  • Olivia Rodrigo was a teenager when one of her songs drew more than 15.7 million streams around the world in a single day, on the 11th of January 2021. The next day, the total passed 17 million. Looking back, she described it this way: "It's been the absolute craziest week of my life... My entire life just, like, shifted in an instant." Until then, Rodrigo was known mostly for television roles and a few commercials. Within a few years she would be headlining some of the biggest festival stages in the world. How does a child from a small California city end up with numbers like that? Who shaped the way she writes and sings? And what has she done with all that attention?

  • Olivia Isabel Rodrigo was born on the 20th of February 2003 at the Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta, California. Her mother, Jennifer, was a school teacher, and her father, Chris, was a family therapist. Rodrigo is an only child and grew up in neighboring Temecula. She was born half-deaf in her left ear. On the Awards Chatter podcast, she explained that she only found out around kindergarten, when hearing tests were given to all the kids.

Rodrigo is half-Filipina and identifies as Filipino American. Her paternal grandparents and great-grandparents emigrated from the Philippines, and the family follows Filipino traditions, including cooking. Her mother has German and Irish ancestry. Rodrigo was raised in a vegetarian household by her mother, though she has said she no longer follows a vegetarian diet. The family stereo leaned toward her parents' favorite alternative rock, including No Doubt, Pearl Jam, the White Stripes and Green Day.

At Lisa J. Mails Elementary School in Murrieta, Rodrigo joined the after-school musical theater program. When she was five, her parents signed her up for vocal lessons with Jennifer Dustman. Dustman began entering her in local singing competitions and advised her parents to enroll her in acting lessons too. Piano lessons followed at age nine. Rodrigo first became interested in songwriting after hearing country songs by Taylor Swift, and by age twelve she was playing guitar.

In May 2010, at age seven, Rodrigo first appeared onscreen in an Old Navy commercial. It was the first of many screen appearances, and the next one would be a leading role.

  • At age twelve, in 2015, Rodrigo made her acting debut as Grace Thomas, the lead of the direct-to-video film An American Girl: Grace Stirs Up Success. She then spent a year at Dorothy McElhinney Middle School in Murrieta. Her schooling changed in 2016, when she won a part in the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark and moved to Los Angeles. From then until she graduated in 2021, she was homeschooled.

In Bizaardvark, Rodrigo played Paige Olvera, a guitarist, for three seasons from 2016 to 2019. In 2017 she also appeared in an episode of New Girl titled "Young Adult," playing a character named Terrinea.

In February 2019, Rodrigo was cast as Nini Salazar-Roberts, the starring role in the Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The show premiered in November of that year. Joel Keller of Decider praised her performance, describing her as "especially magnetic." For the series, Rodrigo wrote and performed a promotional single, "All I Want," which came out in November 2019. She left the show at the end of its third season to focus on her music career.

Her next move would hinge on one clause in a contract: who would own her recordings.

  • Rodrigo signed with Geffen Records and negotiated her deal so that she, rather than the label, would own the masters of her music. On the 8th of January 2021, she released her debut single, "Drivers License," which she co-wrote with producer Dan Nigro. The song was critically acclaimed within days. It became the first song in history to reach 80 million streams on Spotify in seven days. It debuted at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and reached number one in numerous other countries.

On the 1st of April 2021, Rodrigo followed up with "Deja Vu," which debuted at number eight on the Hot 100. That made her the first artist to debut her first two releases in the top 10. The third single, "Good 4 U," arrived on the 14th of May 2021 and became her second to debut at number one. Her debut album, Sour, followed on the 21st of May 2021 to critical acclaim. It spent five weeks at number one on the US Billboard 200, the longest reign by a female artist's album in 2021.

Slate critic Chris Molanphy said the first three singles alone established her "early status as Gen-Z's most versatile new artist." Variety called her "the voice of her generation" in a cover story. In June 2021, Rodrigo premiered Sour Prom, a prom-themed concert film on YouTube. Three days later, Time named her Entertainer of the Year. On the 24th of December 2021, she shared on Instagram a snippet of a Christmas song called "The Bels," which she wrote and recorded at age five.

According to Billboard, Rodrigo closed 2021 as the bestselling singles artist worldwide. She placed eight songs on the year-end Global 200 chart, with "Drivers License" at number four, "Good 4 U" at number nine and "Deja Vu" at number 27. Sour and "Drivers License" were Spotify's most streamed album and song globally. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry ranked her the tenth bestselling artist of 2021 and Sour the second bestselling album.

Her first headlining tour, the Sour Tour, ran from April to July 2022 and visited the United States, Canada and Europe. In February 2022, she signed with Lighthouse Management + Media, working with Aleen Keshishian and Zack Morgenroth. The Disney+ documentary Olivia Rodrigo: Driving Home 2 U, about the making of Sour, was released on the 25th of March 2022. At the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, she received seven nominations. She won Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album for Sour, and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Drivers License."

By then she was already crafting a second album, and a poetry class at the University of Southern California would supply one of its songs.

  • The song "Lacy" began as a poetry homework piece, which Rodrigo repurposed for her second album, Guts. She wrote it in 2022 while attending that class. Guts was released on the 8th of September 2023 and debuted atop the Billboard 200. Rodrigo said the album was about "growing pains" and self-discovery. She felt she had grown "10 years" between the ages of 18 and 20. BBC News later declared it the most critically acclaimed album of 2023.

The lead single, "Vampire," came out on the 30th of June 2023. It was her third single to debut atop the Hot 100, and it made her the first artist ever to debut the lead singles from two career-opening albums at number one. The second single, "Bad Idea Right?," was released on the 11th of August 2023 and reached the top 10 in both the US and UK. On the 16th of August 2023, Rodrigo became the youngest artist to receive the BRIT Billion Award for passing one billion digital streams in the United Kingdom. She was the 19th artist to receive it.

On the 9th of October 2023, Rodrigo played songs from Guts at an exclusive concert with American Express at Los Angeles Theater at Ace Hotel. All ticket proceeds went to her nonprofit, Fund 4 Good. Nine days later, she announced that four secret tracks from limited vinyl editions of Guts would become a vinyl-exclusive EP for Record Store Day Black Friday. The EP, Guts: The Secret Tracks, ranked among the top sellers that day. On the 3rd of November, she released "Can't Catch Me Now" for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. It won a Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Original Song in a Sci-Fi, Fantasy or Horror Film.

The Guts World Tour ran from February 2024 to July 2025 and visited North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania. On the 22nd of March 2024, Rodrigo released a deluxe edition, Guts (Spilled), with five additional songs, including the four secret tracks. On the 13th of April 2024, she made a guest appearance at No Doubt's Coachella show. There she performed the band's 2000 single "Bathwater" alongside them, a nod to the music she grew up hearing. She announced a Guts World Tour concert film on the 2nd of October 2024, and it arrived on Netflix on the 29th of October.

By the summer of 2025 the tour was still running, and it was about to reach the biggest festival stage in Britain.

  • On the 7th of June 2025, Rodrigo headlined day two of the Governors Ball. She performed a cover of "Burning Down the House" with David Byrne, a founding member of Talking Heads. On the 27th of June she headlined the 2025 BST Hyde Park show, with The Last Dinner Party and Girl in Red in support. Two days later, she headlined the final day of Glastonbury Festival on the Pyramid Stage, her largest performance in the UK to date. Robert Smith of The Cure joined her to sing "Just Like Heaven" and "Friday I'm in Love."

On the 1st of August 2025, Rodrigo headlined the second day of Lollapalooza Chicago, where Weezer guested on "Buddy Holly" and "Say It Ain't So." She was also featured in the documentary Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery - The Untold Story, reflecting on the legacy of the all-female music festival. On the 9th of November, she teamed up with Feist for a rendition of "We're Going to Be Friends" by The White Stripes at the band's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

On the 2nd of April 2026, Rodrigo announced her third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, scheduled for release on the 12th of June. Its lead single, "Drop Dead," came out on the 17th of April 2026 and debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. That extended her record as the first artist to debut the lead singles from their first three albums at the top. The next day, she appeared as a surprise guest during Addison Rae's set at Coachella 2026 and debuted the single live.

On the 2nd of May 2026, Rodrigo appeared on Saturday Night Live as both host and musical guest. She performed "Drop Dead" and debuted another track, "Begged." "The Cure" followed on the 22nd of May as the album's second single.

On the 30th of April, she announced her third concert tour, the Unraveled Tour. It has 65 dates across North America and Europe, beginning on the 25th of September 2026 in Hartford and ending on the 2nd of May 2027 in Barcelona. Supporting acts include Devon Again, Die Spitz, Grace Ives, The Last Dinner Party and Wolf Alice.

  • Rodrigo has named Taylor Swift and Lorde as her idols and primary musical inspirations. She once called herself Swift's biggest fan "in the whole world." She later gave interpolation credits to Swift and Jack Antonoff on her song "1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back." She also retroactively credited Swift, Antonoff and Annie Clark on "Deja Vu." The White Stripes' album Elephant is the one she says she listens to most, and in 2022 she called band member Jack White her "hero of all heroes."

Rodrigo's voice type is soprano. Media outlets generally describe her music as pop, rock and folk, and it has been labeled everything from bedroom pop to pop-punk to power pop. She has said she wants to be a songwriter, not "the biggest pop star that ever lived." That is why she chose Interscope/Geffen Records, whose CEO John Janick praised her songwriting rather than her "potential star quality." Music journalist Laura Snapes called her a "flag-bearer" for songwriters whose power ballads project emotion inward, "trading bombast for hush."

The honors have piled up. Besides her three Grammys, Rodrigo has won seven Billboard Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, five iHeartRadio Music Awards and four People's Choice Awards. She has also won an American Music Award, a Brit Award and a Juno Award. Variety named her Songwriter of the Year for 2021 and Storyteller of the Year for 2023, and ASCAP named her Songwriter of the Year in 2022 and 2024. Rolling Stone called her "Gen Z's preeminent rock star." In March 2025, Billboard ranked her number 21 on its list of the top 100 women artists of the 21st century.

Sour was the most-streamed album of 2021, and four of that year's ten most-streamed songs came from it alone. As of May 2026, it is also the most-streamed album by a female artist on Spotify.

Her fame also reached beyond music, starting with a White House meeting on the 13th of July 2021.

  • After the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, Rodrigo performed at Glastonbury Festival with British singer Lily Allen. She dedicated the song to the five justices who voted to overturn the ruling. "I'm devastated and terrified," she told the crowd. "So many women and so many girls are going to die because of this."

In October 2023, Rodrigo launched a charity fund called Fund 4 Good, aimed at supporting women's reproductive healthcare. A portion of the profits from the US leg of the Guts World Tour went to the fund and supported the National Network of Abortion Funds. At her St. Louis concert on the 12th of March 2024, where abortion was illegal under state law, condoms and Plan B pills were distributed. A portion of the Canadian leg's profits supported 600 women's shelters in Canada, and on the European leg she donated to Women Against Violence Europe. In October 2024, she gave all net proceeds from her sold-out Philippines concert to Jhpiego, a women's health organization.

Her giving started long before that. On the 13th of July 2021, Rodrigo met President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Chief Medical Advisor Anthony Fauci for a White House effort to promote COVID-19 vaccinations among young people. In 2017 and 2018, she and her Bizaardvark co-star Madison Hu worked with Instagram's #KindComments to encourage kindness online. Their event for the youth charity My Friend's Place, hosted by Jack Black, raised over $740,000 to help homeless young people. In February 2021, her "Spicy Pisces T-shirts" raised money for the scholarship group She's the First. In June 2021, she sold her clothes and items from her music videos on Depop, with all proceeds going to charity.

Rodrigo endorsed Kamala Harris in the 2024 United States presidential election. In July 2025, she called conditions in Palestine during the Gaza war "horrific and completely unacceptable" and donated to UNICEF. In September 2025, she criticized ABC over the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel, calling it "blatant censorship and abuse of power." In November 2025, she objected when the Department of Homeland Security used her song "All-American Bitch" in a video without authorization. The soundtrack was later removed from the clip. In January 2026, she was announced as a contributor to the charity compilation Help(2) for War Child.

Her business partnerships have been just as varied. She became a brand ambassador for the phone accessory company Casetify in December 2021 and Glossier's first celebrity partner in April 2022. She worked with Sony Electronics on a special edition of its Linkbuds S earbuds in September 2023. In December 2023, she and Health-Ade launched the "Good 4 Ur Guts" smoothie, sold in Erewhon stores through the 14th of January 2024. She became Lancome's global brand ambassador in November 2024. In October 2025, she gave Platinum Card members of American Express an exclusive concert at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City. In January 2026, she appeared in Miu Miu's advertising campaign for its spring and summer 2026 collection.
