  • Kanye Omari West was born on the 8th of June 1977, in Atlanta, Georgia, and by the time he was done reshaping American music, he had become one of the most examined, celebrated, and condemned figures in the history of popular culture. He has sold 160 million records. He holds 24 Grammy Awards. Six of his albums appear on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest ever made. And yet, by the time he published a full-page apology in The Wall Street Journal in January 2026, his reputation was described as "tainted" by the very newspaper that ran it.

How does a five-year-old who starts writing poetry in suburban Chicago become the first rapper to top the Billboard Hot 100 across three separate decades? How does a producer who revolutionized hip-hop through what critics called a "chipmunk soul" sampling style become a figure whose antisemitic remarks cost him billions of dollars in partnerships and eventually got him banned from entering the United Kingdom? And what does it mean that through all of it, the music kept coming?

The answers lie in a story that moves from Oak Lawn, Illinois to Nanjing, China, from a shattered jaw in 2002 that sparked one of hip-hop's most celebrated debut albums, to a luxury suite at Mercedes-Benz Stadium where he finished an album while living in a locker room. The story of Ye is not a rise and fall. It is something far more complicated than that.

  • After his parents divorced when he was three, West moved with his mother, Donda C. West, from Atlanta to Chicago. Donda was an English professor, eventually becoming chair of the English department at Chicago State University. His father, Ray West, had been a member of the Black Panthers and was one of the first Black photojournalists at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution before becoming a Christian counselor.

The household West grew up in was one of books and faith and middle-class stability. He attended Polaris School for Individual Education in Oak Lawn, Illinois. At age ten, his mother took him to Nanjing, China, where she was teaching as a Fulbright Scholar. West was the only foreigner in his class but adapted quickly, picking up the language before largely forgetting it after he returned.

He started writing poetry at age five. By third grade, he was rapping. By seventh grade, he was composing beats and selling them to other artists. His early mentor was producer No I.D., a Chicago figure who took West under his wing as a teenager.

In 1997, after graduating high school, West received a scholarship to attend the American Academy of Art in Chicago, where he studied painting. He transferred to Chicago State University to study English, then dropped out at age twenty to pursue music. His mother, who worked at that very university, was displeased, though she eventually accepted his decision and later became his manager.

  • West received his first official production credit at nineteen, producing eight tracks on the 1996 debut album of Chicago underground rapper Grav. Two years later, he became the first producer signed to Hip Hop Since 1978, the management-production company founded by Gee Roberson and Kyambo "Hip-Hop" Joshua.

Because an association with producer Deric "D-Dot" Angelettie prevented him from releasing solo work, West formed the Go-Getters, a Chicago hip-hop group. They released one album, World Record Holders, in 1999, through West's own company, Konman Productions.

By 2000, he was producing for Roc-A-Fella Records as an in-house producer. His contributions to Jay-Z's 2001 album The Blueprint were later credited with revitalizing Jay-Z's career; Rolling Stone ranked it among the greatest hip-hop albums ever made. West also produced for Beanie Sigel, Freeway, Ludacris, Alicia Keys, and Janet Jackson.

Multiple record companies, including Capitol Records, rejected him as a rapper because he did not fit the gangsta image dominant in mainstream hip-hop at the time. Roc-A-Fella head Damon Dash signed West only reluctantly, fearing he would defect to another label.

Then, in 2002, West was in a car accident that shattered his jaw. Two weeks after being admitted to the hospital, with his jaw still wired shut, he went to the Record Plant Studios and recorded "Through the Wire". That song appeared on his debut mixtape, Get Well Soon, released in December 2002, and announced a recording artist who would not be stopped by either industry gatekeepers or physical injury.

  • West recorded most of The College Dropout in Los Angeles while still recovering from the accident. The album leaked months before its planned release date, and West used that time to remix, remaster, and revise, adding new verses, string arrangements, gospel choirs, and improved drum programming. After being postponed three times from its initial August 2003 date, it was finally released in February 2004, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200.

"Slow Jamz", featuring Twista and Jamie Foxx, became the first number-one hit for all three artists. "Jesus Walks", the fourth single, reached the top twenty of the pop charts despite industry predictions that a song with overt declarations of Christian faith would never receive radio play. The album was certified triple platinum in the United States and earned West ten Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year, and won Best Rap Album.

For his second album, West invested $2 million and spent over a year working on it. He was inspired by a 1998 live album by English trip hop group Portishead, recorded with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and used his commercial earnings to hire a live string orchestra for his own production. He collaborated with American film score composer Jon Brion, who served as co-executive producer on several tracks.

Late Registration sold over 2.3 million units in the United States alone by the end of 2005. At the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards, when "Touch the Sky" lost Best Video to Justice and Simian's "We Are Your Friends", West walked onstage during the presentation to argue he should have won. Hundreds of news outlets criticized the outburst. He apologized publicly on the 7th of November 2006, during his performance as support act for U2 at a concert in Brisbane.

  • Graduation, West's third album, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in September 2007, selling 957,000 copies in its first week. Its lead single, "Stronger", which samples French house duo Daft Punk, became his third number-one hit and has been credited with encouraging other hip-hop artists to incorporate house and electronica into their work.

In November 2007, West's mother Donda died. His engagement to designer Alexis Phifer, which had begun in August 2006, ended shortly after. Both events profoundly affected him. He set off on his 2008 Glow in the Dark Tour before recording his fourth album, 808s and Heartbreak, in Honolulu, Hawaii, in just three weeks.

When 808s and Heartbreak was released by Island Def Jam in November 2008, its lead single "Love Lockdown" debuted at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. Audiences were surprised by the AutoTune-heavy, minimalist production style. Despite criticism before release, the album has since been widely credited with encouraging other rappers to take more creative risks, and its influence on the sound of hip-hop has been substantial.

At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, while Taylor Swift was accepting her award for Best Female Video, West walked on stage, took the microphone from her, and declared that Beyonce deserved the award. He was removed from the remainder of the show. President Barack Obama publicly called West a "jackass". West apologized, including personally to Swift. In a November 2010 interview, he called the act "selfless", appearing to recant his apology.

  • Following the VMA incident, West stepped back from music and immersed himself in fashion before returning to Hawaii to make his fifth album. He kept engineers at work around the clock, sleeping in increments. A writer for Complex, Noah Callahan-Bever, was present for the sessions and described the atmosphere as "communal", with collaborators including Jay-Z, Kid Cudi, Pusha T, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, and Gil Scott Heron all contributing.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was released in November 2010. Where 808s and Heartbreak had been spare, this record was enormous in scope, dealing in themes of celebrity and excess. It included the international hit "All of the Lights", the singles "Power" and "Monster", and "Runaway", which was accompanied by a thirty-five-minute film West directed and starred in. Critics widely called it his best work. Its omission from the Album of the Year category at the 54th Grammy Awards was described by several media outlets as a snub.

West's fashion ambitions had been running parallel to his music since the beginning of his career. In 2009, he became the first non-athlete to receive a shoe deal with Nike, releasing the Air Yeezys. That same year, he interned at Italian fashion brand Fendi in Rome, offering ideas for the men's collection. In fall 2009, he also introduced a shoe line through Louis Vuitton during Paris Fashion Week.

The Adidas Yeezy collaboration was formally confirmed on the 3rd of December 2013. In 2015, a Yeezy clothing line debuted in collaboration with Adidas. In June 2016, Adidas announced a long-term extension of the partnership. In May 2021, West signed a ten-year deal linking Yeezy with Gap Inc. Both partnerships would later unravel in 2022 following his antisemitic statements, with Adidas terminating the relationship in October of that year.

  • In late 2022, West made a series of antisemitic public statements that resulted in the termination of collaborations, sponsorships, and partnerships with Vogue, Universal Music Group, CAA, Balenciaga, Gap, and Adidas. Several former associates told Rolling Stone that he had expressed private fascination with Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany since the early 2000s, with one describing it as a "well-known but well-kept secret" among his inner circle.

In November 2022, he appeared at a dinner hosted by Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago beside Nick Fuentes, a white nationalist. The following month, in an appearance on Alex Jones's InfoWars, West praised Hitler, denied the Holocaust, and identified himself as a Nazi. He then posted a picture of a swastika entangled in a Star of David on Twitter, and his account was terminated. Twitter restored the account in July 2023, citing assurances from West that he would not post harmful content.

A 2023 report from the Anti-Defamation League found that West's antisemitic rhetoric had contributed to multiple instances of hate-speech vandalism, harassment, and violence across the United States. In December 2023, he issued a written apology for his antisemitic remarks on Instagram. In a subsequent interview, he said some of what he had said was "true" and argued that Black people cannot be antisemitic.

In February 2025, he declared his love for Hitler on Twitter and purchased local advertising during Super Bowl LIX that directed viewers to his website, where he was selling a swastika T-shirt. That May, he released a song titled "Heil Hitler". He subsequently stated he was "done with antisemitism" and asked for forgiveness.

In January 2026, West published a full-page paid advertisement in The Wall Street Journal in which he apologized for his antisemitic remarks. He said his outbursts had come from manic episodes caused by bipolar disorder in which he had "gravitated toward the most destructive symbol I could find, the swastika". He pledged accountability and treatment. Three months later, the British government blocked him from entering the UK, causing the Wireless Festival, where he had been booked to headline, to cancel the entire event. The Wall Street Journal noted that his "image as a public figure remains tainted" and that recovery would take time.

  • Rolling Stone has named six of West's albums among the 500 greatest of all time: The College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation, 808s and Heartbreak, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and Yeezus. The magazine also named him one of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. Time placed him on its list of the 100 most influential people in the world in both 2005 and 2015.

His philanthropic record includes co-founding the Kanye West Foundation in 2003 with his mother to combat dropout and illiteracy rates among underprivileged Chicago youth. After Donda West's death in 2007, it was renamed the Dr. Donda West Foundation and operated until 2011. In June 2020, in the wake of the murder of George Floyd, West donated $2 million between Floyd's family and the families of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, which included funding legal fees and establishing a 529 college tuition plan for Floyd's daughter.

In January 2019, West donated $10 million toward the completion of American artist James Turrell's Roden Crater, a large-scale artwork in an Arizona volcanic cone.

His musical influence is measurable in concrete terms: he is credited with opening hip-hop to artists who did not fit the gangsta rap mold, pioneering chipmunk soul production, and helping spark a broader revival of house and electro-influenced music in the late 2000s. A documentary capturing twenty-one years of his life, from his early days in Chicago through his mother's death and presidential run, was acquired by Netflix for $30 million and released in 2022 under the title Jeen-Yuhs. A second documentary, In Whose Name?, directed by Nico Ballesteros and shot over six years with a billion-dollar budget, was released on the 19th of September 2025. In April 2026, West performed two concerts at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, selling $33 million in ticket sales, marking his first performance in that city since 2021.
