The Weeknd

  • The Weeknd is the stage name of Abel Tesfaye, a Canadian singer-songwriter born on the 16th of February 1990. The spelling is deliberate. Tesfaye chose the name because he had left home on a weekend, then dropped the last 'e' to avoid trademark trouble with a Canadian pop rock band called the Weekend. It is a fitting origin for an artist who began by withholding his identity. His earliest songs surfaced online with no face and no real name attached. Years later he would be playing stadiums, starring on screen and making headlines for reasons beyond the music. How does an anonymous uploader from the suburbs of Ontario become one of the most-streamed artists of all time? What does his sound borrow from, and from whom? And what happens when that much attention arrives?

  • Makkonen Tesfaye and Samrawit Hailu, Ethiopian immigrants to Canada, separated shortly after the birth of their only child. That child, Abel, was born in an Ontario city reported variously as Toronto or Scarborough. His mother and grandmother raised him in the suburb of Scarborough. He grew up speaking Amharic, and a French immersion school made him fluent in French. His later schooling took place at West Hill Collegiate Institute and Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute.

The patronymic on his birth name, Makkonen, is spelled differently from the traditional Ethiopian form, Makonnen. Its resemblance to a Finnish surname is pure coincidence. The odd spelling might come from a typographic error or from a new variant of the old name. In 2024 he legally removed his middle name altogether.

At seventeen, Tesfaye dropped out of school and moved into an apartment in the neighbourhood of Parkdale with two friends. One of them, La Mar Taylor, remains his best friend and is now his creative director. Their lifestyle was hedonistic. Tesfaye has described drugs as a "crutch" when he wrote music, naming ketamine, cocaine, MDMA, magic mushrooms and cough syrup. He also experienced homelessness and was incarcerated on several occasions. Those years, he says, pushed him to "smarten up, to focus".

Before the Weeknd, he performed as Kin Kane in a hip-hop duo called Bulleez n Nerdz. He also belonged to a production team called the Noise. Neither project carried the name that would later make him known.

  • In August 2009, Tesfaye began releasing music on YouTube without saying who he was. A party the following year put him in the same room as the producer Jeremy Rose, who heard him freestyle over an instrumental. Rose asked whether he wanted to build a dark R&B project together. They recorded several songs, then parted over creative differences. Tesfaye could keep the material on one condition, that Rose receive production credits.

In December 2010, three songs appeared on YouTube under the username xoxxxoooxo. They were "What You Need", "Loft Music" and "The Morning". The uploader's identity stayed secret, yet the songs spread. The rapper Drake acknowledged them in a blog post, and outlets including Pitchfork and The New York Times followed.

In 2011, Tesfaye met the music executives Wassim "Sal" Slaiby and Amir "Cash" Esmailian. Together with Taylor, the four founded the XO record label. The first mixtape, House of Balloons, came out on the 21st of March 2011, with production from Illangelo and Doc McKinney. It also held tracks that Rose had produced, although Rose received no production credit. It was one of ten nominees shortlisted for that year's Polaris Music Prize.

Tesfaye began working with Drake in May 2011, and on the 31st of July he earned a place at Drake's OVO Fest. That same month he gave his first live performance, at the Mod Club Theatre in Toronto. The show drew press attention partly because Drake was in the audience. His song "High For This" also reached American viewers through an ad campaign for the final season of HBO's Entourage. The second mixtape, Thursday, followed on the 18th of August. On the 15th of November, Drake's album Take Care appeared with four contributions from Tesfaye, including a featured spot on "Crew Love". The third mixtape, Echoes of Silence, arrived on the 21st of December and was long-listed for the 2012 Polaris Music Prize.

In April 2012, he played Coachella and two sold-out shows at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City. European festivals followed, including Primavera Sound in Spain and Portugal and the Wireless Festival in the United Kingdom. In September 2012 he signed with Republic Records, which took on XO as a subsidiary label. His first concert tour, the Fall Tour, combined headlining shows with opening slots for the English band Florence and the Machine. On the 13th of November 2012 he released Trilogy, which gathered remixed and remastered versions of the three mixtapes plus three additional tracks. It debuted at number four on the US Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 86,000 copies. The RIAA later certified it platinum, and Music Canada certified it double platinum. Trilogy also earned a nomination in the BBC's Sound of 2013 poll, which looked ahead to the year his first studio album would arrive.

  • On the 10th of September 2013, Kiss Land became Tesfaye's debut studio album and entered the Billboard 200 at number two with 96,000 copies. Reviews were generally positive. That autumn he toured North America and England. In early 2014 he opened the European leg of Drake's Would You Like a Tour? Soundtrack work included two songs for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, among them "Elastic Heart" with Sia and Diplo.

A guest turn on Ariana Grande's "Love Me Harder" peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2014. On the 23rd of December 2014, he released "Earned It" for the soundtrack of Fifty Shades of Grey. It peaked at number three and brought his first and only Academy Award nomination, for Best Original Song. At the 58th Annual Grammy Awards it won Best R&B Performance.

The year 2015 produced his first number ones. "Can't Feel My Face" reached the top of the Hot 100 after debuting at number twenty-four, and "The Hills" followed it there. The RIAA later made "The Hills" his first diamond-certified record. At one point he held all three slots on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, the first artist to do so. Beauty Behind the Madness arrived on the 28th of August 2015 and opened at number one on the Billboard 200 with 412,000 album-equivalent units. It also reached number one in Canada, Australia, Norway and the United Kingdom. With over 60 million streams, it was the most-streamed album of 2015, and it sold 1.5 million copies worldwide. It won Best Urban Contemporary Album and was nominated for Album of the Year.

The title track of Starboy, featuring Daft Punk, was released on the 21st of September 2016. It debuted at number 40 and climbed to number one. The album came out on the 25th of November and debuted at number one with 348,000 units. It won Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards, his second win in that category. On the 30th of March 2018, his debut extended play, My Dear Melancholy, also topped the Billboard 200 with 169,000 units. It was the shortest album by track count to reach the top in eight years.

On the 27th of November 2019, "Heartless" arrived as the lead single from After Hours and went to number one. Two days later came "Blinding Lights", which debuted at number eleven and also reached number one. It became the first song in the chart's history to hold a top-ten spot for an entire year. At 90 weeks, it was the longest-charting song by a solo artist on the Hot 100. On the 23rd of November 2021, Billboard ranked it the best-performing song in the chart's history, ahead of "The Twist" by Chubby Checker. By the 1st of January 2023 it had become the most-streamed song on Spotify, with 3.3 billion streams.

After Hours itself debuted at number one on the 20th of March 2020 with 444,000 units. In its first charting week Tesfaye became the first artist to lead the Billboard 200, the Hot 100, the Artist 100, the Hot 100 Songwriters and the Hot 100 Producers charts simultaneously. On the 7th of February 2021, he headlined the Super Bowl LV halftime show, the first Canadian solo artist to do so. He reportedly spent US$7 million of his own money on it. Toronto's mayor, John Tory, declared that date Weeknd Day.

Dawn FM, released on the 7th of January 2022, debuted at number two with 148,000 units. He set a record for a male soloist on the Billboard Global 200, with twenty-four songs on the chart at once. His After Hours til Dawn Tour, which ran from 2022 to 2026, became the highest-grossing tour by a male soloist in history. In 2023, "Die for You", a song from 2016, found new life, and a remix with Ariana Grande hit number one on the chart dated the 11th of March. On the 31st of January 2025, Hurry Up Tomorrow opened at number one with 490,500 units, including 359,000 in pure album sales. It was his fifth chart-topping album in the United States. Estimates now put his sales above 75 million units, and the RIAA has certified eight of his singles diamond. On the 30th of December 2025, he became the first artist on Spotify with thirty songs that each passed one billion streams.

  • Michael Jackson, Prince and R. Kelly are the three artists Tesfaye names as his main inspirations. Jackson's music pushed him toward singing, and he points to the lyrics of "Dirty Diana" as an example. Ethiopian singers such as Aster Aweke shaped his high-flying vocal style. The 2002 video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, he says, opened his eyes to 1980s music. He told Billboard, "I've always had an admiration for the era before I was born." Siouxsie and the Banshees and Cocteau Twins, he added, play a huge role in the sound of his first mixtape. Deftones influenced the making of all three mixtapes. When Daft Punk announced their split in 2021, he said, "Those guys are one of the reasons I make music."

Critics describe his songs as "built around a fogged, crepuscular production", with slow tempos, rumbling bass and forlorn echoes. The samples he chooses are unusual for R&B, drawing on punk, shoegaze, dream pop and alternative rock. Marc Hogan of Spin noted sources such as Beach House, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Aaliyah. Ian Cohen of Pitchfork credited Tesfaye's main producers, Illangelo and Doc McKinney, with developing "a state-of-the-art R&B template" alongside him. Lyrically, the songs dwell on hurt, sex, drugs and partying. Paul MacInnes of The Guardian read the three mixtapes as "a rough trajectory of party, after-party and hangover". Tesfaye says that singing vulgar lyrics in an elegant, sexy way is his homage to R. Kelly and, to a degree, Prince.

His singing often sits in a falsetto register. He is a light-lyric tenor whose range spans more than three octaves, from a low F2 to a high G5. J. D. Considine heard a tremulous quality like Michael Jackson's, but with Arabic-influenced melisma in place of Jackson's grounding in the blues. Hannah Giogis of Pitchfork traced his trademark vibrato to a long Ethiopian tradition of pained longing. In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked him number 110 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. Asked about the alternative R&B label by Time in 2015, he answered, "Alternative R&B is in my soul. It's not going anywhere."

  • On the 30th of August 2019, at the Telluride Film Festival, Tesfaye made his acting debut in Uncut Gems, playing himself. Voice work followed. He guest-starred on American Dad! in an episode he also co-wrote, and he voiced three characters in the 200th episode of Robot Chicken. In March 2022 he appeared in an episode of The Simpsons.

His largest screen role came with The Idol, an HBO drama he co-created with Sam Levinson. He starred opposite Lily-Rose Depp. The series premiered out of competition at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where its graphic nudity and sexual material caused significant controversy. Reviews were widely negative. The Hollywood Reporter called it "regressive rather than transgressive", and Tesfaye's acting drew harsh notices of its own.

On the 1st of March 2023, before the premiere, Rolling Stone published an exposé on conditions behind the scenes. The original director, Amy Seimetz, had exited with roughly 80 percent of the six-episode series finished. Reports said the show was overhauled because Tesfaye felt it had too much of a female perspective. More than 14 crew members alleged a toxic work environment. One said, "It went from satire to the thing it was satirizing." Tesfaye answered by posting a clip in which characters ask, "Rolling Stone? Aren't they a little irrelevant?" Critics pointed out that his 2011 song "Rolling Stone" had boasted about being recognized by the magazine. In an interview with Vanity Fair, he blamed scheduling difficulties with Seimetz and production timelines, along with a wish not to rush his first show. On the 28th of August 2023, HBO announced it had cancelled the series after one season.

On the 8th of June 2023, Tesfaye announced a series of EPs of music from the show, each released after an episode premiered. Collaborators included Future, Playboi Carti, Madonna, Lil Baby, Lily-Rose Depp and Jennie of the South Korean group Blackpink. The EPs produced the hits "Popular" and "One of the Girls".

The companion film Hurry Up Tomorrow, starring Tesfaye alongside Jenna Ortega and directed by Trey Edward Shults, opened on the 16th of May 2025. It grossed $7.6 million against a $15 million budget. Brandon Yu of The New York Times called the psychological thriller "all style and no substance", and IndieWire labeled it one of the "worst vanity projects ever made". A further film credit, Rolling Loud: The Movie, is listed for 2026.

  • In December 2015, the firm Cutting Edge Music sued Tesfaye, alleging that the bassline of "The Hills" came from the score of the 2013 science fiction film The Machine. In September 2018, he and Daft Punk were sued over the rhythm of "Starboy", which the plaintiffs said was taken from the Ethiopian poet and singer-songwriter Yasminah. Tesfaye denied the allegations.

In April 2019, three British musicians, William Smith, Brian Clover and Scott McCulloch, sued over "A Lonely Night", seeking $150,000 from Tesfaye and Belly. A court dismissed the case in August 2019 with an option to amend, finding no showing of access or substantial similarity. The plaintiffs filed an amended claim in September 2019, and it remains in litigation. In February 2020, the band Yeasayer claimed that "Pray for Me" used an unauthorized sample of their song "Sunrise", then voluntarily dropped the suit later that year. In September 2021, the producers Suniel Fox and Henry Strange sued over "Call Out My Name", calling it strikingly similar to their 2015 track "Vibeking".

In January 2019, the single "Lost in the Fire", made with Gesaffelstein, drew criticism for its second verse. Critics called the lines homophobic and accused them of fetishizing bisexuality. Tesfaye responded obliquely on "Snowchild", singing, "Every month another accusation / Only thing I'm phobic of is failing".

His rift with Drake began in 2019, when Tesfaye disapproved of Drake's friendship with his ex-girlfriend, Bella Hadid. The two settled it in 2022, a year after Drake defended Tesfaye's decision not to submit music for Grammy consideration. On the 22nd of March 2024, the feud reignited when Tesfaye guested on Future and Metro Boomin's album We Still Don't Trust You. On the track "All to Myself" he thanked God that he "never signed his life away", a reference to Drake's label, OVO Sound. Drake later pulled Tesfaye into his wider feuds with Metro Boomin and Kendrick Lamar.

In November 2020, the 63rd Grammy nominations came out without a single mention of Tesfaye, despite the success of After Hours. He tweeted, "The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency..." Rolling Stone reported that talks about a ceremony performance had collapsed because he was also booked for the Super Bowl halftime show. Recording Academy president Harvey Mason Jr. said that voting had ended before that booking was announced. Days later Tesfaye said, "I personally don't care anymore." Halsey, whose 2020 album Manic also received no nominations, spoke out in solidarity with him.

  • In June 2018, Tesfaye launched Memento Mori, a radio show on Apple Music 1, then known as Beats 1. The first episode aired on the 8th of June while he was living in Paris. Guests hosted their own episodes and built playlists, and songs that inspired his albums during recording filled the rest. The ninth episode, on the 13th of August 2020, celebrated Kiss Land and included unreleased tracks and a Lana Del Rey collaboration.

After receiving a Bikila Award in 2014, Tesfaye gave CA$50,000 to the University of Toronto to fund a course on Ge'ez, the classical language of Ethiopia. In May 2016, during Orthodox Easter, he gave CA$50,000 to St. Mary Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Cathedral in Toronto, a church he attended growing up. In June 2017, he donated US$100,000 to the Suubi Health Center, a maternity and children's facility in Budondo, Uganda. In April 2020, he sold face masks for the MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund and gave US$500,000 to MusiCares and CA$500,000 to the Scarborough Health Network. A month later he gave US$500,000 across the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Colin Kaepernick's Know Your Rights Camp and the National Bail Out. His interactive TikTok concert on the 7th of August 2020 drew two million total viewers, 275,000 of them at the same moment. It raised over US$350,000 for the Equal Justice Initiative.

On the 4th of April 2021, Tesfaye announced a US$1,000,000 donation through the United Nations World Food Programme to relief efforts for people affected by the Tigray War in Ethiopia. He was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for the programme on the 7th of October 2021. In March 2022, he launched the XO Humanitarian Fund, pledging US$1 from every ticket sold on his After Hours til Dawn Tour plus US$500,000. Some $2,500,000 from the fund went to the programme's response in the Gaza Strip, providing four million emergency meals. In April 2024, he announced a further $2 million for bread in Gaza. In November 2025, he gave $350,000 toward the response to Hurricane Melissa.

In 2016, he became a creative collaborator and global brand ambassador for Puma. In 2019, he became an owner and global ambassador of the esports company OverActive Media. Since 2023, he has run Samra Origins, a specialty coffee brand with Blue Bottle Coffee, named after his mother and inspired by his Ethiopian heritage. In December 2023, Fortnite named him the headlining artist of its Fortnite Festival mode. In December 2025, he secured a $1 billion deal with Lyric Capital that put his catalogue into a joint venture while preserving his freedom to use the publishing and masters' rights. His entrepreneurial initiative Black HXOUSE, launched in 2020 with TD Bank, has a counterpart in education. On the 22nd of January 2026, HXOUSE announced a partnership with Point Park University for a Creative Direction Credential Program for young artists in Pittsburgh, which began in March.
