  • Linkin Park formed in 1996 in Agoura Hills, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, and went on to sell more than 100 million records worldwide. Its founders were high school friends with a bedroom studio and no record deal. Years of rejection followed. So did albums that sold in the millions and, much later, a silence that nobody had planned. How did a band that mixed rap and rock win over a skeptical label? Why did it keep rewriting its own sound after conquering the charts? And how does a group carry on after losing its most recognizable voice?

  • Mike Shinoda's makeshift bedroom studio is where the music began in 1996. He, Rob Bourdon, and Brad Delson had attended Agoura High School together, and they recorded songs there with very few resources. After graduating, they recruited Joe Hahn, Dave "Phoenix" Farrell, and Mark Wakefield, and called the group Xero. In November 1997 they released a four-track demo named Xero. That same month they played their first show, opening for SX-10 and System of a Down at the Whisky a Go Go, a nightclub in West Hollywood.

Jeff Blue, a vice president of A&R at Zomba Music, became the band's first ally in the industry. A&R executives are the people who scout and develop new artists. Delson knew Blue from a college internship and brought him to the group. Blue offered frank criticism, and after seeing Xero play live in 1998 he liked what he heard. He still believed the band needed a different vocalist. No record deal came. Frustration built, Wakefield left to look for other projects, and Farrell went on tour with Tasty Snax, a Christian punk and ska band.

In March 1999, Blue recommended Chester Bennington, a singer from Arizona who had performed with the alternative rock band Grey Daze. Among the applicants, he stood out for the dynamics of his singing. The group renamed itself Hybrid Theory. The fresh chemistry between Shinoda and Bennington revived the band and pushed it to write new songs. Kyle Christner joined on bass for a short time. In May 1999 the band released a self-titled extended play and spread it through internet chat-rooms and forums with the help of an online street team.

Major labels kept saying no, so the band turned to Blue again. By then he was a vice president at Warner Bros. Records. After three earlier attempts to interest the label, he helped the band sign there in 1999 as a developing artist.

Warner Bros. asked for a new name, because Hybrid Theory could be confused with another act called Hybrid. The members considered Plear and Platinum Lotus Foundation. They finally chose Linkin Park, a tribute to Lincoln Park in Santa Monica, which is now called Christine Emerson Reed Park. They had wanted to spell it Lincoln, but changed the spelling to Linkin so they could own the internet domain linkinpark.com.

Inside the label, the early recordings met doubt. An A&R representative disliked the mix of hip hop and rock and suggested that Bennington demote or fire Shinoda and make a straight rock record. Bennington backed Shinoda and refused to compromise the band's vision. Farrell returned in late 2000, in time for the record that would make the group famous.

  • Hybrid Theory reached shops on the 24th of October 2000 and distilled roughly five years of the band's work. It sold more than 4.8 million copies in its first year and became the best-selling album of 2001. The song "In the End" climbed to number two on the US Billboard Hot 100, the band's highest placing up to that point. "Crawling" and "One Step Closer" became fixtures on alternative rock radio playlists. Songs from the album also appeared in the films Dracula 2000, Little Nicky, and Valentine.

At the Grammy Awards, "Crawling" won Best Hard Rock Performance, and the band also received nominations for Best New Artist and Best Rock Album. MTV gave the video for "In the End" its Best Rock Video award.

Invitations for Ozzfest, the Family Values Tour, and KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas poured in. The band also built a tour of its own, Projekt Revolution, with Cypress Hill, Adema, and Snoop Dogg on the bill. Within a year it had played over 320 concerts. In November 2001 it launched its official fan club and street team, Linkin Park Underground, with Jessica Sklar, and released its first DVD, Frat Party at the Pankake Festival.

Reanimation, a remix album released on the 30th of July 2002, reworked songs from Hybrid Theory alongside tracks that had not appeared on the album. Guests included Black Thought, Jonathan Davis, and Aaron Lewis. It reached number two on the Billboard 200 and sold nearly 270,000 copies in its first week.

In December 2002 the band announced a new album inspired by Meteora, a rocky region of Greece where monasteries sit on top of tall rock formations. The sound blended nu metal and rap metal with fresh touches, including a shakuhachi, a Japanese flute made of bamboo. Meteora came out on the 25th of March 2003 and reached number one on the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart. It sold more than 800,000 copies in its first week and nearly three million by October 2003. The singles included "Somewhere I Belong", "Breaking the Habit", "Faint", and "Numb".

Metallica invited the band to the Summer Sanitarium Tour 2003, alongside Limp Bizkit, Mudvayne, and Deftones. A release called Live in Texas captured recordings from that tour. The video for "Somewhere I Belong" won Best Rock Video, and at the 2004 Radio Music Awards the band took Artist of the Year while "Numb" won Song of the Year. Meteora finished 2003 as the third best-selling album in the United States, though it did not match its predecessor.

A new contract with Warner Bros. Records arrived only in December 2005, after months of trust and financial disputes had strained the relationship.

  • In November 2004, Linkin Park and Jay-Z released Collision Course, a record that intermixed lyrics and backing tracks from both artists' catalogues. It sold over 300,000 copies in its first week. It became only the second EP to top the Billboard 200, following Alice in Chains' Jar of Flies in 1994.

Individual members chased separate projects too. Shinoda formed Fort Minor, whose debut album The Rising Tied drew critical praise, with Jay-Z helping along the way. He also remixed Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" as "Enjoy the Silence 04". Bennington appeared on DJ Lethal's "State of the Art" and worked with Dead by Sunrise.

In March 2004 the band donated $75,000 to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. It raised money for victims of Hurricane Charley in 2004 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. After the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, it staged several charity concerts and set up a fund called Music for Relief. At Live 8 in Philadelphia, the band performed alongside Jay-Z for a global audience.

The two acts reunited at the 2006 Grammy ceremony, where they played "Numb/Encore" and won Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Paul McCartney joined them on stage and added verses from "Yesterday". Later that year the band played the Summer Sonic festival in Japan, which Metallica hosted.

Music for Relief kept working long after those years. In January 2010, the song "Not Alone" appeared on Download to Donate for Haiti, a compilation for earthquake victims. After the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Tohoku, Shinoda designed two T-shirts whose proceeds went to Music for Relief. On the 22nd of March 2011 the band released "Issho Ni", which means "we're in this together". After Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, the band played Club Nokia in Los Angeles for Music for Relief: Concert for the Philippines, where the Offspring, Bad Religion, Heart, and the Filharmonic also performed.

  • Producer Rick Rubin took charge of Minutes to Midnight, which the band began recording in 2006. After fourteen months of work, the members cut five of the original seventeen tracks. The title referred to the Doomsday Clock and hinted at darker lyrical themes. The album arrived on the 15th of May 2007, sold over 623,000 copies in its first week, and took the top spot on the Billboard charts. Its lead single, "What I've Done", peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and appeared in the 2007 film Transformers.

Only two songs on that record feature rapping, and Shinoda sings lead on "In Between", "Hands Held High", and "No Roads Left". The Los Angeles Times compared the change to a stage in the career of U2. Bennington likened genre to "a facial expression or an emotion". He explained, "We aren't just one thing." He added, "We've always felt like we weren't bound to just one genre." Shinoda told Metal Hammer that he had avoided the nu metal label in the early days. He remembered a time when the term was "actually pretty cool. It's almost impossible to imagine!"

In May 2009 the band announced a fourth album, and Shinoda promised something "genre-busting". Rubin returned to produce it. While working on it, the band helped film composer Hans Zimmer create the score for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and Hahn directed the video for "New Divide". Ahead of the album, the band also released an iOS game, 8-Bit Rebellion!, in which finishing the game earned players a new song, "Blackbirds".

A Thousand Suns was released on the 14th of September 2010. The band played "The Catalyst" live for the first time at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, staged at Griffith Observatory. Shinoda named Chuck D and Public Enemy as an influence on how many layers he wanted the record to have, and the album included samples of speeches by American political figures. James Montgomery of MTV compared it to Radiohead's Kid A. Jordy Kasko of Review, Rinse, Repeat compared it to both Kid A and Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon.

Living Things reached the United States on the 26th of June 2012. It sold over 223,000 copies in its first week and landed at number one. Shinoda said the title reflected a record about people and personal interactions. "Castle of Glass" was nominated for Best Song in a Game at the 2012 Spike Video Game Awards but lost to Beck's "Cities". In 2013 the band teamed up with Steve Aoki on "A Light That Never Comes" for LP Recharge, a puzzle game on Facebook. The remix album Recharged followed on the 29th of October 2013.

Rakim guested on "Guilty All the Same", the first single from The Hunting Party, released in March 2014. Shinoda and Delson produced the album, which arrived on the 13th of June 2014 in most countries. Tom Morello, Daron Malakian, and Page Hamilton contributed. Shinoda said, "It's a rock record. It's loud and it's rock." The next day, at Download Festival, the band played Hybrid Theory from start to finish.

Then came a pop turn. "Heavy" featured the singer Kiiara, the first female vocalist on an original song on a Linkin Park studio album. Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter helped write the lyrics. The cover art, showing six kids playing in the ocean, was revealed through digital puzzles across social media. One More Light was released on the 19th of May 2017.

  • On the 20th of July 2017, Chester Bennington died, and his death was ruled a suicide by hanging. Earlier that day, the band had released a music video for "Talking to Myself". Shinoda confirmed the news on Twitter, writing, "Shocked and heartbroken, but it's true. An official statement will come out as soon as we have one". One day later the band canceled the North American leg of its One More Light World Tour.

On the 28th of July, Shinoda announced that donations to Music for Relief would be redirected to the One More Light Fund, set up in Bennington's memory. On the 4th of August, the day the band had been due on Good Morning America, twelve-year-old Toni Cornell appeared with OneRepublic and sang "Hallelujah". She is the daughter of Soundgarden's Chris Cornell. Bennington was godfather to her younger brother, Christopher, and had performed the same song at Cornell's funeral. Cornell had died two months earlier, also by suicide by hanging.

On the 22nd of August the band announced a Los Angeles tribute show. Linkin Park and Friends: Celebrate Life in Honor of Chester Bennington took place at the Hollywood Bowl on the 27th of October 2017, with guests performing the band's songs. It ran for more than three hours and streamed live on YouTube. As of March 2026, it has 26 million views. The band cancelled planned Japanese dates on the 3rd of October, released the live album One More Light Live on the 15th of December, and dedicated its American Music Award for Favorite Alternative Artist to Bennington.

On the 28th of January 2018, Shinoda answered a fan on Twitter: "I have every intention on continuing with LP, and the guys feel the same. We have a lot of rebuilding to do, and questions to answer, so it'll take time." Two months later, he told Vulture he was uncertain about the band's future. On the 18th of May, UCLA presented the band with the George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement. In February 2019, he said, "It's not my goal to look for a new singer." He added, "I would never want to feel like we are replacing Chester."

Quietly, Shinoda, Farrell, and Hahn began making music together. By 2019 Delson had rejoined them, but Bourdon chose not to take part and eventually left the band. That year the group met Emily Armstrong, the vocalist of Dead Sara, and began working with her and the drummer Colin Brittain. On the 28th of April 2020, Farrell revealed that new music was in progress. That August the band released "She Couldn't", recorded in 1999, which appeared on the 20th anniversary edition of Hybrid Theory on the 9th of October.

On the 8th of January 2021, the band shared a remix of "One Step Closer" by the electronic duo 100 gecs, the first of several remixes inspired by Reanimation. Later that year Shinoda said, "Now is not the time. We don't have the focus on it. We don't have the math worked out." He meant emotional and creative math rather than financial. In February 2023 the band teased the 20th anniversary of Meteora with a game on its website and released the unheard demo "Lost", ahead of the reissue on the 7th of April.

  • In 2023, without telling the public, the band asked Armstrong and Brittain to help it reform, record new music, and play its older songs. On the 23rd of February 2024 it released "Friendly Fire", an unreleased track from the One More Light sessions. On the 12th of April came Papercuts, the band's first greatest hits album, which also gave "Qwerty", first heard on LP Underground 6.0 in 2006, its first official release. On the 30th of April 2024, Billboard reported that the booking agency WME had taken offers for a reunion tour with a female vocalist in place of Bennington.

On the 5th of September 2024, a livestream announced the comeback and welcomed Armstrong and Brittain. The band performed "The Emptiness Machine", the lead single from its eighth album, From Zero, released on the 15th of November 2024. The record returned to more of the group's original sound while drawing on all of its earlier albums. Alex Feder played guitar in Delson's place at the event, and Delson then announced he would step back from touring to focus on the "behind the scenes" side of the band.

Armstrong's arrival drew criticism over her ties to the Church of Scientology and what some saw as support for Danny Masterson, a convicted rapist. Cedric Bixler-Zavala of the Mars Volta, who had first raised the accusations in 2023, said the band was "not doing their due diligence before hiring her". One of Bennington's sons said the band had "betrayed the trust" of its fans. Armstrong answered on an Instagram story, saying she had not been in contact with Masterson since attending his 2020 court appearance and that she condemned his crimes. She did not clarify her current status within the church. The BBC later noted that her lyrics with Dead Sara suggested a rejection of the church's teachings.

The first leg of the live return began at the Kia Forum in Inglewood on the 11th of September 2024. It was a nine-date arena tour across four continents that ended in São Paulo, Brazil, on the 16th of November 2024. "Heavy Is the Crown", released on the 24th of September, became the main theme for Riot Games' 2024 League of Legends World Championship. "Over Each Other" followed on the 24th of October and "Two Faced" on the 13th of November.

The studio did not stay quiet for long. "Up From the Bottom" arrived on the 27th of March 2025, "Unshatter" on the 25th of April, and "Let You Fade" on the 16th of May, all tied to the deluxe version of From Zero. A worldwide stadium and arena tour for 2025 included the band's first show at Wembley Stadium in England. On the 31st of May 2025, the band played at the UEFA Champions League final at the Allianz Arena in Munich. In November 2025 it earned two nominations for the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, held on the 1st of February 2026. From Zero was up for Best Rock Album and "The Emptiness Machine" for Best Rock Performance. That same weekend, "Heavy Is the Crown" served as the theme song for WWE's Royal Rumble.

  • Hybrid Theory shipped 12 million copies in the United States and has sold 30 million worldwide, while Meteora sold 20 million worldwide. Eleven of the band's singles reached number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, the second-most for any artist. Linkin Park became the first rock band to pass one billion views on YouTube. Its trophy shelf includes two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, 10 MTV Europe Music Awards, and three World Music Awards.

In 2003, MTV2 ranked the group sixth-greatest of the music video era and third-best of the new millennium. Billboard placed it at number 19 on its list of the decade's best artists, and a VH1 Bracket Madness poll in 2012 voted it the greatest artist of the 2000s. In 2014, Kerrang! called it the Biggest Rock Band in the World Right Now. A year later, the magazine's Rock 100 put "In the End" and "Final Masquerade" in its top two places.

A 2015 analysis of Billboard hits from 1950 to 2005, based on songs then on Spotify, scored "Numb" and "In the End" as the third and sixth most timeless. That made Linkin Park the only artist with more than one song in the top ten. Billboard estimated that the band earned US$5 million between May 2011 and May 2012, ranking it the 40th-highest-paid musical artist.

Critics were divided. William Ruhlmann of AllMusic called the early sound "a Johnny-come-lately to an already overdone musical style". Rolling Stone described "Breaking the Habit" as "risky, beautiful art". Jon Caramanica of The New York Times wrote that the band "brought the collision of hard rock and hip-hop to its commercial and aesthetic peak". Many of the group's lyrics deal with alienation, introversion, and personal struggle and suffering.

The band's own influences ranged from Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails to the Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, and the Beatles. In turn, artists as different as Billie Eilish, Halsey, the Weeknd, Bring Me the Horizon, and Machine Gun Kelly have cited Linkin Park as an influence. On the 20th of August 2020, the band's 20th anniversary, it teamed up with the virtual reality rhythm game Beat Saber to release 11 maps based on its songs.
