  • On the 14th of January 2019, NBCUniversal announced plans to launch an over-the-top streaming service in 2020. Bonnie Hammer led the division known as NBCUniversal Direct-to-Consumer and Digital Enterprises during this planning phase. The company revealed that the new platform would feature both original content and library material from its extensive catalog. A public naming contest concluded on the 17th of September 2019 when officials selected Peacock as the official title. This name served as a direct allusion to the iconic peacock logo used by NBC for decades.

The service began a soft launch for Comcast Xfinity cable subscribers on the 15th of April 2020. This initial rollout targeted customers using X1 and Xfinity Flex systems first. National availability followed shortly after on July 15 of that same year. By August 2021, the platform had reached at least 54 million signups across various tiers. The early strategy relied heavily on bundling with existing cable packages to drive adoption among households already paying for television services.

  • Peacock initially offered three distinct plans: Free, Premium, and Premium Plus. The free version provided a limited selection of content while Premium Plus delivered ad-free video on-demand alongside live streams of NBC affiliates. As of January 2023, the free tier became unavailable to new customers unless their subscription lapsed. Existing users retained access but could not create new accounts under that plan.

Pricing structures shifted significantly over time. In July 2025, ahead of the 2025, 26 NBA season, Peacock announced price increases ranging from approximately $3 to $10.99 for Premium and up to $16.99 for Premium Plus per month. A new Select tier emerged in late 2025 priced at $7.99 monthly. This lower-cost option included library content and current programming from NBC and Bravo without live sports. Partnerships also influenced pricing models. Walmart added Peacock to its Walmart+ service in September 2025, offering members a choice between it and Paramount+. Apple followed suit in October 2025 with a discounted bundle combining Apple TV and Peacock subscriptions.

  • The service draws primarily from the NBCUniversal library including subsidiaries like Universal Pictures and Universal Television. On launch, the platform contained at least 15,000 hours of content without a subscription plus an additional 5,000 hours for Premium subscribers. Current episodes of NBC series became available on Peacock the day after their premiere for Premium users while non-subscribers received them a week later.

Licensing agreements expanded the catalog significantly over time. Lionsgate licensed library content to Peacock during renewal of its carriage of Starz. Warner Bros. Television series Two and a Half Men and George Lopez arrived on the 16th of January 2020 alongside The Matrix films. Paramount Network's Yellowstone joined the roster that same month. A&E Networks contributed titles from History and A&E libraries starting in February 2020. ViacomCBS (now Paramount Skydance) non-exclusively licensed television series and films such as Everybody Hates Chris beginning the 1st of July 2020. Hallmark Media signed an SVOD agreement on the 31st of October 2022 adding a hub featuring content from Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries.

  • Peacock carries NBC Sports and Telemundo Deportes programming including live events either simulcast with NBC or exclusive to the service. Many standalone subscription services under the NBC Sports Gold banner merged into Peacock Premium shortly after launch. These included Premier League Pass, IndyCar Pass, Figure Skating Pass, Rugby Pass, Snow Pass, motocross and speed skating packages.

Notable sporting events carried by the platform include Olympic Games coverage. During the 2020 Summer Olympics, Peacock streamed selected events plus a Tokyo Now channel featuring exclusive studio programs. Beginning at the 2022 Winter Olympics all events were streamed live on Peacock Premium. The 2024 Summer Olympics introduced multi-view support and a whiparound Gold Zone show. National Football League games became central to the strategy. All Sunday Night Football and playoff games appeared in simulcast with NBC starting in the 2021 season. One exclusive game per season began airing exclusively on streaming outside local markets in 2023. In January 2024, an NFL Wild Card broadcast added three million new subscribers achieving the most-streamed event in U.S. history with an average of 23 million viewers.

  • In June 2020 Canadian broadcaster Corus Entertainment acquired exclusive English Canadian broadcast rights to Peacock Original programming. Quebecor Content secured French Canadian rights for Club Illico in October 2021. OSN obtained Middle Eastern streaming rights through its service OSN+ in December 2021. Australian distribution involved multiple partners including Stan until late 2022 when Foxtel Group signed a new deal.

Comcast and Sky announced plans to launch Peacock in Austria Germany Ireland Italy Switzerland and the United Kingdom during Q4 2021. A soft launch occurred in the UK and Ireland on the 16th of November 2021. Sky territories received further expansion in early 2022. However, Comcast and Paramount Global launched SkyShowtime as a joint venture combining programming from both companies based on Peacock infrastructure. This service replaced separate operations in smaller European territories including Nordic countries Hungary and Poland. Showmax emerged as another key partnership in Africa where NBCUniversal owned 30% of the entity while MultiChoice held 70%. The relaunch of Showmax occurred on the 14th of February 2024 incorporating African content alongside Peacock technology.

  • As of January 2026, Peacock had 44 million paid subscribers. Financial results showed significant losses in recent quarters. In January 2026, the streamer posted losses of $552 million for the fourth quarter of 2025 up from $372 million during the final quarter of 2024. Revenue challenges persisted despite subscriber growth driven by live sports events.

Quarterly metrics reflected fluctuating engagement patterns. April 2022 saw 28 million monthly active accounts and 13 million paid subscribers representing a 40% increase from the previous quarter. September 2022 reported 30 million monthly active accounts and 15 million paid subscribers marking a 70% rise in paid subscriptions since early 2022. December 2022 reached 20 million paid subscribers partly credited to coverage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Spanish. August 2024 added 2.8 million subscribers during the first week of the Summer Olympics with Comcast filings showing 33 million paid subscribers prior to that event. These figures highlighted how exclusive sporting content directly influenced financial performance and user acquisition.
