  • Marvel Rivals reached 10 million players within 72 hours of its release on the 6th of December 2024. NetEase Games built this free-to-play hero shooter in collaboration with Marvel Games, and it draws its fighters from Marvel Comics. A hero shooter is a team game in which every player picks a character with a distinct set of powers. The game launched on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S, with cross-play linking every supported platform. Several questions run through this documentary. What story holds so many corners of the multiverse on one battlefield? How do dozens of comic book characters become playable roles that feel different from each other? Who built the game, and what went wrong along the way? And how did it find such a large audience so quickly?

  • Two versions of Doctor Doom sit at the heart of the story, and they do not get along. The game opens with a hostile meeting between Doom and his heroic counterpart from 2099. That meeting causes what the game calls a "timestream entanglement". New worlds are created as a result, and heroes and villains from across the multiverse begin fighting one another. Their shared goal is to defeat both Doom variants before one of them claims victory over those new worlds.

Season 0, titled Dooms' Rise, was a shortened season made for the launch. Season 1, Eternal Night Falls, followed with a vampiric invasion of New York City. It draws on the Blood Hunt comics storyline from 2024. Season 2, Hellfire Gala, centers on Ultron's attack on Krakoa and borrows from the Hellfire Gala event of the Krakoan Age.

Season 3, The Abyss Awakens, shows Knull and Hela taking over the galaxy. It is adapted from the King in Black storyline of 2021. Season 4, The Heart of the Dragon, turns to the Immortal Weapons. Shou-Lao invokes a tournament among them to stop Doom from claiming his chi. The source is the Tournament of Heaven storyline from The Immortal Iron Fist, a comics series that began in 2006.

Season 5, Love is a Battlefield, follows Gambit as he strikes a deal with the Grandmaster and steals a contract from the Collector. It comes from the Mr. & Mrs. X comics series of 2018. Season 6, Night at the Museum, has Deadpool betray the Collector and plunge his Museum into chaos. That arc is based on the King of the Monsters storyline from the Deadpool series of 2019.

Season 7, The Hunt is On, follows Wilson Fisk as he pursues anti-superhero mayoral efforts to save New York from a multiversal invasion by Alchemax. It adapts the Devil's Reign storyline of 2021. Season 8, Sins of Alchemax, continues that invasion and adds an Alchemax Headquarters map, so the plot now has playable ground.

  • Guangyun Chen, the game's creative director, describes a research habit behind every character. His team likes to "dive really deep into the background and personality" of each Marvel hero. Chen says every skill set is crafted to "reflect who these heroes really are in the comics." He also wants both fan favourites and lesser known characters on the roster.

Fifty-one playable characters have been officially announced, and 50 can be played today. Each belongs to one of three roles. Vanguards work like tanks. Duelists are designed to deal maximum damage and secure kills. Strategists support teammates through healing, buffs, and other utility abilities. Every character has active and passive abilities, a basic primary attack, and a unique ultimate. The ultimate needs a charge meter to fill, either passively over time or through combat.

Deadpool is the one name that appears on all three role lists. He arrived in Season 6 on the 16th of January 2026.

The idea unique to Rivals is the Team-up. If Wolverine shares a team with the Hulk or the Thing, that teammate can throw him at foes in a move called the Fastball Special. The game also skips role queue, a system that would force a set blend of heroes onto each team. Chen said this was "to offer a wider variety of team composition". It also lets players use team-up abilities without restrictions.

The launch roster on the 6th of December 2024 included Thor, Captain America, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Loki, and Jeff the Land Shark. Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman joined in Season 1 on the 10th of January 2025. The Human Torch and the Thing followed on the 21st of February 2025.

Skins reach beyond the comics. Many characters carry original skins plus unlockable or purchasable looks based on alternate comic versions, Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances, or other video games such as Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Marvel Cosmic Invasion. Cyclops is next, scheduled for Season 8.5.

  • Twenty-one unique maps are active in Marvel Rivals, and matches play out as 6v6 fights in third person. Environments are destructible, so players can reshape the battlefield, which is overseen by Galacta. The game lists seven modes.

Convoy gives one team offense and the other defense at random. Offense escorts a moving object across the map, and defense must stop it by capturing it. The object moves forward on its own while offense holds it and backward while defense holds it. Only offense can speed it up, by standing near it. It stays still whenever a member of the opposing team is close. Maps include Yggsgard: Yggdrasil Path and Tokyo 2099: Spider-Islands.

Domination sends both teams after a single zone at a time. Once a zone is captured, the defending team gradually gains points until it reaches 100%. A team that captures two zones wins. Convergence adds a starting checkpoint that offense must secure before the match shifts into Convoy rules. K'un-Lun: Heart of Heaven is one of its maps.

Resource Rumble is available only in custom matches, on the Klyntar: Throne of Knull map. Teams fight over zones of resources, and emptying a zone opens the next one. Taking all the resources from two zones wins the match. Conquest sets two teams against each other, and fallen heroes drop points that either side can pick up. The first team to 50 points, or the leader when the timer runs out, wins.

Doom Match is a free-for-all for up to 12 players on the Sanctum Sanctorum map. The match ends when someone reaches 16 Final Hits, and the top half of the players are declared winners. The largest mode is 18 vs. 18 Annihilation on the Grand Garden map. Its 36 players have no hero duplicate restrictions, and the target score is 120 within 6 minutes. It can be played against other people or against AI.

Quick Match and Practice Vs. AI offer Domination, Convoy, and Convergence without ranks. Competitive play opens at Level 15 and has nine ranks, each with three tiers. Placement matches at the start of each season, plus a projected rank based on past performance, set a player's starting rank. From Gold rank upward, players can ban three heroes per team. Final rank earns cosmetic rewards at season's end.

Tournament matches require at least Platinum rank and membership in a Faction. They run as best of three or best of five. Each team has three bans that apply only to its opponent, plus two protect slots that shield heroes from being banned.

The arcade hub holds the casual modes: Doom Match, Conquest, and Free Fight. Free Fight allows duplicate heroes and borrows the Competitive ban system to compensate. Clone Rumble, Giant-Sized Brain Blast, and Conquest (Annihilation) left the hub in the Winter update of the 18th of December 2025. Limited-time modes have included Jeff's Winter Splash Festival, Clash of Dancing Lions, Giant-Sized Hive Mind, and Ultron's Battle Matrix Protocol.

  • Season 3 changed the rhythm of the game. Seasons were first planned to last three months, split into two halves, with each half bringing new additions and at least one new hero. From Season 3 onward, seasons last two months but are still split in halves. The result is a new hero roughly every month.

Each season sells a battle pass full of cosmetic items such as character skins, emotes, sprays, and player banners. Players can buy these items with Chrono Tokens, a currency earned by playing matches and finishing daily, weekly, and seasonal challenges. A battle pass, once purchased, never expires.

A second currency called Lattice is premium. It comes from Achievement rewards, events, the Battle Pass, or real-world money, and it pays for other cosmetics in the in-game store.

Short events follow holidays and seasons. The first Winter Celebration ran from December 2024 into January 2025. It featured a 4v4 mode similar to Splatoon, where players used Jeff the Land Shark's spit attack to cover the most area of a map in their team's colour. Events like this can add limited-time modes and themed cosmetics for completing challenges.

Planning for each season starts well before it ships. The developers first choose a theme and decide which new experiences they want players to have. That choice guides which heroes fit best. They then consider new gameplay and the maps to match it, and the whole process happens inside the Guangzhou team.

  • Guangzhou is home to the NetEase Games team that builds Marvel Rivals, led by lead producer Weicong Wu and creative director Guangyun Chen. NetEase is mainly responsible for the design and development of gameplay. Marvel Games holds a supervisory role, making sure everything fits the tone of the Marvel brand and its intellectual property. The game runs on Unreal Engine 5. Marvel Games senior producer Danny Koo describes its look as a blend of Eastern and Western art styles.

Marvel Games announced the game with a trailer on the 27th of March 2024. A closed alpha test open to the public ran for ten days, from the 10th to the 20th of May 2024. Players could earn permanent rewards that carried over to the final release. These included an exclusive alpha tester title and a Scarlet Witch skin, both earned through the test's own battle pass. Placing in the Top 32 of the alpha tournament earned the "Dawn of Legends" title. Playing with or against a game developer earned a spray.

The alpha also brought trouble. Streamer Brandon Larned called out NetEase on social media over a non-disparagement clause in the contract given to creators with alpha access. The clause barred reviews from saying anything negative about the game. NetEase apologized and said it would revise the contract to be more creator-friendly.

A closed beta followed from the 23rd of July to the 5th of August 2024, on both consoles and PC. The game had first been planned for Windows through Steam and Epic Games. Sony's State of Play in May revealed the console versions alongside the beta. On the 16th of November 2024, NetEase confirmed English, Japanese, or Mandarin voice-overs at launch. The launch trailer arrived on the 30th of November 2024, less than a week before release, and showed five new playable heroes.

Thaddeus Sasser, a director on NetEase's Seattle-based design team, later explained the success. He pointed to a switching cost: players invested in one game are less willing to move to another. He contrasted Rivals with Concord, a hero shooter that failed commercially the same year. He blamed that failure on Concord not offering unique value to overcome the cost.

In February 2025, NetEase laid off the Seattle design team, Sasser included. It reportedly comprised six people. Kotaku reported that the size and location of the teams behind the game were hard to pin down. NetEase said it had made "the difficult decision to adjust Marvel Rivals' development team structure" and that the Guangzhou core team was continuing the work.

The team had no initial plans for a player versus environment mode. It later announced Marvel Zombies, inspired by the animated series of the same name, as the game's first PvE mode. A second PvE mode, Blood Hunt, took its inspiration from the comic book crossover and arrived on the 23rd of April 2026.

The PlayStation 4 version arrived on the 12th of September 2025, alongside the start of Season 4. It runs at 30 frames per second at 1080p on base consoles. The PlayStation 4 Pro version runs at 1440p and 60 frames per second. In March 2026, Danny Koo confirmed that a Nintendo Switch 2 version is in development.

  • By the 17th of December 2024, the player base had passed 20 million. During its first month the game peaked at more than 480,000 concurrent players, and most of that count stayed on Steam. GameLook, a Chinese video game industry research outlet, estimated about US$135 million in revenue across all platforms in that period. On the Newzoo chart, the game ranked 6th by revenue for December in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy. Microsoft also listed it among the Xbox games with the highest single-day active user counts of the year.

Season 1 launched in January 2025, and Steam saw a new peak of 644,269 concurrent players. That made it the 14th highest-ranking game of all time on the platform by this measure. It rose to 5th on the Newzoo revenue chart. By February 2025, NetEase reported more than 40 million players worldwide.

Sony reported that Marvel Rivals was the 3rd most downloaded free-to-play title on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in the United States and Canada during 2025. In Europe it ranked 6th. Valve placed it among the 12 best-selling titles on Steam through 2025. At the PlayStation Partner Awards 2025, it received a Grand Award as one of "the top five titles developed in the Japan / Asia regions with the highest worldwide sales" between October 2024 and September 2025.

The curve has not been flat. Season 4 hit a low of 132,000 concurrent players, and Season 5 launched with a peak of 160,000. Season 6 in January 2026 brought more than 200,000.

Critics were divided by platform. Metacritic recorded "mixed or average" reviews for the PC version and "generally favorable" reviews for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions. Reviewers praised the monetization model for avoiding pay-to-win elements, since every hero is free. They also liked that purchased battle passes carry no time limits.

A vote to surrender feature in competitive mode sparked debate in the community, according to Game Rant. It lets a team end a match early if a majority agrees, once a full round has been played. Supporters said it spares players from unwinnable games, especially during connection trouble. Critics feared it would breed a defeatist attitude and cut matches short. The patch of the 26th of June 2025 made the system more forgiving when a teammate disconnects, since the voting threshold now adjusts to the number of players left. Players received that change positively.

Time named Marvel Rivals one of the 10 best video games of 2025. Its award listings include the 28th and 29th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards in the Online Game of the Year category, The Game Awards 2025 in Best Ongoing Game, and the 22nd British Academy Games Awards in Evolving Game. The Steam Awards 2025 listed it under a category called Best Game You Suck At.

  • Paul Allor wrote the first Marvel Rivals Infinity Comic, a six-issue digital limited series drawn by Luca Claretti in 2024. Marvel Comics published it on Marvel Unlimited as part of the Infinity Comics program. It returned in 2025 as an ongoing series. A second digital ongoing series, Marvel Rivals: Unleashed Infinity Comic, began on the 21st of October 2025 and is also written by Allor.

Peach Momoko leads Sai: Dimensional Rivals, a five-issue limited series from 2026 with Stan Sakai, Esad Ribić, Natacha Bustos, Mike del Mundo, and Sara Pichelli. Momoko created Sai as the Ultimate Universe take on Psylocke. The character debuted in the 2021 Demon Days Saga comic series before appearing in Marvel Rivals. In April 2026, Justin Carter of Gizmodo wrote that the game had "reverberated into the main Marvel books". He pointed to the summer's Queen in Black event, which focuses on Hela and follows the symbiote-heavy third season.

The game has also crossed into other media. A new game mode inspired by Marvel Rivals joined the tabletop Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game. Fortnite Battle Royale offered a Marvel Rivals themed glider to players who completed challenges in Rivals and linked an Epic Games account. A Doctor Doom 2099 skin also arrived in Fortnite, with a LEGO style for LEGO Fortnite experiences.

The Marvel Rivals Championship is a seasonal in-game event open to all players, from casual teams to esports-sponsored ones. The Marvel Rivals Invitational is invite-only and features established esports organizations. Marvel Rivals Ignite 2025 is for teams that clear both the open qualifiers and the regional playoffs, and Screen Rant noted its $3 million prize pool as one of the largest seen for the game. Rivals Fight Night is a recurring event with North American and European brackets.

Censorship drew attention after release. The in-game chat blocks "Winnie the Pooh", which led to speculation that NetEase, a China-based developer, was following the restriction on Winnie-the-Pooh in China. Other blocked phrases include "1989", "Tiananmen Square", "Free Taiwan", "Free Hong Kong", and terms about the persecution of Uyghurs. The filter also covers words unrelated to China, such as "ISIS", "Hitler", and "Epstein". Any attempt to send one of them returns a single line: "Text contains inappropriate content."
