Bruce Willis
Bruce Willis received the 2,321st star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on the 16th of October 2006. It sits at 6915 Hollywood Boulevard. At the reception, he told the crowd he used to come down and look at the stars. Then came the confession: "I could never quite figure out what you were supposed to do to get one." Time passed, and he finished by saying he was still excited to be an actor.
The man receiving that honor was Walter Bruce Willis, a retired American actor with more than one hundred films to his name. This documentary asks how someone who admitted being baffled by the honor ended up receiving it. It also asks what became of his career and his family once the cameras went quiet.
Idar-Oberstein, West Germany, is where Walter Bruce Willis was born on the 19th of March 1955. His mother, Marlene, came from Kassel. His father, David Willis, was an American soldier who lived from 1929 to 2009. After leaving the military in 1957, David moved the family to his hometown of Carneys Point, New Jersey. Bruce had a younger sister, Florence, and two younger brothers, Robert and David. Robert lived from 1959 to 2001.
Willis later described his family background as a "long line of blue-collar people". His mother worked in a bank. His father was a welder, a master mechanic and a factory worker.
Willis spoke with a stutter, and at Penns Grove High School his schoolmates nicknamed him "Buck-Buck". He joined the drama club and discovered that performing on stage eased the stutter. He was eventually elected student council president and graduated in 1973.
Jobs came before the stage. After graduation he worked as a security guard at the Salem Nuclear Power Plant. He also transported crew members at the DuPont Chambers Works factory in Deepwater. Later he worked as a private investigator, a job he would play on screen in both Moonlighting and The Last Boy Scout.
At Montclair State University, Willis enrolled in the drama program and was cast in a production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. He left the school in 1977 and moved to New York City. There he joined the NBC page program and worked for Saturday Night Live. In the early 1980s he paid his bills as a bartender at Manhattan nightspots including Kamikaze, Cafe Central and Chelsea Central, while living in Hell's Kitchen. He would soon compete against 3,000 other actors for a single television part.
Opposite Cybill Shepherd on the series Moonlighting, Willis played David Addison Jr. from 1985 to 1989. The role established him as a comedic actor. Across the show's five seasons, he won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He also won a Golden Globe for best television actor in a musical or comedy series.
Seagram, the beverage maker, hired him at the height of that success as pitchman for its Golden Wine Cooler products. The campaign paid him US$5-7 million over two years. Willis chose not to renew the contract when he decided to stop drinking alcohol in 1988.
Blind Date, released in 1987, gave Willis his first lead role in a film. Blake Edwards directed it, and Willis co-starred with Kim Basinger and John Larroquette. Edwards cast him again the following year as the real-life cowboy actor Tom Mix in Sunset.
In 1988, Die Hard cast Willis as John McClane. He performed most of his own stunts, and the film grossed $138,708,852 worldwide. Two other roles followed. In In Country he played Emmett Smith, a Vietnam veteran. He also voiced a talking baby in Look Who's Talking in 1989 and in its sequel, Look Who's Talking Too, in 1990.
Die Hard 2 arrived in 1990, and Die Hard with a Vengeance followed in 1995. The first three films earned more than US$700 million internationally and placed Willis in the first rank of Hollywood action stars. At one point, Die Hard 2 and Ghost, starring his then wife Demi Moore, held the number one and number two spots at the box office. No married Hollywood couple matched that feat again until 2024.
Willis returned as McClane in Live Free or Die Hard in 2007. A Good Day to Die Hard, released on the 14th of February 2013, was his fifth turn in the role. He spoke warmly about the series. He said, "it's just the sheer novelty of being able to play the same character over 25 years and still be asked back is fun." He added, "I try to improve my work every time."
Back in 1987, he had also released a record credited to a man who did not exist.
Bruno Radolini was a supposedly influential blues musician, and he never existed. He was the fictional alter ego credited on The Return of Bruno, Willis's pop-blues debut album, released by Motown on the 20th of January 1987. A mockumentary promoted the record and showed "Bruno" performing at famous events, including Woodstock. The album earned a gold certification from the American recording industry.
The hit single "Respect Yourself" featured the Pointer Sisters as guest vocalists. For a second single, Willis recorded a version of the Drifters song "Under the Boardwalk". It reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart but was less successful in the United States.
A second album, If It Don't Kill You, It Just Makes You Stronger, came out on the 3rd of October 1989, also on Motown. Willis enjoyed moderate success as a recording artist in those years, and he returned to the studio several times afterward.
Guest spots filled the later decades. The 1991 soundtrack to Hudson Hawk included two duets with Danny Aiello, "Swinging on a Star" and "Side by Side". In 2003, the Rugrats Go Wild soundtrack paired him with Chrissie Hynde on "Big Bad Cat". In 2008 he gave a spoken-word performance over a blues rock jam on the Blues Traveler album North Hollywood Shootout. The track was titled "Free Willis (Ruminations from Behind Uncle Bob's Machine Shop)".
Music even cost him a part. He was originally cast as Terry Benedict in Ocean's Eleven in 2001 but dropped out to record an album. In Ocean's Twelve, three years later, he appeared only as himself.
The Bonfire of the Vanities in 1990 and Hudson Hawk in 1991 both flopped, and Willis's career hit a moderate slump. The Last Boy Scout, also from 1991, did find box office success. Striking Distance in 1993 did better still. Color of Night, released in 1994, was savaged by critics but sold well on home video. It became one of the Top 20 most-rented films in the United States in 1995. Maxim magazine ranked its sex scene the best in film history.
Quentin Tarantino's acclaimed Pulp Fiction gave Willis a leading role in one of its parts in 1994. The film's success boosted his career. His co-star was John Travolta, who had also appeared with him in Look Who's Talking.
12 Monkeys arrived in 1995, followed by The Fifth Element and The Jackal in 1997. The Jackal succeeded at the box office despite negative reviews. Mercury Rising in 1998 and Breakfast of Champions in 1999 were also poorly reviewed.
In 1996, Willis served as executive producer and star of the cartoon Bruno the Kid, which featured a CGI version of himself. That same year he joined Mike Judge's animated film Beavis and Butt-head Do America alongside Demi Moore. He voiced Muddy Grimes, a drunken criminal who mistakenly sends Judge's title characters to kill his wife, Dallas. Moore voiced Dallas. In 1998, his voice and likeness appeared in the PlayStation video game Apocalypse.
Broadway Brawler was a project in which Willis served as both producer and lead actor, and it failed. As compensation, he was contracted for three films: Armageddon, The Sixth Sense and Disney's The Kid. Armageddon and The Sixth Sense were both critical and commercial successes. Armageddon was the highest-grossing film of 1998 worldwide. The Kid, the third film in that deal, was still to come.
In 2000, Willis won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his role on Friends. He played the father of Ross Geller's much-younger girlfriend. The same work earned him a nomination for a 2001 American Comedy Award for funniest male guest appearance in a television series. That year he also played Jimmy "The Tulip" Tudeski in The Whole Nine Yards, alongside Friends star Matthew Perry. He played Russ Duritz in Disney's The Kid, opposite Emily Mortimer.
On the 26th of February 2003, Willis stepped in to fill for an ill David Letterman on the Late Show. He had been due to appear as a guest. On other visits he staged elaborate jokes. Once he wore a day-glo orange suit in honor of the Central Park gates. Another time, half his face was made up with simulated birdshot wounds, after the Harry Whittington shooting. He also parodied David Blaine by trying to stay underwater for only twenty seconds.
On the 12th of April 2007, he wore a Sanjaya Malakar wig. On the 25th of June 2007, he wore a mini wind turbine on his head for a joke about his own fictional documentary, An Unappealing Hunch. The title was wordplay on An Inconvenient Truth.
In Japan, Willis appeared in Subaru Legacy television commercials. Subaru built a limited run of Legacys badged "Subaru Legacy Touring Bruce" in his honor. In early 2009 he appeared in advertising for the insurer Norwich Union's change of name to Aviva.
Sin City in 2005 began a run of varied film work. That year he also worked with his eldest daughter, Rumer, in Hostage. In 2006 he appeared opposite Sharon Stone in Alpha Dog and voiced RJ the Raccoon in Over the Hedge. In 2007 he played a mutant soldier villain in Planet Terror, one half of the double feature Grindhouse. It was his second collaboration with the director Robert Rodriguez. Perfect Stranger, opposite Halle Berry, came the same year. What Just Happened followed in 2008 and Surrogates in 2009.
Five films paired Willis with Samuel L. Jackson: Loaded Weapon 1 in 1993, Pulp Fiction in 1994, Die Hard with a Vengeance in 1995, Unbreakable in 2000 and Glass in 2019. The two were also slated to work together in Black Water Transit before both dropped out.
Oliver Stone's Pinkville was another near miss. Willis was slated to play Army general William R. Peers in the drama about the investigation of the 1968 My Lai massacre. The 2007 Writers Guild of America strike led to the film's cancellation.
Cop Out, directed by Kevin Smith, paired Willis with Tracy Morgan in 2010. That year he also took a cameo as the CIA agent Mr. Church in The Expendables, alongside Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was the first time the three action stars had appeared on screen together. They filmed their short scene in an empty church on the 24th of October 2009. Red, in which he played Frank Moses, opened on the 15th of October 2010.
Wes Anderson directed Moonrise Kingdom in Rhode Island in 2011, with Willis alongside Bill Murray, Edward Norton and Frances McDormand. The film came out in 2012. Also in 2012, he played the older version of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character, Joe, in Looper, and he returned in an expanded role in The Expendables 2. He reprised Frank Moses in Red 2 in 2013.
On the 12th of October 2013, Willis hosted Saturday Night Live with Katy Perry as musical guest. In 2015 he made his Broadway debut at the Broadhurst Theatre in William Goldman's adaptation of Stephen King's novel Misery, opposite Laurie Metcalf. Critics generally panned his performance, calling it "vacant" and "inert". Comedy Central staged a roast of Willis, broadcast on the 29th of July 2018. In 2019 he played himself in a cameo in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.
On the 21st of November 1987, Willis married Demi Moore at the Golden Nugget Las Vegas. A second reception followed on the 20th of December for about 450 guests on a soundstage at Warner Bros. Studios Burbank. The couple had three daughters: Rumer, born in 1988, Scout, born in 1991, and Tallulah, born in 1994. They announced their separation on the 24th of June 1998. They filed for divorce on the 18th of October 2000, and it was finalized later that day. Willis said, "I felt I had failed as a father and a husband by not being able to make it work." He credited the actor Will Smith with helping him cope. He has stayed close to both Moore and her later husband, Ashton Kutcher, and attended their wedding.
Brooke Burns was Willis's fiancee until 2004, when they broke up after ten months together. On the 21st of March 2009, he married the model Emma Heming in Turks and Caicos. Guests included his three daughters, Moore and Kutcher. The ceremony was not legally binding, so the couple wed again in a civil ceremony in Beverly Hills six days later. They have two daughters, born in 2012 and 2014.
In 2002, Willis's eight-year-old daughter Tallulah suggested sending Girl Scout cookies to troops. Willis bought 12,000 boxes, and they were handed out to sailors aboard USS John F. Kennedy and other troops across the Middle East. He grew up in a military family. On screen he played soldiers in In Country, The Siege, Hart's War, Tears of the Sun, Grindhouse and G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
In 2003, he visited Iraq on a USO tour, singing to the troops with his band, The Accelerators. He considered joining the military for the second Iraq War but was deterred by his age. A report said he offered US$1 million to any noncombatant who turned in named terrorist leaders. In the June 2007 issue of Vanity Fair, he said the offer was hypothetical and not meant literally. He also criticized press coverage, saying reporters ignored soldiers helping restore power, reopen hospitals and turn the water back on.
In 2002, Harvard's Hasty Pudding Theatricals named Willis its Man of the Year. That same year, President George W. Bush appointed him national spokesman for Children in Foster Care. Willis wrote that he saw it as a way to serve his country by shining a little light on children who were wards of the government. France named him an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters in a ceremony in Paris in 2006. He was promoted to Commander on the 11th of February 2013. The French Prime Minister called him an actor who epitomizes the strength of American cinema. The American Cinematheque Award came in 2000, and New Jersey inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 2011. Not every honor flattered him. In 1987, the Golden Apple Awards gave him the Sour Apple.
In 1988, Willis and Demi Moore campaigned for Michael Dukakis, the Democratic governor of Massachusetts, in his presidential run. By 1992, Willis backed President George H. W. Bush and was an outspoken critic of Bill Clinton. In 1996, he declined to endorse Bob Dole because Dole had criticized Moore for her role in Striptease. He spoke at the 2000 Republican National Convention and supported George W. Bush that year. In 2006, he said he wanted smaller government and called himself apolitical rather than a Republican. In the 2012 election, he said he had a negative opinion of Mitt Romney.
In 2000, Willis and his business partner Arnold Rifkin started a production company, Cheyenne Enterprises. He left Rifkin to run it alone in 2007, after Live Free or Die Hard. In Hailey, Idaho, he owns several small businesses, including The Mint Bar and The Liberty Theater. He was also one of the first promoters of Planet Hollywood, alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. The three were paid for their appearances and endorsements through an employee stock ownership plan. In 2009, he became the international face of Belvedere SA's Sobieski Vodka in exchange for 3.3% ownership of the company. In 2018, he became brand ambassador for the Hungarian Hell Energy Drink.
Two production companies, Emmett/Furla Oasis and 308 Entertainment Inc., supplied most of Willis's work in his final years. Emmett/Furla Oasis alone produced 20 films starring him. Most went direct to video, and they were widely panned. Chris Nashawaty of Esquire described the films as "a profitable safe harbor" for older actors, much like The Expendables. Willis would often earn US$2 million for two days of work, with an average of 15 minutes of screen time per film. He still featured heavily in the promotional materials, which earned the films the derogatory nickname "geezer teasers".
In 2021, the Golden Raspberry Awards created a dedicated category, Worst Bruce Willis Performance in a 2021 Movie. It covered eight films he released that year.
People who worked on the films later said Willis seemed confused, did not understand why he was there and had to be fed lines through an earpiece. Days before he was due on the set of Out of Death in 2021, the screenwriter, Bill Lawrence, was told to shrink his role and cut his dialogue. The director, Mike Burns, was told to finish all of Willis's scenes in a single day of filming.
On the 30th of March 2022, Willis's family announced his retirement after a diagnosis of aphasia. Aphasia is a disorder typically caused by damage to the area of the brain that controls language expression and comprehension. The Golden Raspberry Awards retracted its Willis category. It judged a Razzie inappropriate for someone whose performance was affected by a medical condition. When he retired, 11 films he had completed were still awaiting release.
On the 16th of February 2023, the family announced a further diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia. Gregg Day, a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic's Florida campus, says symptoms include difficulties with language and comprehension and misinterpretation of instructions. The family said his condition had progressed and that "challenges with communication are just one symptom of the disease". They hoped media attention on Willis would raise awareness of the illness.
Emma Willis published her memoir The Unexpected Journey in September 2025, about her experience as her husband's caregiver. As his condition progressed, Willis moved to a separate one-story home with an on-site team providing full-time support. In an August 2025 interview, Emma said the decision put the needs of their two daughters first. She believed he would have made the choice himself if he could. She said the family visits him "a lot" for meals and other time together.
