  • Pedro Pascal was nine months old when his family fled Chile, after six months of sheltering inside the Venezuelan embassy in Santiago. Both of his parents had been listed as enemies of the state by the regime of General Augusto Pinochet. That infant grew up to be an actor with two nationalities, Chilean and American. In 2023, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Yet his success came late and slowly. How does a child of exiles spend nearly two decades in small roles before the wider world notices him? Which parts finally changed that? And why do audiences, and the internet, feel so strongly about the characters he plays?

  • José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal was born on the 2nd of April 1975 in Santiago. Two years earlier, Pinochet had toppled the elected socialist government of President Salvador Allende. His mother, Verónica Pascal Ureta, was a child psychologist. His father, José Balmaceda Riera, was a reproductive endocrinologist. Pascal has an older sister, the film and television producer Javiera Balmaceda, plus a younger sister, the actress Lux, and a younger brother.

Allende is more than a name from the history books for this family. Pascal is the great-nephew of Laura Allende, a politician and the sister of the president. His second cousin Andrés Pascal Allende is a sociologist who once served as Secretary General of the Movement of the Revolutionary Left. Another second cousin, Denise Pascal, is a Socialist Party politician. The family tree also reaches into the aristocratic Alessandri, Allende, and Balmaceda families, and Pascal is the seventh great-grandson of Mateo de Toro Zambrano. His paternal grandmother, Juanita Riera Bauzá, was born in Palma de Mallorca. Her brother was Fernando Riera, a professional football player and coach.

Denmark granted the family political asylum, and they then settled in the United States. Pascal grew up in San Antonio, Texas, until the family moved to Orange County, California, when he was eleven. Even so, from about the age of eight he regularly visited Chile to see his 34 cousins.

Pascal studied acting at the Orange County School of the Arts, graduating in 1993. He then attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, graduating in 1997. In 1995, his parents returned to Chile. His father, Dr. José P. Balmaceda, had been accused of taking fertility patients' eggs and embryos and implanting them in other women without their knowledge or consent. His mother, Verónica, died in 2000, and her death would change which name appeared on his credits.

  • Balmaceda, his father's surname, was a name Pascal felt people in the United States struggled to pronounce. After his mother died, he began using her surname, Pascal, professionally. He has described the choice as a tribute to her as well as a practical one.

Between 1999 and 2013, Pascal assembled a long list of small television parts. He appeared in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, NYPD Blue, The Good Wife, Nurse Jackie, and Homeland. The pay stayed thin, so he also waited tables. He has admitted that he was fired "often, upwards of, I don't know, maybe close to 10 times".

Sarah Paulson, whom he befriended soon after moving to New York City in 1993, helped him through the hardest stretch. She gave him her per diem money "so that he could have money to feed himself." At one low point he could not afford medical care and had less than seven dollars in his bank account. A residual check from his Buffy role arrived, steadied his finances, and let him keep acting.

Pascal joined New York City's LAByrinth Theater Company and worked in both classical and contemporary plays. He won the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award and the Garland Award for the International City Theater production of Orphans. In 2005 he made his feature film debut in Sisters, directed by Julia Solomonoff. She needed someone with strong English and found in him "someone with a very special face, very photogenic, with a kind of mystery".

In 2010, Pascal wrote Flaca Loves Bone, a play directed by Sarah Silverman about four siblings who meet in a snowy wood to uncover a family secret. That same year he made his directing debut with Killing Play, written by David Anzuelo, at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater. He also directed underneathmybed and Yosemite there. In 2011 he was cast as Ed Indelicato, Wonder Woman's liaison to the LAPD, in a television pilot, but the show was not picked up. That pilot never reached audiences, and the part that finally did arrived three years later, on HBO.

  • Season four of HBO's Game of Thrones aired from the 6th of April to the 15th of June 2014. Pascal played Oberyn Martell, the passionate and vengeful Dornish prince. He has said he was a huge fan of the show before he was cast and was ecstatic to join. Publications including CNET, The Mary Sue, Time, and Esquire ranked Martell among the best characters in the series. The Los Angeles Times called him a sex symbol in the role and described it as "the real tipping point in his career". As part of the ensemble, he received a Screen Actors Guild nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

In August 2015, Pascal appeared as Javier Peña in the Netflix crime series Narcos. Peña is based on a real-life DEA agent. The first two seasons follow the rise and fall of the drug lord Pablo Escobar and the Medellín Cartel. In the third and final season the focus moved to the Cali Cartel, and Pascal became both the lead actor and the narrator. The series ran from 2015 to 2017.

April 2015 had already given him two smaller credits. He co-starred with Heidi Klum in the music video for Sia's "Fire Meet Gasoline". He also played the vampire Max in the comedy Bloodsucking Bastards.

  • Qingdao, China, hosted the filming of The Great Wall in 2016, with Pascal as the mercenary Pero Tovar beside Matt Damon. Zhang Yimou directed the fantasy action film. It follows European mercenaries who are caught up in a battle against ancient creatures that threaten humanity. The production was visually striking and ambitious, but reviews were mixed on its story and characters. Pascal has said he admires Zhang, whose work he followed in his youth.

In 2017, Matthew Vaughn cast Pascal as Jack Daniels, known as Agent Whiskey, in Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Agent Whiskey is a charismatic and skilled operative in the Statesman organization. Chris Sasaguay of Collider called him "one cool cowboy" with a "genuine love for getting into a cutthroat brawl". Sasaguay also praised the playful side that comes so easily to Pascal.

Denzel Washington was his opponent in 2018. Pascal played Dave York, the main antagonist of the thriller sequel The Equalizer 2. That year he also made a cameo in Barry Jenkins's If Beale Street Could Talk, based on James Baldwin's 1974 novel. His character, Pietro Alvarez, is frivolous but crucial, and he ultimately reveals a compassionate and empathetic side.

Prospect, also from 2018, cast Pascal as Ezra, a seasoned and enigmatic prospector on a dangerous alien moon. CNET's Monisha Ravisetti was "delightfully surprised when Pedro Pascal showed up in a burnt orange spacesuit". Dais Johnston of Inverse later linked the role to his future characters in The Mandalorian and The Last of Us. Johnston wrote, "Pedro Pascal plays a gruff man who only looks out for himself until a child softens his heart".

  • The Mandalorian debuted on Disney+ in 2019 as the first live-action Star Wars television series. Pascal played the title role, Din Djarin, a lone bounty hunter in the outer reaches of the galaxy. The part brought him much wider recognition and later helped establish his reputation for playing fathers. The series ran from 2019 to 2023.

Triple Frontier arrived the same year on Netflix. Pascal played Francisco "Catfish" Morales, a helicopter pilot in a heist drama. His co-star Oscar Isaac was already a close friend. The two had met in 2005, in an off-Broadway production of Beauty of the Father.

The Last of Us premiered on HBO in 2023, adapted from the 2013 video game by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. Pascal played Joel Miller, a hardened survivor in a post-apocalyptic world who is tasked with protecting a young girl named Ellie. Bella Ramsey played Ellie. Pascal reportedly received $600,000 per episode. John Nugent of Empire and Valerie Ettenhofer of /Film called his work the best of his career, citing his nuance and rare vulnerability. Druckmann described the chemistry between Ramsey and Pascal as "a joy." The performance earned him a SAG Award for Outstanding Male Actor in a Drama Series, among many honors.

Joel's bond with Ellie, echoing Din Djarin's story, earned Pascal international recognition for playing adoptive father figures. The surge in popularity led internet culture to dub him "daddy". During filming he became close friends with Ramsey. He calls the two of them "linked souls".

  • Wonder Woman 1984 placed Pascal in the DC Extended Universe in 2020 as Maxwell Lord, under director Patty Jenkins. Delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic pushed it to theaters and HBO Max in December 2020. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian called the character "a version of Norman Vincent Peale, the positive-thinking guru who was such an influence on presidents Nixon and Trump". The New York Times and the BBC both thought Pascal was miscast. In the film We Can Be Heroes, he played Marcus Moreno, a loving father in a children's movie, according to Screen Rant.

In early 2021, a video from a 2020 virtual play reading of I, My Ruination spread across social media. Pascal laughs hysterically and then slides smoothly into crying. It became a meme, often paired with Beach House's song "Space Song" to suggest tragedy.

Nicolas Cage was his co-star in the 2022 action comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and critics widely praised Pascal's performance. In one scene his character grins at a gruff, irritated Cage while driving under the influence of LSD. That scene became a TikTok meme. People pair it with Mama Cass's 1969 song "Make Your Own Kind of Music" when two sides clash over a topic in an exaggeratedly emotional way.

Judd Apatow's The Bubble, a satire of celebrity culture during the pandemic, also featured Pascal in 2022. Luke Y. Thompson of The A.V. Club called his character, Dieter Bravo, a "womanizer". Pascal also starred in House Comes With a Bird, a short film for Miu Miu's Women's Tales series, directed by Janicza Bravo. In November 2022, he signed with Creative Artists Agency.

Memes of him multiplied after The Last of Us. One clip shows Pascal eating a sandwich on LADbible's Snack Wars YouTube series, alongside The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau. Others come from the episode "Kin". They include a scene in which Joel has a panic attack, and shots of him leaning on furniture because his character is in constant fear.

In February 2023, Pascal hosted Saturday Night Live, with Coldplay as the musical guest. In May he co-starred with Ethan Hawke in Pedro Almodóvar's short film Strange Way of Life. He played Silva, who reunites with Hawke's Jake in their older age. Pascal had long said he admired Almodóvar and wanted to work with him. Screen Rant counted it as another role in the "dad" archetype. In June, the Carnegie Corporation of New York named him an honoree of its Great Immigrants Award.

In July 2023, Pascal became the first Latino to earn three nominations in one year at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. They were Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for The Last of Us, Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for Saturday Night Live, and Outstanding Narrator for Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World. The Last of Us nomination was for the episode "Kin", the same one that fed so many of those memes.

  • In January 2024, Pascal starred in Freaky Tales, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. In June, Omar Apollo released his second studio album, God Said No. Its penultimate track, "Pedro", features a monologue from Pascal about his heart being "shattered by something". In the animated film The Wild Robot, he voiced Fink, a fox who plays a parental role to a goose named Brightbill, alongside Lupita Nyong'o's robot Roz. He also starred in Gladiator II, the sequel to Ridley Scott's 2000 film Gladiator. At the end of 2024, he was polled as Grindr's hottest man of the year. A packed schedule forced him to drop out of several high-profile films, including Weapons and Crime 101.

"I just know that personal relationships are such a complex thing to navigate even without having this enormous lens on them." That is how Pascal explains why he keeps his romantic life private. He has never publicly confirmed any romantic relationship.

Lux Pascal, his sister, came out as transgender, and she has said of her brother, "He has been an important part of this. He is also an artist and has been a guide. He was one of the first to give me the things that formed my identity." Pascal describes his protective side as "lethal" when discussing her. He identifies as an agnostic and a progressive liberal and advocates for LGBTQ+ rights. In April 2025, he attended the London premiere of Marvel's Thunderbolts* wearing a "Protect the Dolls" t-shirt by designer Conner Ives. "Dolls" is a term often used to refer to transgender women. Shortly afterward, he called author J. K. Rowling a "heinous loser" in an Instagram comment. She had celebrated the For Women Scotland Ltd v The Scottish Ministers ruling, which allowed for the exclusion of trans women from "single-sex services for women".

On Christmas Eve 2023, Pascal called for a ceasefire in the Gaza war and urged donations to Doctors Without Borders. On the 1st of March 2025, he posted on Instagram in support of Ukraine after public criticisms of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy by President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance. He wrote, "Stay on the right side of history. Glory to Ukraine". In May 2025, he signed an open letter criticizing the film industry's "passivity" over the war in Gaza.

On the 10th of January 2026, Pascal and the American-Palestinian model Bella Hadid hosted an Artists for Aid benefit concert at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles. It supported humanitarian relief in Palestine and Sudan. The Sudanese-Canadian musician Mustafa organized it, and performers included Omar Apollo, Clairo, Snoh Aalegra, and Shawn Mendes. Proceeds were split between the Sudanese American Physicians Association and the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund.

In 2025, Pascal appeared in Celine Song's romantic comedy Materialists and Ari Aster's neo-Western thriller Eddington. He also played Reed Richards, Mister Fantastic, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Two upcoming projects owe him their survival. His casting in late 2025 helped revive Todd Haynes's film De Noche after it had stalled. He also took the lead role of Alex Serian in Tony Gilroy's thriller Behemoth!. Both were close to being abandoned after their initial stars backed out. His calendar includes The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026 and Avengers: Doomsday in 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars, slated for 2027, is the furthest date on it.
