  • Sandra Bullock holds a distinction that no other actor can claim. On the night before she collected the Academy Award for Best Actress for The Blind Side, she picked up the Razzie Award for Worst Actress for a different film, All About Steve. Both honors belonged to the same year, and she is the only actor in history to have won both for the same year. How does one performer land on opposite ends of the scale within a day? The answer begins far from Hollywood, runs through a Manhattan coat check, a bus rigged with a bomb, and an astronaut adrift in orbit. Along the way sits a long series of decisions about which parts to take, which to refuse, and what to build behind the camera.

  • Arlington County, Virginia, is where Sandra Annette Bullock was born on the 26th of July 1964. Her mother, Helga Mathilde, born Meyer, was an opera singer and voice teacher from Germany who lived from 1942 to 2000. Her father, John Wilson Bullock, was an Army employee and part-time voice coach from Birmingham, Alabama, who lived from 1925 to 2018. He ran the Army's Military Postal Service in Europe, and he met his future wife while stationed in Nuremberg. The couple married in Germany. Bullock's maternal grandfather was a rocket scientist from Nuremberg. Back in Arlington, her father later worked with the Army Materiel Command and then became a contractor for The Pentagon. She also has a younger sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado.

For 12 years, Bullock lived in Nuremberg in West Germany and in Vienna and Salzburg in Austria. She grew up speaking German and received a Waldorf education in Nuremberg. Whenever her mother left on European opera tours, young Sandra usually stayed with her aunt Christl and her cousin Susanne. Susanne later married the politician Peter Ramsauer.

Ballet and vocal arts filled her childhood schedule. She often traveled with her mother and took small parts in the opera productions her mother appeared in. In Nuremberg, she sang in the opera's children's choir. A scar above her left eye dates from a fall into a creek during those years. Although she keeps her American citizenship, she applied for German citizenship in 2009.

  • Washington-Lee High School in Arlington is where Bullock cheered on the sidelines and performed in school theater productions. After graduating in 1982, she enrolled at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. There she earned a BFA in Drama in 1987 and appeared in stage productions including Peter Pan and Three Sisters.

Manhattan came next, and so did a string of jobs that paid the rent. She worked as a bartender, a cocktail waitress, and a coat checker while going from audition to audition. She also took acting classes with Sanford Meisner. Her screen debut was a minor role in the thriller Hangmen, released in 1987. She appeared in student films and then landed a part in an Off-Broadway play called No Time Flat.

Director Alan J. Levi saw that performance and offered her a role in the 1989 television film Bionic Showdown: The Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman. Small parts in independent films followed. In 1990 she took the lead in the short-lived NBC television version of Working Girl. Love Potion No. 9 arrived in 1992, followed in 1993 by The Thing Called Love, Fire on the Amazon, and the science fiction action film Demolition Man.

In 1994, Bullock played Annie Porter in Speed, a passenger who ends up driving a bus rigged by a terrorist. Keanu Reeves starred opposite her. She had to read for the part so the filmmakers could test her chemistry with Reeves. Looking back, she recalled that they had to do "all these really physical scenes together, rolling around on the floor and stuff." One review praised it as a terrific popcorn thriller with outstanding performances from Reeves, Dennis Hopper, and Bullock.

The film grossed $350 million worldwide and helped establish her as a Hollywood actress. She won Best Actress at the 21st Saturn Awards. At the 1995 MTV Movie Awards she took both Best Female Performance and Most Desirable Female.

Two more films arrived in 1995. In While You Were Sleeping, she played a lonely Chicago Transit Authority token collector who saves a man's life. One critic wrote that the film was made with such skill, and with such a charming performance from Bullock, that it "gives formula a good name." The role brought her first Golden Globe nomination in the comedy or musical category. In The Net, she played a computer programmer who stumbles onto a conspiracy. Critic Owen Gleiberman compared her smile and eyes to those of Julia Roberts. The two films earned $182 million and $110.6 million.

  • A Time to Kill, released in 1996, adapted John Grisham's 1989 novel of the same name. Bullock played a member of the defense team in the trial of two men who had raped a young girl. Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew McConaughey, and Kevin Spacey shared the screen with her. The role earned her an MTV Movie Award nomination for Best Female Performance.

Speed 2: Cruise Control paid her $11 million in 1997. She took the job to secure financial backing for her next project, Hope Floats. The sequel was a critical and commercial flop, and she later spoke of it with scorn. In Hope Floats, released in 1998, she played a housewife whose husband, played by Michael Paré, confesses his infidelity on a talk show. Critic James Berardinelli wrote that her "undisputed strength lies in a blend of light drama and comedy." The film grossed $81.4 million worldwide.

Practical Magic, also from 1998, paired Bullock with Nicole Kidman as two witch sisters threatened by a curse on their love lives. It opened at the top of the North American chart but still flopped at the box office. That same year she voiced Miriam in the DreamWorks Animation film The Prince of Egypt. She also wrote, produced, and directed a short film, Making Sandwiches. In Forces of Nature in 1999, she played a free-spirited drifter opposite Ben Affleck. A trade magazine, Boxoffice, praised the chemistry between the two, and the film made $93 million worldwide.

Miss Congeniality in 2000 sent her undercover as an FBI agent in a beauty pageant. It grossed $212 million and brought her a second Golden Globe nomination in the comedy or musical category. The same year, in 28 Days, directed by Betty Thomas, she played a newspaper columnist ordered into a rehabilitation program for alcoholism.

In 2002, Murder by Numbers cast her as a seasoned homicide detective. Roger Ebert gave it three stars out of four and said she worked against her natural likability to build a sad, strange, inward character. Two Weeks Notice, also from 2002, put her opposite Hugh Grant as a lawyer who quits on her boss. Critic Liz Braun found the pair "perfectly paired" even though she thought the film itself was amateurish in many ways. It made $199 million worldwide.

Crash, in 2004, gave Bullock a supporting part as the wife of a district attorney in a large ensemble cast. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and some critics thought her work there was the best of her career to that point. The whole cast received the Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous paid her $17.5 million, though Ebert called it a "doubly unnecessary" sequel. In 2005 she shared the Women in Film Crystal Award.

In 2006, she reunited with Keanu Reeves for the romantic drama The Lake House. Their characters were kept apart through the story, and the two actors shared a set for only two weeks. That year she also played Harper Lee in Infamous, a drama based on George Plimpton's 1997 book about Truman Capote, with Toby Jones and Daniel Craig. Premonition followed in 2007, with Bullock as a housewife who lives the days around her husband's death out of order. Reviews were negative, yet it grossed $84.1 million worldwide.

  • The Proposal, released in 2009, cast Bullock as a pushy editor-in-chief opposite Ryan Reynolds. It grossed $317 million worldwide, which made it her fourth-most successful picture up to that point. It also brought her a third Golden Globe nomination in the comedy or musical category.

The Blind Side opened at number two behind New Moon, with $34.2 million, her second-highest opening weekend ever. It went on to gross over $309 million, her highest-grossing domestic film and her fourth-highest worldwide. It became the first film in history to pass $200 million with only one top-billed female star. Bullock played Leigh Anne Tuohy, the adoptive mother of Michael Oher. She had turned the role down three times because she felt uncomfortable portraying a devout Christian. Her performance also won the Golden Globe, the Actor Award, and the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actress, and the film was nominated for Best Picture.

By 2010, Entertainment Weekly reported that she was courted for virtually every female starring role Hollywood had to offer. Ben Affleck, her co-star from Forces of Nature, said: "Every movie you hear about and every script I see, they say, 'We're going after Sandra Bullock for the woman'." She chose to quietly put acting on hold and focus on her personal life. She said of her new approach: "As I've gotten older, I say 'No' a lot more. I've become a better fighter for my work. I didn't have the guts to do that before." She was the world's highest-paid actress in 2010.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close in 2011 paired her with Tom Hanks. She played a widow of the September 11 attacks in this adaptation of a novel. Reviews were mixed, yet the film earned many nominations, including one for Best Picture. Bullock received a Teen Choice Awards nomination for Favorite Actress Drama.

In 2013, The Heat teamed her with Melissa McCarthy. Bullock played an FBI Special Agent who joins a city detective to take down a mobster in Boston. It took in $230 million worldwide. Gravity followed, with Bullock as an astronaut stranded in space opposite George Clooney. It premiered at the 70th Venice Film Festival, where it received a standing ovation, and opened on the 4th of October 2013 to coincide with the start of World Space Week. One description called it the most realistic and beautifully choreographed film ever set in space.

Bullock played Dr. Ryan Stone, and several critics considered the performance the best of her career. Variety praised her "grave dignity" and said she held the screen effortlessly once the film became a one-woman show. She was nominated for the Academy Award, the Golden Globe, the BAFTA Award, the Actor Award, and the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actress. Gravity grossed $716 million worldwide, her second-most successful film. In 2014, she once more ranked as Hollywood's highest-paid actress.

  • Minions, released in 2015, put Bullock's voice behind Scarlet Overkill, the villain of the animated film. It grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide and remains her highest-grossing film. That same year she served as executive producer of Our Brand Is Crisis and starred as a political consultant hired to win a Bolivian presidential election. The drama was based on a 2005 documentary of the same name by Rachel Boynton. Peter Debruge of Variety called her portrayal "easily one of the best female roles of the last 10 years." Even so, the film had the worst wide release opening of her career.

In Ocean's 8, from 2018, Bullock played Debbie Ocean, sister of Danny Ocean, who plans a heist of the annual Met Gala in New York City. Gary Ross directed this all-female spin-off of the Ocean's Eleven franchise. The Hollywood Reporter's Josh Spieger called it a welcome return to the big screen and said her more selective approach to roles could pay off in dividends. The film had the best debut of any in the franchise and made $297 million globally.

Bird Box, also from 2018, was a Netflix post-apocalyptic horror film based on a novel of the same name. Bullock played Malorie, a woman guiding herself and her children to safety despite an unseen threat. Variety called her performance "wonderfully self-reliant," and The Wrap found it "fascinating and terrifying to watch." It was the most-watched film on Netflix within 28 days of release until 2021. Her next Netflix drama, The Unforgivable, was directed by Nora Fingscheidt. Bullock played a woman released from prison after serving a sentence for a violent crime. Critic Gary Kramer of Salon.com praised a "steely performance" even while calling the film "forgettable." On release it became the fifth most-streamed title on the platform.

The Lost City, in 2022, was a Paramount Pictures comedy-adventure in the style of Romancing the Stone. Bullock played a successful but depressed best-selling romance novelist, with Channing Tatum and Daniel Radcliffe alongside her. Brothers Adam and Aaron Nee directed. Critics praised her chemistry with Tatum, and it grossed $190.8 million globally. According to Forbes, that made her the first actress to have $100 million earners in live-action star vehicles over four different decades.

Bullet Train, also from 2022, starred Brad Pitt, and Bullock appeared in a mostly vocal performance. She is also set to reprise her role as Sally Owens in Practical Magic 2.

  • Fortis Films is the production company Bullock owns, with offices in Austin, Texas, and West Hollywood, California. Through it she has produced several of her own star vehicles, among them Hope Floats, Miss Congeniality, Two Weeks Notice, and Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous. Her father, John Bullock, served as its CEO, and her sister Gesine Bullock-Prado is the former president. Across her career she has starred in over 50 films and helped produce over 15 works in film and television.

The ABC sitcom George Lopez, which ran from 2002 to 2007, also had Bullock as executive producer. She made numerous appearances on the show as Accident Amy, an accident-prone employee at the factory managed by Lopez's character. In 2002 she received the Raul Julia Award for Excellence, recognizing her role in expanding career openings for Hispanic talent in media and entertainment.

In November 2006, Bullock founded a restaurant in Austin called Bess Bistro, on West 6th Street. Later she opened Walton's Fancy and Staple across the street, in a building she extensively renovated. Walton's combines a bakery, an upscale restaurant, and a floral shop, and it also offers event planning. Bess Bistro closed on the 20th of September 2015, after almost nine years in business.

The American Red Cross has received at least five donations of $1 million from Bullock. The first public gift of that size went to the Liberty Disaster Relief Fund. Three years later she gave in response to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunamis. She gave the same amount for Haiti in 2010 and for the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. In 2017 she gave $1 million for Hurricane Harvey relief in Texas.

In 2010, Bullock joined other public figures in a public service announcement urging people to sign a petition for clean-up of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. New Orleans's Warren Easton High School, severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina, benefited from her donations. For that support she entered the Warren Easton Hall of Fame in 2012 and won the Favorite Humanitarian Award at the 39th People's Choice Awards.

In 2014, she designed a space-themed Paddington Bear statue nicknamed "Gravity Bear," a nod to her 2013 film. It was number 43 of the 58 statues placed around London for the Paddington Trail. It stood at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich and was later auctioned to raise funds for the NSPCC.

The media have called Bullock "America's sweetheart," a nod to a nature described as "friendly and direct and so unpretentious." People magazine placed her among its 50 Most Beautiful People in 1996, 1999, and 2011. It named her Woman of the Year in 2010 and Most Beautiful Woman in 2015. In 2010, Time put her on its Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world. Entertainment Weekly called her The Most Powerful Actress in Hollywood that same year.

On the 24th of March 2005, she received a motion picture star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6801 Hollywood Boulevard. In 2013, The Hollywood Reporter named her among The Most Powerful Women in Entertainment, and Entertainment Weekly named her Entertainer of the Year because of The Heat and Gravity. She ranked number 2 on the 2014 Forbes list of most powerful actresses. In 2013 she also pressed her hands and feet into the cement of the forecourt at the TCL Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard.

  • Los Angeles, Austin, and New Orleans are the cities where Bullock owns property. On the 20th of December 2000, she was aboard a private jet that crashed on a runway at Jackson Hole Airport. She and the two crew members escaped uninjured. Pilot error and blizzard conditions were blamed, and the crew could not activate the runway lights during a night landing.

In October 2004, a jury ruled in Bullock's favor against Benny Daneshjou, the builder of her home on Lake Austin, Texas. The jury found the house uninhabitable and awarded her a multimillion-dollar judgment. The house was later torn down and rebuilt. Daneshjou and his insurer eventually settled with her for roughly half the verdict.

Actor Tate Donovan, whom she met while filming Love Potion No. 9, was once her fiance, and their relationship lasted three years. She also dated football player Troy Aikman and the actors Matthew McConaughey and Ryan Gosling. On the 16th of July 2005, she married Jesse James, a motorcycle builder and host of Monster Garage. They had met when she arranged for her ten-year-old godson to meet him as a Christmas present.

In November 2009, Bullock and James entered a custody battle with James's second ex-wife, former adult film actress Janine Lindemulder. Lindemulder and James had a child together, and the couple won full legal custody of James's five-year-old daughter. Earlier, on the 18th of April 2008, a drunk driver hit their vehicle head-on while Bullock was in Massachusetts shooting The Proposal. They were uninjured.

In March 2010, several women claimed to have had affairs with James during the marriage. Bullock canceled European promotional appearances for The Blind Side, citing "unforeseen personal reasons." On the 18th of March, James issued a public apology, saying: "There is only one person to blame for this whole situation, and that is me." His publicist announced on the 30th of March that he had checked into a rehabilitation facility. Bullock filed for divorce in Austin on the 23rd of April, and it was finalized on the 28th of June, citing a "conflict of personalities."

Bullock and James had begun an initial adoption process four months before the scandal. A son, born in New Orleans in January 2010, began living with them that month. They chose to keep the news private until after the Oscars ceremony that March. After the split, Bullock continued the adoption as a single parent.

Beginning in 2002, a man named Thomas James Weldon stalked Bullock across several states. She obtained a restraining order against him in 2003 and it was renewed in 2006. After the order expired and he was released from a mental institution, he again traveled through several states to find her, and she obtained a new restraining order. On the 22nd of April 2007, a woman named Marcia Diana Valentine was found lying outside the Orange County home of Bullock and James. When James confronted her, she ran to her car and tried to run him over. Valentine was convicted of stalking and sentenced to three years' probation. Bullock won a restraining order keeping her away for three years.

Joshua James Corbett broke into Bullock's Los Angeles home in June 2014. Bullock locked herself in a room and dialed 911. In 2017, Corbett pleaded no contest and received five years' probation for stalking her and breaking into the residence, along with a ten-year protective order. After he missed a court date, officers went to his parents' property on the 2nd of May 2018 to arrest him. He refused to leave and threatened to shoot, which led to a five-hour standoff with a SWAT team. When officers entered, they found that he had killed himself.

In December 2015, Bullock announced that she had adopted a second child. She appeared on the cover of People magazine with her then three-year-old daughter. From mid-2015 she was in a relationship with photographer Bryan Randall, which lasted until his death from ALS on the 5th of August 2023.
