  • Amanda Seyfried has headlined films that together took in more than $2.4 billion at the worldwide box office. In 2022, Time named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world. She holds a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award, and she has been nominated for an Academy Award. She began acting at the age of 15. Her route to those honors was not a straight line. Again and again she auditioned for one part and ended up in another, or signed on to a film and had to walk away. So how did a teenage model from Pennsylvania turn near misses into a career that spans soap operas, musicals, horror, and prestige drama? What did the lost roles teach her? And what does it take to be both a leading actress and one of the most recognizable faces in luxury advertising?

  • Allentown, Pennsylvania, is where Amanda Michelle Seyfried was born on the 3rd of December 1985. Her mother, Ann Seyfried, whose maiden name was Sander, worked as an occupational therapist. Her father, Jack Seyfried, was a pharmacist. The family is of German ancestry, and Amanda has an older sister, Jennifer, who played music in a rock band.

By the age of eight, Seyfried was already modeling. She signed first with Image International in Allentown and later with Pro Model in Bethlehem.

William Allen High School, a large public school in Allentown, is where she took art and piano lessons and joined school theater productions. She also showed an early interest in singing. Her modeling work included print ads for clothing companies, among them Limited Too, where she appeared with Leighton Meester. She also appeared on three covers of the Sweet Valley High novel series. At 17 she gave up modeling and took a job as a waitress in a retirement community. Alongside school she studied opera, took vocal lessons, and trained with a Broadway coach.

Her first screen work was as an extra on Guiding Light, a daytime drama. From 2000 to 2001 she played the recurring character Lucy Montgomery on the CBS soap As the World Turns. From 2002 to 2003 she played Joni Stafford on the ABC soap All My Children. In 2003 she enrolled at Fordham University in New York City, then chose not to attend when a leading role in a feature film came her way. That film came out of an audition she had given for a different part entirely.

  • Regina George was the part Seyfried auditioned for in 2003, when she tried out for Mean Girls. It went to Rachel McAdams. She was also considered for the lead, Cady Heron, who was ultimately played by Lindsay Lohan. The producers instead decided she should play Karen Smith, the dim-witted, "plastic" sidekick of Regina.

Mean Girls grossed over $130 million in theaters. Seyfried shared an MTV Movie Award for "Best On-Screen Team" with Lohan, Lacey Chabert, and McAdams.

On UPN, she next auditioned for the title role in Veronica Mars. Kristen Bell got that part. Seyfried instead played Veronica's murdered best friend, Lilly Kane, who appeared only in flashbacks. Across 2004 to 2006 she made 11 appearances in the show.

In 2005 came Nine Lives, a film made of nine short pieces with different themes and an ensemble cast. Director Rodrigo García wrote her segment, the role of Samantha, specifically for her. She and the film's other female leads shared the Best Actress prize at the Locarno International Film Festival. That year she also played Mouse in the independent film American Gun.

The following year she appeared in five episodes of Wildfire as Rebecca. She took the lead role of Chrissy in the short film Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves, written and directed by Andrea Janakas. She played Julie Beckley in Alpha Dog. Between 2004 and 2006 she also guest-starred on House, Justice, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, American Dad!, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. A premiere on HBO in 2006 was about to change how audiences saw her.

  • On the 12th of March 2006, HBO premiered Big Love in the United States. The series followed a fictional fundamentalist Mormon family. Seyfried played Sarah Henrickson, the first daughter of Bill and Barb, who struggles with the family's polygamous faith. She appeared in 44 episodes between 2006 and 2011, and the role lifted her profile considerably.

In 2008 she took a supporting part as Zoe in the horror drama Solstice. That same year she appeared opposite Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia!, the film version of the 1999 stage musical. It was her first leading role. Mamma Mia! became the fifth highest-grossing film of 2008. As of February 2021 it ranked 159th among the highest-grossing films ever. Five of her songs from it were released on the soundtrack, and "Honey, Honey" earned a BPI Silver certification.

On the 22nd of February 2009, Seyfried presented an award and performed at the 81st Academy Awards. Early the following month, director Zack Snyder chose her to lead Sucker Punch as Baby Doll. She had to drop out because the shooting dates clashed with Big Love. In December 2009, HBO confirmed that she would return for the show's fourth season but that it would be her last. She wanted to concentrate on film.

In July 2018 she reprised the role of Sophie Sheridan in the sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Its soundtrack brought her more BPI Silver certifications, for the songs "One of Us" and "Angel Eyes".

  • Anita "Needy" Lesnicki, the best friend of the title character, was Seyfried's role in the comedy horror film Jennifer's Body. She was cast in March 2008. The film premiered at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival and reached theaters on the 18th of September 2009. Reviews were mixed.

Dear John, the screen version of a Nicholas Sparks novel, paired her with Channing Tatum and opened on the 5th of February 2010. Critics were generally harsh. Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter wrote, "Seyfried gives the character and her relationship all she's got, but she can't do all the heavy lifting." Audiences disagreed. Dear John became the first film to end Avatar's run at number one at the United States box office, earning $80 million domestically and $115 million worldwide. Seyfried also wrote and recorded the song "Little House" for one of its soundtracks.

Chloe followed on the 26th of March 2010 from Sony Pictures Classics, after a Toronto premiere in September 2009. She played an escort hired to test a husband's faithfulness. It became director Atom Egoyan's highest-grossing film, and her reviews were favorable. Later in 2010, Letters to Juliet, based on a book by Lise and Ceil Friedman, drew mixed reviews but grossed $80 million worldwide. It won her the Showest Breakthrough Female Star of the Year award. Forbes also placed her on its "17 Stars To Watch" list that year.

Red Riding Hood, directed by Catherine Hardwicke, opened on the 11th of March 2011 to mostly negative reviews. Even so, it earned $90 million worldwide against a $42 million budget. In Time, directed by Andrew Niccol, cast her as Sylvia Weis and reunited her with her Alpha Dog co-star Justin Timberlake. It took in more than $172 million worldwide.

Not every announced project reached the screen. In January 2009 she was set to appear in an adaptation of Oscar Wilde's comedy A Woman of No Importance, which ran into financing trouble. She withdrew from Albert Nobbs over scheduling, and Mia Wasikowska took the part. She was signed to play Ann Burden in Z for Zachariah, based on Robert O'Brien's post-apocalyptic novel. A production delay led to her replacement by Margot Robbie.

  • Cosette, in the 2012 film of the musical Les Misérables, was the part that moved Seyfried toward heavier drama. The film earned acclaim and a Best Picture nomination, and it grossed $440 million worldwide. As part of the ensemble cast she was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award. Her songs on the highlights album include "In My Life", "A Heart Full of Love", and "One Day More".

Linda Lovelace was her next major challenge, in the 2013 biopic Lovelace, and critics praised her work. She also served as an executive producer on it. In 2017 she played a pregnant parishioner, Mary Mensana, in First Reformed.

David Fincher's biopic Mank, released in 2020, gave her the part of actress Marion Davies. It was the third film she released that year. It earned her nominations for the Academy Award, the Critics' Choice Movie Award, and the Golden Globe Award, all for Best Supporting Actress.

In 2022 she played Elizabeth Holmes, the disgraced inventor and Theranos founder, in the Hulu limited series The Dropout. That performance won her the Primetime Emmy, the Critics' Choice Award, and the Golden Globe, plus a nomination for a Screen Actors Guild Award. As a producer, she picked up further nominations from the Emmys, the Critics' Choice, and the Golden Globes, winning the Critics' Choice.

She went on to lead The Crowded Room on Apple TV in 2023, playing Rya Goodwin. In early 2025 she took the role of Mickey Fitzpatrick in Long Bright River, also as an executive producer. It brought her a second Golden Globe nomination.

December 2025 brought two films. In The Housemaid she played Nina Winchester and won acclaim. In The Testament of Ann Lee she portrayed Ann Lee, founder of the religious sect known as the Shakers. That performance drew Golden Globe and Critics' Choice nominations for Best Actress. Two songs from the soundtrack, "Clothed by the Sun" and "Hunger & Thirst", are listed under her name in 2026.

  • A 2011 People magazine article, "25 Beauties (and Hotties) at 25", ranked Seyfried number one. The magazine had also put her on its annual beauty list in 2009 and 2010, and it included her in a 2012 article titled "Beautiful at Every Age". Vanity Fair featured her in its "Bright Young Hollywood" piece in 2008. In 2010 she appeared on the magazine's cover with several other actresses.

The brand work began in 2010, when French-Japanese skincare house Clé de Peau Beauté chose her as its muse, ambassador, and official spokesperson. In May 2013 she became the global face of the Givenchy fragrance Very Irresistible.

Miu Miu named her the global face of its Fall Winter 2016 collection campaign in June 2016. She appeared alongside Taylor Hill, Anna Ewers, Mayowa Nicholas, and Rose Hanbury, among others.

Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre has counted her as a brand ambassador since 2019. In October 2019 she was also named a global ambassador for Lancôme.

  • Anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic attacks are conditions Seyfried has spoken about openly. She also had stage fright, and for that reason she avoided theater productions until 2015.

She sits on the board of the International Network for Aid, Relief and Assistance, known as INARA. The organization provides medical services for children wounded in war zones, with a special focus on refugee children from Syria affected by the civil war there.

In early 2016 she began a relationship with Thomas Sadoski, her co-star in The Last Word. They confirmed their engagement on the 12th of September 2016 and married in March 2017. A daughter was born in 2017 and a son in 2020.

In 2025 she voiced support for socialism, saying, "How about our agenda is take care of each other? Socialism is a gorgeous idea, and I know it doesn't work perfectly, or that people understand what the word actually means." Her filmography still points ahead. It lists a voice role in Cinderella, in post-production in 2026.
