That parent, Valnet, folded a website built by a single founder into a wider network of publications. How did one person's entertainment site end up bundled with such different publications? And why did Screen Rant later create an awards show of its own?

• 2. Origins And Ownership

  Vic Holtreman launched Screen Rant in 2003 and ran the entertainment site himself for years afterward. Valnet, an online media company based in Montreal, Quebec, bought Screen Rant in February 2015. Holtreman, who had served as the company's chief executive, sold what he built to the new owner.

  Game Rant, a sister site covering video games, joined Screen Rant under the same roof in 2019. Valnet had just acquired Game Rant outright, and combining the two gave the network shared coverage of games alongside film and television. By then, YouTube comedian Ryan George had already become part of Screen Rant's identity, through a recurring video feature.

• 3. The Screenwriter And The Producer

  Ryan George plays both a screenwriter and a film producer, arguing across a pitch meeting for a film or a TV series. Voicing both sides himself, George stretches the screenwriter's explanation into a rambling sales pitch, then has his own producer character seize on every inconsistency. That single-performer format became one of Screen Rant's signature bits, well before the company tried producing an awards ceremony of its own.

• 4. The Screen Awards

  In 2025, Screen Rant partnered with three fellow Valnet properties, Collider, CBR, and MovieWeb, to launch the first Screen Awards. The ceremony set out to honor achievements in film, television, and anime. Nominees for the inaugural awards were announced on the 10th of December 2025, and winners followed on the 24th of December 2025.

  Best Picture nominees included One Battle After Another, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, Sinners, and Weapons. Best TV Series nominees included The Pitt, Andor, Pluribus, Severance, and Task.

  Best Lead Performance by an Actress in film recognized Jessie Buckley, Rose Byrne, Chase Infiniti, Renate Reinsve, and Emma Stone. The television equivalent nominated Rhea Seehorn, Britt Lower, Bella Ramsey, Jean Smart, and Michelle Williams. Best Lead Performance by an Actor in film named Michael B. Jordan, Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Joel Edgerton, and Jesse Plemons. Its television counterpart nominated Noah Wyle, Ethan Hawke, Adam Scott, Tim Robinson, and Seth Rogen.

  Best Supporting Performance by an Actress in film nominated Teyana Taylor, Ariana Grande, Regina Hall, Wunmi Mosaku, and Amy Madigan. Its television counterpart recognized Carrie Coon, Patricia Arquette, Erin Doherty, Fiona Dourif, and Katherine LaNasa. Best Supporting Performance by an Actor in film named Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Jacob Elordi, Paul Mescal, and Stellan Skarsgård. Its television counterpart nominated Tramell Tillman, Zach Cherry, Owen Cooper, Sam Rockwell, and John Turturro.

  Best Anime Film nominees included Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc, 100 Meters, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Infinity Castle. The category also nominated Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution and Scarlet. Best Anime Series nominees included The Summer Hikaru Died, City the Animation, Gachiakuta, Solo Leveling, and The Apothecary Diaries. Best Director nominees included Ryan Coogler, Paul Thomas Anderson, Zach Cregger, Joachim Trier, and Chloé Zhao. Best New TV Series Debut nominees included The Pitt, The Chair Company, Pluribus, Task, and The Studio.
