Hitman (franchise)

8 sections
  • Hitman is a stealth game franchise from the Danish studio IO Interactive, and it began as a deliberately modest idea. Designer Jacob Andersen described the plan like this: "We decided to do a quick game inspired by Hong Kong action movies... Basically, a guy in a suit blasting away in a Chinese restaurant." From that casual pitch came Agent 47, a contract killer who travels the world to eliminate the targets assigned to him. The series was still releasing new versions in 2025, including a port for iPhone and iPad. How did a quick action game grow into a franchise with eight mainline releases? What happened when publishers changed, sales disappointed and a divisive entry split the fans? And why does a studio that wants its games to feel unpredictable treat the odd behavior of computer-controlled characters as part of the charm?

  • In 1998, the Danish game developer Zyrinx dissolved, and its remaining team members regrouped under a new name, Reto-Moto. That group went on to establish IO Interactive, and Hitman became the first intellectual property the studio created. Hitman: Codename 47 was also IO's debut in the industry. The studio had originally planned a plain shooter called Rex-Domonius, but Reto-Moto abandoned that concept. The pitch that replaced it grew into the story of Agent 47, a genetically engineered clone who works as an assassin.

Two design choices in the first game set it apart. Players could take the disguises of non-player characters, a trick that became a hallmark of the series. The game was also among the first to use ragdoll physics, which made its bodies and movement feel more believable.

Eidos Interactive published Codename 47 in 2000, and it appeared only on Windows. Andersen said the team chose the PC because console development kits were hard to get. Three-dimensional graphics hardware was also becoming common on computers, which made the platform attractive for experimenting. That Windows-only decision would later shape how the studio designed its third game.

  • Every Hitman level starts with a name, a target and a place. The games are played mostly from a third-person view and are set in sandbox environments, where the core goal is to kill one or more assigned targets. Some levels add side objectives, such as retrieving information or destroying a dangerous virus.

The design leaves the method to the player. A killing can be precise or indiscriminate, and the games nudge players toward a subtle approach without requiring one. That freedom of approach is what most critics have singled out when praising the mainline games. The first sequel, released in October 2002, pushed that freedom further.

  • Hitman 2: Silent Assassin arrived from Eidos in October 2002 on Windows, PlayStation 2 and Xbox, with a GameCube version following in June 2003. It leaned harder into stealth. New features included a first-person view mode, non-lethal ways to incapacitate enemies, and missions with several possible approaches. Andersen said that with the PlayStation 2 as the main platform, "we felt more at home." Some fans of the original disliked the new mid-level save system. The artificial intelligence still behaved unpredictably, and Andersen took that with a smile: "Many have tried to fix the AI since, and all have failed... It just has to have those odd moments, otherwise it wouldn't be Hitman."

Hitman: Contracts followed in April 2004. It was both a sequel and a partial remake, rebuilding levels from the first game with better graphics and improved AI. The reason was simple. Only 10% of Silent Assassin players had tried Codename 47, since it had been Windows-only. Andersen called the result "Hitman 2.5."

Hitman: Blood Money reached Windows, PlayStation 2, Xbox and Xbox 360 in May 2006. It had been developed alongside Contracts and continued its story. Extra resources from IO and Eidos produced a big step forward in graphics, AI and level design. It is widely regarded as a cult classic and has been re-released many times, most recently on mobile devices in 2023 and the Nintendo Switch in 2024.

In June 2007, Eidos issued a PlayStation 2 box set of the three games. It was called Hitman Trilogy in North America and The Triple Hit Pack in Europe. Meanwhile, IO moved on to other franchises, including Kane & Lynch in 2007 and 2010 and the family-friendlier Mini Ninjas in 2009.

  • Square Enix acquired Eidos Interactive in 2009, and it published Hitman: Absolution when the game reached Windows, OS X, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on the 20th of November 2012. The developers said they wanted to leave behind the sandbox levels of the first four games. In their place came a cinematic story, more gunplay and a pitch to a broader audience.

The game also introduced Instinct, a mechanic that let players track enemies through walls and highlight objects of interest. It became a staple of later entries.

Reviews were mixed. Critics praised the graphics, environments, locations and varied gameplay options. But many reviewers and long-time fans disliked the linear structure, which replaced the open-ended levels of earlier games. Sales passed 3.6 million copies by March 2013, still short of what Square Enix had predicted.

The publisher kept the older games in circulation. Hitman HD Trilogy brought remastered versions of Silent Assassin, Contracts and Blood Money to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on the 29th of January 2013 in North America. Feral Interactive released an Elite Edition of Absolution for OS X on the 15th of May 2014, with the earlier downloadable add-ons, a making-of documentary and a 72-page artbook. IO's real answer to the disappointment was announced at E3 2015.

  • At E3 2015, IO announced a soft reboot simply titled Hitman, published by Square Enix. It blended ideas from Absolution with the open design of the older games. The first level appeared in March 2016 for Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game came out in episodes, with six levels released monthly through 2016. Extra features included Elusive Targets, Escalations and user-created Contracts. The format let IO refine each level while turning the game into one that kept growing.

Reviews were highly positive, yet the game did not meet Square Enix's financial hopes. In 2017 the publisher parted ways with IO, and the studio kept full control of the Hitman IP as an independent company. Players kept arriving anyway. IO reported seven million players by November 2017 and more than 13 million by May 2018.

IO dropped the episodic format for Hitman 2, announced in June 2018. Warner Bros. Games published it in November 2018, with six large sandbox levels, a multiplayer mode and post-launch additions. Owners of the 2016 game could import its levels and keep their progress. In January 2019, Warner Bros. also released updated Blood Money and Absolution ports for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with 4K resolution and modernized controls.

Hitman 3 was revealed at the PlayStation 5 reveal event in 2020 and launched in January 2021. IO developed and self-published it. Progress carried over from the previous two titles, and the game added VR support, which extended to imported levels. In January 2023, IO merged the earlier two games into it and renamed it Hitman: World of Assassination.

The 26th of January 2023 brought Freelancer mode. Agent 47 lives in a safehouse and dismantles crime syndicates with Diana as his handler. Players pick targets and gear and weigh risk against reward, since failure costs equipment. The mode has 100 mastery levels, with new gear, outfits and safehouse decorations along the way. On the 27th of August 2025, IO released the whole trilogy for iPhone and iPad, with touch controls and support for external game controllers.

  • By 2015 the series had sold over 15 million copies worldwide. The World of Assassination trilogy had reached over 50 million players by November 2021.

The early games drew a more cautious response. Jim Preston reviewed the PC version of Codename 47 for Next Generation, giving it three stars out of five and calling it "A deeply flawed masterpiece that will, nonetheless, reward forgiving gamers." Metacritic rated its reviews as mixed or average. The Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association gave it a Silver sales award for at least 100,000 copies in the United Kingdom. By April 2009, Square Enix said it had passed half a million copies worldwide.

Silent Assassin did better. Critics saw it as an improvement in every respect, and it had sold more than 3.7 million copies by the 23rd of April 2009, the best total in the original series. Contracts earned praise for its gameplay, graphics, soundtrack and darker atmosphere, though critics noted it offered few big changes. It had sold around 2 million copies as of April 2009. Blood Money sold more than 2.1 million copies.

Hitman in 2016 won praise for its episodic format and replayability but drew criticism for its always-online requirement and excessive handholding. It was nominated for Best Action/Adventure Game at The Game Awards 2016, and Giant Bomb named it its Game of the Year. Hitman 2 debuted in tenth place on the UK all-format sales chart. In Japan, its PlayStation 4 version sold 10,162 copies in its first week, the fifth best result among retail games.

Hitman 3 won several year-end awards, including PC Game of the Year at the 2021 Golden Joystick Awards. It sold 300% better than Hitman 2 and made back its development costs in only a week.

  • Square Enix Montreal developed Hitman Go, a turn-based puzzle game released for iOS on the 17th of April 2014 and Android on the 4th of June 2014. Critics were skeptical at first but ended up praising its art, simple mechanics and success in translating Hitman to a phone. Hitman: Sniper followed on the 4th of June 2015. This first-person shooter has no story and puts Agent 47 in a fixed position with a sniper rifle. Its sequel, Hitman Sniper: The Shadows, came out on the 3rd of March 2022 without Agent 47 as a playable character. It was the last Hitman game Square Enix published before selling most of its assets to Embracer Group, and it was discontinued by January 2023.

The 2007 film Hitman, directed by Xavier Gens, starred Timothy Olyphant as Agent 47. Vin Diesel, an executive producer, was first cast in the lead role but was replaced for unknown reasons. The film swapped the International Contract Agency for a group called the Organization, which recruits orphans and trains them from an early age. Olyphant said on the Nerdist podcast that he took the part to pay for a new house after Deadwood was suddenly cancelled. A reboot, Hitman: Agent 47, directed by Aleksander Bach, starred Rupert Friend. Paul Walker had been cast first but died in a car crash on the 30th of November 2013.

Two novels exist. Hitman: Enemy Within by William C. Dietz appeared on the 28th of August 2007 and sits between Silent Assassin and Blood Money, centered on Puissance Treize, a rival of the ICA. Raymond Benson wrote Hitman: Damnation, released on the 30th of October 2012 as a prequel to Absolution. IO and Dynamite Entertainment also produced Agent 47: Birth of the Hitman, a six-issue comic miniseries from November 2017 to June 2018. It shows 47's upbringing at Dr. Ort-Meyer's asylum and his time as a brainwashed assassin for Providence, alongside his best friend Lucas Grey, also called Subject 6.

In November 2017, Hulu and Fox 21 Television Studios announced a television series with Derek Kolstad writing the pilot. The project was officially scrapped in March 2026.

IO says Hitman 3 closes the World of Assassination trilogy but not the franchise. In a December 2025 interview with Variety, CEO Hakan Abrak said IO will first share details of a new co-op mode for the trilogy. After that, the studio will begin talking about the next Hitman game.
