The Last of Us

8 sections
  • The Last of Us is a video game series from the studio Naughty Dog, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, and by early 2023 the franchise had sold more than 37 million games. It takes place in a United States ruined by a mutated fungus of the genus Cordyceps, which has turned many people into cannibalistic creatures. Two survivors anchor the story. Joel is a smuggler, and Ellie is a young girl whose body resists the infection. Players move through the ruins in third person, facing both the infected and hostile humans with firearms, improvised weapons, and stealth.

The series did not stay on game consoles. It became a comic book, a live reading on a stage, a television show, a haunted house, and a tabletop game. It also left behind films that were planned but never made, and an online game that was nearly finished before it was shelved. Behind that sprawl sit a few questions. Where did the idea come from? What did the sequel cost the people who built it? And why did one adaptation win major awards while others fell apart?

  • Preliminary work began under the codename Project Thing, also written T1, soon after Uncharted 2: Among Thieves came out in October 2009. Naughty Dog had never before run two projects at once. Now it split into two teams. One built Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, released in 2011, while the other started on the game that became The Last of Us. To keep both teams running smoothly, co-presidents Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra picked game director Bruce Straley and creative director Neil Druckmann to lead it.

Straley had worked at the studio since March 1999, and his record on earlier projects won him the job. Druckmann, at Naughty Dog since 2004, was chosen about a year into production for his determination and his talent for design.

The seed of the story goes back to Druckmann's university days. He imagined joining the gameplay of Ico, from 2001, to a zombie apocalypse in the manner of George A. Romero's 1968 film Night of the Living Dead. His lead would resemble John Hartigan from the comic series Sin City. That hero was a police officer charged with protecting a young girl. Because of the officer's heart condition, players would often end up controlling the girl instead, which reversed the roles.

Druckmann later developed that idea into the story of The Last of Us. He sees the finished game as a coming-of-age tale, in which Ellie learns to survive through her time with Joel. He also sees it as a study of how far a father will go to save his child.

The public first saw the game on the 10th of December 2011, when it was announced with a debut trailer at the Spike Video Game Awards. Journalists tied the wave of anticipation to Naughty Dog's reputation. The game missed its planned release of the 7th of May 2013 and moved to the 14th of June 2013 worldwide so the team could polish it. Retailers were also brought in to offer special editions with extra material, a push to encourage pre-orders. What players found at the end of that game, in Salt Lake City, is where the story itself begins.

  • Joel's daughter Sarah was lost during the outbreak of the Cordyceps fungus, and twenty years later he is given a job. He must escort Ellie, a teenage girl immune to the infection, across the ruined country. The group called the Fireflies hopes her immunity can lead to a cure. Along the way the pair grow closer through several traumatic events.

In Salt Lake City, Ellie is prepared for surgery that would kill her. Joel will not allow it. He fights his way to the operating room, kills the lead surgeon, and carries the unconscious Ellie to safety. When she wakes, he tells her that the attempts to make a cure had failed. That was a lie. The game reached the PlayStation 3, and a remaster, The Last of Us Remastered, followed for the PlayStation 4 in July 2014.

On the 14th of February 2014, Naughty Dog released Left Behind, a downloadable expansion for the PlayStation 3. A team about half the size of the original crew built it. Once the studio decided on single-player downloadable material, it settled quickly on Ellie as the focus. Players had shown curiosity about her life before the main game, especially about Riley Abel, whom Ellie mentions in the original. Others wondered about the stretch between the Fall and Winter chapters, when Ellie cares for an injured Joel.

The developers chose to set those two stretches against each other, believing it would help the pacing. The shorter schedule also let them test mechanics they had not been able to try in the main game. Straley said the team felt the story justified making Left Behind at all.

The story is set three weeks before the main game. Ellie spends time with her best friend Riley in an abandoned mall in Boston. Riley reveals she has been assigned to a group of Fireflies in a different city. Ellie tearfully begs her not to go. Riley agrees, rips off her Firefly pendant, and Ellie kisses her. Infected overrun them, and both girls are bitten. They briefly consider shooting themselves to stop the infection from taking over, but decide to spend their final hours together.

Left Behind was included in the PlayStation 4 remaster in 2014 and sold on its own for both consoles on the 12th of May 2015.

  • Four years after the first game ends, Abby Anderson tracks down Joel and kills him. She is taking revenge for her father, the head Firefly surgeon, whom Joel murdered. The Last of Us Part II follows what that act sets in motion. Ellie and her girlfriend Dina set out for Seattle to find Abby.

Over three days, Ellie kills several of Abby's friends. Abby, meanwhile, befriends Lev, who has been branded an apostate by the religious cult called the Seraphites for defying its traditions. When Abby discovers her friends dead, she hunts down Ellie and overpowers her, yet spares them at Lev's insistence.

Several months later, Ellie and Dina are living on a farm. Ellie sets out to find Abby again, this time in Santa Barbara, and finds Abby and Lev captured. She forces Abby to fight. Ellie wins, then has a change of heart and lets her live. Abby and Lev sail to the Fireflies. Ellie goes back to the farmhouse and finds it empty.

The sequel was announced at the PlayStation Experience event on the 3rd of December 2016. Early story ideas had formed while the first game was still in production, and full development started in 2014, soon after The Last of Us Remastered. By August 2017, when Uncharted: The Lost Legacy was released, the entire 350-person Naughty Dog team had moved onto Part II. Druckmann led as creative director and writer, and co-wrote the story with Halley Gross.

Straley left the studio in 2017. Anthony Newman and Kurt Margenau were chosen as co-game directors. Newman had been the melee combat designer on the first game, and Margenau had been game director on The Lost Legacy. They oversaw and approved gameplay elements such as level design and mechanics. In total, about 2,169 developers across 14 studios worked on the game.

The release date slipped from the 21st of February 2020 to May, and then to the 19th of June because of logistical problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In late April, several videos leaked online, showing cutscenes, gameplay, and major plot details. Druckmann tweeted that he was "heartbroken" for the fans and for a team that had spent years on the project.

A report by journalist Jason Schreier described a crunch schedule of 12-hour work days, which he tied to the studio's culture. After the delay, developers kept that schedule for the extra months. In the final stretch the team worked remotely because of the pandemic. Sony granted two more weeks for bug fixes. A remastered edition reached the PlayStation 5 in January 2024 and Windows in April 2025.

  • In April 2021, Schreier reported the existence of The Last of Us Part I, a remake of the original game. Naughty Dog announced it in June 2022 at Summer Game Fest. It reached the PlayStation 5 on the 2nd of September 2022 and Windows on the 28th of March 2023. The remake brought revised gameplay, overhauled artificial intelligence, improved performance, and expanded accessibility options.

Matthew Gallant served as game director and Shaun Escayg as creative director. Gallant had been a combat designer on the original game and on Uncharted 4: A Thief's End from 2016, then lead systems designer on Part II, where he co-led the accessibility features. Escayg had been lead cinematic animator on the original, his first game, before directing at Crystal Dynamics and returning to Naughty Dog in April 2021. He took charge of the cinematics. Gallant found the themes struck him harder now that he had become a father.

Escayg called the remake "a love letter to our fans, to the franchise, and to ourselves as developers". The team felt a duty to preserve the original's essence and quality.

An online multiplayer mode had been in development for Part II, confirmed in June 2018. In September 2019, Naughty Dog confirmed that the mode would not ship with the single-player campaign, and said multiplayer work was continuing separately. After the release of Part II, the company increased its multiplayer job openings.

At Summer Game Fest in June 2022, Druckmann confirmed a standalone release and showed the first concept art. He said it was "as big" as Naughty Dog's single-player games, with new characters and a different American location, which fans suspected was San Francisco. Newman and Vinit Agarwal led development as co-game directors, with Joseph Pettinati as narrative lead.

Production was scaled back in May 2023 while Sony reassessed its direction, and many developers moved to other projects. Bungie evaluated the game at Sony's request and questioned whether it could keep players engaged. Naughty Dog also saw that it could not sustain a live service game while making Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. After layoffs in October, the studio canceled The Last of Us Online in December. It said the game's scale would have pulled resources toward post-launch support instead of future single-player games. According to Agarwal, it was around 80 percent complete after seven years.

A third main game has stayed uncertain. By April 2021, Druckmann and Gross had written an outline for a story set after Part II. Druckmann later described it as a small story about Tommy, not a full sequel, and thought it might become a game or a television series. In January 2023 he said "there's more story to tell", and in April he confirmed a concept for a third game, saying there was "probably one more chapter to this story".

In March 2025 he cautioned fans not to "bet on there being more of Last of Us", since the television series "could be it". The Last of Us Complete, a bundle of Part I and Part II Remastered, arrived digitally on the 10th of April 2025. A physical collector's edition followed on the 10th of July, with a SteelBook case, art prints, and the American Dreams comic. Then in March 2026, Druckmann spoke of a "few stops that remain on the road ahead", which some read as a hint of a sequel.

  • On the review aggregator Metacritic, the first game earned "universal acclaim" and ranks as the seventh-highest-rated PlayStation 3 game. Its remastered edition is the fourth-highest-rated PlayStation 4 game. The game appeared on several lists of 2013's best and took top honors at the Annie Awards, the British Academy Video Games Awards, the D.I.C.E. Awards, and the Game Developers Choice Awards.

Part II earned the same phrase and ranks sixth among PlayStation 4 games, while its PlayStation 5 remaster ranks eleventh on that console. It won more than 320 Game of the Year awards, which several outlets called a record. Left Behind and the PlayStation 5 version of Part I were rated "generally favorable". The Windows version of Part I became Naughty Dog's lowest-rated game, with "mixed or average" reviews, and critics faulted its optimization, system requirements, and performance.

Critics kept returning to the writing. IGN's Colin Moriarty named the story a standout of the first game, and David Meikleham of PlayStation Official Magazine said the pacing deepened its impact. Part II divided opinion more. Game Informer's Andy McNamara felt the writers conveyed the themes "with careful nuance and unflinching emotion". GamesRadar+'s Alex Avard thought the narrative lost momentum by trying to finalize every story thread. Polygon's Maddy Myers and Kotaku's Riley MacLeod argued that the game delivered its themes repeatedly without giving the player any agency. Druckmann won several awards for his writing, including two from the D.I.C.E. Awards.

The characters drew equal attention. Game Informer's Matt Helgeson found the bond between Joel and Ellie identifiable and poignant, and Meikleham considered them the best characters of any PlayStation 3 game. For The Last of Us, Troy Baker won Best Voice Actor at Spike VGX and Ashley Johnson won the D.I.C.E. Award for Outstanding Character Performance. Johnson won two consecutive British Academy Games Awards for Performer, for the first game and for Left Behind. She was nominated again for Part II but lost to Laura Bailey, who played Abby. Bailey then beat Johnson for Best Performance at the Game Awards 2020.

Reviewers treated each entry as a showcase for its console. Eurogamer's Oli Welsh called the first game's art design "jaw-dropping", and he judged its sound design far better than in other games. Vice's Rob Zacny said the audio of Part II made settings feel more lifelike than the visuals sometimes managed. Gustavo Santaolalla's score for both games was called "haunting" by some reviewers. Part II won the inaugural Innovation in Accessibility award at The Game Awards 2020.

The series also drew attention for its characters. Eurogamer's Ellie Gibson praised Ellie as "sometimes strong, sometimes vulnerable, but never a cliché". The advocacy group GLAAD named Bill, a character in the first game, one of the year's "most intriguing new LGBT characters". Kotaku's Kirk Hamilton called the kiss between Ellie and Riley in Left Behind a "breakthrough moment".

Some members of the transgender community objected to how Part II portrays Lev. Criticism focused on villains using his dead name, on the character being created by cisgender writers, and on the use of trans stories as tragedies. In reply, VG247's Stacey Henly noted that his dead name is used sparingly. Ian Alexander, a transgender actor, provided Lev's voice and motion capture. Paste's reviewer praised that casting but felt too much emphasis fell on Lev's gender identity and suffering.

Sales matched the praise. The first game sold over 1.3 million units in seven days and 3.4 million in three weeks, the biggest launch of an original game since 2011's L.A. Noire. It was the tenth-best-selling game of 2013, and by April 2018 the original and Remastered together had sold 17 million copies. Part II sold over four million copies worldwide in its release weekend, the fastest for a PlayStation 4 exclusive. It beat Marvel's Spider-Man at 3.3 million and God of War at 3.1 million. By June 2022 it had passed ten million. Those numbers are what the franchise's backers pointed to when the series moved beyond games.

  • On the 6th of March 2014, Sony announced that Screen Gems would distribute a film of The Last of Us, written by Druckmann and produced by Sam Raimi. By January 2015, Druckmann had finished a second draft and held a read-through with some actors. Maisie Williams expressed enthusiasm for playing Ellie and was in talks with both men, while Kaitlyn Dever took part in a table read.

Then the project stalled. In April 2016, Druckmann said the film had entered development hell, and that November Raimi called it a standstill after Sony disagreed with Druckmann. The rights had been relinquished by 2019. Druckmann said the studio wanted big action set pieces, while he felt the story worked better as a smaller indie film.

In January 2020, images surfaced of a 20-minute animated short by the production agency Oddfellows. It was meant to "serve as a strong bridge" between the game and its sequel, and to "reinterpret each of the chapters of the game with a unique visual treatment". Sony canceled it. Druckmann said in 2023 that he had written a short story about Ellie's mother after the first game, planned as an animated short. It "fell apart", but was later incorporated into the television adaptation.

HBO announced in March 2020 that a television version was in the planning stages, and formally greenlit it in November 2020. Druckmann and Craig Mazin wrote and executive produced the series, and both directed episodes. It is the first show produced by PlayStation Productions. Santaolalla and David Fleming compose the score.

Pedro Pascal plays Joel and Bella Ramsey plays Ellie, with Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Merle Dandridge reprising Marlene, and Anna Torv as Tess. Druckmann said some scripts borrow dialogue directly from the game, while others deviate. At HBO's encouragement, some action-heavy sequences were reshaped into character drama.

Filming of the first season ran in Alberta, Canada, from July 2021 to June 2022, and it debuted on HBO and HBO Max on the 15th of January 2023. On the 27th of January, less than two weeks after the premiere, HBO renewed it for a second season. That season was filmed in British Columbia from February to August 2024 and premiered in April 2025, with Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, and Dever as Abby. HBO renewed the series for a third season on the 9th of April 2025, and Druckmann stepped away from creative duties that July.

The show holds an average approval rating of 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a weighted score of 83 out of 100 on Metacritic. Several reviewers called it the best video game adaptation, and critics singled out the chemistry of Pascal and Ramsey. Some thought the scenes lifted directly from the game were the weakest. The second season was praised for deeper themes and more complex characters, though some found its pace too quick and its narrative unsatisfyingly incomplete.

It is the first live-action video game adaptation to receive major awards consideration. The first season earned 24 nominations at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, with a leading eight wins at the Creative Arts Emmys. The second season earned 17 nominations at the 77th Primetime Emmys. The series also won a Peabody Award for Entertainment and led the MTV Movie and TV Awards with three wins, including Best Show.

  • From April to July 2013, Dark Horse Comics published The Last of Us: American Dreams, a four-issue miniseries. Druckmann wrote it and Faith Erin Hicks illustrated it. It serves as a prequel, chronicling the journey of a younger Ellie and Riley.

On the 28th of July 2014 in Santa Monica, California, the game's cast performed a live reading of selected scenes. Santaolalla played live music. Druckmann hosted and directed the evening, with graphics by Alex Hobbs.

To mark the first game's tenth anniversary in 2023, Universal opened a haunted house as part of Halloween Horror Nights. It ran at Universal Orlando from the 1st of September and at Universal Studios Hollywood from the 7th of September, ending on the 31st of October. Guests walked through the Pittsburgh Quarantine Zone beside other survivors, Joel, and Ellie, and met infected, raiders, and hunters. Several elements came straight from the game, such as Ish's notes. John Murdy in Hollywood and Michael Aiello in Orlando led their teams as creative directors.

Druckmann raised the idea in a meeting in December 2021, after fans tagged both Halloween Horror Nights and Naughty Dog on Twitter. Instead of a montage-like house, he wanted one centered on Joel and Ellie's story, and he chose Pittsburgh for its environmental variety and narrative completeness. The pitch deck consisted of screenshots from the game. He invited Baker and Johnson to return as Joel and Ellie with new dialogue, since he did not want sound-alikes. They agreed, citing their fondness for the event. The Universal team added lines to the script, which Druckmann rewrote in the characters' voices, and Murdy directed the performances.

Tabletop games followed. In September 2020, the company CMON announced a game focused on exploration, narrative, and survival, but it never received another update. A different game, The Last of Us: Escape the Dark, was announced in November 2022 by Naughty Dog and Themeborne. It lets up to five players try to reach safety from enemies while exploring locations from the game. Asmodee released it in the United States on the 29th of November 2024.

In January 2025, Druckmann announced a physical experience set in Seattle during the events of Part II. Visitors fight the infected with virtual weapons, immersive video, audio, and scent technologies. It was first exhibited at the Consumer Electronics Show.

On the 16th of December 2025, Dark Horse Books published a 618-page hardcover with the scripts for The Last of Us, Left Behind, and Part II. Troy Baker, the actor behind Joel, wrote the foreword, and principal character concept artist Hyoung Nam supplied the art.
