  • Cardi B reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated the 25th of September 2017, with a song called "Bodak Yellow." No solo female rapper had topped that chart since Lauryn Hill's "Doo Wop (That Thing)" in 1998. The woman behind the record was born Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar and raised in New York City. Today she holds eight Guinness World Records. How did a young woman from the South Bronx, first noticed for short videos on Vine and Instagram, get there? What did her music say that listeners had not heard in a long time? And what happened to the women in rap who followed her?

  • Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar was born on the 11th of October 1992 in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan. Her father, Carlos, is Dominican. Her mother, Clara, is a Trinidadian of multiethnic descent, and Almánzar identifies as Afro-Caribbean. She was raised in the Highbridge neighborhood of the South Bronx but spent much time at her paternal grandmother's home in Washington Heights. She credits that house with giving her "such a thick accent." Her stage name grew out of Bacardi, a rum brand that had once been her nickname. A younger sister, Hennessy Carolina, was born in 1995.

She attended Renaissance High School for Musical Theater & Technology, a vocational school on the Herbert H. Lehman High School campus. She speaks Dominican Spanish and English, plus a small amount of Russian and French. She has also said she joined the Bloods at the age of 16, while adding that she would not encourage anyone to join a gang.

A grocery store in Tribeca gave her a job in her teens, and then fired her. She took work as a dancer at a strip club across the street. Of stripping, she has said: "It really saved me from a lot of things. When I started stripping I went back to school." She has explained that she wanted to escape poverty and domestic violence. She had been kicked out of her mother's house and was in an abusive relationship. Stripping was her only way to earn enough to get out and get an education. She enrolled at the Borough of Manhattan Community College but eventually dropped out. During those years she told her mother that her money came from babysitting. In April 2016 she appeared on the twelfth episode of Khloé Kardashian's Kocktails with Khloé and revealed how she finally told her mother what the job really was.

In 2016 she also said that, while working as a stripper, she used to drug and rob men for their money. Controversy over that remark was sparked in 2019. She answered it this way: "whether or not they were poor choices at the time, I did what I had to do to survive."

In 2013, several of her videos spread across Vine and her Instagram page, and her publicity began to grow. In 2015 she joined the cast of the VH1 reality series Love & Hip Hop: New York, debuting in its sixth season. Jezebel considered her the breakout star of that season. The New York Times credited her popularity to "her ability to rattle off one-liners." The sixth and seventh seasons followed her rise and her turbulent relationship with her fiancé, who was incarcerated. On the 30th of December 2016, after two seasons, she announced that she was leaving the show to pursue music.

Her musical debut had come in November 2015, on Shaggy's remix of his single "Boom Boom," alongside dancehall singer Popcaan. On the 15th of December 2015 she made her music video debut with "Cheap Ass Weave," her version of British rapper Lady Leshurr's "Queen's Speech 4." Her first full-length project, the mixtape Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 1, arrived on the 7th of March 2016. That year she landed her first endorsement deal, with Romantic Depot, a large New York chain of lingerie stores. In November it was announced that she would join the cast of the BET series Being Mary Jane. A second mixtape, Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 2, followed on the 20th of January 2017.

  • In late February 2017, Atlantic Records signed Cardi B to her first major-label recording contract. On the 25th of February she opened for the East Coast hip hop group The Lox on their Filthy America... It's Beautiful Tour, alongside New York rappers Lil' Kim and Remy Ma. In May, the BET Awards nominated her for Best New Artist and Best Female Hip-Hop Artist. Chance the Rapper and Remy Ma won those categories, but she still performed at the awards afterparty.

On the 11th of June 2017, at Hot 97's annual Summer Jam, Remy Ma brought her onstage with The Lady of Rage, MC Lyte, Young M.A, Monie Love, Lil' Kim and Queen Latifah. Together they performed Latifah's 1993 hit "U.N.I.T.Y." in celebration of female rappers. Five days later, on the 16th of June, Atlantic released her commercial debut single, "Bodak Yellow." She performed it on The Wendy Williams Show and on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

The song climbed the charts for several months. Its three consecutive weeks at number one matched Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do" for the longest run by a woman at the top in 2017. Cardi B also became the first person of Dominican descent to reach number one in the history of the Hot 100, which began in 1958. An editor of The New York Times called the song "the rap anthem of the summer." Music critics at The Washington Post and Pitchfork each chose it as the best song of 2017. The Recording Industry Association of America eventually certified it Diamond. It earned Grammy nominations for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song at the 60th Grammy Awards, and it won Single of the Year at the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards.

With the collaborations "No Limit" and "MotorSport," she became the first female rapper to land her first three Hot 100 entries in the top 10. In October 2017 she headlined Power 105.1's Powerhouse celebration at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, on a bill with the Weeknd, Migos and Lil Uzi Vert. That December she released "La Modelo" with Puerto Rican singer Ozuna, followed by "Bartier Cardi," the second single from her upcoming debut album. On the 3rd of January 2018 she joined Bruno Mars on the remix of his single "Finesse," which reached the top three on the Hot 100 and in Canada and New Zealand.

  • On the 18th of January 2018, Cardi B held five top 10 singles at once on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. No female rapper had done that before. She released "Be Careful" on the 30th of March. Her debut studio album, Invasion of Privacy, followed on the 6th of April 2018 to universal acclaim from music critics.

Variety editors called it "one of the most powerful debuts of this millennium." The New York Times described it as "a hip-hop album that doesn't sound like any of its temporal peers." It entered at number one in the United States. On the chart dated the 21st of April, she became the first female artist to place 13 entries on the Hot 100 at the same time. The album also delivered the largest on-demand audio streaming week ever for an album by a woman, a record she held until 2019. Its title reflects her feeling that, as she grew more popular, her privacy was being invaded in many ways.

After the release, during a performance on Saturday Night Live, she announced her pregnancy after much media speculation. She also co-hosted an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In May 2018 she was a featured guest on the song "Girls," and she answered accusations that it trivialized LGBT relationships. She tweeted, "We never try to cause harm or had bad intentions with the song." She added, "I personally myself had experiences with other women."

In July 2018, "I Like It," with Bad Bunny and J Balvin, became her second number one. That made her the first female rapper with multiple chart-toppers. Several publications credit it as the first Latin trap song to reach number one on the Hot 100. In 2020, Rolling Stone named it "the best summer song of all time."

Her collaboration with Maroon 5, "Girls Like You," became her third number one. It spent seven weeks on top, which brought her cumulative weeks at number one to eleven. It also spent 33 weeks in the top 10, tying Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" and Post Malone and Swae Lee's "Sunflower" for the longest top 10 run in the chart's archives at the time. Because it followed "I Like It" at the top of the Radio Songs chart, she became the first female rapper to replace herself at number one there. Its music video has passed 3.8 billion views on YouTube, and the song was the fifth-best selling of the year worldwide.

"Taki Taki," her collaboration with DJ Snake, topped the charts in a number of Hispanic countries. It made her the first female rapper to top the Spotify Global 50 chart, and its video has passed 2 billion views. At the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards she received twelve nominations, the most of any act, and won three. She tied with Drake for the most nominations at the 2018 American Music Awards and won three there as well. Her single "Money" earned a fourth Video Music Award, with a video that places her in an art museum, a bank and a strip club.

In September 2025, Invasion of Privacy was certified six-times platinum. With its thirteen tracks, it became the first album in history to have every song certified platinum or higher. Back in 2018, Time had put her on its list of the 100 most influential people in the world, and NME later said the era secured "her crown as the new Queen of Rap."

  • The 61st Grammy Awards brought Cardi B five nominations, including Album of the Year, Best Rap Album and Record of the Year for "I Like It." She became the third female rapper nominated for Album of the Year, after Lauryn Hill in 1999 and Missy Elliott in 2004. On the 10th of February 2019 she performed at the ceremony in three vintage couture looks. She left as the first female rapper to win Best Rap Album as a solo artist.

The 2019 Billboard Music Awards gave her 21 nominations, the most in a single year for a female artist. She won six, including Top Hot 100 Song, which raised her career total to seven, the most of any female rapper. A writer at the Omaha World-Herald called her "the biggest rapper in the world."

On the 15th of February 2019 she released "Please Me" with Bruno Mars, which reached number three. On the 1st of March she drew 75,580 fans to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, a new attendance record. Her single "Press" came out on the 31st of May. Its video, released on the 26th of June, marked her directorial debut as a co-director. At the 2019 BET Awards she led the nominations with seven and won Album of the Year. That summer she went on an arena tour.

Her film debut came in Hustlers, directed by Lorene Scafaria and released on the 13th of September 2019. She appeared opposite Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu and Lili Reinhart. Less than a month later, on the 9th of October, Netflix premiered Rhythm + Flow, a ten-part hip-hop talent search that she executive produced. She judged it alongside Chance the Rapper and T.I.

In December 2019 she made her first tour of Africa, performing in Nigeria and Ghana. Bloomberg News reported that her data bill helped boost Ghana's GDP growth that year. In March 2020 she posted a reaction video about the coronavirus pandemic. Brooklyn DJ iMarkkeyz, known for turning memes and online moments into full songs, built a track from it called "Coronavirus." It became an internet meme.

On the 7th of August 2020, Cardi B released "WAP" with Megan Thee Stallion, the lead single from her forthcoming second album. Critics praised its sex-positive messages. Colin Tilley directed the video, which set the record for the biggest 24-hour YouTube debut for an all-female collaboration. The song debuted at number one on the Hot 100, her fourth chart-topper. That made her the first female rapper with number ones in two different decades.

Its 93 million streaming units in the first week beat the record held by Ariana Grande's "7 Rings." It spent four weeks on top of the Hot 100 and multiple weeks at number one in seven other countries, including Australia and the United Kingdom. Neil Shah of The Wall Street Journal called it "a big moment for female rappers" and "a historic sign that women artists are making their mark on hip-hop like never before." It became the first number one on the newly launched Billboard Global 200. A compilation of critics' rankings made by the BBC named it the best song of the year, and Pitchfork and Rolling Stone each placed it first.

In December 2020, Billboard named her Woman of the Year at its Women in Music Awards, a first for a female rapper. At the American Music Awards, "WAP" made her the first artist to win Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Song more than once.

  • Cardi B released "Up" on the 5th of February 2021, and NME praised its lyricism and fresh approach as a successor to "WAP." It debuted at number two on the Hot 100, the highest debut for a solo female rap song since 1998. After her Grammy Awards performance it climbed to number one. That made her the only female rapper to top the chart more than once with solo songs, and it was her fifth chart-topper.

Guest spots and screen work filled the rest of 2021. She made a last-minute appearance on DJ Khaled's "Big Paper" and featured on Normani's "Wild Side." She collaborated with Lizzo on "Rumors," which debuted at number four on the Hot 100 and became her tenth top-ten single. She played a brief role in the film F9, released on the 25th of June. At the BET Awards she won Video of the Year for "WAP," the first win in that category for a female rapper as a lead artist.

On the 21st of November 2021 she hosted the American Music Awards at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. It was the most social telecast of the year, measured by interactions on social media. "Up" won Favorite Hip Hop Song, making her the first artist to win that category three times. Two days earlier, Warner Records had released her original song "Bet It" for Bruised, a Netflix sports drama that she co-executive produced. It was Halle Berry's directorial debut.

In April 2022, Cardi B voiced Sharki B, her "aquatic alter ego," in an episode of the Nickelodeon series Baby Shark's Big Show! She performed a song called "The Seaweed Sway" and appeared alongside Offset and her daughter. On the 1st of July she released "Hot Shit" with Kanye West and Lil Durk. On the 8th and the 9th of July she headlined the Wireless Festival in London and Birmingham. In September, the remix "Tomorrow 2," made with her cousin and fellow rapper GloRilla, peaked at number nine on the Hot 100. It was her eleventh top-ten single, and HipHopDX listed it as the best hip-hop collaboration of 2022.

In November 2022 she signed with entertainment executive Irving Azoff's Full Stop Management. The next month she was paid $1 million for a 35-minute private performance at Miami Art Basel. Her single "Bongos," again with Megan Thee Stallion, arrived on the 8th of September 2023. Tanu Muino directed its video, which cost more than $2 million. On the 10th of December she co-headlined TikTok's inaugural In the Mix festival in Mesa, Arizona, and a concert special reached Disney+ and Hulu five days later.

On the 1st of March 2024 she released the promotional single "Like What (Freestyle)," a freestyle of Missy Elliott's 1999 song "She's a Bitch." Offset directed the video. It was her first solo song since "Up." Two weeks later came "Enough (Miami)," which earned a nomination for Best Rap Performance at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. On the 11th of March she joined Madonna onstage at the Inglewood show of the Celebration Tour. She also appeared on Shakira's "Puntería," which reached number one on the Latin Airplay chart and topped the Latin Pop Airplay chart for nine weeks.

  • On the 19th of September 2025, Cardi B released her second studio album, Am I the Drama?, more than seven years after her debut. The project had been delayed numerous times over multiple years. She cited perfectionism and the pressure to live up to expectations. It was recorded over a six-year period and has 23 tracks, including "WAP" and "Up."

The single "Outside" arrived on the 20th of June and debuted at number ten on the Hot 100. That gave her three top-ten debuts, the most of any female rapper. "Imaginary Playerz" followed on the 15th of August and samples Jay-Z's 1997 track "Imaginary Players." "Safe," featuring Kehlani, was released alongside the album and became her tenth number one on the Rhythmic Airplay chart. A remix of "ErrTime" featuring Jeezy came out in November 2025 as the fourth and final single.

Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone described the album as a "massive comeback triumph." It debuted atop the Billboard 200 with 200,000 album-equivalent units, the biggest sales week of 2025 for an R&B/hip-hop album by a woman. She became the only female rapper in history to have her first two albums debut at number one. The album placed 18 songs on the Hot 100, the most for any album in that chart's history. It spent eight weeks in the top ten of the Billboard 200, the most for a female rap album in the 2020s. The RIAA certified it triple platinum, making it the highest-certified female rap album of the decade.

On the 27th of September she co-headlined the Global Citizen Festival in New York City. On the 13th of December she headlined the final night of the 2025 Soundstorm Festival in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. On the 31st of January 2026 she was the musical guest on the 1,000th episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Alexander Skarsgård.

In February 2026 she won three NAACP Image Awards. They were Outstanding Album for Am I The Drama?, Outstanding Hip-Hop/Rap Song for "ErrTime," and Outstanding Female Artist. She was the first hip-hop artist to win that last award since Lauryn Hill in 1999. Only two hip-hop albums had won Outstanding Album before hers: Hill's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1999 and Kendrick Lamar's Damn in 2017.

The Little Miss Drama Tour ran for 35 arena shows across the United States and Canada, from February to April 2026. Paula Mejía of The Guardian called it an "ambitious spectacle" that translated Cardi's "online-era charisma into a physical arena powerhouse." The tour sold 453,000 tickets and grossed $70 million. On the 24th of April she featured on "Pocket," from Kehlani's self-titled album, their third collaboration. At the 2026 American Music Awards she won Best Hip-Hop Album, Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and Best Hip-Hop Song for "Errtime." Her four wins in that last category are an all-time record, and her total at the ceremony now stands at nine.

  • Missy Elliott and Tweet made the first albums Cardi B ever bought, she told Billboard. She credits Ivy Queen and Spice as influences, along with Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Lil' Kim, Madonna and Selena. She also names Chicago drill music as important. She credits Khia and Trina for her aggressive style, recalling that she liked their "fighting songs" and had not heard any for a very long time. The South Bronx, she says, made her success possible. Without growing up there, she "wouldn't be able to rap about the things that I rap about now."

Consequence of Sound called her flow "acrobatic and nimble," while Newsweek and AllMusic called it "aggressive." The Los Angeles Times described her vocal on "WAP" as a "staccato bark." The New York Times called her punchlines "classically comedic." Invasion of Privacy mixes hip hop with trap, Latin music and R&B. She has defended her sexually charged lyrics by saying the content "seems like that's what people want to hear." She says that after her more emotional song "Be Careful," she faced negative reactions.

Christian Louboutin heels run through "Bodak Yellow" as a theme. She also loves cheap, fast fashion, and says that if something looks good on her, the price does not matter. The vintage Thierry Mugler looks she wore at the 2019 Grammys included a Swarovski crystal-embroidered crinoline sheath gown. An article in i-D said the fashion house's resurgence could "almost single-handedly" be attributed to that gown. It was the second time in 25 years that the Paris house opened its archives to dress a celebrity, after Beyoncé's 2009 concert tour.

In 2018 she became the first female rapper in the United States to appear on the cover of Vogue. Annie Leibovitz photographed the cover, one of four for the January 2019 issue, with Cardi in a red and white Michael Kors dress, holding her daughter, Kulture. At the 2019 Met Gala she wore a burgundy Thom Browne gown that extended outward for about ten feet. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour said she had "completely rethought her opinion of Cardi B's style." In 2020 she became the face of Balenciaga's winter campaign, with billboards in several international locations, including the Louvre museum. That same year she became the first female rapper to win the FN Achievement Awards' Style Influencer of the Year, presented by Christian Louboutin.

A Tom Ford lipstick inspired by her and named after her was released in September 2018, and it sold out within 24 hours. Her four-year partnership with Reebok produced five collections and ended in December 2022. In December 2021 she launched Whipshots, a vodka-infused vegan whipped cream, with Starco Brands, and it has sold over five million cans as of March 2024. In February 2023 she and Offset launched a McDonald's meal that was first announced in the chain's Super Bowl commercial.

In April 2025 she announced a joint venture with the retailer Revolve Group. Her haircare brand, Grow Good Beauty, was announced in February 2026 and debuted on the 15th of April. It offered six products: two shampoos, two conditioners, a hair mask and a serum. The range sold out within the first 45 minutes. The brand followed years of her sharing homemade hair mask recipes and hair care routines on social media.

In 2022 she donated $100,000 to I.S. 232, the elementary school she attended in the Bronx. That year she also pledged to cover the funeral expenses of all 17 victims of the Bronx apartment fire. She identifies as a feminist and uses social media to advocate for causes such as gun control.

Genius staff credited her with helping jumpstart a new wave of female hip-hop signings and promotion at labels. The New Yorker credited her with changing a genre that has rarely allowed for more than one female superstar at a time. Clover Hope's 2021 book The Motherlode argued that Invasion of Privacy launched a new era in which many women rappers could dominate at once. NPR defined a "Cardi B effect" as a branding power rooted in specific authenticity. In 2019, a life-sized sculpture of her went on display at the Brooklyn Museum as part of Spotify's RapCaviar "Pantheon." Rosalía, Olivia Rodrigo and Selena Gomez are among the artists who cite her work as an inspiration. She even inspired a sitcom, Partners in Rhyme, executive produced by MC Lyte, about a high school girl who hopes to become the next Cardi B.
