Resident Evil Village
Resident Evil Village is a 2021 survival horror game from Capcom, and its launch came with a drawing visible from far away. On the 7th of May 2021, Capcom marked the release with a chalk Lycan on a hillside in Somerset. The figure stood 58 meters high and ran over 100 meters long. Lycans are the werewolf-like mutants that prowl the game's snowy European village. Players take the role of Ethan Winters, a father hunting through that village for his kidnapped daughter. The story raises sharp questions. Why did Capcom want a horror series to feel like a theme park? Who rules the village, and what do they want with a child? Why did critics who admired the game still argue over whether it was frightening enough?
Capcom told its Resident Evil team to start work on the 8th of August 2016, according to director Morimasa Sato. Resident Evil 7 was then still about half a year from release, so nobody knew whether its approach would pay off. The team kept its first plans close to the survival horror roots of Resident Evil 4, which the seventh game had revisited. From that earlier game came the idea of a village as the central location. Sato summed up the plan this way: "we're bringing the essence of Resident Evil 4, while Resident Evil 7 functions as the base for the game."
Resident Evil 7 arrived in January 2017 to a warm reception from critics and players. That success persuaded the team to make a direct sequel, with Ethan Winters again at the center and the same style of play. Producer Tsuyoshi Kanda said this also let them finish Ethan's story, which the earlier game had left open. The developers had grown attached to him and worked out his arc with other Resident Evil teams inside Capcom. Kanda also reflected on horror itself. In his view it is never black and white, and a trick that worked once should become a variation for a wider audience rather than a copy.
Sato wanted the village to feel like "a horror movie that you can play." Kanda said the village could hold many styles of horror, as its counterpart in Resident Evil 4 had, and Capcom came to call it "a theme park of horror." Earlier games in the series were mostly linear, but this one is more open, with optional and secret areas that reward exploring. The main story still runs in a fixed order that the team judged best. The fear also changed shape. The Baker mansion in Resident Evil 7 was claustrophobic, while the village frightens through uncertainty about what hides in open space. Quiet moments such as save points ease the tension curve.
On a research trip to Europe, Sato said, the team met an unseasonable cold snap that buried the scenery in snow. That inspired snowscapes used as gameplay elements as well as visuals. Capcom counts the game as the eighth main entry, and its logo includes the Roman numeral VIII. Even so, the producers styled the title to stress the word Village. In a Famitsu interview, Kanda and producer Peter Fabiano said they regarded the village as a character. The COVID-19 pandemic in Japan hampered the work, at one point halting development for a month. The game was announced in June 2020 at the PlayStation 5 reveal event, after roughly three and a half years of development.
Art director Tomonori Takano said Resident Evil 4 inspired the wish for memorable characters to populate the village. As with the seventh game, the team wanted fear to come from distinctive people and situations rather than from zombies alone. Capcom first considered filling the castle and village with hundreds of witches but found the idea hard to picture. The team switched to vampires for Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters, while avoiding the familiar vampire clichés. Castle Dimitrescu drew on Peleș Castle in Romania. Lady Dimitrescu grew popular before launch and featured heavily in promotional material and merchandise.
Three other houses borrowed classic gothic ideas: simulacra for Karl Heisenberg, mermen for Salvatore Moreau and ghosts for Donna Beneviento. Heisenberg is an engineer whose flamboyant wardrobe comes from 1960s men's fashion. His territory lacks the snow of the others, likely because it sits at a lower altitude. The team conceived Moreau as "the most repulsive character on Earth," and his domain grew from a frozen lake glimpsed on a research trip in Eastern Europe. House Beneviento extended ideas from Resident Evil 7. Sato noted that his American colleagues rank the fully veiled Donna Beneviento and her puppet Angie as the scariest of the four lords. The team had designed Angie for instant impact rather than pure fright.
Crows were the main motif for Mother Miranda, Takano said, and they run through the village as a wider design theme. The Lycans got a different brief. Sato explained they were meant to be an enemy that represents the village itself, a twisted outcome of a human being. The werewolf imagery let the team tap into a gothic horror look.
Trailers showed Chris Redfield in a sinister light, because he kills Mia and kidnaps Rose. Longtime fans, who knew him as a hero across several earlier games, were surprised. Kanda called it "a much darker, more sinister role." Capcom saw a chance to show the character's progression to people already familiar with him. Why Chris acts this way is the central mystery, and the answer waits deep beneath the village.
The story unfolds largely on the 9th of February 2021, with Ethan Winters living in Europe with his wife Mia and their baby daughter Rose. Chris Redfield had relocated the family there to start a new life, after Ethan defeated the bioweapon Eveline in Resident Evil 7. One night Chris and his Hound Wolf Squad raid the house, shoot Mia dead and take Ethan and Rose away. A mysterious entity crashes their transport near a village, and Ethan wakes beside the wreck to find Rose gone. Lycans terrorize the village, and four lords answer to a priestess called Mother Miranda. They are Alcina Dimitrescu, Donna Beneviento, Salvatore Moreau and Karl Heisenberg.
Heisenberg captures Ethan and brings him before Miranda, but Ethan escapes a death trap and enters Dimitrescu's castle. A mysterious merchant called the Duke helps him. After Ethan kills Dimitrescu and her daughters, he finds a flask holding Rose's head. The Duke explains that Miranda split Rose's body among four flasks for a ritual, and that Rose can be restored if Ethan collects the rest from the other lords. Ethan then kills Beneviento and Moreau, passes a test from Heisenberg and is invited to his factory. There Heisenberg proposes an alliance against Miranda, but Ethan refuses once he learns Heisenberg wants to weaponize Rose.
In the factory, Ethan confronts Chris over Mia's death and hears that "Mia" was Miranda in disguise. Miranda can mimic others, and she crashed the truck to seize Rose. After Ethan kills a mutated Heisenberg using a makeshift armored tank, Miranda appears, mocks him and rips out his heart. Chris then descends into a cave beneath the village and finds the Megamycete, the source of the mold. He plants a bomb there and discovers Miranda's laboratory. She has lived a century since touching the fungus, and she once mentored Oswell E. Spencer, founder of the Umbrella Corporation. Spencer used her knowledge to develop the T-Virus.
Miranda had been experimenting to revive her daughter Eva, who died of the Spanish flu a century earlier. The four lords, the Lycans and Eveline were all failed experiments, but Rose is a suitable host because of abilities inherited from her parents. Ethan, meanwhile, revives in limbo, where Eveline tells him he died in his first clash with Jack Baker in Dulvey. Her mold brought him back and gave him regenerative powers. At the ritual site, Miranda's attempt to revive Eva revives Rose instead. Ethan kills her, then sacrifices himself to detonate Chris's bomb while Chris carries Mia and Rose to safety. Years later, a teenaged Rose visits Ethan's grave before driving off on a mission, and an unknown figure approaches her vehicle.
At the Capcom Showcase in June 2022, the company revealed the Winters' Expansion, which centers on Rosemary "Rose" Winters. It launched on the 28th of October 2022 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. The Nintendo Switch cloud version followed on the 2nd of December 2022, and the macOS version on the 13th of January 2023. The package also added a third-person camera for the main story. It gave the Mercenaries mode two new stages, with Chris Redfield, Lady Dimitrescu and Karl Heisenberg as extra playable characters.
In the story expansion, Rose is sixteen and has been separated from Mia while under Chris's protection. She is a social outcast and resents the powers she gained from the Megamycete. Canine, a member of the Hound Wolf Squad, tells her a Purifying Crystal inside the Megamycete can remove those abilities. Miranda's research on how to reach it is stored in a sea of consciousnesses within a salvaged fragment. Rose sends her mind inside and lands in a realm resembling Dimitrescu's castle, covered in spewing mold. A masked version of the Duke leads monsters that hunt clones of her. A guiding spirit appears, and she names him Michael.
Michael urges Rose to leave, but she presses on. She falls to a deeper layer shaped like Beneviento's house, where she relives years of bullying by schoolmates. The realm's leader tells her that her father is to blame for her unwanted powers. To comfort her, Michael shows a replica of her baby home, where she finds a letter from her father promising his love. Then the realm's creator drags her back. She is Eveline, who wants Rose dead out of jealousy over being a failed and unloved experiment.
The third layer resembles the village where Rose was kidnapped, and there she finds the Purifying Crystal and uses it to drain her powers. Miranda's consciousness then appears and reveals that Canine was an illusion meant to lure Rose in. Powerless, Rose is now an easy vessel for reviving Eva. Michael is revealed as Ethan's consciousness inside the Megamycete, and he fights Miranda while urging Rose to flee. Hearing his cries, Rose breaks the crystal, regains her powers and defeats Miranda. Her father apologizes for being absent during her upbringing and tells her he is proud of her. The post-credits scene from the main game then plays out.
The setting is described as "pulled straight from the Victorian era," a snowy village far larger than the settings of its predecessor. Players see it in first person, and buildings in the central village can be climbed and used in fights. Ethan has military training, so he carries more combat skill than in the seventh game. Lycans are agile and intelligent, wield weapons and attack in packs. Each encounter forces a choice among spending scarce ammunition, fighting hand to hand or running. As in Resident Evil 4 from 2005, makeshift barricades can hold enemies back.
The Duke runs a shop where players buy supplies, weapons and upgrades, and sell the treasures they find around the village. Players can also hunt animals, which the Duke cooks into dishes. Eating certain side dishes grants perks, such as taking less damage while blocking. Inventory management also echoes Resident Evil 4, with a briefcase in which items can be moved and rotated to save space. Typewriters let players save manually, replacing the tape recorders of Resident Evil 7, and mark the first mainline return of typewriters since Resident Evil 4. A pause-menu map and a sketch-filled diary recap progress. Photo mode and a button to skip cutscenes are additions.
Near the end, Chris Redfield becomes playable and the game briefly turns into a more action-heavy stretch, owing to his veteran experience against bioweapons. Andy Kelly of PC Gamer saw it as a "cathartic moment for players who have been carefully conserving ammunition up until that point."
The Mercenaries Mode returns from earlier games as an arcade challenge of timed stages, where players buy items and upgrades at the Duke's Emporium. Buyers of the game also received Resident Evil Re:Verse, a six-player online third-person shooter developed by NeoBards Entertainment. It was meant to launch alongside the main game, but it slipped to summer 2021 and was delayed again. It went live on the 28th of October 2022. IGN criticized its balancing, thin offering of modes and aggressive monetization, and GamingBolt called it the worst Resident Evil game. Re:Verse was shut down on the 29th of June 2025.
Resident Evil Village runs on Capcom's own RE Engine and was built to span two console generations. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S had arrived six months earlier. After the announcement, Capcom would not commit to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions until it could ensure acceptable quality. Those editions were confirmed in January 2021. Producer Tsuyoshi Kanda said the game was designed for next-gen hardware and needed a lot of trial and error to deliver a comparable experience on older machines.
On PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, players can switch on ray tracing, which simulates how light travels for more realistic lighting and reflections. Ray traced global illumination adds warmer bounced light indoors and softer shadows. Reflections on polished floors are rendered at as little as one eighth of the main resolution. Older consoles rely on traditional screen-space methods. Outdoors, volumetric fog and lighting build atmosphere. Post-processing is lighter than the heavy film grain Resident Evil 7 used to evoke found-footage films, so the image looks cleaner.
On the newest consoles the game runs at 45 frames per second with ray tracing and 60 without. On PlayStation 5, loading screens shrink to a short dip to black, because its solid-state drive reads at over 5 GB/s. Xbox Series X/S reduces loading screens but does not erase them. A mode targeting 120 frames per second without ray tracing was later added for PlayStation 5 Pro. As an AMD-sponsored title, the game also includes FidelityFX Contrast Adaptive Sharpening to reduce blur, and FidelityFX Super Resolution upscaling arrived in a July 2021 update.
The 2022 macOS version for Apple silicon lacks ray tracing, and so does the 2023 iOS port, even though the iPhone 15 Pro's A17 Pro chip has hardware for it. Village was among the first games to adopt Apple's MetalFX upscaling, which keeps disocclusion artifacts low but struggles with aliasing and image stability. The iOS port also suffered shader compilation problems, because shaders were not precompiled at build time. A PlayStation VR2 mode arrived on the 22nd of February 2023 as free downloadable add-on. The Gold Edition reached Nintendo Switch 2 as a native port on the 27th of February 2026, after earlier cloud streaming on Switch.
In July 2021, players found the Windows version stuttering, and the cause was high processor overhead from Denuvo, an anti-piracy system. Richard Leadbetter of Digital Foundry noted tremendously high frame times and extraordinary stutter, worst during fights with the maidens and other enemies with certain animations. He blamed Denuvo combined with Capcom's own anti-tamper software. An independent cracker then released a pirated build with the protection stripped out, and Leadbetter confirmed it ran far better. A patch on the 20th of July 2021 changed how the game used Denuvo, and Leadbetter found it matched the pirated build. Denuvo was removed entirely in April 2023.
Maiden, the first of two demos, reached PlayStation 5 on the 21st of January 2021. On the 15th of April 2021 came an early access demo called Village for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. It gave 30 minutes in the village, playable once, and it stayed live for eight hours. A Castle demo for PlayStation early access followed on the 24th of April with the same limits. On the 30th of April 2021, a YouTube puppet show had the four lords insisting they are not scary. A multi-platform demo on the 1st of May 2021 offered 60 minutes across both areas for seven days. In Japan the game shipped in two versions to meet local regulations, a CERO Z edition for ages 18 and up and a less violent CERO D edition for ages 17 and up.
Metacritic summarized the reviews as generally favorable. Phil Hornshaw of GameSpot said Resident Evil 7 leaned toward a dark and creepy haunted house, while Village took cues from the "faster, panickier" Resident Evil 4. He praised the balance of action and scares. Leon Hurley disagreed, lamenting that it was one of the "not a horror game" Resident Evils. Tristan Ogilvie of IGN liked how it joined Resident Evil 4's action with Resident Evil 7's modern design. The final chapters split them. Ogilvie enjoyed their "chaotic levels of carnage," while Hornshaw and Hurley found them too action-heavy.
Variety drew praise. Hornshaw called each area "fun, intense, and, naturally, frightening in its own way," and Hurley found the first half "full of atmosphere and intrigue." Critics also liked the open exploration and the merchant. Puzzles and bosses took the criticism. Hurley rated the puzzles "consistently low," and Ogilvie said solutions were either "exceedingly straightforward" or spoiled by notes nearby. Hornshaw found the movement "a little slow and clunky" for boss battles. Ogilvie called the Mercenaries mode "addictive."
Shortly after release, film director Richard Raaphorst accused Capcom of plagiarism, citing close similarities between a monster in his film Frankenstein's Army and the Sturm creature in the game.
Village shipped over three million units in its first four days, tying Resident Evil 2 from 2019 as the third-fastest seller in the series. Capcom said the series had then sold 100 million units since its 1996 debut. In Japan, Famitsu reported the PlayStation 4 version in first place, selling 111,171 units in a week. The game topped sales in both the United States and the United Kingdom in May 2021 and ranked eighth in the United States for the year. Sales passed 10.5 million units by November 2024 and reached 14.93 million by May 2026. The Golden Joystick Awards named it Game of the Year, and Maggie Robertson's performance appears among categories at several ceremonies. A sequel, Resident Evil Requiem, followed on the 27th of February 2026.
