  • Sydney Sweeney is an American actress who once handed her parents a five-year business plan. The plan had one purpose: to win their permission for her to act. That detail says a lot about how she works. She treats a career as something to organize, fund and steer, not something to wait for. Her story raises a few questions. How does a performer move from bit parts to headlining films that she also produces? What happens when a young star becomes famous enough that strangers argue about her instead of her acting? And what kind of actress comes out of a start like this one?

  • Sydney Bernice Sweeney was born on the 12th of September 1997 in Spokane, Washington. Her mother is a former criminal defense lawyer, and her father works in the hospitality industry. She has a brother named Trent, who joined the Air Force in 2020. The family lives in a rural lakeside home in the Idaho panhandle, along the Washington border. Five generations of her family have lived there. Sweeney has said that her family is religious.

Her childhood was physical. She has said she played many sports. One wakeboarding accident left a cut next to her eye, and it took 19 stitches to close. She attended Saint George's School in Spokane. Around the fourth grade, her love of math led her to a club called Math is Cool and to the school's robotics team.

Acting arrived through an audition for an extra in an independent film shooting near Spokane. After she presented her plan, she began auditioning and booking commercial jobs in Seattle and in Portland, Oregon, where the family lived for a time. When she was 13, the family moved to Los Angeles. She attended Brighton Hall School in Burbank, California, and graduated as valedictorian of her class. In 2016 she briefly worked at Universal Studios Hollywood, then left once an acting job came through. Her screen career had actually begun years earlier.

  • Sweeney first appeared on television in 2009, in a bit part in an episode of Heroes. Her first film role came in 2010, in the horror comedy ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction. Supporting parts followed in shows such as 90210, Criminal Minds, Grey's Anatomy and Pretty Little Liars.

The year 2018 raised the stakes. She starred as Emaline Addario in the Netflix series Everything Sucks!, which followed two groups of high school students in Oregon in 1996. During the same period she played Alice in the HBO miniseries Sharp Objects. Alice is a roommate whom Amy Adams's character meets at a psychiatric facility. The part began small, but the director kept bringing her back for more scenes.

To prepare, Sweeney studied stories of girls who live with mental illness and self-harm. She also visited hospitals with patients who self-harmed. The schedule was demanding. She shot Everything Sucks! during the week and Sharp Objects on weekends.

That same year she appeared in the film Under the Silver Lake. She also took a recurring role in the second season of The Handmaid's Tale, as Eden Spencer, a pious and obedient girl in the totalitarian Republic of Gilead. She led the horror film Along Came the Devil as well. In 2019 came Clementine, Big Time Adolescence and Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. A new HBO role that June would soon overshadow all of them.

  • In June 2019, Sweeney took the part of Cassie Howard in the HBO drama Euphoria. Cassie is a teenager with a reputation for promiscuity. The series was a breakout success and became the second most watched HBO series. Her work earned a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2022. Variety wrote that her performance "proves that Sweeney's one hell of a shapeshifter between her deft turns in this, The Handmaid's Tale, Everything Sucks and Sharp Objects." Her many nude scenes drew heavy attention and prompted debate about nudity in film and the male gaze.

In 2021, Sweeney joined the first season of Mike White's anthology series The White Lotus as a sardonic college sophomore. That role brought a second Emmy nomination in 2022, this time for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. The same year, she appeared on the Time 100 Next list. In 2023, at age 25, she was chosen for the celebrity category of the Forbes 30 Under 30.

Then came a stark change of register. In 2023 she played U.S. Air Force veteran Reality Winner in Tina Satter's thriller drama Reality. It premiered in February at the 73rd Berlin Film Festival. Steph Green of IndieWire called the film "inventively mounted and extraordinarily tense" and said Sweeney was "the real deal". Jessica Kiang of Variety wrote that she played Winner "so convincingly that it's hard to remember her as the sardonic, pampered teen in The White Lotus, or the nice-girl-turned-nasty in Euphoria". Her next big step that year would put her behind the camera as well.

  • In 2020, Sweeney founded a production company called Fifty-Fifty Films. That year she also starred in the television film Nocturne. She appeared as Persephone in a live-action advertisement for the online comic Lore Olympus, made by Webtoon.

Her producing instincts paid off most visibly with Anyone but You. She and Glen Powell starred in the romantic comedy, which premiered in December 2023. Sweeney was also an executive producer. She was instrumental in hiring both Powell and the director, Will Gluck, and she contributed to the script. The film became a sleeper hit and grossed over $220 million worldwide.

Immaculate shows a longer game. Sweeney first auditioned for the project in 2014. Years later she bought the rights to the screenplay and hired her frequent collaborator Michael Mohan to direct. She produced the psychological horror film and starred in it. Sweeney has said she saw producing as a way to create opportunities for herself. Her 2024 slate also included a superhero film where she had no producing role at all.

  • Madame Web, released in February 2024, placed Sweeney in a supporting role within Sony's Spider-Man Universe. It received negative reviews and bombed at the box office. She said: "I was just hired as an actress in it, so I was just along for the ride for whatever was going to happen." Later in 2024 she co-starred in Eden, directed by Ron Howard. Chase Hutchinson of TheWrap wrote that she "runs away with the whole thing."

Americana had premiered at the South by Southwest Festival in March 2023. It reached just over 1,000 theaters in August 2025, and the media called it a flop. Deadline predicted that it would still turn a profit for an independent film. In June 2025, Sweeney starred beside Julianne Moore in Echo Valley, and she learned to ride horses for the part.

Christy had its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. Sweeney played the professional boxer Christy Martin and produced the biopic. She said she was inspired by Martin's strength and perseverance, and that the role required her to transform herself. Critic Owen Gleiberman called her work a "potent, true-note, game-changing knockout of a performance". Critics liked the film, yet it disappointed at the box office. Sweeney replied: "We don't always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. And Christy has been the most impactful project of my life."

In December 2025 she co-starred opposite Amanda Seyfried in The Housemaid, an adaptation of a bestselling novel. It succeeded at the box office, and a sequel is in development with Sweeney returning. In April 2026 she came back as Cassie for the third season of Euphoria.

  • The Rolling Stones cast Sweeney in the video for "Angry", a single from their 2023 album Hackney Diamonds. Some critics said the video objectified her. She defended it as "empowerment through embracing my body".

In March 2024 she hosted Saturday Night Live. Afterward, the conservative Canadian newspaper National Post ran an article asking whether her bust was a harbinger of the death of woke. The political scientist Richard Hanania tweeted "Wokeness is dead" alongside a clip centered on her chest. Sweeney described the fixation on her appearance as "this weird relationship that people have with me that I have no control over".

Brands have courted that attention. In January 2023 she became an ambassador for Armani Beauty and Laneige. Her other advertising deals include Miu Miu, Samsung, Baskin-Robbins, Cotton On and Guess. In May 2025 she partnered with the personal care brand Dr. Squatch on a limited-edition soap line containing her bathwater. In January 2026 she draped dozens of bras over the Hollywood sign to promote her Syrn lingerie brand.

The largest storm came in July 2025 with an American Eagle Outfitters campaign titled "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans". The Hollywood Reporter called the reaction a "media firestorm". Some social media users, and later some academics, argued that the pun on "jeans" and "genes" promoted eugenics and white supremacy. Supporters decried wokeness and cancel culture. The Trump administration commented, and eventually Donald Trump did too.

In August 2025, media analysts speaking to CNN said her public image had not suffered. American Eagle later praised the results. Sweeney first said she was unaffected and declined further comment. In December 2025 she clarified that she was "against hate". A second American Eagle campaign, "Syd for Short", was unveiled in April 2026.

  • Sweeney is a car enthusiast who has restored a 1969 Ford Bronco and a 1965 Ford Mustang. Her partnership with Ford also let her design a custom 2024 Mustang.

Her homes trace her rising income. In 2021 she bought a Tudor-style house of 3200 square feet in Los Angeles. In 2023 she bought what was described as a fixer-upper mansion in Bel Air. In 2024 she added a home in the Florida Keys.

She started dating the businessman Jonathan Davino in 2018, and they became engaged in 2022. They produced films together, including Anyone but You and Immaculate, and she called him her "producing partner". The couple separated in early 2025. In mid-2025 she began dating the businessman and music executive Scooter Braun.

The road ahead is already crowded. She is set to star in The Custom of the Country, written and directed by Josie Rourke. She will appear opposite Noah Centineo in Gundam, adapted from the Japanese science fiction anime. She will return as Millie in The Housemaid's Secret, directed by Paul Feig, with Kirsten Dunst co-starring. She is also attached to play Kim Novak in Scandalous, a romantic drama to be directed by Colman Domingo.
