MGK
MGK, born Colson Baker and known for years as Machine Gun Kelly, took his original stage name from a gangster. The nickname belonged to George Kelly Barnes, a criminal of the Prohibition era. The man who borrowed it became a rapper, singer, songwriter, producer and actor. He later shortened the name to three letters, stylized in all lowercase. His career has been a string of hard turns, from hip-hop mixtapes to pop-punk guitars, and from film sets to public feuds. How does a boy raised across several countries find his way into rap? What pushed him to trade hip-hop for guitars? And why did one crude message online about a famous rival's daughter keep echoing for years?
Colson Baker was born on the 22nd of April 1990 in Houston, Texas, but he spent his first four years in Egypt. His parents were both Christian missionaries, so the family kept moving around the world. In Egypt he learned to speak Arabic before he learned English. Later homes included Kenya and Germany, along with stretches in Texas, Los Angeles and Chicago.
When Baker was nine years old, his mother left home. He and his father moved to Denver to live with an aunt. His father fought depression and unemployment. Baker says he owned just two school outfits, and he endured bullying from children in the neighborhood.
In the sixth grade at Hamilton Middle School in Denver, Baker began listening to rap. The school had an ethnically diverse student body. Ludacris, Eminem and DMX were the first three rappers to pull him into hip-hop. His interest took hold after he heard DMX's song “We Right Here,” from the 2001 album The Great Depression. He spent his freshman year at Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver. While living in Cleveland, he attended Shaker Heights High School.
Baker later called DMX his idol and said the rapper's music helped him through the bullying. He also listened to the rock bands Guns N' Roses and Blink-182 during his youth. That second name would matter a great deal years later.
In March 2009, Baker was on the verge of being evicted. His father had kicked him out after high school. He traveled to Harlem's Apollo Theater and won there in consecutive rounds. That made him the first rapper ever to win at the Apollo.
Baker recorded in his home studio, which he called the “Rage Cage.” Exposure grew after MTV2's Sucker Free Freestyle, where he freestyled numerous verses from his single “Chip off the Block.” In February 2010 he released the mixtape 100 Words and Running. On it, “Lace Up” began as a short interlude, then grew into a catchphrase that echoed through his later music. Despite his rising popularity, he still worked at Chipotle to afford rent.
His national debut came in May 2010 with the single “Alice in Wonderland,” released on iTunes with a music video through Block Starz Music. It earned him Best Midwest Artist at the 2010 Underground Music Awards. The video also won Best Music Video at the 2010 Ohio Hip-Hop Awards.
The mixtape Lace Up followed in November 2010, recorded in three months during a creative burst. It carried the hometown anthem “Cleveland,” which was played at Cleveland Cavaliers home games and went into rotation on Z107.9 in Cleveland. The magazine XXL featured him in 2011. He also appeared on Juicy J's track “Inhale,” whose video included Steve-O from the television series Jackass.
In March 2011, Baker played his first SXSW show, in Austin, Texas. There, Sean Combs offered him a recording contract with Bad Boy Records, an imprint of Interscope Records. When Bad Boy moved to Epic Records as its distributor in 2015, Baker stayed signed to Interscope in a joint venture with Bad Boy.
On the 14th of December 2011, MTV named Baker the Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2011. Two days later came “Invincible,” released on iTunes with co-writer and singer Ester Dean as the second single from his coming album. The song found an unusually wide range of uses. It played in a commercial for the HTC ReZound and became the official theme of WrestleMania XXVIII. WWE used it to highlight John Cena in his match, and Baker performed at the event before the main event between Cena and The Rock. The NFL Network also used “Invincible” as the theme for Thursday Night Football. At the next year's WrestleMania, WWE chose his song “All We Have” to highlight Cena again in his rematch with The Rock.
On the 18th of March 2012, Baker won the MTVu Breaking Woodie award. He then landed on the cover of XXL as part of its annual Top 10 Freshmen list. His classmates included Macklemore, French Montana, Hopsin, Danny Brown, Iggy Azalea, Roscoe Dash, Future, Don Trip and Kid Ink. On the 13th of August 2012, he self-released the mixtape EST 4 Life, which mixed old and recently recorded material.
His debut album, Lace Up, arrived on the 9th of October 2012. Guests included Bun B, Cassie, DMX, Ester Dean, Lil Jon, Tech N9ne, Twista, Waka Flocka Flame, Young Jeezy and Dub-O. It debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 57,000 copies. A drop to number 22 in week two brought the total to 65,000. By September 2015 it had sold 263,000 copies.
The lead single, “Wild Boy,” featuring Waka Flocka Flame, gave him his first Billboard Hot 100 entry, peaking at number 98. The Recording Industry Association of America certified it gold soon after, and it eventually reached triple platinum. His headlining Hostile Takeover Tour also dated from 2012.
On the 4th of June 2013, Baker posted a picture of a letter on his social media accounts. It dedicated his next project to love, which he wrote had been taken from him his entire life. He described losing his love for music, the one thing worth fighting for, and he ended on a vow. “I've found that love again. And I plan on never surrendering it.”
The project was the mixtape Black Flag. He had first announced a new mixtape in early 2012, with Pusha T and Meek Mill on a track called “Pe$o.” On the 18th of February 2013, he revealed the name Black Flag and its cover. He also released a video for “Champions,” which featured Diddy and sampled The Diplomats' “We Are the Champions.” Black Flag then arrived without warning on the 26th of June 2013. Guests included French Montana, Kellin Quinn, Dub-O, Sean McGee and Tezo.
In January 2014, Baker confirmed that he was in the early stages of a second album, aimed at 2015. On the 5th of January 2015, he released “Till I Die,” with a video on his VEVO account. A remix with Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, a hip-hop group from his hometown, followed on the 5th of June 2015. It featured French Montana, Yo Gotti and Ray Cash. In between, “A Little More,” with vocals from Victoria Monet, got its video on the 18th of May 2015.
In an MTV interview, Baker said friends back home had asked for something for the streets after his first album, which is why he made “Till I Die.” Looking back at that video, where characters end up in jail, shot, dead or branded a snitch, he found it sad. He wrote “A Little More” to show how he saw the world as a more mature person. He promised the album would be more lyrical and hip-hop, with more live instrumentation. On the 25th of June 2015, he named it General Admission, due in late September.
Critics praised both General Admission and its 2017 follow-up, Bloom, and both did well commercially. Bloom was supported by “Bad Things,” a joint single with Camila Cabello released in late 2016. It peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100. Baker was due to open the North American leg of Linkin Park's One More Light Tour until it was cancelled after frontman Chester Bennington died by suicide. Baker paid tribute with an acoustic cover of the Linkin Park song “Numb.” His headlining tours of this stretch were the No Class Tour in 2014, the Alpha Omega Tour in 2016 and the 27 World Tour in 2017.
The trouble began on the 7th of May 2012, when Baker tweeted a crude remark about Eminem's daughter Hailie. He was 22 and she was 16. In a WQHT interview on the 19th of October 2015, Baker alleged that the tweet led Eminem to blacklist him from a number of radio stations. In a freestyle for KPWR on the 16th of May 2017, he included a line about Eminem supposedly banning him from Shade 45.
On the 1st of March 2018, Baker rapped a verse on Tech N9ne's song “No Reason.” Eminem's “Not Alike,” from the album Kamikaze, arrived on the 31st of August 2018 and claimed that verse was about him. Baker answered on the 3rd of September with “Rap Devil,” a play on Eminem's own “Rap God.” The track accused Eminem of trying to sideline Baker's career after the 2012 comment. Baker said he was standing up for his generation as well as himself.
“Rap Devil” topped the iTunes chart on the 10th of September. On the 12th, Eminem explained his side in an interview with Sway Calloway on his YouTube channel. Two days later he released the diss track “Killshot.” Despite a mixed critical response, “Rap Devil” peaked at number 13 on the Hot 100. The EP Binge followed on the 21st of September 2018. It sold 21,519 units in its first week, debuted at number 24 on the Billboard 200 and drew largely unfavorable reviews.
Eminem kept returning to the subject. On the 17th of January 2020, his song “Unaccommodating” included a verse aimed at Baker. Baker's “Bullets with Names,” released on the 17th of March 2020 with Young Thug, RJMrLA and Lil Duke, aimed its chorus at Eminem. Eminem's “Gnat,” released on the 18th of December 2020, took a shot at Baker in its chorus. Dr. Dre's “Gospel,” featuring Eminem, did the same on the 15th of December 2021.
In January 2022, fans speculated that the feud would reignite when a TikTok user resurfaced a 2013 interview with Fuse.tv. In it, a 23-year-old Baker said he had a crush on an underage Kendall Jenner and would not wait until she turned 18. Commenters pointed again to his past remarks about Hailie. Baker tweeted a quote from Eminem's “The Way I Am,” which fed the speculation. Eminem declined to comment on either situation.
The feud with G-Eazy became tangled up with Eminem's. It began after G-Eazy's relationship with Halsey ended and photographs of Baker with Halsey surfaced. On the 18th of July 2018, G-Eazy revealed that he had bleached his hair blond, and Baker alleged on Twitter that he was trying to look like him. G-Eazy released the diss track “Bad Boy” on the 30th of August 2018. Baker replied the next day with a freestyle for Hot 97.
In “Killshot,” Eminem defended G-Eazy. The two ended their feud in April 2019, through what NME described as an “intervention by Eminem.” In October 2019, G-Eazy said that Kid Cudi had squashed it. Baker's next public argument would come from the rock world in 2021.
In April 2019, Billboard reported that Baker's next album would be called Hotel Diablo. Its third single, “I Think I'm Okay,” arrived on the 7th of June 2019 with Yungblud and Travis Barker, and it was a pop-punk song. The album followed on the 5th of July 2019 and debuted at number five on the Billboard 200, his fourth top-ten album. It experimented with rap rock and drew better reviews than his recent work.
On the 18th of December 2019, Baker released another pop-punk single, “Why Are You Here.” He soon began teasing a project produced by Barker. He said the whole album would be pop-punk, inspired by his two earlier releases in that style. Barker, the drummer of Blink-182, produced every track. He has also played drums in Baker's backing band since 2019.
On the 14th of January 2020, Baker announced the title Tickets to My Downfall, due on the 25th of September 2020. Singles included “Bloody Valentine” on the 1st of May and “My Ex's Best Friend,” with blackbear, on the 7th of August. The second reached the top 20 of the Hot 100. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, Baker released daily recordings, covers and collaborations as the #LockdownSessions series. They included Paramore's “Misery Business” with Barker, Oasis's “Champagne Supernova” with Yungblud and a remix of PVRIS's “My House.” Some later appeared on special editions of the album.
Tickets to My Downfall dropped any semblance of hip-hop. It debuted atop the Billboard 200 and became the only rock album to do so that year.
In August 2020, Baker opened a coffee house called 27 Club Coffee in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. In October 2020, four episodes of Halloween in Hell were released. It was a fictionalised musical horror podcast that Baker created and starred in, alongside Iann Dior, 24kGoldn, Dana Dentata, Phem and Tommy Lee. Jared Gutstadt wrote and composed its soundtrack album.
On the 22nd of November 2020, after performing at the AMAs, Baker announced that the album would become a “first of its kind musical film experience.” Downfalls High reached Facebook on the 15th of January 2021 and YouTube three days later. Baker and Mod Sun directed it, and Baker and Barker narrated. Chase Hudson and Sydney Sweeney played teenage lovers in what Baker called a pop-punk take on Grease. Iann Dior, Phem, Jxdn and Trippie Redd made appearances.
On the 9th of August 2021, Baker announced Born with Horns, another collaboration with Barker. On the 31st of January 2022, he renamed it Mainstream Sellout. It matched the commercial success of its predecessor, although critical reception was mixed. On the 5th of February 2022, he performed at the NHL All-Star Game halftime show in Las Vegas.
Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor had already weighed in. In a 2021 interview he said he hated most new rock, particularly “the artists who failed in one genre and decided to go rock.” At Riot Fest in September 2021, Baker and Slipknot played at the same time on different stages. Baker opened his set by asking the crew to light the crowd so he could “see who chose to be here instead of with all the old weird dudes with masks.” He later said on Twitter that Taylor was meant to appear on “Can't Look Back,” for the deluxe edition of Tickets to My Downfall. According to Baker, he rejected the verse and accused Taylor of being bitter.
In a January 2022 fan Q&A, Taylor claimed Baker had started it and mocked his change in musical direction. In July 2022, Baker said in his Life in Pink documentary that he regretted the feud and wished both men had avoided acting “ridiculous.” In 2023, Taylor also expressed remorse and said of the pair, “We are big-mouth singers.”
On the 23rd of March 2024, Baker and fellow Ohio rapper Trippie Redd announced the collaborative EP Genre: Sadboy, due on the 29th of March. They played free shows at Irving Plaza in New York City on the 2nd of April and at the Bluestone in Columbus, Ohio, on the 4th of April. On the 6th of May 2025, he released a freestyle over NSYNC's “Bye Bye Bye” and teased a pop single. The single “Cliché” arrived on the 23rd of May. On the 10th of June, he named the album Lost Americana, due on the 8th of August. Bob Dylan, one of his idols, narrated the trailer.
Baker's first film role came in the 2014 romantic drama Beyond the Lights, where he played Kid Culprit, a rapper described as “shallow, self-important.” In 2016 he co-starred in The Land, a Cleveland-set drama produced by Nas, and served as a co-executive producer. That year he also had a minor part in the techno-thriller Nerve, alongside Emma Roberts and Dave Franco. He also had a recurring role as Wes, a former Pearl Jam roadie, on the Showtime series Roadies.
He played Felix in the 2018 Netflix horror thriller Bird Box with Sandra Bullock. In 2019 he portrayed drummer Tommy Lee in The Dirt, a Netflix biographical comedy-drama about Mötley Crüe. Project Power, in 2020, put him opposite Jamie Foxx as Newt. In 2021 he co-starred with Bruce Willis and Megan Fox in the crime thriller Midnight in the Switchgrass. He also starred with Sam Worthington in the western The Last Son. That year he began using his birth name in film credits, after earlier credits as Machine Gun Kelly.
In 2022, he and Mod Sun made their directorial debuts with Good Mourning, a stoner comedy they also wrote and produced. Baker played London Clash, and the cast included Dove Cameron, Megan Fox and Becky G. He also made cameo appearances in Jackass Forever and on Hot Ones, and he sat front row at SummerSlam in 2024 with Logan Paul.
In his teens, Baker was in a relationship with Emma Cannon, and their daughter Casie was born in July 2009. He is open about smoking cannabis daily and has called it a “source of happiness.” Before Lace Up came out, he was addicted to heroin. He also used cocaine and alcohol heavily until 2020, when he revealed an Adderall addiction and said he was seeking treatment.
In a 2012 interview, Baker said he identifies politically as an anarchist. Asked in 2022 whether he planned to vote in the midterms, he answered, “I have anarchy tattooed on my stomach. I'm not a political person.”
In May 2020, he began a relationship with Megan Fox after they met while filming Midnight in the Switchgrass. On the 12th of January 2022, Fox announced their engagement. In March 2024, she revealed they had called it off. In November 2024, Fox said on Instagram that she was pregnant with his child, after an earlier miscarriage in their relationship. Their daughter was born on the 27th of March 2025.
On the 16th of October 2025, it was announced that he would perform at halftime of the Canadian Football League's 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His Lost Americana Tour is listed for 2025-26.
