Baldur's Gate 3
Larian Studios began work on Baldur's Gate 3 in 2017, following a six-year development cycle that stretched until the game's full release in August 2023. The project started when Swen Vincke pitched the idea to Wizards of the Coast after their previous title Divinity: Original Sin II gained attention in 2017. Initial pitches were rejected because WotC felt Larian lacked experience with Dungeons & Dragons lore. A second pitch succeeded only after WotC changed leadership and reviewed new design documents. The studio grew from around 140 employees in 2017 to over 450 by 2023, becoming one of the largest privately owned video game companies globally. External pressures shaped this timeline significantly. The COVID-19 pandemic reduced productivity and caused internal communication issues throughout the production period. The Russian invasion of Ukraine forced Larian to close its Saint Petersburg office in early 2022. Ninety percent of staff relocated to other locations to avoid military enlistment or danger. This disruption affected the complex code base used for the entire game. Cinematics lead Jim Southworth died shortly after the game launched, prompting a dedication in the final credits. Vincke later described the project as his "Covid game" due to these compounding challenges.
Baldur's Gate 3 uses mechanics adapted directly from the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons tabletop rules. Outcomes for combat, dialogue, and world interactions depend on rolling a twenty-sided die known as a d20. Some rolls occur with advantage or disadvantage, meaning two dice are rolled and the player receives either the best or worst result respectively. Entering combat switches the game into turn-based mode where each character has limited resources like actions and bonus actions. A d4 roll called an initiative determines the order in which characters act during battle. Major instructions such as attacking with a sword consume one action while smaller commands like jumping use a bonus action. Characters can move a set distance before their turn ends when all available actions are exhausted. When a character attacks, the game rolls another d20 to determine if it hits the target's armor class. If the roll value is lower than the armor class, the attack misses entirely. Players see percentage chances that an attack will succeed before making it based on terrain factors. Damage types can amplify or counteract other effects depending on environmental conditions. Explosive barrels can be exploited to create water surfaces by melting ice with fire arrows. Weapons can be dipped in poison to alter damage output against enemies.
The protagonist wakes up inside a giant dimension-crossing illithid flying ship infected with a parasitic tadpole. This parasite enthralls and transforms people into mind flayers though the transformation does not occur immediately. The ship comes under attack from githyanki warriors riding red dragons shortly after waking. Mind flayer crew members teleport the damaged vessel to the Nine Hells where they face an army of Devils. The protagonist escapes during the fighting and steers the wrecked ship toward Faerûn until it crashes onto land. Other survivors emerge from the wreckage all implanted with similar tadpoles. The party seeks to remove these parasites through numerous avenues but every attempt fails to provide a cure. They are saved from the tadpoles' overwhelming psychic force by a Dream Visitor appearing inside Shadowheart's mysterious prism device. This prism is sought after by githyanki forces who want to control its power. The group travels to the Emerald Grove where druids and tiefling refugees fight off a goblin horde worshipping the Absolute cult. After deciding whether to sack or save the grove, players traverse mountains or the Underdark to reach Moonrise Towers in act two. There they confront General Ketheric Thorm using a Nightsong relic as an engine for immortality. The party scours the Gauntlet of Shar temple to find the Nightsong which turns out to be Dame Aylin daughter of Selûne. Orin the Red and Enver Gortash join Ketheric in controlling the Elder Brain known as the Absolute. These three villains manipulate everyone infected with a tadpole to rule the Sword Coast region.
Larian partially released an unfinished version of Baldur's Gate 3 into early access in October 2020 after revealing it at a Google Stadia conference in July 2019. The early access period attracted over 2.5 million players generating revenue that sustained the studio through development. Steam user reviews dropped below 75% during this phase prompting Vincke to call it a disaster despite positive feedback about fun gameplay elements. IGN PC Gamer and GameSpot reviewers described the game as rough messy and barely hanging together due to numerous bugs. Continuous rewriting required voice actors to return to studios repeatedly throughout the early access window. Full release for Windows occurred on the 3rd of August 2023 followed by PlayStation 5 on the 6th of September 2023 and macOS on the 22nd of September 2023. Xbox Series X and Series S versions launched later on the 7th of December 2023 following negotiations with Microsoft Games executive Phil Spencer. Performance variation between consoles created issues because feature parity was required for split-screen co-op play. A compromise allowed the game onto Xbox without split-screen functionality on Series S models. Post-launch patches added new content including customizations difficulty modes expanded epilogues and photo mode features. An eighth final patch arrived in April 2025 introducing cross-platform play and cooperative split-screen support.
