  • In 2016, Selena Gomez became the first person to reach 100 million followers on Instagram, a milestone Time later singled out in its Firsts series. Gomez is an American actress, singer, songwriter, businesswoman, and producer, born in 1992.

That same year, David Amsden of W magazine called her "the most popular girl in America." He wrote that she "embodies a particular strain of American fame: you know who she is without quite knowing who she is."

That sentence is the puzzle this documentary tries to solve. How did Gomez get so far ahead of the crowd? What did all that attention cost her? And what does she want her name to stand for now that the fame is settled?

  • Grand Prairie, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, is where Selena Marie Gomez was born on the 22nd of July 1992. Her mother, Amanda Dawn "Mandy" Teefey, was a former stage actress, and her father is Ricardo Joel Gomez. Her mother was only 16 when she was born. She was named after the Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla.

Monterrey, Mexico, was the starting point for her paternal grandparents, who emigrated to Texas in the 1970s. Her mother, who was adopted, has Italian ancestry. Gomez has called herself "a proud third-generation American-Mexican." She once described her family's traditions this way: "My family does have quinceañeras, and we go to the communion church. We do everything that's Catholic, but we don't really have anything traditional except go to the park and have barbecues on Sundays after church." Her Spanish faded after age seven, when she began working in television.

She was five when her parents divorced, and she stayed with her mother. Money was scarce. Gomez remembers hunting for quarters to put gasoline in the car, and her mother later recalled frequent walks to a nearby dollar store to buy spaghetti for dinner. Gomez has said of her mother: "She gave up everything for me, had three jobs, supported me, sacrificed her life for me." Her grandparents helped too, and she says they "raised her" until she found success in show business.

She spent most of her childhood homeschooled and finished her high-school diploma that way in May 2010. Looking back, she said: "I'm terrified of what I would have become if I'd stayed in Texas." A half-sister, Gracie Elliot Teefey, was born to her mother and stepfather Brian Teefey in 2013. Long before that, Gomez first wanted a career in entertainment while watching her mother prepare for stage productions.

  • In 2002, Gomez started acting on the children's television series Barney & Friends. She appeared in thirteen episodes between 2002 and 2004, plus two related direct-to-video films. She later recalled: "I was very shy when I was little … I didn't know what 'camera right' was. I didn't know what blocking was. I learned everything from Barney." After two seasons, producers decided she had outgrown the role.

The Disney Channel changed her life in 2007. She first played a rival pop star named Mikayla on Hannah Montana, then won the lead role of Alex Russo on Wizards of Waverly Place. She and her mother moved to Los Angeles. The sitcom premiered in October 2007 and ran four seasons. Mary McNamara of the Los Angeles Times called Gomez "sweet and sassy" with "great comic timing." She won an ALMA Award and five consecutive Kids' Choice Awards for Favorite TV Actress.

In August 2009, Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie premiered to 11.4 million viewers. It became the second-highest-rated cable television film of all time, behind only High School Musical 2.

Music arrived in parallel. In 2008, at age 16, Gomez signed with Hollywood Records and formed the production company July Moon Productions. Her debut single, "Tell Me Something I Don't Know," came from the soundtrack to the film Another Cinderella Story and gave her a first appearance on the US Billboard Hot 100. She wanted a band rather than a solo act, but the label preferred to put her name on the group because of her fan base. The result was Selena Gomez & the Scene.

The band released Kiss & Tell in 2009, A Year Without Rain in 2010, and When the Sun Goes Down in 2011. They peaked at numbers nine, four, and three on the US Billboard 200. Singles included "Naturally," "Who Says," and "Love You Like a Love Song," which Billboard later ranked as the biggest hit to peak at number twenty-two in the US.

By 2011, Billboard was calling her the "Internet queen of Disney," and The Guardian dubbed her the "Tween Queen."

  • Harmony Korine's crime film Spring Breakers premiered at the 69th Venice International Film Festival in 2012. Gomez played Faith, a religious college student whose spring break trip takes a criminal turn. Her co-stars included James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine. The film reached theaters in March 2013 and grossed US$31.7 million worldwide against a budget of US$5 million. It was later described as a cult classic. Manohla Dargis of The New York Times wrote that it gave Gomez "the chance to simulate the behavior that feeds the tabloids" without the "humiliations" or "career-crushing price" that usually follow. Gomez herself calls the role a turning point.

Not every swerve worked. In 2013, Getaway cast her opposite Ethan Hawke as a young hacker. Critics widely panned it, some called her miscast, and it became a box-office bomb. She was also voicing Mavis Dracula in Hotel Transylvania, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2012 and grossed US$358 million worldwide.

She had models in mind for the transition. Britney Spears was a "huge inspiration" when Gomez wanted to shed her Disney image. She also pointed to Shia LaBeouf, who moved from Disney Channel star to adult film actor. In 2013, Hadley Freeman of The Guardian judged that Gomez had managed the shift better than some of her peers, though the Disney association could still hurt her chances of being taken seriously.

The business side shifted as well. Selena Gomez & the Scene went on hiatus in 2012, and the pause became a permanent split. Gomez called her time in the band an "exploratory period." In 2014, she ended the management arrangement with her mother and stepfather, who had guided her since the Disney years. The Hollywood Reporter tied the move to a push for more adult-oriented work in film and music. She signed with WME and Brillstein, then left Hollywood Records for Interscope Records in December 2014.

The sound of that new chapter arrived in November 2014 with "The Heart Wants What It Wants." It peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and has been described as a turning point, with darker themes and more personal lyrics.

  • Peter Robinson of The Guardian credited Gomez with popularizing "whisper pop," a style built on soft, hushed vocals. He pointed to "Good for You" and "Bad Liar" as the apotheosis of the style. Producer Tainy says she conveys emotion through "subtlety" rather than power. Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone heard in her lyrics an "awesomely contorted private language" that is instantly recognizable.

Her solo career began in April 2013 with "Come & Get It," which peaked at number six on the Hot 100. Stars Dance followed in July 2013 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 97,000 copies. She described its sound as "baby dubstep," and the producer Skrillex influenced it through his score for Spring Breakers.

Revival arrived in October 2015, opening at number one with 117,000 album units. Its first three singles, "Good for You," "Same Old Love," and "Hands to Myself," each reached the US top ten and topped the Pop Airplay chart. That made her the sixth woman to score three Pop Airplay number-ones from a single set. Brittany Spanos of Rolling Stone called it "the sound of a newly empowered pop artist growing into her strengths like never before." Gomez cited Christina Aguilera's Stripped as an influence on its concept.

In between and after the albums came a run of collaborations: "We Don't Talk Anymore" with Charlie Puth, "It Ain't Me" with Kygo, "Wolves" with Marshmello, and "Taki Taki" with DJ Snake. The Spotify video for "Bad Liar" in 2017 was the first music video to premiere on that platform. From 2011 to 2018, she logged 15 consecutive top-forty entries on the Hot 100.

Rare, released in January 2020, gave her a third consecutive number-one album with 112,000 units. Its single "Lose You to Love Me" became her first number-one song in the US and Canada. In March 2021, her Spanish-language EP Revelación topped the Top Latin Albums chart. She was the first woman to do so since Shakira's El Dorado in 2017. It earned a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album.

In August 2022, her feature on the remix of Rema's "Calm Down" spent ten weeks atop Billboard's Radio Songs chart. It set a record as the longest-running number-one on the US Afrobeats Songs chart. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry ranked it the second best-selling song worldwide of 2023.

In March 2025, she and the producer Benny Blanco released I Said I Love You First. It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 with 120,000 units, the largest sales week of her career. She had been dating Blanco since June 2023, and they announced their engagement on the 11th of December 2024. They married on the 27th of September 2025 in Santa Barbara, California. Her earlier on-again, off-again romance with Justin Bieber, from December 2010 to March 2018, was a constant tabloid subject.

  • In March 2017, the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why premiered with Gomez as an executive producer. She had first been attached to play Hannah Baker in a film version of Jay Asher's novel before the project became a series. Mental health and suicide-prevention groups criticized how it handled its themes. Gomez answered that the team wanted to "do it justice" and said backlash was inevitable because "it's not an easy subject to talk about." It was the most-watched original streaming series of 2018 and ended in June 2020 after four seasons.

October 2019 brought the Netflix docuseries Living Undocumented, which she executive produced. It follows eight undocumented families in the US. In an op-ed for Time, she wrote that she joined after seeing footage that captured the "shame, uncertainty, and fear" her own family had known.

August 2020 brought Selena + Chef, a cooking show she hosted and produced for HBO Max, filmed remotely at first because of the pandemic. It ran four seasons and earned three Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Culinary Program.

Only Murders in the Building, which premiered in August 2021, is her longest-running role. She plays Mabel Mora opposite Steve Martin and Martin Short. It set a record as Hulu's most-watched comedy premiere day. Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times called her "a true co-star in the series." Martin has praised her understanding that "quiet acting is powerful acting." Gomez compares Mabel to "an older version" of Alex Russo. As a producer, she has received four Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series. The cast won a SAG Award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 2025.

Jacques Audiard's Spanish-language musical crime film Emilia Pérez premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Gomez, Karla Sofía Gascón, Adriana Paz, and Zoe Saldaña jointly won the Best Actress Award. Gomez played Jessi, wife of a former cartel leader, and took Spanish lessons for the part. She earned BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress, though some critics faulted her Spanish pronunciation.

She has said she would rather have smaller parts in distinctive films. As she put it, "I'd rather have four scenes in a Martin Scorsese film" than star in a standard coming-of-age romance. On the 17th of May 2026, she was confirmed to star in Brady Corbet's next film alongside Cate Blanchett.

  • Between 2012 and early 2014, Gomez was diagnosed with a form of lupus erythematosus. In December 2013, she canceled the Australian and Asian legs of her Stars Dance Tour. In January 2014, it was reported that she had spent two weeks in treatment at the Meadows facility in Arizona. In 2015, she revealed that she had undergone chemotherapy for lupus.

August 2016 brought another interruption. Midway through the Revival Tour, she canceled her European and South American dates to seek treatment for anxiety, panic attacks and depression connected to lupus. She remained in a treatment facility for 90 days. Her return came in November 2016 at the American Music Awards, where she won Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist.

In September 2017, she told her Instagram followers that she had stepped back from public events because she received a kidney transplant from her friend, the actress Francia Raisa. During the surgery, one of her arteries ruptured. Surgeons had to replace it with a femoral vein, in a procedure called autotransplantation.

She began psychotherapy in her early twenties. In April 2020, she revealed she has bipolar disorder, and in November 2022 she disclosed an episode of psychosis in 2018. Alek Keshishian directed the documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, which premiered at AFI Fest in November 2022 before reaching Apple TV+. Critics noted its candid approach to mental health. She has taken several extended breaks from social media, partly because of negative comments.

In a 2017 interview with Billboard, she said she had often felt defined "not by my work but by who I was." In September 2024, she shared that her health issues mean she cannot have children naturally, and she mentioned surrogacy or adoption as future options. Her advocacy earned her the McLean Award in 2019.

  • In September 2009, at age 17, Gomez was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, the organization's youngest at the time. A year earlier, as spokesperson for the Halloween campaign Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, she helped raise more than US$700,000. Her first field mission took her to Ghana, where she visited programs on clean water, nutrition, education, and healthcare. Between 2010 and 2013, three Acoustic Charity Concerts raised nearly US$400,000 for UNICEF programs.

By 2013, she had granted more than 90 wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In 2016, a portion of Revival Tour ticket sales went to the Lupus Research Alliance, which reported that her efforts raised nearly US$500,000. In 2017, she helped establish the Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at the University of Southern California.

Her business life began with the Dream Out Loud clothing line, sold through Kmart in 2010. Later came a Coach collaboration beginning in December 2016 and a Puma partnership in 2018. In 2021, she co-founded the mental health media platform Wondermind, which raised US$5 million in 2022 at a US$100 million valuation. A 2025 profile in Vogue Business described her shift from endorsement deals toward ownership.

Rare Beauty launched in September 2020 as a makeup brand sold through its webstore and Sephora in the US. Its products are cruelty-free and vegan, in recyclable packaging. It later reached Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, and arrived at Ulta Beauty in the US in 2026. Its estimated 2023 revenue reached US$300 million, up roughly 50 percent from 2022. In May 2024, the brand was valued at US$2 billion. In September 2024, Bloomberg reported that Gomez had become a billionaire, with an estimated net worth of $1.3 billion, roughly 81% of it from Rare Beauty.

The Rare Impact Fund launched alongside the brand in 2020, backed by one percent of company sales. Its goal is to raise US$100 million over ten years for youth mental health services and education. By April 2026, it had raised more than US$30 million.
