Five Nights at Freddy's

  • Five Nights at Freddy's, known to fans as FNaF, asks its players for one thing: stay alive from midnight until 6 a.m. in a pizza restaurant after closing time. Scott Cawthon created the series, and it has grown from video games into novels, graphic novels, and films. Each story follows a night guard, or a similar character, through five levels called nights. Homicidal animatronic characters hunt that person the whole way. Every game is set in a different place tied to a fictional restaurant chain called Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Where did this idea come from? What does a player actually do between midnight and dawn? And why do critics and devoted fans so often see the series so differently?

  • Players of Cawthon's family-friendly game Chipper & Sons Lumber Co. told him that its main character looked like a "scary animatronic animal." Cawthon had mostly made Christian-oriented games, and the criticism discouraged him at first. He turned it around by building something intentionally frightening. Five Nights at Freddy's reached Microsoft Windows on the 8th of August 2014 through the site Desura. A Steam release followed once the game won approval on the crowdsourcing platform Greenlight. Android and iOS ports arrived on the 27th of August and the 11th of September.

Cawthon made the game with Clickteam Fusion 2.5, using Autodesk 3ds Max for the 3D graphics. Its hero is a security guard named Mike Schmidt, who must outlast the pizzeria's wandering machines.

The sequels came at remarkable speed. A trailer for Five Nights at Freddy's 2 appeared on the 21st of October 2014, and the game reached Steam on the 11th of November. Its new player character, Jeremy Fitzgerald, faces ten animatronics in a "new and improved" Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Five Nights at Freddy's 3 launched on the 3rd of March 2015 and moved the action to a soon-to-open horror attraction called Fazbear's Fright.

Five Nights at Freddy's 4 was teased in April 2015 as "The Final Chapter," with a Halloween release date. Cawthon later moved the date to the 8th of August. Then he announced on the 23rd of July that he had finished it, and put it on Steam that same day. The player is an unnamed child in a bedroom, guarding two doors against "nightmare animatronics."

This pace earned a Guinness World Record for "most video game sequels in a single year," covering games released between August 2014 and June 2015.

  • Power is the first thing to run out in the original Five Nights at Freddy's. Every game hands the player a limited resource, and when it is depleted the player is left exposed. In Five Nights at Freddy's 3, the equivalent is failing systems that need rebooting. In Security Breach, the player controls a friendly animatronic named Glamrock Freddy, who must be recharged every hour.

As the nights pass, the animatronics grow more aggressive. A player who cannot defend against them is jumpscared and receives a game over. Surviving all five nights wins the game.

Security cameras are the main tool in many entries, letting players track the machines through the building. Five Nights at Freddy's 2 added a music box that must be kept wound through the camera feed. If it runs down, an animatronic called the Puppet activates. Five Nights at Freddy's 3 added an audio system that can lure its threat from area to area. In Security Breach, the camera system is accessed through Gregory's watch. Lights are a recurring mechanic, used to ward off animatronics or reveal their presence. Doors let players block them in Five Nights at Freddy's, Five Nights at Freddy's 4, and Help Wanted.

The reason the machines hunt is darker than the mechanics suggest. William Afton, co-founder of the restaurant, murdered children, and many of the animatronics are possessed by their souls. His first victim was the daughter of the restaurant's other co-founder. Her spirit is the Puppet from that music box. In Five Nights at Freddy's 3, the lone animatronic Springtrap turns out to contain an undead Afton himself. Later games would send new characters into other buildings entirely, built with a new partner.

  • Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator arrived on the 4th of December 2017 as freeware on Steam. Cawthon teased it days earlier as a spin-off, though it counts as a mainline release. Players manage a pizzeria by day and fend off animatronics at night. Ultimate Custom Night, also freeware, gathers fifty animatronics from earlier games and lets the player set how aggressive each one is. It offers a choice of offices, cutscenes to earn, and 16 themed game modes.

Sony's State of Play livestream on the 25th of March 2019 brought the announcement of Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted. It reached Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR on the 28th of May. Cawthon first proposed recreating the original game in virtual reality. The project grew into an anthology of minigames based on the first five games, made with Steel Wool Studios. On the 29th of November 2019, the first four games also came to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Security Breach was revealed in a teaser on the 16th of September 2020 and delayed many times before landing on the 16th of December 2021. It was the second Steel Wool collaboration. Its hero, Gregory, is a young boy trapped in the Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex, a massive entertainment complex. He must complete tasks while free-roaming animatronics watch the halls.

In 2021, after backlash over donations to members of the Republican Party, Cawthon announced his retirement from the franchise. He said someone of his choosing would be "running the show" from then on.

The story continued without him as sole author. Ruin, a free expansion for Security Breach, was announced in May 2022 and released on the 25th of July 2023. A girl named Cassie searches the wrecked Mega Pizzaplex for Gregory, deactivating security nodes while ruined animatronics attack. Xbox versions followed on the 23rd of April 2024.

Help Wanted 2 was announced on the 24th of May 2023 and released on the 14th of December for Oculus Quest and PlayStation VR 2. Its minigames draw on Sister Location and Security Breach. A non-VR PlayStation 5 port followed on the 20th of June 2024. Five Nights at Freddy's: Secret of the Mimic, the eleventh main installment, was announced on the 6th of August 2024 and released on the 13th of June 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Windows.

  • FNaF World was announced on the 15th of September 2015, and it abandoned survival horror altogether. It is a role-playing game starring characters from earlier entries, where players fight enemies and earn perks and items. Cawthon first planned a release on the 2nd of February 2016. He moved it to the 22nd of January, then released it a day early on the 21st.

The 13th of September 2019 brought word of Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery, an augmented reality game with location-based play. The startup Illumix developed it, and it was released for free in November 2019. Its servers shut down on the 14th of March 2024.

Some spin-offs served a purpose beyond play. Freddy in Space 2, a side-scrolling platform shooter, came out free on Game Jolt on the 3rd of December 2019. It promoted a charity livestream hosted by the Game Theorists YouTube channel. Security Breach: Fury's Rage, a free side-scrolling beat 'em up, appeared on the 28th of April 2021 to make up for the second delay of Security Breach. Freddy in Space 3: Chica in Space came out on the 18th of October 2023 under the title FNAF: The Movie: The Game. Cawthon described it as a spoiler-heavy tie-in to the film.

Mega Cat Studios developed Five Nights at Freddy's: Into the Pit, a role-playing adventure horror game based on the first story in the Fazbear Frights short story anthology. It reached PlayStation and Xbox on the 27th of September 2024, and Nintendo Switch on the 31st of October. Five Laps at Freddy's, a kart racing game, was announced on the 19th of June 2024 to coincide with the series' 10th anniversary.

The oddest release was Five Nights at Freddy's: Survival Crew, an official Roblox adaptation. Its developers, Metaverse Team Frights, accidentally released it in an unfinished state on the 20th of December 2023. Major backlash forced it offline immediately. Cawthon promised a functional version sometime in 2024. In its brief life, players compared it to the cooperative horror game Dead by Daylight.

  • The first of three major Scholastic novels, Five Nights at Freddy's: The Silver Eyes, reached Amazon Kindle on the 17th of December 2015. A paperback followed on the 27th of September 2016. Cawthon said the novel "expands the mythos and reveals a human element never before seen in the games." The Twisted Ones came out on the 27th of June 2017, and The Fourth Closet on the 26th of June 2018. Many books of short stories inspired by the games followed, including Tales from the Pizzaplex.

Universal Pictures released the film adaptation on the 27th of October 2023, in United States theaters and on Peacock the same day. Emma Tammi directed it and co-wrote the screenplay with Cawthon and Seth Cuddeback. Josh Hutcherson stars. The film became the highest-grossing worldwide release in the history of Blumhouse Productions, earning nearly $300 million. A sequel, Five Nights at Freddy's 2, arrived on the 5th of December 2025.

  • Metacritic gave the original game a 78, which it labels "generally favorable." Omri Petitte of PC Gamer called it a "less-is-more" experience in which fear grows from anticipation rather than direct threats. He found the gameplay repetitive once its mechanics were mastered. Ryan Bates of GameRevolution praised the audio and the simple mechanics as "horror done right," but thought the game too short.

Scores then fell and scattered. Five Nights at Freddy's 2 earned a 62, Five Nights at Freddy's 3 a 68, and Five Nights at Freddy's 4 the series' lowest, a 51. Destructoid and TouchArcade liked the second game's new mechanics, while Mitch Vogel of Nintendo Life found its difficulty punishing and its jumpscares excessive. The Escapist and Gamezebo praised the fourth game's darker tone and emotional subtext. Nic Rowen of Destructoid called its gameplay confusing.

Sister Location also scored a 62. Patricia Hernandez of Kotaku called it Cawthon's "most ambitious game yet." Angelo M. D'Argenio of GameCrate argued that each night felt like its own tutorial. Rock Paper Shotgun and GameCrate applauded the blend of business simulation and survival horror in Pizzeria Simulator.

Help Wanted earned an 80 on PlayStation 4, with reviewers praising its atmosphere and virtual reality. Nintendo Life rated its non-VR Switch version poorly. Security Breach received a 64, with Ben Croshaw of The Escapist criticizing its technical problems and clunky save system. Into the Pit took the series' highest score, an 87.

The film drew harsher judgment. Metacritic gave the first a 33 out of 100. Murtada Elfadl of Variety said the sets lacked color, and Benjamin Lee of The Guardian called the protagonist boring. Simon Abrams of RogerEbert.com gave it two stars out of four. He said the atmosphere was effective but the characters lacked development. The sequel fared worse, with a Metacritic score of 24. James Mottram of NME found the jumpscares ineffective, and Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter thought the plot too similar to the first film's.

  • In May 2015, YouTube reported that Five Nights at Freddy's videos made up the eighth-most-watched playthroughs on the platform. PewDiePie, Markiplier, and Jacksepticeye had earned millions of views on their runs through the series, which drew new players to the games. The story itself is interpretive, non-linear, and cryptic, so fans debate it endlessly. The Game Theorists channel decodes the lore, and by 2023 its FNaF videos numbered over 60 and had drawn 800 million views combined.

Thousands of fan games have copied the mechanics. Game Jolt now treats FNaF-inspired projects as a separate genre to keep its catalog organized. Cawthon decided to back some of them. On the 21st of August 2020, he announced a plan to fund and publish fan-made games, bundled with earlier installments in their series. The Fazbear Fanverse includes the One Night at Flumpty's series, the Five Nights at Candy's series, the Popgoes series, and The Joy of Creation. One Night at Flumpty's reached Android on the 31st of October 2020 and iOS on the 18th of November, with two sequels in 2021.

Music spread the series as well. Fan-made songs, including those by The Living Tombstone, have drawn hundreds of millions of views. Their first FNaF song played in the closing credits of the film. Funko and Todd McFarlane are among the producers of toys and collectibles. Between September and November 2025, a themed attraction based on the film appeared on select nights at Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights.
