  • Roblox, pronounced ROH-bloks, reported an average of 85.3 million daily active users as of February 2025. The company also says its monthly players include half of all American children under the age of 16. Those numbers belong to an online platform where people write programs, build games, and play the games of strangers. Most of what fills it was not made by the company. So who builds it all, and how does anyone earn a living there? How did a small project grow this large? And what happens when a place this popular with children has to decide what its anonymous visitors may say and make?

  • Before Roblox existed, David Baszucki and Erik Cassel both worked at Knowledge Revolution, a company that made educational and physics simulation software. When MSC Software acquired the firm, the two left. Baszucki then began investing in early social sites such as Friendster. Around that time he came up with the idea of a physics sandbox that paired creation tools with a social network. He and Cassel started building it in 2004 and set up the Roblox Corporation. Their early working name for the project was DynaBlocks.

One decision came early and shaped everything after it. The two agreed that the platform would rely entirely on what users made. The company would supply the tools and, later in development, the server hosting.

The first versions were rough. Baszucki and Cassel worked alone and built their own games before the creation tools were even finished. Avatars did not yet animate, and most features existed only in their simplest form. Advertising on a few websites brought in a few dozen playtesters.

In mid-2006 the first two employees other than the founders arrived. Matt Dusek took charge of communication features, and John Shedletsky joined to work on other parts of the platform. Roblox opened to the public on the 1st of September 2006, and Roblox Studio became available that same year. Early community creations included paintball games, haunted houses, and model trains that players could ride.

The business model took shape quickly. In 2007 the company introduced a paid subscription called Builders Club. Members could create more games under one account, sell virtual clothing, hide outside advertisements, and earn Robux every day. Two higher tiers, Turbo Builders Club and Outrageous Builders Club, followed. In 2008 the company stopped building its own showcase games and left the platform entirely to its users.

For its first years, Roblox ran on two currencies, Robux and Tickets, which players called Tix. Tix would be discontinued in April 2016, because the company feared newer players would be confused by having two kinds of money.

  • As of 2020, Roblox reported that more than 2 million developers used Roblox Studio to make over 20 million games each year. The company also said a majority of those developers were minors. Studio is both the game engine and the development software. Games on the platform mostly run on Luau, a dialect of the programming language Lua 5.1. Parts of the engine were written in C++. Studio includes pre-made templates that beginners can modify, and since November 2021 Luau has been open source under the MIT License.

The tools kept growing. Between 2013 and 2014, updates added character animations, Studio plugins, and Developer Stats. That last feature shows creators how many players their games attract and how long those players stay. In May 2015 an update made the physics engine smoother and less tied to blocks. It arrived with Smooth Terrain, which sharpened the look of in-game landscapes.

The games themselves range from role-playing worlds to prison escapes. By July 2020, at least 20 had been played more than one billion times, and at least 5,000 had passed one million plays. The biggest was Adopt Me!, a role-playing game. It had been played over 10 billion times by July 2020 and set a platform record of more than 1.6 million users online at once.

Hits were not new. Years earlier, a creator named Luke Weber, known as Stickmasterluke, had built a following of more than ten million plays across all his games combined.

In March 2021, TechCrunch observed that Roblox games break from familiar free-to-play habits. Successful ones were built for immediate satisfaction. Adding tutorials sharply lowered player engagement, which runs against established wisdom. Many companies have also used the platform to host advergames that promote their products. In 2021 the company began calling games "experiences", following its involvement in the Epic Games v. Apple lawsuit.

The tool update of 2013-14 carried one more feature that mattered more than any plugin. It was the Developer Exchange, and at first it allowed payouts of only up to $500.

  • To cash out through the Developer Exchange, a creator needs at least 30,000 Robux. In 2020, Roblox reported that roughly 345,000 game developers had earned money through the program. Robux is the platform's virtual currency, bought with real money and spent on avatar items or on games that charge for access. Some designers of avatar items work at it full time, and the highest-earning creators are reported to make over $100,000 a year from item sales.

The totals add up. At the 2017 Roblox Developers Conference, officials said about 1.7 million creators had collectively earned at least $30 million that year. Developers were projected to earn around $250 million across 2020. Several individual games have taken in more than $10 million. The iOS version of Roblox passed $1 billion in lifetime revenue in November 2019, $1.5 billion in June 2020, and $2 billion in October 2020. That made it the iOS app with the second-highest revenue. In 2020 Roblox also ranked as the third highest-grossing game, behind the Tencent titles PUBG and Honor of Kings.

For most of the platform's history, Roblox itself made most avatar items. Since 2019, select users have been able to publish accessories, animations, bundles, and more.

Some items carry a "limited" status. Only a few exist, and supply and demand set the price instead of a fixed tag. They behave much like non-fungible tokens, and the most valuable cost millions of Robux. Once the original supply runs out, owners can resell them at a higher price. Subscribers to Roblox Plus can trade limiteds with each other, though limiteds made by the community cannot be traded. Plus also gives discounts on Robux and in-game purchases. It replaced Roblox Premium in May 2026, and Premium had itself replaced the Builders Club memberships in 2019.

Valuable items attract thieves. Many scams promise free Robux through websites and games built to look like giveaways. Then there are "beamers", who take over accounts using phishing websites or ploys that capture a victim's session token. They sell the stolen limiteds for real money or cryptocurrency through marketplace sites and Discord chat rooms, and the slang for the whole process is "beaming". Roblox offers hacked users a rollback of their items, but only once per account.

  • By August 2011, Roblox had about 6.8 million active users a month and ranked as the second-most popular kids entertainment site. The year's profit was up 75% from 2010. In June 2011 the company held a fundraiser that brought in over $4 million. That August the first Roblox convention, the Roblox Rally, drew more than 1,000 people to San Francisco. In 2013 Cassel, the co-founder, died of cancer. By January 2014 the platform had 10 to 12 million monthly players, though most were guests without registered accounts.

Phones came next. By May 2012 Roblox had released a stripped-down iOS app with only its social features, and a macOS version existed by then. A full iOS version that could play games arrived on the 11th of December 2012, though it lacked Roblox Studio. The Android version followed on the 16th of July 2014. The Xbox One version was announced in September 2015 and released on the 20th of November. It launched with only 15 staff-picked games because of Entertainment Software Rating Board concerns, and an approval process for publishing came later.

Virtual reality and desktop followed. Roblox reached Oculus Rift in April 2016, and a dedicated Windows 10 app came that June. Over three years the company reworked how its releases were built, until all versions ran on the same APIs and only a few engineers were needed to maintain them. Public beta versions for Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro opened on the 27th of July 2023, with full versions in September. A PlayStation 4 port was released on the 10th of October 2023. A native PlayStation 5 version arrived on the 14th of April 2026.

The real surge started in the second half of the 2010s. Roblox had about 30 million monthly active users in December 2016 and 90 million by April 2019. In 2020, lockdowns pushed tens of millions of children onto the platform as a way to talk with friends. Between March and April the company reported over 120 million monthly players, which it said included more than half of American kids under 16. Average daily players rose 85% over 2019. In March 2021 the Roblox Corporation went public at a valuation of $45 billion. It averaged 45.5 million daily users through 2021, a 40% rise from the end of 2020.

Some features disappeared along the way. Guest play ended in October 2017, and the official player forums closed that same year for an undisclosed reason.

China was a harder market. Roblox signed a partnership with Tencent in 2019 and received permission to release there on the 3rd of December 2020. The result, called LuoBu, launched in July 2021 under Tencent's operation and was heavily restricted by Chinese video game rules. It never grew much or made much money, and it shut down in January 2022. Roblox said it had only ever been a test version and that it would redevelop the release. In July 2022 an unknown hacker leaked business slides from presentations dating back to 2017. They showed plans to alter the platform worldwide to satisfy Chinese censorship laws. They also showed a worry that Tencent might hack the platform and build a rival.

  • In July 2020, Baszucki formally announced a plan to build a "metaverse", a set of interconnected virtual worlds. He described it as part of a 30-year vision in which users hold a "fully-fledged digital identity". The announcement came with Developer Events, a tool for creators to run in-game events and for users to find them. It also brought a partnership with the record label Monstercat, which let creators use its catalog in games. A "Party Place" system had already given players spaces for meetups and virtual concerts. In 2021 Baszucki listed "eight different characteristics" the platform would pursue and named the books Ready Player One and Ready Player Two as inspirations.

The technology followed the ambition. Automatic machine translation arrived in game chat in 2020, at first supporting 9 languages. Facial animation based on motion tracking of a player's real face was announced in 2022 and released in 2023. In March 2024, two generative artificial intelligence tools came to Roblox Studio. One turns three-dimensional body meshes into live-animated avatars. The other creates textures from text descriptions.

The concerts became the showpiece. Lil Nas X performed one and debuted his song "Holiday" during it. Zara Larsson and Twenty One Pilots later starred in others. Roblox has also run events to promote the films Wonder Woman 1984 and Aquaman. In October 2021, a partnership with Chipotle Mexican Grill gave away $1 million of burritos to the first 30,000 people each day for the chain's "Halloween Boorito" promotion.

The company's own events include BloxCon, a convention for ordinary players, plus Easter egg hunts, Halloween events, and "Giftsplosions". The "Bloxy Awards" ceremony doubles as a fundraiser, and its virtual 2020 edition drew 600,000 viewers. In 2022 it was renamed the Roblox Innovation Awards. Each year the Roblox Developers Conference gathers top creators for three days, by invitation, in San Francisco, and the company has held similar events in cities such as London.

Players have shaped the culture too. Some have used the platform to show support for the George Floyd protests and Black Lives Matter. Others held religious processions that lockdowns had paused. The character death sound, usually written as "oof", became an internet meme. It was originally made for the video game Messiah, released in 2000. Roblox replaced it in 2022 after a copyright dispute with the sound's producer, then reinstated it in July 2025 after gaining the rights. A hyperpop scene called "Robloxcore" grew after several artists uploaded music to the game in late 2020.

The brand reached shelves as well. In January 2017 the toy maker Jazwares began making licensed minifigures with codes for virtual items, plus blind boxes of random figures. In April 2021 Hasbro released Roblox Nerf blasters and a Roblox version of Monopoly.

Music also brought a legal fight. In June 2021 the National Music Publishers' Association sued, claiming the platform let users upload copyrighted songs without licenses. The suit was dropped by September, and the two sides agreed to build a framework for future publisher partnerships.

  • A twelve-year-old on Roblox can only communicate with users aged 9 to 15. Communication is limited to similar age groups, and nobody can chat at all until they pass an age check. That check uses either ID verification or a video analyzed by age estimation software. Both are handled by Persona, a third-party provider. The software can place a user in the wrong group, and users can correct it by providing an ID.

The tools themselves are broad. Players can use in-game chat and direct messages, and voice chat is open to verified players over 13. Communities, formerly called Groups, work like internet forums. Friends were officially called "connections" from 2025 to 2026. A further tier, "Trusted Friends", allows unfiltered messages and the sharing of personal information. When one person is over 18 and the other is between 13 and 17, both must prove they know each other in real life. They can do so by scanning each other's QR codes or by importing phone contacts.

Age ratings for games were announced in 2022, aimed at young adults, the fastest-growing group on the platform. The tiers are everyone, 9+, 13+, and 17+. At first 13+ was the ceiling. In June 2023 a 17+ rating arrived that allows graphic violence, romantic themes, and alcohol, and those games require ID verification. In November 2024 Roblox revamped its parental controls. For users under 13 they cover screen time and private messaging, and parents can create separate accounts to manage a child's account.

The pressure grew after multiple lawsuits and controversies over child safety. Age verification became mandatory for any communication, beginning in certain countries in December 2025 and worldwide in January 2026. A $12 million settlement was held up as a model for platform accountability. Its funds were set aside for youth programs and law enforcement, and its terms included non-encrypted messaging for safety.

The plan for June 2026 splits accounts into three tiers. "Roblox Kids" is for users under 9, "Roblox Select" is for ages 9 to 15, and standard Roblox is for 16 and over. Users who skip age verification can only play games rated 9+ or lower. Even publishing a game will require age estimation or verification.

  • Common Sense Media rated Roblox 4 out of 5 stars, praising its variety of games and how it encourages creativity in children. It warned that the decentralized design makes quality uneven and advised turning off chat for young players. Patricia E. Vance of the Family Online Safety Institute urged parents to monitor interactions but praised the platform for "allowing kids to play, explore, socialize, create and learn in a self-directed way". Trusted Reviews also praised Roblox Studio, saying that for anyone building computer science skills or seeking an audience, "the appeal is obvious".

Critics focus on what else is there. Sexual and politically extremist material has appeared throughout the platform's history. Examples include virtual sex clubs and nightclubs, known as "condo" games, and games with neo-Nazi roleplay. Others recreated real massacres, including the Christchurch mosque shootings, Columbine, and Uvalde. More than 1,600 people work to remove such material. A 2020 Fast Company investigation found sexual content widespread and compared the cleanup to whack-a-mole.

Reports of sexual predation on child players led a 2024 Bloomberg Businessweek report to blame weak moderation, an overreliance on artificial intelligence, and user anonymity. Since January 2025, United States police have arrested at least six people accused of using Roblox to find and exploit children. Some players formed "vigilante groups" that mass report predatory users and games. Roblox says these groups do more harm than good, partly because impersonating children can lure in predators. In August 2025 it sent a cease and desist to a YouTuber accused of vigilantism, which drew widespread criticism.

The business model draws fire too. Professor Jane Juffer of Cornell University accused Roblox of encouraging consumerism in children. Some found microtransactions so easy that children spent large sums without their parents knowing. In April 2022, Truth in Advertising filed a Federal Trade Commission complaint over undisclosed advertising. Roblox hid ads from users under 13 starting in March 2023, but advergames were exempt, and Truth in Advertising and the children's rights group 5Rights objected again.

The YouTube channel People Make Games accused Roblox of exploiting young developers with promises of big earnings, then taking high revenue cuts and leaving them little or no income. It compared the model to company scrip, and later said the platform lacked oversight and any way to address developer abuse. It also likened the market for limited collectibles to gambling. Hindenburg Research accused the company of artificially inflating its monthly active player count. In February 2025, Bloomberg News reported a Securities and Exchange Commission investigation for unknown reasons.

Governments have reacted. Roblox is blocked or banned in Algeria, China, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Russia, and Turkey. The United Arab Emirates banned it from 2018 to 2021. Kuwait banned it from August to October 2025 and lifted the ban once Roblox agreed to new safety and content restrictions. Turkey cited gambling and child sexual abuse, Qatar cited child safety, and Russia cited "extremist materials" and LGBTQ-related material. The Netherlands and Belgium restricted certain games over lootboxes, which hand out items by chance.

Warnings and threats multiplied in 2025. Indonesia asked for stronger chat filters in August or risk a ban, and members of Bahrain's parliament began drafting a ban bill. Surabaya banned Roblox in its primary and secondary schools, and Kazakhstan and Bishkek, in Kyrgyzstan, warned parents. Guatemala had already warned parents in 2021. In September 2025 the Mexican state of Nuevo León told parents through its civil and cyber police that Roblox was not a safe platform for children.
