Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

8 sections
  • Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, a 2017 survival horror game from Capcom, begins with an email. It comes from Mia, a woman who has been missing for three years. Her husband, systems engineer Ethan Winters, follows the message to a derelict plantation in Dulvey, Louisiana. What he finds there is not the kind of Resident Evil that recent games had trained players to expect. This one is seen through his eyes, and it is the first main entry in the series to use a first-person view. Why did Capcom steer a franchise away from gunfights and back toward helplessness? What lives in the Baker house, and what does it want? And how did a project that began as a virtual reality experiment reach millions of players?

  • Development began around February 2014, and its first goal was a correction. Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 had pushed the series toward action, and the reception of Resident Evil 6 in particular had drawn criticism. The team wanted to return to survival horror. They studied three films: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre from 1974, The Evil Dead from 1981, and Saw from 2004. Those influences led them to shrink the game down to a single location. A first-person camera, they decided, would pull players inside that place. The decision about perspective came long before anyone considered virtual reality.

Producer Masachika Kawata wanted a lead character who was "totally new" rather than a "superhero" type. His examples were Chris in Resident Evil 5 and Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil 6. Koshi Nakanishi, who had previously directed Resident Evil: Revelations, led a team of about 120 people. For the first time in the series, the narrative designer was a westerner. Richard Pearsey had written the two expansion packs for F.E.A.R. and had been one of the narrative designers on Spec Ops: The Line.

Virtual reality arrived in October 2015, when Capcom formed a separate team for it. The game ran on the RE Engine, Capcom's in-house technology, which came with VR development tools. Headsets forced a rethink of the art. Flat textures and inaccurate object sizes that had been tolerated before were discarded, and the textures grew far more detailed.

At E3 2015, a year before the game's announcement, Capcom showed a first-person horror demo for VR called KI7CHEN. It ran on the same engine. Capcom treated it as a test of how the engine and its VR abilities would be received. The demo's logo carried a hint, because the letter T was drawn to look like a 7. Almost nobody noticed.

Some of the creatures began as physical models built by make-up artists, a number of them from actual meat. Those models were scanned using photogrammetry, a technique that produced over half of the game's general assets. The same method could not capture Louisiana itself, since the equipment was too demanding to transport. Capcom modeled the setting by hand.

Pressure also came from above. According to Jun Takeuchi, senior figures at Capcom wanted a live service game with online multiplayer and microtransactions. That demand weighed on the team until Takeuchi was asked to join the project. He scrapped those plans. When the game was finally revealed, it was only about 65 percent complete, so much of the work still lay ahead.

  • Ethan Winters has eight inventory slots, plus four more tied to the directional pad where he can assign weapons, and every one of them matters. Finding backpacks adds space. Safe rooms, which enemies cannot enter, hold item boxes for storing the excess and tape recorders that save progress. Players can examine items to find hidden purposes, discard them, or combine them. Combining produces key items and crafted supplies such as first aid solution, ammunition, and psychostimulants that briefly reveal the location of uncollected items.

Ethan is a civilian with little combat experience, and the game never lets the player forget it. He can still find weapons, from pocket knives and chainsaws to handguns, shotguns, and a makeshift flamethrower. Yet firearms are weaker than in the earlier action-oriented titles. Enemies are tougher, can sidestep and block, and do not stay down forever. Stealth and running away are often the wiser choices. New commands let him guard against attacks to reduce damage and crouch to squeeze through tight spaces or slip past enemies.

Opposition comes from the Baker family and from humanoid fungal creatures called the Molded, which attack on sight. Damage appears as blood on the screen, and a codex on Ethan's wrist shows his condition while he navigates the inventory. Herbs and first aid solution restore health. Exploration drives everything, since puzzles around the estate must be solved to open routes, obtain key items, and advance the story. Some puzzles demand particular items.

VHS tapes scattered around the estate offer a different view. Playing one in a VCR lets the player run through a short section as the person who filmed it. The tapes are optional, but they add to the story and can reveal puzzle solutions. Their concept resembles the Zapping System from Resident Evil 2.

Three difficulty settings are offered: Easy, Normal as the default, and Madhouse, which becomes available after the game is beaten. Difficulty changes enemy strength, how plentiful items are, and how often the game saves automatically. Madhouse also requires Ethan to use a cassette tape to save at a recorder. The PlayStation 4 version can be played in virtual reality through PlayStation VR. Beat the game within a time limit or on a certain difficulty and bonus items become available on later runs. Examples include infinite-ammo weapons, shoes that raise Ethan's speed, and glasses with a permanent psychostimulant effect.

  • In the basement of the Baker house, Ethan finds Mia imprisoned, and the reunion lasts only moments. She turns violent, and he is forced to kill her. A call from a woman named Zoe offers help, but a revived Mia attacks again and cuts off his left hand. Jack Baker, the family patriarch, then subdues him. Zoe sews the hand back on in a second house. Ethan is held by Jack, Jack's wife Marguerite, their son Lucas, and an elderly woman in a wheelchair. He escapes, yet Jack keeps finding him and keeps surviving fatal wounds and dismemberment.

Zoe later explains that she is the Bakers' daughter. She says that she, her family, and Mia all share one ailment, and that a special serum can cure it. Ethan travels to an old house for the ingredients and kills Marguerite there. Afterward he sees visions of an unknown young girl. Lucas then seizes Zoe and Mia and forces Ethan through a booby-trapped barn. Ethan outwits him and frees both women. Zoe prepares two doses of serum. A heavily mutated Jack attacks, and Ethan spends one dose on him, apparently ending him.

Ethan must then choose which woman to cure. If he picks Zoe, Mia is heartbroken, though he promises to send help. On the escape boat, Zoe explains that the Bakers fell ill after Mia arrived with a young girl named Eveline, around the time a tanker ship's wreck ran aground nearby. Eveline kills Zoe and knocks Ethan off the boat. If he picks Mia instead, Zoe offers a bitter farewell, and Eveline attacks the couple near the tanker.

Mia, meanwhile, ends up on the wrecked ship, haunted by visions of Eveline, who calls her mother. Her memory returns and reveals a hidden past. Mia was a covert operative for a mysterious corporation that built Eveline as a bioweapon. She and a fellow agent named Alan Droney were escorting Eveline aboard the tanker when the girl escaped containment and grounded the ship. Eveline killed Alan and infected Mia to force her into the role of mother. Mia gives Ethan a vial of Eveline's genetic material. If Zoe was cured, Mia falls under Eveline's control and Ethan must kill her. If Mia was cured, she resists just long enough to seal him out of the ship and save him.

Ethan then finds a hidden laboratory inside an abandoned salt mine. There he learns that Eveline spreads a psychotropic mold that gives her control over her victims' minds. It also brings insanity, superhuman regeneration, and mutations. She grew up obsessed with having a family, which explains why she infected Mia and the Bakers and lured Ethan. The lab also shows that Lucas had been immunized against her control by the corporation, in exchange for observations about her. Ethan synthesizes a toxin from her genetic material and follows tunnels back to the Baker Ranch. He overcomes her hallucinations and injects her. Eveline proves to be the elderly woman in the wheelchair, who has been aging rapidly since her escape. She mutates into a huge monster, and with help from a military squad, Ethan kills her.

The squad's leader is Chris Redfield, who extracts Ethan by helicopter. If Mia was cured, she is found alive aboard. If not, Ethan throws away the phone holding her last message and says "goodbye". As the helicopter flies off, it is seen to carry a variation of the Umbrella Corporation logo. That detail points toward the downloadable episodes, where Chris becomes a playable hero.

  • In June 2017, a web series called Sewer Gators arrived at the Baker estate to film its abandoned guest house. Producer Andre Stickland and presenter Peter Walken, who explored haunted houses for the show, were found and kidnapped by Jack, and both were killed. Their camera operator, Clancy Jarvis, was locked in the processing area beneath the main house for the night. He became the hero of the Banned Footage downloadable packs, and he also appears on VHS tapes in the main game.

Volume 1 arrived on the 31st of January 2017 for $9.99. In Nightmare, Clancy must hold out in the processing area until dawn against Jack and hordes of Molded. In Bedroom, Marguerite locks him in the master bedroom and serves him mold-infected cooking, hoping to turn him into one of the family. He escapes by stabbing her in the neck and finding a hidden tunnel under the bed. Volume 1 also holds Ethan Must Die, an extremely hard mode in which the player must defeat Marguerite in the greenhouse using randomized weapons and items.

Volume 2 followed on the 14th of February 2017 for $14.99. In 21, Lucas straps Clancy and a hooded man he calls Hoffman into a series of rigged games. The first is blackjack, where the loser has fingers sliced off by guillotines. Later rounds add electric shocks and a buzzsaw that creeps toward the loser. The Japanese version uses a bomb instead of the buzzsaw. Clancy wins every round. Hoffman, who turns out to be unconscious, wakes just as the buzzsaw kills him. Lucas is so impressed that he takes Clancy off to play another game, and a tape in the main game confirms that Clancy died in one of the barn traps.

Daughters, also in Volume 2, is a prequel set on the 10th of October 2014. A tropical cyclone has sent the tanker SS Annabelle missing off the Louisiana coast, and Jack carries in an unconscious girl named Eveline. Playing as Zoe, the player watches the household unravel as Marguerite turns violent and Jack stabs himself. Zoe finally wakes at the dining table with everything seemingly normal, and then begins seeing visions of Eveline. Volume 2 also includes Jack's 55th Birthday, a joke mode where the player searches the house for food to feed Jack as fast as possible.

On the 14th of December 2017, two post-game episodes arrived. Not a Hero, delayed from a planned release in the second quarter of 2017, follows Chris Redfield as he joins Blue Umbrella, the reformed Umbrella Corporation. Their aim is to catch Lucas and uncover evidence about The Connections, the group that created Eveline. Chris walks into a trap that attaches a bomb to his left wrist, and he must freeze it with liquid nitrogen to remove it. In a secret research lab, he finds that Lucas has killed the researchers. Chris shoots him, then defeats the mutation that follows. The outside studio HexaDrive handled development of Not a Hero.

End of Zoe cost $14.99 and was developed by Capcom. It picks up after the ending where Ethan cures Mia. Joe Baker, Zoe's uncle, lives in the swamps and has not been touched by the mold. He tries to save Zoe from a calcified state that Eveline inflicted as punishment, while a seemingly immortal Molded called the Swamp Man hunts them. The Swamp Man is revealed to be Jack, who survived Ethan's injection. Joe finally kills him for good, cures Zoe, and is joined by Umbrella reinforcements including Chris. Zoe then takes a phone call from Ethan and thanks him for keeping his promise to send help.

  • Resident Evil 7 Teaser: Beginning Hour appeared on the PlayStation Store shortly after the game's reveal. Its unnamed male player character had to escape a dilapidated house, and depending on the player's actions the teaser could end three different ways. Capcom later explained that it was a standalone experience rather than a piece of the game. By July 2016 it had been downloaded over 2 million times. An update called the Twilight Version arrived on the 15th of September 2016 with new rooms and items. The Midnight Version followed on the 3rd of December with more areas and a puzzle tied to a riddle in the earlier update. The demo reached Xbox One on the 9th of December and PC on the 19th of December.

At Gamescom 2016, attendees could play a demo called Lantern, shown with the first story trailer. Using found footage and a first-person view, it tells of a young woman named Mia hiding from an agitated old lady holding a lantern. The old lady is Marguerite Baker, a name first mentioned in Beginning Hour.

In October 2016, Capcom launched a ten-part video series called The World of Resident Evil 7, which teased pieces of the game. Capcom's marketing team worked with the creative agency iam8bit on the Resident Evil Escape Room Experience in Echo Park, Los Angeles. Groups of six were guided through a series of rooms by employees of the Umbrella Corporation. London hosted a similar event to coincide with the release.

The GameStop-exclusive Collector's Edition leaned into the same spirit. It included an eight-inch model of the Baker mansion that doubles as a music box, a 4 gigabyte USB flash drive shaped like a mannequin finger and packed in a VHS tape box, a SteelBook case, a lithograph of the Baker family, and a note. The UK version swapped in a seven-inch replica of the mansion without the music box, plus a 20th anniversary artbook. A 4D candle with the scent of the Baker House Mansion was also made to enhance the virtual reality experience.

The tune inside that music box is the game's theme song, an arranged version of the traditional American folk song "Go Tell Aunt Rhody". Michael A. Levine wrote the arrangement, and Jordan Reyne performed it. Levine's step-daughter Mariana Barreto was the original choice for the vocals, but she ended up singing background. The song went through about 20 versions before it was finished. The score came from Capcom's lead composer Akiyuki Morimoto, Miwako Chinone, and Satoshi Hori, with additional work by Cris Velasco and Brian D'Oliveira. Sumthing Else Music Works released the soundtrack digitally on the 24th of January, the day the game went on sale in North America.

  • Polygon's Philip Kollar delivered one of the sharpest endorsements, writing that "no Resident Evil game since the first has done as good a job as RE7 at making me feel scared and helpless". The wider response agreed. Metacritic's aggregate described the reviews as "generally favorable". Critics praised the new RE Engine, the gameplay, the puzzles, the atmosphere, and the virtual reality option.

Zack Furniss of Destructoid called the pacing "masterful" and likened the mix of horror and comedy to The Evil Dead films. He found the boss fights "harrowing" and described playing with PlayStation VR as an "intuitive" experience. Ray Carsillo of EGMNow valued the constant anxiety of the atmosphere and the slow narrative build. He said VR was "even more frightening than doing it normally". Scott Butterworth of GameSpot liked that the game relied on atmosphere rather than jump scares. He called the VHS tapes a device that served "beautifully as both a narrative device and a way to break up Ethan's exhausting mission".

Chloi Rad of IGN called the plantation "one of the creepiest single settings since the Spencer Mansion". Leon Hurley of GamesRadar+ enjoyed investigating the "beautifully designed" Baker house. Andy Kelly of PC Gamer opened his review by calling the game "a return to the atmospheric, slow-burning horror of the original". He disagreed with Giant Bomb's Dan Ryckert, who thought the first-person view was "bold". Kelly judged it "classic Resident Evil through and through".

Criticism was just as specific. Furniss found the final boss fight and ending disappointing. Carsillo disliked an inventory that gave weapons the same space as items critical to the story. Andrew Reiner of Game Informer faulted the thin development of Ethan Winters. Seated VR mode drew complaints about stomach-churning body movements. Butterworth felt excitement fade because of repeated tasks, and he noticed weaker visuals on Xbox One. Hurley questioned the late choice between Mia and Zoe, arguing that a player who regretted it could quickly undo it. Rad objected to "overplayed tropes about rural America". Kollar said the boss battles interrupted the suspense.

Months before release, the first-person view had invited comparisons to Konami's cancelled Silent Hills and its P.T. demo. Capcom replied that Resident Evil 7 had been in development long before P.T. appeared, and it denied rumors that P.T. staff had been hired. Shacknews noted that Beginning Hour resembled Sweet Home from 1989, the Capcom horror game that inspired the original Resident Evil of 1996. Both involve a film crew, an abandoned house, a female presence, and a tragedy about a family. Eurogamer found Lantern reminiscent of Alien: Isolation.

At the PlayStation Awards, the game won the Gold Prize, the User's Choice Prize, and the PlayStation VR Special Award. Destructoid named it Best VR Game in its 2017 awards, and Game Informer gave it Best VR Action. Whether sales matched the praise was a separate question for Capcom's investors.

  • Capcom had hoped to sell 4 million units by the end of March 2017, and the first numbers disappointed. Days after launch the game had shipped over 2.5 million units, a modest figure that helped drive Capcom's stock price down by more than three percent in Tokyo. Even so, the game topped the UK chart in its release week, according to Chart-Track, for the third-best debut in Resident Evil history. About 200,000 units sold on Steam in that window. In Japan the PlayStation 4 version sold 187,306 units, or 58.9 percent of its initial shipment, to lead the charts for the week ending the 29th of January. It also sold more than any other video game in the United States in January.

On the 1st of February, Capcom told investors the game had recouped its budget. By April 2017 it had sold 3.5 million units, short of the 4 million expectation. In May, Capcom set a lifetime forecast of ten million units, citing favorable reviews, marketing, and downloadable add-ons. Sales then climbed steadily, from 5.7 million by September 2018 to 9 million by March 2021 and 11 million by June 2022. As of the 30th of June 2025 the total stood at 15.4 million units, making it the second best-selling game in the franchise. By May 2026 it had reached 17.40 million copies. The free demo had passed 7.15 million downloads.

The game also traveled across platforms. On Windows and Xbox One, a purchase from the Windows Store or digital Xbox store worked on both through the Xbox Play Anywhere program. It was the first game from a third-party publisher to join that program. The Windows version used Denuvo anti-piracy protection, which was hacked within five days of release. For the first 12 months, the virtual reality format was exclusive to PlayStation VR. A Nintendo Switch cloud version, Biohazard 7: Resident Evil Cloud Version, launched in Japan on the 24th of May 2018. Players could try the first 15 minutes free and then buy a pass for 180 days of play. It reached the rest of the world on the 16th of December 2022.

Versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S were announced on the 2nd of March 2022 and released digitally on the 13th of June 2022. They added ray-tracing and high-framerate modes, and the PlayStation 5 version supported haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Owners of the earlier versions could upgrade for free. Versions for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS arrived on the 2nd of July 2024, including support for the iPhone 15 Pro. A Nintendo Switch 2 version followed on the 27th of February 2026, released alongside Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil Requiem.

Resident Evil Village, first revealed at the PlayStation 5 reveal event, was released on the 7th of May 2021. It is set a few years after the events of Resident Evil 7, keeps the first-person view, and follows Ethan Winters once more.
