Wicked: For Good

  • Nine million colorful tulips were planted on location to surround the Munchkinland set of Wicked: For Good. This 2025 American musical fantasy film, directed by Jon M. Chu, picks up the story of Elphaba and Glinda where its predecessor stopped. Beside the flowers ran a yellow brick road paved with real mud. Behind all that spectacle sat a practical puzzle. How do you bring a beloved stage musical to the screen without damaging it? The chapters ahead follow how the filmmakers answered that question, how the sets, faces and songs were made, and what they changed on the way from stage to screen. They also ask how audiences, critics and awards voters responded.

  • L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz sits at the bottom of this story, and a 1939 film later adapted it. In 1995 Gregory Maguire published a novel that re-imagined Baum's world. Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman then loosely based their 2003 stage musical on Maguire's book. Wicked: For Good adapts the second act of that musical, with a screenplay by Holzman and Dana Fox. It is the sequel to Wicked, released in 2024.

Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum all return from the first film. The story takes place in Oz before and during the events of Baum's novel. Elphaba and Glinda now live under new identities, the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

Madame Morrible has branded Elphaba Thropp the Wicked Witch of the West, and Elphaba fights for Animal rights from a forest hideout. Glinda Upland has become the Wizard's spokesperson. She is engaged to Fiyero Tigelaar, now Captain of the Gale Force. Elphaba meets Animals who are leaving Oz, including her former caretaker Dulcibear, and urges them to resist the Wizard. The Cowardly Lion talks them out of it. He blames her for freeing him from his cage as a cub, the only home he had known, and for the Wizard's flying monkey spies.

In Munchkinland, Elphaba's sister Nessarose has inherited their father's governorship. She forbids the Munchkins, including her servant Boq, to leave without her approval. Elphaba enchants Nessarose's shoes so that she can fly. Boq decides Nessarose no longer needs him and tries to go. Nessarose casts a love spell from the Grimmerie, but it backfires and shrinks his heart. Elphaba's attempt to save him turns him into a tin man.

Back in the Emerald City, Glinda begs Elphaba to join the Wizard. Elphaba agrees on one condition, that the flying monkeys be freed. One of the monkeys, Chistery, shows her Animals imprisoned in the Wizard's lair. Among them is Dr. Dillamond, who can no longer speak. Elphaba frees them all, and the escape interrupts the wedding of Fiyero and Glinda. Fiyero helps Elphaba flee and joins her. Glinda concludes they are having an affair and vengefully suggests luring Elphaba out with a rumor that Nessarose is in trouble.

Morrible knows a rumor will not fool Elphaba, so she creates a tornado. It carries a house from Kansas that fatally crushes Nessarose. Glinda gives Nessarose's shoes to the house's occupant, Dorothy Gale, and sends her to the Wizard with a promise that he can help her go home. When the Gale Force arrives, Fiyero holds the guards back by threatening to kill Glinda. The guards drag him into a field and savagely beat him. Elphaba escapes to the abandoned castle Kiamo Ko with the monkeys and casts a spell to save his life. Believing she has failed again, she decides to embrace her perceived wickedness.

The Wizard tells Dorothy and her companions to kill Elphaba and bring back her broom. Those companions are Boq, the Lion and a scarecrow. Boq rallies the citizens of the Emerald City against Elphaba. Glinda confronts Morrible about the tornado and is rebuffed, so she rushes to Kiamo Ko to warn her friend. Elphaba kidnaps Dorothy to retrieve the shoes. When Chistery reports that Fiyero has apparently died, Elphaba decides to surrender. She asks Glinda to keep the truth from the people and leaves the Grimmerie with her. Glinda hides and watches as Dorothy douses Elphaba with water, seemingly melting her.

Chistery, his speech restored, gives Glinda the green elixir bottle that belonged to Elphaba's mother. Glinda brings it to the Wizard, who realizes that he is Elphaba's biological father and the source of her power. Ashamed, he leaves Oz at Glinda's demand. Glinda has the monkeys arrest Morrible and restores rights to the Animals, who get their voices back. The Scarecrow turns out to be Fiyero, transformed by Elphaba's spell. He finds Elphaba hiding under a trapdoor, having faked her death so she will never be seen in Oz again. They leave Oz together through the surrounding desert.

  • Universal Pictures and Marc Platt, who had both produced the stage musical, announced a film adaptation in 2012. Release dates came and went. The film was scheduled for the 20th of December 2019, the 22nd of December 2021 and the 25th of December 2024, then moved to the 27th of November 2024. Delays piled up, partly because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Chu was hired to direct, and Erivo and Grande were cast in 2021. The first film finally opened on the 22nd of November 2024.

In April 2022, Chu announced that the adaptation would become two films. He explained that as the team prepared production, it "became impossible to wrestle the story of 'Wicked' into a single film without doing some real damage to it." Trimming songs and characters, he said, began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material. Two films would give the story a bigger canvas.

Stephen Schwartz backed the decision in June 2022 and pointed to a structural problem. "We found it very difficult to get past 'Defying Gravity' without a break," he said. The song was written to bring a curtain down, and any scene following it directly seemed hugely anti-climactic to him. Even a very long single movie would have forced cuts the creators did not want to make.

Schwartz also described the rule that would govern changes to the stage show. Producer Marc Platt's term for it was "additive." A change had to add something to the story or the characters and could not exist merely to be different. Schwartz said he expected to be able to justify every alteration to anyone who asked.

The title was revealed on the 16th of December 2024. Wicked: For Good shares its subtitle with the penultimate song of the musical. Chu defended it as always the right choice over the working title, Wicked: Part Two, though that older name was kept on certain international releases.

  • Principal photography began in England on the 9th of December 2022, alongside the first film. Production was suspended in July 2023 by the SAG-AFTRA strike, when filming had nearly finished. It resumed and concluded in January 2024. Erivo and Grande insisted that the song vocals be recorded live on set. Production sound mixer Simon Hayes used a variation of the techniques he had applied on Les Misérables. Christopher Scott choreographed the musical numbers.

Steven Spielberg's 1991 film Hook was Chu's inspiration for the large-scale sets and practical effects. He also cited two 1998 films, Pleasantville and The Truman Show, for how the Land of Oz is portrayed. Of that influence he said it "helps create this idea of the rebelliousness that this new younger generation are discovering." He called the result "an awakening of a generation."

Many sets from the first film were reused. The life-sized train to the Emerald City doubled as Glinda's personal locomotive. The Governor's Mansion in Munchkinland borrowed elements of Shiz University's library and Madame Morrible's office.

Boq's transformation into the Tin Man involved production designer Nathan Crowley, costume designer Paul Tazewell and prosthetic makeup designer Mark Coulier. Their eleven-piece prosthetic set took four hours to apply to Ethan Slater's face. It was designed in homage to Jack Haley's Tin Man in the 1939 film, with minimal visual effects used to simulate the joints. The Scarecrow goes the other way and departs from Ray Bolger's portrayal. It keeps much of Jonathan Bailey's likeness, including his natural brown eyes instead of the blue contacts he wore as Fiyero.

Industrial Light & Magic and Framestore provided the visual effects, with Pablo Helman as production visual effects supervisor. On the 6th of February 2024, post-production was confirmed to be underway. Chu worked remotely with editor Myron Kerstein using the newly released Apple Vision Pro. Editing then paused through most of 2024 so Chu could finish the first film and work out how the second would continue the story. It resumed in November 2024, using Avid Media Composer.

  • The soundtrack album arrived on the 21st of November 2025 through Republic and Verve Records, and the score album followed on the 5th of December. As with the first film, Schwartz composed the score alongside John Powell. Powell conducted the score cues with Gavin Greenaway, while original music director Stephen Oremus conducted the songs. Schwartz, Oremus and Greg Wells produced the soundtrack.

Jeff Atmajian updated William David Brohn's original orchestrations for the songs. He also enlarged the orchestra from the 23 musicians of the stage version to 125.

In November 2022, Schwartz said the film would include two new songs "to meet the demands of the storytelling." Those became "No Place Like Home" and "The Girl in the Bubble." Erivo collaborated on the first of them. The film also reworks older material. "Every Day More Wicked" reprises "No One Mourns the Wicked" and weaves in "The Wizard and I," "What Is This Feeling?" and "Popular" from the first act and film. "A Wicked Good Finale" adapts the stage "Finale" and appears on the score album rather than the soundtrack album.

In January 2025, Wells said he and Atmajian were recording live instrumentals, with sessions planned for May or June 2025 at AIR Studios. Mixing would follow over the next months. Later that month, a home studio belonging to Wells was destroyed in the 2025 Palisades Fire, and production halted.

  • The Cowardly Lion's appearance in the film's new Animal scenes changes the meaning of one of the musical's numbers. Elphaba sings "No Place Like Home" to convince fleeing Animals to stay, some of whom are building the Yellow Brick Road under forced labor. The Lion then arrives and reveals that she gave the flying monkeys their wings. Chu said in December 2024 that the film would be darker in tone, with Dorothy Gale taking a larger role than in the musical.

Before "The Wicked Witch of the East," Boq tries to leave Munchkinland but is stopped by a decree from Nessarose. The song itself was revised to remove its ableist implications. Nessarose's resentment over her disability became remorse over her relationship with Boq. She no longer walks upright after Elphaba's spell. Instead she flies.

In the Emerald City, Glinda accompanies the Wizard during "Wonderful," which has revised lyrics and a reprise of "Defying Gravity." Elphaba then finds a whole room of captive Animals, a discovery that plays against Glinda and Fiyero's wedding procession. Going deeper, she finds Dr. Dillamond caged and silent. Her outrage breaks the Animals out, and they stampede through the ceremony.

The tornado is shown on screen, with Nessarose searching for Boq in the storm before Dorothy's house crushes her. Dorothy and Toto appear throughout, from leaving Munchkinland to their first meeting with the Wizard, their confrontation with Elphaba and the launch of the hot air balloon. Dorothy's face is never clearly shown. She never meets Elphaba in Munchkinland or on the Yellow Brick Road. Fiyero comes across the flying monkeys, allies with them, and together they free Elphaba from the Gale Force.

"March of the Witch Hunters" is split in two, with Glinda singing "The Girl in the Bubble" in between, before she confronts Morrible. After "For Good," Glinda readmits the Animals to Ozian society by continuing her speech from the start of Wicked. During "A Wicked Good Finale" she visits the tower where Elphaba first flew west. At the end the Grimmerie activates for her. The final shot has Glinda whispering in Elphaba's ear, recreating the Broadway poster.

  • Work-in-progress footage from both films was shown at CinemaCon on the 26th of April 2023. On the 11th of February 2024, a 60-second teaser for Wicked aired during Super Bowl LVIII. It included brief scenes from Wicked: For Good, such as Glinda's wedding and the Wizard sending Dorothy and her companions to hunt Elphaba. In February 2025, Chu revealed that visual effects difficulties had kept the sequel's trailer out of Super Bowl LIX.

The two-minute trailer premiered at CinemaCon on the 2nd of April 2025, introduced by Erivo, Grande, Chu and Platt. It reached the public on the 4th of June, attached to a one-night re-release of Wicked. The Shiz University website from the first film's campaign was updated at the same time. It now played an audio recording of Madame Morrible's propaganda speech against Elphaba and urged visitors to report suspicious witch activity. Dr. Dillamond's classroom page replaced his chalkboard lecture with the phrase "Animals should be seen and not heard."

On the 9th of June, Universal reported that the trailer drew 113 million views in 24 hours, against 75 million for the first film's. A Wicked-themed challenge appeared on Lego Masters on Fox. RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars had Erivo and Grande as guest judges. Dancing with the Stars held a "Wicked Night," with Chu as a guest judge. On the 6th of November, NBC aired the musical special Wicked: One Wonderful Night, live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, and repeated it on the 31st of December. Wicked itself aired on NBC on the 19th of November 2025.

Universal's direct promotion was scaled back to a $90 million budget, down from $150 million for the first film. Yet the sequel had over 400 brand partners internationally, with $330 million in media value. That was the second-largest spend ever, just short of the record $350 million from the first film's partners.

A private screening took place at the DGA Theater in Manhattan on the 27th of October 2025. Two more followed in London on the 9th of November, one for the West End production and one for BAFTA voters. The world premiere was at the Suhai Music Hall in Sao Paulo on the 4th of November. Paris came next at Le Grand Rex on the 7th, then London's Cineworld Leicester Square on the 10th, Universal Studios Singapore on the 13th, and the Metropolitan Opera House in Manhattan on the 17th.

Universal released the film in the United States on the 21st of November 2025, in formats including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, 4DX and ScreenX. It had earlier been dated for the 26th of November and the 25th of December, but moved to avoid Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash. On video on demand it arrived on the 30th of December. Disc releases came on the 20th of January 2026. Peacock began streaming it on the 20th of March 2026, with Netflix following on the 20th of July.

  • Tickets went on sale on the 8th of October 2025, and the next day Fandango called it the site's best first-day pre-seller of 2025. It beat Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Infinity Castle, Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl and Superman. It also became the biggest PG-rated first-day pre-seller of all time, ahead of Frozen 2. Deadline projected a domestic opening of $112-115 million, while Variety projected as high as $150-180 million.

The film made $69.1 million in the United States and Canada on its opening day, including $30.8 million from previews. Those previews were the year's biggest, ahead of the $24.4 million for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The opening weekend brought $147 million domestically and $223 million internationally. That was the highest opening for a Broadway adaptation, topping the first film. It was also the second-biggest opening of 2025 behind A Minecraft Movie, and the third-biggest for a musical film behind remakes of The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.

The second weekend earned $62.8 million, a drop of 57 percent, and it finished behind newcomer Zootopia 2. Over the five-day Thanksgiving frame it totaled $93 million. In its third weekend it fell to third place with $17.3 million. The worldwide total reached $540.3 million, with $342.9 million from the United States and Canada and $197.4 million from other territories. Against a $150 million budget, that makes it the second-highest-grossing Oz film and musical film adaptation, behind only the first Wicked.

Initial reviews were positive, but later assessments leaned mixed and were less enthusiastic than for the first film. Critics generally praised the performances, especially those of Grande and Erivo, along with the production design and costumes. They took issue with the direction, the pacing and the connections back to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. CinemaScore audiences gave it an "A," the same as the first film. PostTrak respondents gave it a 92 percent positive score, with 82 percent saying they would definitely recommend it.

Kevin Maher of The Times gave four stars out of five and felt it "surpasses last year's box-office smash in verve, ambition and emotional ache," while noting sluggish moments. Johnny Oleksinski of the New York Post lamented the tonal imbalance from splitting the musical, yet found the "darker and grimmer Act 2" more compelling. Justin Chang of The New Yorker was negative, calling the film "so cowed by its iconic predecessor" that it reacts with destructiveness. Donald Clarke of The Irish Times gave two stars out of five.

The National Board of Review and the American Film Institute both placed the film among the top ten of 2025. It received nominations for five Golden Globe Awards and two British Academy Film Awards. At the Academy Awards, the first film earned ten nominations and two wins at the 97th ceremony. Wicked: For Good received none at the 98th, despite being shortlisted in eight categories.

In November 2024, Schwartz and Holzman said they had discussed doing "something" more connected to the film adaptation, though not necessarily a third or fourth film. The adaptation is evolving into a media franchise. The New York Times has reported that Universal Destinations & Experiences is considering theme park attractions based on the films, but no rides or attractions have been announced.
