God of War (franchise)

8 sections
  • When the credits of the first God of War finished rolling, a closing line promised, "Kratos Will Return." He did, again and again. The God of War franchise now spans ten installments, beginning on the PlayStation 2 in 2005 and reaching consoles, handhelds and mobile phones. By November 2023 it had sold an estimated 66 million games or more worldwide. A former Santa Monica Studio employee, Aaron Kaufman, calls it Sony's most profitable brand. Its hero is Kratos, a Spartan warrior whose rage carries him from a mortal battlefield to the seat of a god. Why would a studio build a blockbuster series around a man so consumed by vengeance? How does a story rooted in Greek myth end up in the frozen realms of Norse legend? And how does a tale of revenge become one of redemption and fatherhood? The answers run through design choices, hardware limits and some surprising collaborators.

  • David Jaffe has said the original idea was his own, but he points to Capcom's Onimusha as the spark. After playing it, his reaction was "let's do that with Greek mythology." The game that followed reached North America on the 22nd of March 2005 for the PlayStation 2. Santa Monica Studio had finished its first game, Kinetica, in 2001. It began work on God of War in 2002 and showed it publicly two years later, at an event called Gamers' Day 2004.

Jaffe's other influences came from film and print. The 1981 movie Clash of the Titans mattered, but he said "the real high concept for me was... merging it with Heavy Metal magazine." He enjoyed both "the kids stuff... with Greek mythology" and the chance to add adult themes such as sex and violence. Raiders of the Lost Ark, also from 1981, fed into the mix as well.

Charlie Wen, the director of visual development and lead concept artist, drew on those same films. He also looked to the 2001 film Gladiator for the tone of Kratos and his world. The play style borrowed from the Strider arcade series. The developers described the result as merging the action of Devil May Cry with the puzzle-solving of Ico. Players would be able to sunder enemies with a single move, such as ripping them in half.

The team gave itself "lots of freedom" with the myths. Jaffe said they took the "coolest aspects of the subject" and built art and story from them. The engine underneath was Santa Monica's own, named Kinetica after the studio's debut game, and it would power the sequel too.

  • Ten years of service to the Olympian gods open the first game, and Kratos is tired of it. Athena sends him to find Pandora's box, the one thing that can defeat Ares, who is rampaging through Athens. Flashbacks explain why Kratos hates his old master. Ares once saved Kratos and his army from destruction in battle. He then tricked Kratos into killing his own family, an act that turned him into the "Ghost of Sparta." Kratos finds the box, kills Ares and climbs Mount Olympus to take the title of God of War.

God of War II reached North America on the 13th of March 2007. Angry at his fellow gods, Kratos tears through the city of Rhodes. Zeus steps in and betrays him. The Titan Gaia rescues Kratos and tells him to find the Sisters of Fate, who can change his fate and stop Zeus from killing him. Just as Kratos is about to kill the god, Athena sacrifices herself to protect Zeus and Olympus. She reveals that Kratos is Zeus' son and that Zeus betrayed him out of fear. Kratos then joins Gaia and the Titans in an assault on Olympus.

  • Ascension reached North America on the 12th of March 2013 and is set roughly six months after Kratos was tricked into killing his wife and daughter. The three Furies imprison him for breaking his blood oath to Ares. With help from the oath keeper and Orkos, Ares' estranged son, he learns that Ares and the Furies plan to overthrow Olympus. Ares picked Kratos as his servant to help with exactly that plan. Kratos escapes, kills the Furies, then kills Orkos, who begs for release. Free of Ares' bond, he begins to suffer the nightmares that will haunt him for years. Producer Todd Papy, who directed the game, said it was not called God of War IV because it is a prequel rather than a sequel.

Ru Weerasuriya directed Chains of Olympus, which reached North America on the 4th of March 2008 for the PlayStation Portable. Developer Ready at Dawn had pitched a handheld God of War soon after the original launched. The story fits inside Kratos' decade of service to the gods. He halts a Persian invasion of Attica and learns that the god Morpheus has plunged the world into darkness. While investigating the abduction of the sun god Helios, he stops the goddess Persephone from using the Titan Atlas to destroy the world.

The PlayStation Portable ran at 222 megahertz, which was too slow for the studio's ambitions. Ready at Dawn convinced Sony to raise the clock speed to 333 megahertz through a firmware upgrade. Blood effects, lighting, shadows and enemy intelligence all improved, but battery life dropped noticeably. Weerasuriya later said that multiplayer options, puzzles, characters and dialogue were cut for time.

Betrayal came out on the 20th of June 2007 for mobile phones that supported Java Platform, Micro Edition. It was the series' first 2D side-scroller and the only entry that never reached a PlayStation. Kratos is framed for murder and rampages across Greece in search of the real killer. He succumbs to bloodlust and kills Ceryx, a son of the god Hermes, which alienates him from the other gods. Director Phil Cohen said the hardest task was creating one tileset and palette-swapping scheme that could portray many environments in only several hundred kilobytes. The game used 110 different animations. The porting team then adapted it to over 200 handsets in a matter of weeks.

Ghost of Sparta reached North America on the 2nd of November 2010. Haunted by visions of his mortal past, Kratos goes looking for his mother, Callisto. He learns that the gods took his brother Deimos and that Thanatos, the God of Death, holds him prisoner. Kratos frees his brother, but Thanatos attacks them and kills Deimos. Kratos kills Thanatos and returns to Olympus even angrier at the gods. Development took 23 months, and Dana Jan, lead level designer on Chains of Olympus, took over as director because Weerasuriya was unavailable. Jan said the game took the handheld to its "absolute capacity." It began as a teaser for players who earned the platinum trophy in God of War III, which revealed a website called spartansstandtall.com.

Sons of Sparta, a Metroidvania released on the 12th of February 2026 for the PlayStation 5, reaches back furthest of all. A 13-year-old Kratos trains at the Agoge in Sparta with his 11-year-old brother Deimos. Together they search Laconia for a missing Spartan comrade. An adult Kratos, a captain between deployments, narrates the tale to his daughter Calliope to teach her about duty. Mega Cat Studios built it with Santa Monica Studio. Its director, Zack Manko, said the team had always wanted to make a God of War game. Because Mega Cat specializes in retro titles, one early question was what the series would look like on the original PlayStation. To move 3D combat into 2D, they built a tool that turned animations from the older Greek games into 2D spreadsheets, and pixel artists drew over them.

  • On the 6th of December 2014, at the first annual PlayStation Experience, Cory Barlog confirmed that Santa Monica had begun work on a fifth main game. The official reveal came at E3 2016 with a gameplay demo. The studio gave it the plain title God of War, with no numeral or subtitle, because "we reimagined everything." Other mythologies were weighed, and so was a different protagonist. Norse legend won out to keep the focus on Kratos, who "is intrinsically tied" to the series.

The developers cut jumping, swimming and instant-death platforming challenges, because the camera now sat closer to Kratos. They also dropped the multiplayer that Ascension had introduced, so the team could concentrate on a single-player story. The Leviathan Axe became his main weapon because the developers wanted a more grounded direction. The game supports up to 100 enemies on screen, double the 50 that God of War III and Ascension could manage. Its story was estimated at 25-35 hours, against an average of about 10 for each of the previous four main games. It launched worldwide on the 20th of April 2018 for the PlayStation 4. A Windows version followed on the 14th of January 2022, the first main entry on a non-PlayStation platform.

In the story, Kratos has settled in Midgard, in ancient Norway, with a son named Atreus. His second wife, Faye, has died, and the two set out to scatter her ashes from the highest peak of the nine realms. The ally Mímir reveals that this peak lies in Jötunheim. The Æsir god Baldur attacks them on the orders of the Allfather Odin, who wants to reach Faye to prevent Ragnarök. Baldur does not know she is dead. Kratos kills him, which starts the three-year Fimbulwinter and sends Baldur's mother, the Vanir goddess Freya, after revenge. By the journey's end, they learn that Faye was a Giant who foresaw the future and that Atreus was originally named Loki.

God of War Ragnarök reached the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on the 9th of November 2022, the series' first cross-generation release. The COVID-19 pandemic partly affected development and pushed the game into 2022. Eric Williams, who had worked on every earlier installment, directed it, while Barlog served as creative director and producer. Odin and the God of Thunder, Thor, confront Kratos at the end of the Fimbulwinter. Freya, still vengeful, eventually makes amends. The heroes learn that Ragnarök would only destroy Asgard, so they unite the realms in a war against the Æsir. Odin kills Thor for refusing to kill Kratos, and Kratos and his allies then defeat Odin as Asgard falls. Atreus, as Loki, leaves to seek surviving Giants. Kratos learns he is destined to become a revered god.

Santa Monica ended the Norse era there because each of the two games took about five years, and the studio did not want to spend 15 on one story. A free expansion, Valhalla, arrived on the 12th of December 2023 as an epilogue. In its roguelite trials, Kratos makes peace with his Greek past and takes up the mantle of the Norse God of War. Barlog has said that future games could turn to Egyptian, Hindu, Chinese, Roman or Maya mythology.

  • Three versions of a pair of double-chained blades define Kratos in the Greek games: the Blades of Chaos, the Blades of Athena and the Blades of Exile. They perform alike but differ in combos, damage and appearance. Most weapons and magic are lost through a plot device between games, so each entry hands him a fresh arsenal. Ascension broke that pattern, giving players up to five limited-use World Weapons, such as a sword or a javelin, and a punch-and-kick fallback when none is equipped.

The Norse games swapped the fixed cinematic camera of the Greek era for a free over-the-shoulder view. The Leviathan Axe can be thrown and summoned back to his hand, much like Thor's hammer Mjölnir. Kratos later recovers the Blades of Chaos, and Ragnarök adds the Draupnir Spear. Each weapon can learn runic attacks, one light and one heavy. Atreus fires arrows from a bow on a dedicated button, and in some Ragnarök story missions the player controls him fully.

Kratos also has a rage ability that brings temporary invulnerability and extra damage. It was called Rage of the Gods in the original and in Ascension, Rage of the Titans in God of War II and Rage of Sparta in God of War III. Ghost of Sparta used Thera's Bane, which recharges automatically. The 2018 game introduced Spartan Rage, where Kratos pummels foes bare-handed. Ragnarök added two variants, one restoring health and one delivering a powerful weapon attack.

Colored orbs run the economy of the Greek games. Green orbs restore health, blue orbs restore magic, and red orbs provide experience points for upgrades. Gorgon Eyes extend the health meter and Phoenix Feathers extend magic. The Norse games replaced these with Apples of Iðunn, Horns of Blood Mead and a crafting currency called Hacksilver. Weakened enemies trigger quick-time finishers, and in the Norse games a prompt above the foe's head signals the moment.

Ascension was the first game with multiplayer, which was online-only and supported up to eight players. Players aligned with Zeus, Hades, Ares or Poseidon, each offering different weapons, armor and powers. Lead combat designer Jason McDonald said the idea began from curiosity. Testers played as Kratos, and their delight convinced the team the mode had value. Sons of Sparta brought multiplayer back as the offline Pit of Agonies challenge. A patch on the 26th of February 2026 lets players enter a cheat code to open it up early.

  • A film of the first game was announced in 2005. Jaffe said a completed script by David Self existed and that Universal Studios was behind the project. In July 2012, writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan were reported to be adapting it, with a budget of US$150 million. They told IGN they wanted to "humanize" Kratos and explore his past. In May 2021 a Sony spokesperson confirmed there was no film in development.

A television series fared better. On the 14th of December 2022, Amazon Prime Video officially ordered a live action God of War series, to premiere in more than 240 countries and territories. It adapts the Norse era, starting from the events of the 2018 game. The original writers and showrunner left, and Ronald D. Moore was brought on as writer, showrunner and executive producer. Ryan Hurst, who played Thor in Ragnarök, was cast as Kratos, and Callum Vinson as Atreus. Mandy Patinkin plays Odin and Ed Skrein plays Baldur. Production began on the 27th of February 2026.

A six-issue comic by Marv Wolfman and Andrea Sorrentino ran from March 2010 to January 2011. It follows Kratos' search for the Ambrosia of Asclepius, which once saved his plague-ridden daughter Calliope. Dark Horse later published two four-issue series by Chris Roberson and Tony Parker. One of them, Fallen God, traces Kratos from Greece through Egypt to Scandinavia. Novelizations of the first two games came from Matthew Stover, Robert E. Vardeman and, for the 2018 game, James Barlog, the father of Cory Barlog. CMON Limited released a card game on the 25th of October 2019, in which players act as the Norns to prevent Ragnarök.

Documentaries also dig into the games. Unearthing the Legend, hosted by Peter Weller, runs 75 minutes and examines the games' relationship to Greek mythology with historians. Game Directors Live gathered five directors in Los Angeles on the 1st of September 2010. Raising Kratos, released on YouTube on the 10th of May 2019, follows the five-year effort to revive the franchise.

  • Eight God of War soundtracks have been commercially released, and they involve composers such as Gerard K. Marino, Winifred Phillips, Tyler Bates and Bear McCreary. The 2005 score was praised for its orchestral themes and for its use of ancient and ethnic instruments. Tyler Bates scored Ascension alone, and reviewers called it powerful and pulsing but at times repetitive. For the 2018 game, Bear McCreary wrote entirely new music. He reinvented the Greek era's "deep choirs, pounding drums, and shrieking brass" with Nordic instruments, and the score won Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition at the 22nd Annual D.I.C.E. Awards. Faroese singer Eivør returned for Ragnarök, and Hozier sang "Blood Upon the Snow." McCreary's Sons of Sparta score blends chiptunes, ancient Greek instruments, a full symphony and a choir.

A heavy metal tribute also exists. God of War: Blood & Metal, released on the 2nd of March 2010 by bands on Roadrunner Records, included Trivium's "Shattering the Skies Above," which became a music video.

The 2005 game, the 2018 game and Ragnarök share the series' top Metacritic score of 94/100. Sons of Sparta drew mixed reviews and the lowest score, 64/100. Raymond Padilla of GameSpy called the original the "best action game ever to grace the PS2." It earned over a dozen Game of the Year awards.

Sony has revisited older entries repeatedly. Bluepoint Games ported the first two games to the PlayStation 3 in 2009, and God of War III Remastered marked the series' tenth anniversary in 2015. Not every project survived. On the 16th of January 2025, Bloomberg reported that Sony had canceled a live-service God of War from Bluepoint, which would have sent Atreus into the Greek Underworld. Sony hoped it could support multiple sequels and spinoffs, like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In February 2026, during Sony's State of Play presentation, Sony announced the God of War Trilogy Remake, a rebuild of the first three games that was then in early development.
