  • In 1992, a young singer named Idina Menzel recorded a demo of a song called "In Your Eyes" and was paid $75 for the job. The song went on to win the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993, sung by the Irish performer Niamh Kavanagh. That story comes from the Irish songwriter Jimmy Walsh, who told it publicly in 2017. Menzel, whose first name is pronounced ih-DEE-nuh, is an American actress, singer and songwriter. Critics would one day call her the Queen of Broadway. How does a young New Yorker paid $75 for a demo become a Tony Award winner and the voice behind one of Disney's most famous songs? And why did the wider world take so long to learn how to say her name?

  • Idina Kim Mentzel was born in Manhattan on the 30th of May 1971. She spent her first three years or so in New Jersey before her family moved to Syosset, New York, on Long Island. Her father, Stuart Mentzel, sold pajamas, and her mother, Helene Goldberg, was a therapist. She has a younger sister named Cara. The family is Jewish, and her grandparents emigrated from Russia and Eastern Europe. The family spelled its surname Mentzel, and she later changed it to Menzel to match the pronunciation the family had adopted in the United States.

When Menzel was 15, her parents divorced, and she started singing at weddings and at bar and bat mitzvahs. She kept that job through her studies at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama in 1992. Classical training had started when she was eight. In high school she chose to explore R&B and jazz. The wedding circuit added rock and Motown, and it taught her to improvise fresh arrangements. She still relies on that skill to ad-lib alternate versions of songs when she feels unwell or her voice is tired.

In 1995, Menzel auditioned for Rent, and the show became her first professional theatre job and her Broadway debut. It opened Off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop on the 26th of January 1996. Its popularity then carried it to the Nederlander Theatre on Broadway. Menzel played the performance artist Maureen Johnson. Her work earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She lost to Ann Duquesnay, who was honored for Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk. Menzel's final performance in Rent came on the 1st of July 1997. Despite the nomination, she says she then faded into "obscurity" for eight years.

Summer of '42 at the Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut gave her an original role, Dorothy. She played Sheila in the New York City Center Encores! production of Hair and appeared on Broadway as Amneris in Aida. In 2000, she earned a Drama Desk Award nomination for playing Kate in The Wild Party, Andrew Lippa's Off-Broadway musical at the Manhattan Theatre Club.

Her first solo album, Still I Can't Be Still, arrived on Hollywood Records in 1998. Menzel has said the industry did not take her seriously as a pop or rock singer because of her Broadway origins. That year she also played the Lilith Fair summer festival. The single "Minuet" reached number 48 on the Radio and Records CHR/Pop Tracks chart in October. Even so, the album sold fewer than 10,000 copies in the United States and missed the Billboard 200. The label let it go out of print and dropped her. It would be re-released once her fame began to grow.

  • On the 8th of October 2003, Wicked began previews at Broadway's Gershwin Theatre, with Menzel starring alongside Kristin Chenoweth. The musical came from Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman. It was based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. A tryout in San Francisco preceded the previews, and the official opening night followed on the 30th of October. Menzel played Elphaba, the misunderstood Wicked Witch of the West. Critics praised her, and she won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical.

The role brought Menzel a devoted following. Many young girls identified with the misunderstood Elphaba, and the character drew a gay following as well. Her voice is preserved on the Original Broadway Cast recording. Five years after she left the show, readers of Broadway.com voted her their favorite Elphaba. Eleven actresses had played the part on Broadway by then.

Her exit made headlines of its own. During her penultimate performance on the 8th of January 2005, Menzel fell through a trap door in the melting scene and cracked a lower rib. The injury kept her out of her scheduled final show on the 9th of January. Her standby, Shoshana Bean, played Elphaba that night. Menzel still appeared in a red tracksuit, sang her last song and received a five-minute standing ovation.

After Wicked, she appeared at the Public Theater in See What I Wanna See, a musical by Michael John LaChiusa that closed in December 2005. It earned her Drama Desk Award and Drama League Award nominations. Then she crossed the Atlantic. The London production of Wicked opened at the Apollo Victoria Theatre on the 27th of September 2006, with Menzel again as Elphaba. Helen Dallimore played Glinda, and Adam Garcia played Fiyero. Menzel earned $30,000 per week, which made her the highest-paid female performer in the West End. She finished her run on the 30th of December 2006. Her successor was the Elphaba standby Kerry Ellis, who would share a London stage with Menzel again in 2008.

  • Disney had not given Menzel the lead in its animated film Tangled in 2010. Yet when the studio began casting Frozen, it rediscovered her audition reel. In 2013 she voiced Elsa, a reclusive young queen struggling to control her power over ice and snow. The character was loosely based on the villain of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Snow Queen". Disney rewrote her as a misunderstood anti-heroine, inspired by her anthem "Let It Go". Songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez wrote it specifically for Menzel because of its demanding vocal range.

Frozen earned over $1.2 billion worldwide and was the highest-grossing animated film upon release. "Let It Go" spawned countless fan covers and parodies. The song peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100. That made Menzel the first Tony Award-winning actor to reach the chart's top ten. It sold over 10.9 million copies, which placed it among the best-selling singles of 2014. She later returned as Elsa in the Disney Infinity and Kingdom Hearts video games, and in Frozen Fever in 2015. She voiced the character again in Olaf's Frozen Adventure in 2017, Ralph Breaks the Internet in 2018 and Frozen 2 in 2019.

In March 2014, Menzel sang "Let It Go" at the 86th Academy Awards, where it won Best Original Song. The actor John Travolta introduced her as "Adele Dazeem". The mispronunciation was widely ridiculed and became a viral Internet meme. Menzel was thrown off at first but was not upset. She credits the mix-up with introducing her to a wider audience, calling it "one of the best things that happened for my career".

Her Broadway show If/Then joined the joke. The production printed satirical playbills crediting Menzel as Adele Dazeem. Her earlier credits became Nert for Rent, Wicked-ly for Wicked and Farfignugen for Frozen. Travolta apologized publicly soon after the ceremony. At the 87th Academy Awards the next year, Menzel presented Best Original Song alongside him. She introduced him as "Glom Gazingo", and he finally pronounced her name correctly when he joined her on stage.

Before all this, Menzel was well known on Broadway but far less recognized outside her stage credits. The success of Frozen, "Let It Go" and the Oscars incident are credited with making her an international star. In 2015 she was slated to headline Happy Time, a sitcom produced by Ellen DeGeneres. The project never came to fruition.

  • By the 28th of February 2013, Menzel was cast as Elizabeth in If/Then, a new Broadway musical by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey. Michael Greif directed it. He had also directed the original production of Rent. A tryout at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C., ran in previews from the 5th to the 24th of November 2013. The show then moved to the Richard Rodgers Theatre, with previews from the 4th of March 2014 and an official opening on the 30th of March. Menzel received a Tony Award nomination for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, performing "Always Starting Over". She lost to Jessie Mueller, who starred in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. A Billboard writer observed that audiences greeted her more like a rock star than a musical theatre performer.

If/Then closed on Broadway on the 22nd of March 2015 after 29 previews and 401 regular performances. Menzel took Elizabeth on the first seven stops of the national tour, from October 2015 to January 2016. She left on the 24th of January 2016, the last day of the Costa Mesa, California engagement. Jackie Burns, her former Broadway standby, took over three days later in Dallas, Texas.

In 2018, the Roundabout Theatre Company cast her as Jodi in Skintight, a new play by Joshua Harmon. It ran Off-Broadway at the Laura Pels Theatre, with previews from the 31st of May, an opening on the 21st of June and a closing on the 26th of August 2018. Reviews were glowing, and the play gave her her first major non-musical role in New York. She repeated the part at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles from the 3rd of September to the 6th of October 2019.

Late in 2019, she teased a "mystery project" on Twitter with Justin Tranter, Caroline Pennell and Eve Ensler. It turned out to be Wild: A Musical Becoming at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which began on the 3rd of December 2021. Menzel starred as Bea and contributed to the lyrics. COVID forced the cancellation of the performance on the 17th of December and every one after it, which made the 16th of December her last night in the show.

Redwood premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego on the 25th of February 2024. Menzel played its lead, Jesse, and created the musical with Tina Landau and composer and co-lyricist Kate Diaz. It opened on Broadway on the 13th of February 2025 at the Nederlander Theatre, where her Broadway career had begun. Reviews were mixed. It received no Tony Award nominations, and ticket sales were low. The show closed on the 18th of May 2025 after 17 previews and 127 regular performances. It was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Broadway Production, with the ceremony held in Los Angeles on the 5th of March 2026.

  • Menzel's feature film debut came in 2001, when she played a bridesmaid in the romantic comedy Kissing Jessica Stein. In 2002 she had an uncredited part as Linda in the dark comedy Just a Kiss. In 2004 she played a pregnant sister in The Tollbooth while starring in Wicked on stage. Her first major film came in 2005, when she repeated her role as Maureen Johnson in the screen version of Rent.

Director Chris Columbus approached her himself. She had assumed that Hollywood would want A-list names for any film version. Six original Broadway cast members returned, and Menzel was the only main female cast member not replaced by a younger actress. The film received mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office. Menzel's performance was singled out by reviewers at Entertainment Weekly and IGN. The cast earned a nomination for Best Acting Ensemble at the 11th Critics' Choice Awards.

In 2006, she played the mysterious Vera Rivkin in Ask the Dust, with Colin Farrell and Salma Hayek. Critics disliked the film. Kim Newman of Empire wrote that "the film comes to life when she barges in and finds it hard to keep it together after she's gone". Menzel counts Vera among her favorite roles, partly because the character does not sing.

In 2007's Enchanted, Menzel played Nancy Tremaine, the fiancée of Patrick Dempsey's character, Robert. She famously does not sing in the film. Disney offered her the part without an audition, and she was flattered to be cast purely as an actress. Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz had written songs for Nancy, but those were cut. Menzel felt that singing would not suit a New York native among fairy-tale characters. Some critics and fans were disappointed, and she returned for the sequel, Disenchanted, in 2022. This time Nancy sings, and her song "Love Power" was released as the lead single from the soundtrack.

From 2010 to 2013, Menzel appeared in 12 episodes of Glee as Shelby Corcoran, coach of the rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline. Shelby is also the biological mother of the lead character, Rachel Berry, played by Lea Michele. Fans who noticed a strong resemblance between the two actresses had lobbied for the casting.

In 2017, Menzel starred as CC Bloom in Lifetime's remake of Beaches, a part originated by Bette Midler, one of her idols. In 2019, she played Dinah Ratner, the frustrated, estranged wife of Adam Sandler's character in Uncut Gems. Directors Josh and Benny Safdie cast her after seeing her in Skintight. Critics praised the performance, and one called her "delightfully abrasive". In 2021's Cinderella, she played the stepmother, Vivian, and wrote and recorded an original song, "Dream Girl", which was shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. In 2023, she reunited with Sandler as Bree Friedman in You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, she launched Idina's Treehouse, a YouTube series for children, filmed at a treehouse built for her son, Walker Nathaniel Diggs. Then in 2024 she and Chenoweth made a cameo during the "One Short Day" sequence in the first part of the Wicked film adaptation.

  • Menzel's mezzo-soprano range spans approximately three octaves. Reviewers have reached for many comparisons. One described a sound that can be "sweet and girlish" in the middle register before soaring far above high C. Frozen songwriter Kristen Anderson-Lopez calls her voice "a warm hug" down low that grows stronger as it rises. Others have compared her belt to Ethel Merman's. The Kennedy Center website cites her as a prime example of a Broadway belter.

Some critics found her belting "screechy". On the 1st of February 2015, she sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" a cappella at Super Bowl XLIX, and reviews were mixed. Critics praised her voice but questioned her choices of tempo and volume. She addressed such criticism in a 2014 concert, saying she wants to sing loud, proud and from the heart, like her idols Merman and Aretha Franklin.

Menzel avoids moving her shoulders while she sings. She prefers "to take a smaller breath for a bigger, longer note because there's less air that will come pummeling out." She steams her voice, practices warm-ups constantly, and calls her routine "very ritualistic" and "disciplined". She admits the Frozen songs push her to vocal extremes, and she sometimes lowers the key for live shows.

Comparisons to Barbra Streisand follow her everywhere. At the 2008 Kennedy Center Honors, she sang Streisand's "Don't Rain on My Parade" in tribute. She also names Billie Holiday, Etta James, Chaka Khan and Sarah Vaughan among her vocal idols. In concert she often performs barefoot, and critics have noted her quick banter between songs.

Her view of songwriting is surprisingly modest. She co-writes most of her material, but she calls herself a collaborator. She says she has never finished a song entirely on her own and would feel like "a fraud" posing as a great songwriter. Her studio partner of choice has been the producer Glen Ballard. He produced I Stand, released on the 29th of January 2008, which debuted at number 58 on the Billboard 200. It became the first Menzel solo album to chart.

In April 2010, she launched her Barefoot at the Symphony tour, joined by major orchestras and often conducted by Marvin Hamlisch. Her debut at Carnegie Hall was set for the 29th of October 2012. Hurricane Sandy postponed it to the 13th of January 2013. Holiday Wishes arrived on the 14th of October 2014 and reached the top ten of the Billboard 200. The album Idina followed in 2016, debuting at number 29. On the 18th of August 2023, she released the dance-pop album Drama Queen, which she called a love letter to her LGBTQ+ friends. She toured it at Pride events and then on the Take Me Or Leave Me Tour across North America in the summer of 2024.

  • In 2019, Menzel received the 2682nd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, beside the 2681st, awarded to her Frozen co-star Kristen Bell. She was inducted in the live theatre category. Disney named her a Disney Legend in 2022. The University of Pennsylvania awarded her an honorary doctorate in 2023. In October 2024, President Joe Biden gave her the National Medal of Arts.

Critics and fans rank her high. Time Out placed her 19th among the greatest female Broadway actresses of all time and traced her stratospheric reputation largely to Rent and Wicked. Her fans call themselves "Fanzels". She has a prominent gay following that dates to the 1990s, since Rent was one of the first Broadway shows to depict a lesbian relationship. She has partnered with The Trevor Project, the Give A Damn Campaign and the NOH8 Campaign. She also identifies as a feminist, saying her characters are strong women who need a journey to harness their power.

Menzel met Taye Diggs in 1995 during the original production of Rent, in which he played the landlord, Benjamin Coffin III. They married on the 11th of January 2003. Their son was born on the 2nd of September 2009. In late 2013, they separated after 10 years of marriage. Menzel cited negative public reaction to the interracial aspect of their marriage, along with other unnamed reasons. They continue to co-parent. She began dating the actor Aaron Lohr, and they bought a home in Encino, Los Angeles, in August 2015. They married in a backyard ceremony on the 22nd of September 2017.

In 2010, Menzel and Diggs founded the A BroaderWay Foundation to support young people in the arts. In the summer of 2011, Camp BroaderWay hosted girls from under-served New York communities for a 10-day performing arts camp at Belvoir Terrace in Lenox, Massachusetts. The girls worked with Broadway artists to write an original musical performed at a New York theatre. On the 27th of September 2022, Disney-Hyperion published Loud Mouse, a semi-autobiographical picture book Menzel wrote with her sister, Cara Mentzel. Its heroine is a mouse named Dee who loves to sing loudly. A sequel, Proud Mouse, followed in 2023. Her next screen project, listed as forthcoming, is Netflix's romantic comedy Just Picture It.
