Selfish, a 325-page collection of photographs that she had taken of herself. Kat Brown of The Telegraph called the book "unexpectedly revealing" and "oddly moving." That same year Kardashian released Kimoji, an emoji pack for iOS devices. It became one of the five most-bought apps in its first week.

The products had been multiplying for years. In October 2009 she launched her first fragrance, which carried her name, and by 2012 she had released five. That year E! renewed Keeping Up with the Kardashians for two more seasons in a deal reported to be worth $50 million. The Sears line known as the Kardashian Kollection brought in $600 million in wholesale earnings in 2013.

By November 2016, CBC Marketplace reported that Kardashian was paid at least US$300,000 for each post promoting products such as waist trainers, teeth whiteners and Coca-Cola. Business Insider later estimated her fee at around US$720,000 per Instagram post. In 2024, she was the twelfth-highest-paid celebrity on Instagram, with more than $4.37 million from sponsored posts.

  • In June 2019, Kardashian announced a new line of shapewear called Kimono, and the backlash arrived almost at once. Critics argued that the name disrespected Japanese culture and ignored the meaning of the traditional garment. The hashtag #KimOhNo trended on Twitter, and the mayor of Kyoto wrote to ask her to reconsider the trademark. Japan's trade minister, Hiroshige Seko, said he would still send patent officials to meet the US Patent and Trademark Office.

In August 2019, Kardashian rebranded the company as Skims. She co-founded it with the British businesswoman Emma Grede and the Swedish entrepreneur Jens Grede. It launched the following month through its own webstore and soon appeared on multiple retail websites. Skims won praise for its inclusive sizing and range of skin-tone shades, and its celebrity branding drew heavy media attention.

The growth that followed was rapid. In February 2020, Skims struck its first retail partnership, with the luxury chain Nordstrom. Pop-up stores began appearing in the US, Europe and Asia in 2021, and from 2024 the company opened permanent stores, including 22 in the US. It supplied Team USA athleisure to women athletes at the 2020 Summer Olympics, and the partnership continued through later Games. It also collaborated with Fendi, Dolce & Gabbana, Roberto Cavalli, Swarovski and The North Face. In 2023, it became the official underwear partner of the NBA, WNBA and USA Basketball, and in 2025 it joined Nike to introduce NikeSkims. As of 2024, the company had generated around $1 billion in net sales.

Kardashian received the Brand Innovator award at the 2021 WSJ. Innovator Awards and the Innovation Award at the 2023 CFDA Awards. Time put Skims on its list of the 100 most influential companies of 2022.

Skims was not her first beauty and fashion venture. In 2017 she launched KKW Beauty and KKW Fragrance, which operated until 2022. KKW Beauty generated $100 million in sales in 2019, and it was valued at over US$1 billion in 2021. In 2022 she founded the skincare line SKKN by Kim.

Forbes reported in 2015 that her earnings had nearly doubled to $53 million, up from $28 million the year before. Her highest reported annual earnings were $72 million in 2019. She became a billionaire in April 2021, and Forbes now estimates her net worth at $1.7 billion.

In April 2022, Kardashian founded the private equity firm Skky Partners with a former partner of the Carlyle Group. In December 2024, she stepped down as managing partner and became a senior operating advisor, and her mother left the firm.

  • Disaster Movie, a 2008 spoof, gave Kardashian her feature film debut, opposite Carmen Electra, as a character named Lisa. In 2013, she played the co-worker of an ambitious therapist in Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor, a drama written and directed by Tyler Perry. The film earned a worldwide gross of US$53.1 million, but critics were harsh. Kardashian won the Razzie Award for Worst Supporting Actress.

In 2008, she competed on season seven of Dancing with the Stars, partnered with Mark Ballas, and was the third contestant eliminated. On the 31st of December 2010, she premiered a single called "Jam (Turn It Up)" at a New Year's Eve party at TAO Las Vegas. Hype Williams directed the video, and Kanye West made a cameo. Jim Farber of the Daily News called it a "dead-brained piece of generic dance music, without a single distinguishing feature." In December 2024, she released a cover of "Santa Baby," produced by her brother-in-law Travis Barker, with a cameo from Macaulay Culkin in the video.

In 2021, Kardashian voiced Delores, a poodle, in PAW Patrol: The Movie, released on the 20th of August. She reprised the role in the sequel in 2023. In October 2021, she hosted Saturday Night Live and used her monologue to joke about her estranged husband Kanye West, Caitlyn Jenner, her sisters and O. J. Simpson.

American Horror Story: Delicate marked her first scripted television role. She played Siobhan Corbyn, the best friend and publicist of the protagonist, and co-led the season alongside Emma Roberts. It aired in two parts, in September 2023 and April 2024, and production was briefly halted by the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Reviews of her performance were positive, and Coleman Spilde of The Daily Beast called her "the best part" of the season.

All's Fair, a legal drama created by Ryan Murphy, premiered on the 4th of November 2025. Kardashian co-executive produced it and starred as Allura Grant, a divorce attorney who owns an all-female law firm. The cast included Naomi Watts, Niecy Nash-Betts, Teyana Taylor, Sarah Paulson and Glenn Close. Reviews were overwhelmingly negative. Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter called the series "brain dead," and Ed Power of The Telegraph called it "a crime against television." Even so, it had the most-watched scripted Hulu series premiere in three years, and it was renewed for a second season.

The public verdict on Kardashian herself has been just as split. Barbara Walters included her among the "10 Most Fascinating People" in 2010, and Time named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2015. A British survey in 2012 listed her among the "most annoying celebrities," and commentators have accused her of promoting materialism and unrealistic beauty standards. In 2023, Fortune named her among its Most Powerful Women.

Her next announced project is The Fifth Wheel, a Netflix comedy directed by Eva Longoria and written by Paula Pell and Janine Brito, in which Kardashian will star in the title role.

  • In 2000, at 19, Kardashian eloped with the music producer Damon Thomas. He filed for divorce in 2003. She later blamed the split on physical and emotional abuse by Thomas, and said she had been high on ecstasy during the wedding.

In May 2011, she became engaged to the NBA player Kris Humphries, and they married on the 20th of August 2011 in Montecito, California. E! aired a two-part special about the preparations and the wedding in early October. After 72 days of marriage, she filed for divorce on the 31st of October. Several news outlets surmised that the marriage was a publicity stunt. A man claiming to be her former publicist, Jonathan Jaxson, said the marriage had been staged to make money. Kardashian sued him, and the case was settled with an apology from Jaxson.

Kardashian began dating the rapper Kanye West in April 2012, while she was still legally married to Humphries. Her divorce was finalized on the 3rd of June 2013. She and West became engaged on the 21st of October 2013, her 33rd birthday, and married on the 24th of May 2014 at Forte di Belvedere in Florence, Italy. Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy designed her wedding dress. The New York Times called the marriage "a historic blizzard of celebrity."

On the 19th of February 2021, Kardashian officially filed for divorce from West. In April 2021, they agreed to end the marriage and to share custody of their four children. In February 2022, she asked the Los Angeles Superior Court to speed up proceedings, saying that West did not accept that the marriage was over. She was declared legally single on the 2nd of March 2022 and dropped West as her legal last name. A settlement was reached on the 29th of November 2022.

The couple's four children are two daughters, born in 2013 and 2018, and two sons, born in 2015 and 2019. Kardashian has spoken openly about complications during her first two pregnancies. She developed pre-eclampsia in the first, which forced her to deliver at 34 weeks. After both pregnancies she developed placenta accreta and underwent surgery to remove the placenta and scar tissue. Doctors then advised her not to become pregnant again, and her third and fourth children were born through a surrogate. She has also discussed her psoriasis. In October 2025, she revealed a brain aneurysm diagnosis and suggested that the stress of splitting from West contributed to it.

Kardashian describes herself as "really religious." In April 2015, she and West traveled to the Armenian Quarter of the Old City in Jerusalem, where their daughter was baptized in the Armenian Apostolic Church at the Cathedral of St. James. Khloé Kardashian was appointed godmother. In October 2019, Kardashian herself was baptized in an Armenian Apostolic ceremony at the Etchmiadzin Cathedral complex in Armenia and was given the Armenian name Heghine. That month she also baptized her three younger children there.

On the 2nd of October 2016, during Paris Fashion Week, five people dressed as police officers robbed Kardashian at gunpoint in the apartment where she was staying. They got in by threatening the concierge. They bound and gagged her, taped over her eyes and mouth, and placed her in the bathtub while they stole $10 million worth of jewelry. She was physically unharmed, and she managed to free her hands and scream for help. Filming of Keeping Up with the Kardashians was put on hold indefinitely, and it resumed on the 26th of October.

Some websites alleged that the robbery was staged. Media Take Out published such stories and later removed them. After a video showing Kardashian just after the robbery was released on the 10th of October, she filed lawsuits against several media outlets and secured a gag order. She dropped the lawsuit on the 25th of October.

French police detained 17 persons of interest on the 9th of January 2017, and 16 people were arrested later that year. The press nicknamed the suspects the "Grandpa Robbers," because those who allegedly entered her room were of or near senior age. In April 2025 the case finally came to trial, and Kardashian gave evidence in person. Eight defendants were convicted, and two were acquitted.

  • In April 2016, Kardashian wrote an article on her website condemning The Wall Street Journal for running an advertisement from FactCheckArmenia.com that denied the Armenian genocide. She has advocated for recognition of the genocide on many occasions, even though she is not a citizen of Armenia and does not speak Armenian. In April 2015 she visited the Tsitsernakaberd memorial in Yerevan, and in April 2021 she wrote to President Joe Biden to thank him for officially recognizing the genocide. On the 10th of October 2020, she announced a $1 million donation to the Armenia Fund. In November 2021, she and Leeds United helped female Afghan soccer players reach England after they had been stranded in Pakistan.

In January 2017, a table of statistics that she tweeted went viral, showing that gun violence kills 11,737 people a year in the United States while terrorism kills 14. The Royal Statistical Society mentioned the tweet when it announced its International Statistic of the Year for 2017.

In April 2019, Vogue reported that Kardashian was studying for the bar exam, and that she was reading law instead of attending law school. In 2021 she said she had failed the first-year law exam, known as the baby bar, for a second time. In December 2021, she passed it on her fourth attempt. She completed her law reader program in 2025.

Her endorsements have also brought legal trouble. In January 2022, Kardashian was named as a defendant in a class-action lawsuit against the cryptocurrency company EthereumMax, alleging a pump and dump scheme. In October 2022, the US Securities and Exchange Commission announced that she had agreed to pay a $1.26 million fine and not to promote cryptocurrency assets for three years. The agency cited her failure to report a $250,000 payment to promote the EthereumMax token. She neither admitted nor denied wrongdoing. In December 2022, Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald dismissed the class action, finding the fraud claims insufficiently supported.

The cause that has absorbed most of her energy is criminal justice reform. In June 2018, President Donald Trump granted clemency to Alice Marie Johnson, who had received a life sentence for a first-time drug offense as the leader of a cocaine ring in Tennessee. Kardashian had campaigned for it. Together with Van Jones and Jared Kushner, she helped persuade Trump to support the First Step Act, which enacted major prison reforms. Jones later said the act would never have passed without her. The US Senate then passed it by a great majority.

In 2019, Kardashian largely funded the 90 Days to Freedom campaign, led by the attorneys Brittany K. Barnett and MiAngel Cody. The effort led to the release of 17 people from life sentences for nonviolent drug offenses under the First Step Act. Barnett wrote that "Kim linked arms with us to support us when foundations turned us down." Commentators ranged from praising her to calling it a public relations stunt. Others accused her of taking credit for work she did not do. Her documentary Kim Kardashian West: The Justice Project premiered on Oxygen on the 5th of April 2020.

In April 2022, she urged clemency for Melissa Lucio, the only woman of Hispanic descent on Texas's death row, and deleted her tweets the same day. When Lucio received a stay of execution on the 25th of April, Kardashian celebrated on social media. In October 2022, she began hosting the podcast The System: The Case of Kevin Keith, which examines a man convicted of triple homicide in Ohio in 1994. In December 2023, she asked on Instagram, "Who is Toforest Johnson? And why does the state of Alabama have an innocent man on death row?" Johnson has been on Alabama's death row for more than 25 years.

In September 2024, Kardashian visited Lyle and Erik Menendez, along with more than 30 other inmates, at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility. The meeting focused on prison reform. The next month she wrote an essay for NBC News arguing that the brothers were "not monsters." In May 2025, a judge resentenced them to 50 years to life, making them eligible for parole. Both were denied parole in August 2025, and both are scheduled to be eligible for a second hearing in 2028.
