— Ch. 1 · Development History And Origins —

Suikoden (video game).

~6 min read · Ch. 1 of 7
Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo spent roughly two years crafting the first Suikoden game. Scenario writer Yoshitaka Murayama drew inspiration from Romance of the Three Kingdoms and The Eternal Champion for the story and setting. The project began in 1993 and concluded with a release on the 15th of December 1995. This timeline allowed the team to build a complex world without rushing the narrative. The development process involved creating over one hundred unique characters and integrating them into a cohesive plot. Murayama wanted to explore political struggles rather than simple good versus evil tropes. He studied historical novels to understand how factions rise and fall within empires. The team aimed to create a role-playing experience that felt different from Final Fantasy VII. They focused on recruiting allies instead of just defeating monsters. The goal was to make every character feel essential to the larger conflict.

Gameplay Mechanics And Systems

Combat triggers through random encounters on the wilderness areas or dungeons. Both player-controlled party members and computer-controlled enemies select actions before each turn commences. Characters carry out their actions based on their speed statistics. A variety of statistics determine in-game combat ability including optimum weapon range. Short range characters are typically swordsmen who must be placed at the front row of the six party formation. Medium range attacks can fight from either the front or back row while long range attackers benefit more from fighting in the back row. If all six characters lose all hit points it is game over and the player must restart from a save point. Two other types of battle systems exist: duel battles and war battles. In one-on-one duels there are three commands: attack defend and special. Attack beats defend, defend beats special and special beats attack. Strategic war battles feature four major groups: charge attacks bow attacks magic attacks and others. Charge attacks beat bow attacks, bow attacks beat magic attacks and magic attacks beat charge attacks.

Narrative Structure And Plot Summary

The Hero is the son of a Great General named Teo McDohl within the Scarlet Moon Empire. Teo is called away to fight a battle in the northlands leaving his son alone under guardianship. Long-time friend Ted and servants Cleo Pahn and Gremio accompany the hero to begin his career. He soon comes to realize through missions that corruption within the Empire has enslaved the populace. Through Ted he comes into possession of the Rune of Life and Death also known as the Soul Eater. The Rune is ruthlessly hunted for by corrupt officials within the Empire and their manipulators. The Hero and companions are forced to flee the capital city of Gregminster with help from Viktor. Unable to move properly Ted stays behind to delay the enemy while Pahn decides to side with the Empire. After escaping Viktor reveals he is part of an ongoing rebellion determined to face the corrupt Empire. Taking a liking to The Hero he enlists him into the organization despite reluctance from warrior Flik. In his short time there the hero is only convinced of the need to struggle when the hideout is attacked. Imperial forces kill Odessa after she tries to protect an innocent child. Recruiting Mathiu Silverberg the brother of Odessa the Hero becomes the new Liberation Army leader.

Character Roster And Recruitment

Suikoden boasts over 108 allied characters and numerous enemies and neutral characters. Many of these characters appear in later games in the Suikoden franchise. The Hero may recruit up to 107 new characters to his cause though not all are playable. Some characters can only be recruited if the party has reached a certain experience level or found a special item. Characters have a certain number of spell usages per spell level governed generally by their magic statistic. For instance a character with four level 1 spell slots and a Water Rune could cast Kindness Drops four times. Other runes offer different benefits such as allowing a character to deal double damage at the cost of a 50% reduction in defense. Most runes can only be used in a limited capacity. Weapons are unique to each character and require sharpening in towns that have blacksmiths. There are no weapon shops in Suikoden and equipment shopping is limited to armor and items. Information gathering and character recruiting is also a commonplace occurrence within towns. Wilderness areas feature random encounters with monsters that do not increase in difficulty as the player's party advances. The amount of experience characters gain is based on their level so a low-level character receives more experience than a high level one.

IGN claimed the game was one of the best RPGs ever made despite its simple story. Jeff Gerstmann stated in GameSpot that although not ground-breaking it was a good game if short and easy. Game Revolution gave the game an A-minus quoting particularly its astonishing musical scores.
