  • On the 31st of January 2026, Alexander Skarsgård stepped onto the stage of Saturday Night Live to host its 1,000th episode, with the rapper Cardi B as musical guest. The Swedish actor, born in 1976, is the son of a celebrated actor, and his career runs through vampire dramas, Norse epics and boardroom satire. Decades before that milestone, he had walked away from acting altogether. What brought him back after such an early exit? How does an actor move between Hollywood blockbusters, European arthouse films and prestige television without being pinned to one type? And what did a stint in the Swedish Navy have to do with any of it?

  • Alexander Johan Hjalmar Skarsgård was born in Stockholm on the 25th of August 1976, the eldest son of the actor Stellan Skarsgård and the physician My Skarsgård. His parents later divorced. He has five younger siblings named Gustaf, Sam, Bill, Eija and Valter, plus two half-brothers, Ossian and Kolbjörn, from his father's second wife, Megan Everett. Gustaf, Bill, Valter and Kolbjörn are also actors.

At the age of seven, a director who was a friend of his father's gave him his first film role. He played Kalle Nubb in Åke and His World, known in Swedish as Åke och hans värld. In 1989, a lead part in the Swedish television production Hunden som log, or The Dog That Smiled, earned him praise and made him a known face across Sweden at thirteen. The attention did not suit him. Uncomfortable with the fame, he quit acting at that same age. His next chapter would involve neither cameras nor stages, but a uniform.

  • At 19, Skarsgård applied for Swedish national service and spent 18 months in the Navy's SäkJakt unit, a name that translates as protect and hunt. The unit dealt with anti-sabotage and anti-terrorism work in the Stockholm archipelago. He completed his service in 1996 and left Sweden for England, where he spent six months at Leeds Metropolitan University. He enrolled to study English, but he admits he did little studying and "had a blast" instead. During that stay he considered a career in architecture before choosing acting.

In 1997 he enrolled in a theatre course at Marymount Manhattan College and moved to New York City. After six months he returned to Stockholm. The course had done its job, because it confirmed for him that acting was what he wanted. Leeds Metropolitan University would later award him an honorary degree, in July 2011.

  • Zoolander, released in 2001, gave Skarsgård his first American film role, playing a mindless model. He won the part at an audition while vacationing in the United States. Back in Sweden he was landing roles in film, television and theatre. In 2003, his performance in Hundtricket - the Movie, known in English as The Dog Trick, earned him a Guldbagge Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He was named the Sexiest Man in Sweden five times. In 2004 he moved to Los Angeles, though he kept working in Sweden.

The HBO miniseries Generation Kill gave him his break. It adapts a book of the same name by the journalist Evan Wright and follows the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion of the United States Marine Corps during the early part of the Iraq War. Skarsgård was cast as the Marine Brad Colbert. Director Susanna White wanted him, but executive producer David Simon doubted he could deliver a convincing American accent.

After four auditions in three cities, Skarsgård learned the role was his only 36 hours before his flight to Namibia, where the production was filming. The cast and crew spent seven months in the desert, shooting six days a week. He worked with a dialect coach to master the accent. Just before he left, he heard about a new HBO series about vampires.

  • True Blood, an HBO series based on Charlaine Harris's novels The Southern Vampire Mysteries, follows humans and vampires living side by side in a town in Louisiana. Skarsgård was at first reluctant to play a vampire. Then he learned that the screenwriter Alan Ball was behind the project. He was a fan of Ball's series Six Feet Under and film American Beauty, so he sent in an audition tape for the role of Bill Compton.

That part went to Stephen Moyer. Skarsgård was cast instead as Eric Northman, a 1,000-year-old Nordic vampire who first appeared in the fourth episode of the first season. The role brought him to prominence. To shape it, he studied the work of the actors Max Schreck and Bela Lugosi and the 1922 film Nosferatu. He said the part appealed to his preference for characters who are not simply diabolical or righteous. True Blood ran on HBO from 2008 to 2014, drew mixed reviews and gave him 76 episodes as Northman.

In 2009 he appeared in the music video for Lady Gaga's Paparazzi and voiced Stefan in the animated film Metropia, directed by Tarik Saleh. The next year he played Terje, a gay Norwegian trekking to the North Pole, in the British mockumentary Beyond the Pole. The suit-maker Hickey Freeman chose him to model a new look it debuted in 2010. Annie Leibovitz photographed the campaign, which appeared in The Wall Street Journal Magazine, GQ and Details. In September 2010 he shared the cover of Rolling Stone with his True Blood co-stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer. The following year, he would be walking a red carpet at Cannes.

  • Melancholia, directed by Lars von Trier, premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Skarsgård played a newlywed opposite Kirsten Dunst as his wife, and his father also appears in the cast. That same year he played Charlie Venner in Straw Dogs, a remake of the 1971 film. Director Rod Lurie moved the setting from Cornwall to Mississippi and described Venner as "an ex-football star gone to seed". The film, which also starred James Marsden and Kate Bosworth, was released on the 16th of September 2011.

Battleship, in 2012, teamed him with Taylor Kitsch and Rihanna under director Peter Berg. It adapted the Hasbro game of the same name. Critics reviewed it negatively, and it performed dismally at the box office. The same year brought quieter work. In What Maisie Knew, an adaptation of the Henry James novel, he appeared with Julianne Moore and Steve Coogan. In the thriller Disconnect, he played opposite Paula Patton. In 2013 he starred alongside Brit Marling and Elliot Page in The East.

The Diary of a Teenage Girl, released in August 2015, cast him as a man who begins an affair with his girlfriend's underage daughter. He worked to find nuance in the character's predatory quality, and he said he was excited to play the man "without justifying or condoning" his behavior. In 2016 he took the title role in The Legend of Tarzan, opposite Margot Robbie as Jane, after working out for seven months. The film earned mixed reviews, with praise for his performance, but it did not succeed at the box office. That year he also played a deviant policeman in the black comedy War on Everyone. Television, not film, would bring him his biggest prize the following year.

  • From 2017 to 2019, Skarsgård played Perry Wright, the abusive husband of Nicole Kidman's character Celeste, in the drama series Big Little Lies. He described Perry as violent because of internal conflicts, including insecurity about needing his wife. Reviewing the first-season finale, Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter found the performance "utterly chilling". The series earned universal acclaim. Skarsgård won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie in 2017, and a Golden Globe Award followed.

Mute, a science-fiction film released in February 2018, cast him as a silent bartender in a futuristic society. Later that year he played a secretive man in The Little Drummer Girl, a miniseries about political violence in Europe in 1979, which received positive reviews. In 2019 he played a sensitive German architect in The Aftermath, set in Hamburg in 1946. He also played the prime minister of Canada in the romantic comedy Long Shot. Kristy Puchko of The Guardian praised him in that minor role, saying he "makes a meal out of it". Released in May 2019, the film was unsuccessful commercially.

The Stand, a CBS All Access miniseries based on Stephen King's 1978 novel, ran from December 2020 to February 2021. Skarsgård played Randall Flagg, a charming demon. Godzilla vs. Kong followed in 2021 and earned positive reviews and commercial success. That year he also began recurring in the third season of Succession as the tech mogul Lukas Matsson, which brought a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

The Northman, released in April 2022, cast him as Amleth, and he also produced the film. Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair called him "a fine vessel for the film's opulent menace". In 2023 he starred in the thriller Infinity Pool and returned as Matsson for the fourth and final season of Succession. That role earned a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. In 2025 he took the title role in the science-fiction comedy Murderbot on Apple TV+, which continues to air. He also played a sexually dominant gay biker in the British film Pillion. That year the Stockholm International Film Festival gave him its Stockholm Achievement Award, for showing a rare ability to move seamlessly between Hollywood productions, European arthouse and award-winning television.

  • On the 13th of December 2013, Skarsgård reached the South Pole as the American team's ambassador for a Walking with the Wounded fundraising event for wounded soldiers. His team set out against Team UK, with Prince Harry as ambassador, and Team Canada and Australia, with the actor Dominic West as ambassador. A few days into the trek, hazardous terrain and weather led to the decision to cancel the competition. The teams combined forces, and all three reached the pole together.

Hammarby Fotboll, a club based in Stockholm, has his support as a football fan. In October 2010 he donated several autographed items to Bajen Aid, the club's fundraising auction. He is also an atheist.

Skarsgård lived in the United States for 20 years. He began in New York, spent the years of filming True Blood in Los Angeles, and then moved back to New York. In 2023 he relocated to Stockholm. He has a son, born in 2022, with the Swedish actress Tuva Novotny, who lives in Denmark.
