Frozen (franchise)

  • The Frozen franchise earned a strange kind of compliment on the 3rd of February 2015. During a Disney earnings call that day, executives said the word Frozen 24 times. That was more than Star Wars, The Avengers, Cinderella and Spider-Man combined. The next day, Disney's share price rose 8% in a single session and closed at a record $101.28. All of it grew from one animated feature film released in 2013, inspired by a fairy tale from Hans Christian Andersen. How does one movie become toy shortages, theme park lands, a Broadway run and a string of sequels? And why did Disney's own leaders speak so cautiously about making a second film at first?

  • Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Snow Queen had tempted Disney since the 1940s. Only in the 2010s did the studio move it into production. Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee directed the 2013 film, and Lee also wrote the screenplay. Peter Del Vecho produced it, Christophe Beck composed the score, and Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez wrote the songs. John Lasseter, then chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, served as executive producer.

The film took in $400.7 million in North America and an estimated $880 million elsewhere. Its worldwide total came to $1,280,802,282, against a budget of $150 million. The opening weekend alone brought in $110.6 million globally. On the 2nd of March 2014, its 101st day in release, it passed the $1 billion line. It was the eighteenth film in history to get there and the first animated film to do so since Toy Story 3. Deadline Hollywood estimated a profit above $400 million, and the film also became the highest-grossing release of 2013. In 2014 it won two Academy Awards, for best animated feature and for original song.

The soundtrack sold over 10 million copies and became the best-selling album of 2014. "Let It Go" ranked as the fifth best-selling single of the same year. Streams of the soundtrack passed 51 million. Disney even started a radio program, Frozen Radio, to carry the songs alongside other Disney music.

Norway, which supplied much of the film's visual inspiration, felt the effect directly. By June 2014, the first quarter's tourist arrivals from the United States were up 37% over the previous year. Tour operators, including Adventures by Disney, answered by adding more Norway tours. Back in the United States, the toy aisles were about to tell an even louder story.

  • On a February 2014 earnings call, Disney chief financial officer Jay Rasulo singled out one product line. Frozen items, he said, were the single most demanded goods at Disney Stores. By March, Bloomberg Businessweek reported that almost 500,000 Anna and Elsa dolls had sold. A limited run of 5,000 dolls had sold out online in only 45 minutes during January. The home video release in mid-March pushed demand higher. Toy industry expert Jim Silver explained that children could now watch the film over and over and fall for its characters.

By mid-April 2014, resale prices for premium limited-edition dolls and costumes had climbed past $1,000 on eBay. Disney and its licensees paid for air freight to rush stock to besieged retailers. Frustrated parents vented on the Disney Store's Facebook page. Others sewed their own versions or ordered custom replicas through crafts sites such as Etsy. Similar shortages hit the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France and Singapore that spring. Director Chris Buck said in April that he and Lee had bought nothing for themselves, assuming it would not be a problem. Now, he said, everything had sold out.

By the end of April, Disney Parks limited shoppers to five items, and Disney Store set a two-item cap. The most popular items went on sale only at store opening on Saturday mornings. To buy an Elsa costume, shoppers had to enter a lottery on those mornings.

On the 9th of October 2014, Disney chief executive Bob Iger called costume demand "crazy" and "crazier than we ever anticipated, because, who knew?" The National Retail Federation projected that about 2.6 million American children would dress as Frozen characters for Halloween that year. That made Frozen the fourth most popular category of children's costume. The Fresno Bee estimated that a full Elsa outfit with accessories would cost about $94. In early November, Disney reported more than three million Frozen costumes sold in North America. Elsa was the best-selling Disney costume of all time, with Anna in second place.

Walmart entered the 2014 holiday season with about 700 distinct Frozen items in stock. They included duct tape and a Monopoly Junior edition whose tagline promised that whoever collected the most cash would thaw their freezing heart. Barbie had topped girls' holiday wish lists for 11 years. In the National Retail Federation's 2014 survey, 20 percent of American parents planned to buy Frozen goods for girls, against 16.8 percent for Barbie. Sales of other toy brands, including Hello Kitty and Barbie, fell significantly. The market research firm NPD Group later estimated that Frozen merchandise brought in $531 million in gross revenue during 2014, making it the top toy brand of the year. New York Times reporter Binyamin Appelbaum compared the business to pharmaceuticals, since the buyer is rarely the one footing the bill. His reasoning: "After all, who wants to say no to their princess?"

On the 9th of June 2015, at the LIMA International Licensing Awards in Las Vegas, Frozen won Overall Best Licensed Program. Jakks Pacific's Elsa toy took the hard goods award for animated licensees, tying with Playmates Toys' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

  • In November 2013, Disney set up Anna and Elsa meet-and-greets at Disneyland and Epcot as short-term promotion for the film. In February 2014, Disney Parks extended them indefinitely because of unprecedented demand. By early March, waits of four or five hours were reported. At Epcot's Norway pavilion, waits reportedly reached six hours. In mid-April, the meet-and-greets moved to Princess Fairytale Hall at Magic Kingdom, where guests could use the new FastPass+ reservation system. Jezebel.com compared the characters to the Beatles, drawing large crowds of screaming fans. Buck saw a four-hour line at Disneyland in the summer of 2014 and called it crazy. A fellow visitor suggested he introduce himself to the crowd, and he tactfully declined. A FastPass system came to the Disneyland meet-and-greet in September 2014.

Park events followed demand. On the 5th of July 2014, Disney's Hollywood Studios launched Frozen Summer Fun, with a daily parade, a sing-along show, a dance party, fireworks and an indoor ice skating rink. It was due to end on the 1st of September, but on the 7th of August Disney Parks extended it to the 28th of September. At Disney California Adventure, a Frozen Fun event officially began on the 7th of January 2015. It included a sing-along at the Muppet*Vision 3D theater, a meet-and-greet with Olaf, and Wandering Oaken's Trading Post. Disneyland also updated its Storybook Land Canal Boats to include the village of Arendelle. Tokyo Disneyland ran a Frozen winter event from the 13th of January to the 20th of March 2015, with a parade and special scenes in its castle projection show. Hong Kong Disneyland launched its own Frozen Fun in June 2015.

Disneyland Paris had a rougher time. Its Anna and Elsa meet-and-greets ran at the Princess Pavilion from mid-November 2014 to early January 2015, with reservation tickets issued each morning. Because of long queues and poor guest behavior, they ended in early 2015. They have returned only irregularly since, unannounced, at the Disneyland Hotel. In January 2020, the park followed with a Frozen Celebration season, including a parade-show cavalcade and the stage show Frozen: A Musical Invitation.

Permanent attractions came next. Frozen Ever After opened on the 21st of June 2016 in the Norway pavilion at Epcot, replacing the Maelstrom ride. Buck and Lee had helped Disney Parks with its design. Anna & Elsa's Boutique, a Downtown Disney shop at the Disneyland Resort, opened on the 6th of October 2014 and drew a line on its first day. In 2017 it became the Dream Boutique, themed to all the Disney princesses. Tokyo DisneySea planned a Frozen area in its Fantasy Springs port, including Arendelle Castle and Elsa's ice palace. Hong Kong Disneyland's Frozen land opened on the 20th of November 2023. Unique to that land is Wandering Oaken's Sliding Sleighs, a sled-based roller coaster winding through Arendelle.

  • At 1:30 in the morning after a pre-release midnight screening, Thomas Schumacher, president of Disney Theatrical Group, texted John Lasseter. His message was "When can we start?" Lasseter called back within 60 seconds. Schumacher later said the aim was not speed. "It needs to be great," he said. That exchange launched the Broadway musical. In January 2014, Bob Iger confirmed early development and said "We're not demanding speed. We're demanding excellence."

In May 2014, reports surfaced that Feld Entertainment was planning a Disney on Ice show based on the film. The show's world premiere took place on the 4th of September 2014 at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, with a cast of 39. Feld disclosed that 250,000 tickets sold on the first day they became available. The company expected more than a million people to see the show by the end of 2014.

For the Broadway musical, Lee wrote the book, which is the stage equivalent of a script. Anderson-Lopez said that while the film has "seven-and-a-half songs," she and Lopez had written about 23 for the stage version. The finished show added 11 songs and 3 reprises, ending with a reprise of "Let It Go." A developmental lab ran for two weeks in May 2016 in New York City, and Iger himself attended at one point. A pre-Broadway tryout followed in August 2017 at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. On the 27th of September 2016, Disney named Michael Grandage as director and Christopher Oram as scenic designer. Alex Timbers and Bob Crowley, announced earlier, were no longer involved. The show opened at the St. James Theatre. In 2019, a new song, "I Can't Lose You," replaced a reprise of "For the First Time in Forever" on the North American tour. Broadway adopted the change on the 18th of February 2020.

On the 11th of March 2020, the day before Broadway shut down because of the pandemic, the production closed. It had played 26 previews and 825 performances.

The third adaptation went to sea. Frozen, A Musical Spectacular premiered on the 10th of November 2016 in the Walt Disney Theatre aboard the Disney Wonder. It replaced Toy Story: The Musical. Sheryl Kaller directed the one-hour show, and Josh Prince choreographed it. Though considered the least extravagant of the three, it still uses fake snow in its climactic scene.

  • Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, the creators of the ABC series Once Upon a Time, loved Frozen so much that they saw it three more times. Disney had not asked for a crossover. They developed a story treatment in February 2014 and pitched it successfully. Their writers' room, they said, was basically a Frozen appreciation room. The third season finale revealed that an urn holding Elsa had arrived in Storybrooke, Maine, through a time-traveling portal. Georgina Haig, Elizabeth Lail and Scott Michael Foster played Elsa, Anna and Kristoff. John Rhys-Davies voiced Pabbie. The storyline set two years after the film is not considered canon to the main franchise.

A one-hour ABC special, The Story of Frozen: Making a Disney Animated Classic, aired on the 2nd of September 2014. It featured cast and creative-team interviews and footage from the Norway that inspired the film's look. Lasseter teased the first short film there. Frozen Fever debuted in theaters alongside Disney's live-action Cinderella on the 13th of March 2015. Its plot has Elsa and Kristoff throwing a birthday party for Anna, with Elsa's icy powers threatening the day. Lopez and Anderson-Lopez wrote its new song, "Making Today a Perfect Day."

Olaf's Frozen Adventure ran 21 minutes. It premiered in theaters with Pixar's Coco on the 22nd of November 2017 and reached ABC on the 14th of December. Its songs included "Ring in the Season," "The Ballad of Flemmingrad," "That Time of Year" and "When We're Together." In December 2019, Disney+ added Arendelle Castle Yule Log, a program of about three hours showing a burning fireplace with visits from Kristoff, Olaf and Sven.

The pandemic produced a different kind of short. Starting on the 6th of April 2020, Disney posted At Home with Olaf clips on YouTube and Twitter. Josh Gad voiced Olaf, and Hyrum Osmond and a few other animators made the clips from their own homes. The series ended on the 13th of May with a musical montage, I Am with You, after 21 shorts in total. Once Upon a Snowman arrived on Disney+ on the 23rd of October 2020 and shows Olaf's origin, from the moment Elsa creates him during "Let It Go." A six-episode documentary series, Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2, began on the 26th of June 2020. Director Megan Harding wanted an honest portrait of production, and her crew filmed for 115 days.

Olaf Presents, released on the 12th of November 2021, has Olaf narrate five Disney stories: The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Lion King, Tangled and Moana. It grew from a Frozen 2 scene in which Olaf recaps the whole first film in 90 seconds. The most recent short, LEGO Disney Frozen: Operation Puffins, arrived on Disney+ on the 24th of October 2025. In it, the Duke of Weselton loses everything after the first film and sends a flock of puffins to steal pieces of Arendelle Castle for his own.

  • Random House released five Frozen titles alongside the film, and by the 29th of June 2014 all five ranked among the Nielsen Top 20 bestselling books of the year in the United States. By August, Random House had sold over 8 million Frozen books. Together those five titles had spent 148 weeks on USA Today's list of the 150 top sellers. Erica David wrote a four-book series for 2015. The first two volumes, All Hail the Queen and Memory and Magic, appeared on the 6th of January 2015 and extend the plot beyond the film. Charles Solomon's The Art of Frozen showed concept artwork behind the film's look. A graphic novel adaptation went out digitally on the 23rd of July 2014. Dark Horse Comics launched a Disney Frozen series by Joe Caramagna in August 2018.

Stories also asked what-if questions. In Jen Calonita's Conceal Don't Feel, published in October 2019, Anna and Elsa never knew each other, and Anna would freeze if she came near Elsa. Mari Mancusi's Frozen 2: Dangerous Secrets, released on the 3rd of November 2020, tells how Queen Iduna and King Agnarr met before Elsa and Anna were born. Frozen 2: Forest of Shadows, by Kamilla Benko, appeared on the 4th of October 2019 and sends the sisters searching for a cure for a sickness in Arendelle.

Video games started almost at once. Frozen: Olaf's Quest reached Nintendo DS and 3DS on the 19th of November 2013, with 60 levels that test Olaf's snowman abilities. Anna and Elsa figurines came to Disney Infinity a week later, on the 26th of November. Disney Mobile's Frozen: Free Fall was a match-three puzzle game set in Arendelle. From the 21st of August to the 3rd of September 2014, the children's online game Club Penguin held a Frozen Party. Arendelle later became a world in the 2019 crossover Kingdom Hearts III. At least 24 board games joined the lineup, including special editions of Monopoly, Don't Break the Ice, Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders, Labyrinth and Yahtzee.

In 2016, Disney announced Frozen Northern Lights, a brand extension that introduced a new protagonist named Little Rock. Suzanne Francis's Journey to the Lights, a 224-page book published on the 5th of July 2016, launched its book series. LEGO developed four shorts for Disney Channel, and they aired together as a special on the 9th of December 2016 with Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad returning. The special drew 2.01 million viewers and ranked fifth on cable for the night.

  • On the CNBC interview with David Faber in May 2014, Bob Iger said Disney would not "mandate a sequel" or "force storytelling." He worried that doing so might produce something not as good as the first film. He did hope Frozen would be "kind of forever for the company," like The Lion King. In late April, studio chairman Alan F. Horn had said the studio had "really" not talked about a sequel, because the planned Broadway musical came first. Lee, meanwhile, picked A Wrinkle in Time as her next screenplay, according to Variety in August 2014, while still advising Disney Animation on other projects.

Idina Menzel gave mixed signals. On the 28th of November 2014, she told The Daily Telegraph that a sequel and stage show were "all in the works." On the 1st of December, she told the Today show she had no idea. In March 2015, Buck and Lee told BuzzFeed the rumors were wrong. Buck joked that each time they saw one, he and Lee would ask each other, "Are we?" Lasseter explained Disney's philosophy that a sequel should arise because the filmmakers have a story worth telling, not to "print money."

The answer changed on the 12th of March 2015. At the shareholders' meeting in San Francisco, Iger, Lasseter and Josh Gad announced Frozen 2, with Buck, Lee and Del Vecho all returning. The Los Angeles Times reported "considerable internal debate" at Disney, though the first film's success apparently swayed executives. Buck spoke of the pressure: "How do we live up to the phenomenon of the first one?" In March 2016, Kristen Bell said recording was about to begin. In September, she corrected herself. The script was still being finished, though she had recorded for other Frozen projects, including Olaf's Frozen Adventure.

In April 2017, Disney set the release date for the 27th of November 2019, and in November 2018 it moved the date to the 22nd of November. In August 2018, Allison Schroeder joined as a screenwriter to assist Lee, who had become chief creative officer of Disney Animation after Lasseter. Frozen 2 took in $1,450,026,933 worldwide on the same $150 million budget as the first film. Critics were warmer to the original. Rotten Tomatoes scored it at 90%, compared with 77% for the sequel.

On the 8th of February 2023, Iger confirmed Frozen 3 was in the works. It was first scheduled for the 25th of November 2026, but at the 2024 D23 Expo, Disney Animation moved it to the 24th of November 2027. In November 2025, Trent Correy, director of Once Upon a Studio, was reported to be co-directing. In February 2026, Josh Gad started recording voice work as Olaf. Iger said Frozen 4 is also in production, back-to-back with Frozen 3, which would make Frozen the first animated franchise to produce two films this way. In February 2026, Paul Glitter, an executive at Disney Consumer Products, told License Global that a new short would arrive in October to start the countdown toward Frozen 3. It would precede what he called the company's biggest ever cross-company movie marketing campaign, set for 2027.
