  • Blackpink became the first artist in the world to pass 100 million subscribers on YouTube, reaching that mark on the 20th of February 2026. The platform marked the occasion with a custom Red Diamond Creator Award. The group behind that number is four young women who were recruited by YG Entertainment, a South Korean label, and who spent years in a strict training system before anyone outside the company knew their names. How did a lineup assembled from auditions in places as far apart as Thailand and Australia end up at the top of global pop? Why did the debut they were promised in 2012 take until 2016? And what did critics mean when they called the group an ambassador of an idea known as girl crush? The answers start in a dormitory in Seoul and end on some of the largest stages in the world.

  • YG Entertainment opened worldwide tryouts in 2010 for preteen and teenage recruits, hoping to build a new girl group one year after its first major act, 2NE1, arrived. Those who passed entered a life that the future members later described in vivid terms. Jennie called it "more strict than school". Rosé likened it to The X Factor with dorm rooms. Recruits who had left their lives outside South Korea found the pace of training even harder because of culture shock.

Lisa was the only one of 4,000 applicants in Thailand to pass the 2010 YG audition, and in 2011 she became the label's first foreign trainee. Jennie had joined in 2010 after moving back to South Korea from New Zealand. Jisoo started as a trainee in July 2011. Rosé placed first among 700 applicants at the 2012 audition in Australia, then signed a trainee contract and moved to Seoul.

On the 14th of November 2011, the label announced that a new girl group would debut in the first half of 2012 and would have at least seven members. The debut did not arrive. Stories and rumors about a delay multiplied, even though the company released no official information. Only on the 18th of May 2016 did YG Entertainment confirm a debut that July, saying the members had survived years of stiff competition. The label also confirmed that Jang Hanna and Moon Sua, earlier introduced to the public as possible members, were not in the lineup.

In 2012, Jennie starred in the music video for G-Dragon's "That XX", and Rosé featured on his track "Without You", credited only as "? from YG New Girl Group". Lisa appeared in Taeyang's "Ringa Linga" video in 2013. Jisoo turned up in Epik High's "Spoiler + Happy Ending" video in 2014 and made a cameo in the 2015 drama The Producers. The label also teased the public with a photo of Jennie titled "Who's that girl?" on the 10th of April 2012, and with a May 2012 video of Lisa titled "Who's that girl???".

During June 2016, YG Entertainment revealed one member every week. Jennie, the main rapper and lead vocalist, came first on the 1st of June. Lisa, a main rapper and main dancer, followed on the 8th. Jisoo, a lead vocalist, appeared on the 15th. Rosé, the main vocalist and lead dancer, closed the series on the 22nd. On the 29th of June, the label confirmed that the group would have four members instead of the nine once planned, and it announced the name Blackpink.

A label representative said the name meant "pretty isn't everything" and described a team with beauty and also great talent. Jisoo later told a press conference that Pink Punk, Baby Monster and Magnum had been considered. The group's first dance practice video, released on the 6th of July, drew a wave of public attention before a single song had been released.

  • YG Entertainment confirmed on the 29th of July 2016 that Blackpink would debut on the 8th of August. They were the first girl group to debut under the label in seven years. Their single album Square One carried two songs, "Boombayah" and "Whistle", which took the number one and number two spots on Billboard's World Digital Song Sales chart. No act had reached that position faster. Only Psy and BigBang had previously put YG artists in the top two places at once. In South Korea, "Whistle" swept the music charts and opened at number one on the Gaon Digital Chart.

Their first music show appearance aired on the 14th of August 2016 on SBS's Inkigayo. Fourteen days after their debut, they won first place on that same program. A second Inkigayo win on the 11th of September ended the promotions for Square One.

On the 1st of November 2016, the group followed with Square Two, a single album with "Playing with Fire" and "Stay". "Playing with Fire" became their second number one on the World Digital Song Sales chart and the first K-pop girl group song to enter the Billboard Canadian Hot 100. At home it peaked at number three, while "Stay" reached the top ten. Rookie awards poured in from the Asia Artist Awards, Melon Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, Seoul Music Awards and Gaon Chart Music Awards. Billboard also named them one of the best new K-pop groups of 2016.

On the 17th of January 2017, the group named its fandom "Blink", a blend of the words black and pink. Their first standalone digital single, "As If It's Your Last", arrived on the 22nd of June 2017. Jisoo explained that it shifted away from the "black" concept of earlier releases toward a brighter "pink" one. It reached number three on the Gaon Digital Chart and became their third number one on World Digital Song Sales. Its video set a record as the most-liked by a Korean girl group on YouTube and as the most-viewed K-pop group video in its first 24 hours.

On the 20th of July 2017, a showcase at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo drew more than 14,000 people, while as many as 200,000 tried to buy tickets. Blackpink made their Japanese debut on the 30th of August with a self-titled EP of Japanese versions of earlier singles. It topped the Oricon Albums Chart, making them only the third foreign artist to do so with a debut release. That summer, "As If It's Your Last" also landed among YouTube's Global Top 25 Songs of the Summer.

  • On the 6th of January 2018, Blackpink released the first episode of Blackpink House, their first reality show. Twelve episodes appeared over the year on V Live and YouTube, following the four members through 100 days of vacation in a new dorm. In March, the Japanese debut EP returned as Re:Blackpink, and its physical edition added a DVD of their music videos plus six Korean-language songs.

On the 15th of June 2018, the group released Square Up, their first Korean-language EP. It opened at number one on the Gaon Album Chart and earned a platinum certification for 250,000 units. It also debuted at number 40 on the Billboard 200, the highest placement for a female Korean group at that time. Its lead single, "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du", reached number one on the Gaon Digital Chart, while "Forever Young" peaked at number two.

In the United States, "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 55, passing the mark set by Wonder Girls' "Nobody" in 2009. It made Blackpink the first Korean girl group on the US Streaming Songs chart, and in August 2019 it earned a gold certification from the RIAA. In Britain it entered the UK Singles Chart at number 78, a first for a female Korean group.

The video for "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" drew 36.2 million views in 24 hours, a record for a Korean act and the second-biggest first day for any music video at the time. In November 2019 it became the first K-pop group video to pass one billion views. It passed two billion in January 2023. Gallup Korea's 2018 public survey named it Song of the Year.

On the 24th of December 2018, the group played the Kyocera Dome Osaka to a sold-out crowd of 50,000, a late addition to a Japan arena tour that had already needed an extra show in Chiba. Their first Seoul concert, at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena, opened the In Your Area World Tour. The tour crossed North America, Europe, Oceania and Asia into early 2020 and became the highest-grossing tour by a Korean girl group.

On the 19th of October 2018, Dua Lipa released "Kiss and Make Up" with Blackpink. It reached number 36 in Britain, the first top-40 hit there for a female Korean group. The British Phonographic Industry gave it a silver certification, the first for a Korean group in the United Kingdom. On the 23rd of October, the group signed with Interscope Records in a global partnership with YG Entertainment, with Interscope and Universal Music Group handling their work outside Asia.

Blackpink made their American debut on the 9th of February 2019 at the Grammy Artist Showcase, an invite-only event in Downtown Los Angeles. Appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Good Morning America followed, and in March they became the first K-pop girl group on a Billboard cover. Their EP Kill This Love arrived on the 5th of April 2019. Its video drew 56.7 million views in 24 hours, a new record, and the EP debuted at number 24 on the Billboard 200.

On the 12th and the 19th of April 2019, the group played Coachella, the first female K-pop group to do so. Gab Ginsberg of Billboard called the show "electrifying" and "unforgettable". Four years later, the same festival would hand them an even bigger role.

  • On the 22nd of April 2020, Lady Gaga confirmed that Blackpink would appear on her album Chromatica. Their collaboration, "Sour Candy", was released on the 28th of May and debuted at number 33 on the Hot 100. That gave Blackpink their first US top-40 hit and the highest-charting song by a Korean girl group in the country. It also opened at number eight in Australia and number 17 in the United Kingdom.

The single "How You Like That" arrived on the 26th of June 2020 and spent three weeks at number one on the Gaon Digital Chart. Its video drew 86.3 million views in its first 24 hours and brought five Guinness World Records, including one for 1.66 million peak concurrent viewers at the live premiere. The song won Song of Summer at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, a first for a Korean female act.

On the 28th of August 2020, "Ice Cream", made with Selena Gomez, debuted and peaked at number 13 on the Hot 100, beating the group's own record for a Korean female act. Its debut at number 39 in Britain gave Blackpink five top-40 songs there, more than any Korean artist at the time.

On the 2nd of October 2020, the group released The Album, their first Korean studio album, with "Lovesick Girls" as its main single. It sold 590,000 copies in a single day, a record for a Korean girl group, and about 1.2 million in under a month. That made Blackpink the first million-selling K-pop girl group. The IFPI ranked it the fifth best-selling album worldwide for 2020. It peaked at number two on both the Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart, and it carried the group to number one on the Billboard Artist 100, a first for a girl group.

Blackpink: Light Up the Sky premiered on Netflix on the 14th of October 2020. The documentary covered the four years since debut and used footage from their training days, home visits, behind-the-scenes moments and interviews. Together with the album, it helped Blackpink top Bloomberg's Pop Star Power Ranking for October, the first Korean artist to do so since the ranking began that April.

A livestream concert called The Show, planned with YouTube Music for the 27th of December 2020, was moved to the 31st of January 2021 because of new COVID-19 rules in South Korea. More than 280,000 people bought memberships to watch, and the broadcast reached 100 countries. It included Rosé's song "Gone", from her solo single album R, the first of the individual projects the label had promised.

  • From the 22nd to the 30th of July 2022, Blackpink held a virtual concert inside the game PUBG Mobile, called The Virtual. It previewed a special track, "Ready for Love", which was released in full with an animated video on the 29th of July. The experiment paid off at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, where The Virtual won Best Metaverse Performance.

On the 19th of August 2022, the group released "Pink Venom". It topped the Billboard Global 200 for two weeks, the first girl group to hold that spot and the first Korean song to stay there for multiple weeks. It also became the first song by a Korean group to top Australia's ARIA Singles Chart. On the 28th of August, Blackpink performed it at the MTV Video Music Awards, the first female K-pop group to perform at the show.

Born Pink arrived on the 16th of September 2022 with the single "Shut Down", which gave them a second Global 200 number one. The album sold 2,141,281 copies in under two days, making it the first album by a K-pop girl group to pass two million. It also debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, the first album by a female Korean act to do so. No female group had managed that since Danity Kane's Welcome to the Dollhouse in 2008. It also topped the UK Albums Chart, a first for a K-pop girl group. The IFPI listed it as the eighth best-selling album worldwide in 2022.

The Born Pink World Tour opened in Seoul on the 15th of October 2022. It gave the first live airings to the members' solo releases: R by Rosé and Lalisa by Lisa, both from 2021, plus Me by Jisoo and "You & Me" by Jennie, both from 2023. On the 28th of January 2023, the group performed in Paris at a charity gala hosted by Brigitte Macron, joined by Gautier Capuçon and Daniel Lozakovich.

On the 15th and the 22nd of April 2023, Blackpink headlined Coachella, the first Asian act ever to do so. On the 2nd of July, they became the first Korean band to headline a major UK festival, at British Summer Time Hyde Park in London. An encore stadium run then made them the first Korean girl group to play a European stadium, and the third female act after Beyoncé and Taylor Swift to sell out back-to-back shows at MetLife Stadium.

The tour ended with two Seoul concerts on the 17th of September 2023, after drawing 1.8 million attendees. Its worldwide gross of $330 million passed the record held by the Spice Girls' Spice World - 2019 Tour, making it the highest-grossing tour ever by a female group and by an Asian act. In December 2023, YG Entertainment confirmed that all four members had renewed their contracts for group activities.

The Deadline World Tour began on the 5th of July 2025 at Goyang Stadium and later brought Blackpink to London's Wembley Stadium, a first for a K-pop girl group. Their comeback single "Jump" was released on the 11th of July through a new partnership with the Orchard, replacing Interscope. It became their third Global 200 chart-topper and made them the female act with the most number ones on the Global Excl. US chart.

The EP Deadline followed on the 27th of February 2026, led by the single "Go". It sold 1,461,785 copies on its first day on the Hanteo Chart, a K-pop girl group record, and 1,774,577 in its first week. It entered the Circle Album Chart at number one, the group's sixth, and opened at number eight on the Billboard 200.

  • Time summed up Blackpink's music as a fusion of "bold rapping, powerful singing and chic styling". The base is EDM and pop, mixed with hip-hop and trap, though the catalogue also touches R&B, Arabic music, ballads, disco and rock. Critics point to one signature move above the rest, a bass drop placed just before the chorus. The Korea Herald summed up the sound as "grand intros, thumping bass and trap-EDM choruses". Rosé sings in a soprano range, while Jisoo has been described as a mezzo-soprano.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Jisoo said the members are "involved from the beginning" of the creative process. She described the work as "building the blocks" and trading feedback. Their lyrics return often to independence, female empowerment, breakups, toxic relationships and the nuances of romance.

The name itself is a design brief. The black side of the group is its edgier girl crush image, and the pink side is its more feminine and vibrant one. Rosé told Jimmy Kimmel that they are "very girly but at the same time we're very savage too". She named "Pretty Savage" as the song that fits them best. At the press conference for "Pink Venom" in August 2022, Jennie said the group is "always confident and full of confidence".

When "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" came out in 2018, Billboard called them "K-pop's most visible representatives" of girl crush. Cultural critic Jung Deok-hyeon credited them with building a confident image and a "solid fandom" centered on women. News1 said the group disproved the idea that only boy groups could command a strong fandom.

Early in their career, the members said they wanted to follow labelmate 2NE1 and "show their own unique color". On Carpool Karaoke in 2023, they named TLC and the Spice Girls as childhood favorites. Jennie admired TLC's vocals, rap and hip-hop style, and the Spice Girls' distinct individual characters. During work on "Sour Candy" in 2020, they called Lady Gaga a major influence, and Jennie remembered being struck by the creativity and fashion of her "Telephone" video from 2010. They also cited Ariana Grande, Cardi B and Selena Gomez.

Fashion became a second stage. Jisoo is a global ambassador for Dior, Jennie for Chanel, Rosé for Yves Saint Laurent, and Lisa for Bulgari and Celine. After the group's 2026 Met Gala appearance, The Hollywood Reporter called them a "staple in the world of fashion". Their "How You Like That" video and performances drew notice for modern takes on the hanbok, the traditional Korean costume. Jennie told Elle that fashion "definitely empowers us as much as music does".

  • In May 2017, Blackpink became honorary ambassadors for Incheon Main Customs, and banners with their faces greeted foreign travelers at Incheon International Airport. Kia Motors sponsored the In Your Area World Tour, and the toy company Jazwares made dolls dressed in outfits from their videos. A June 2020 partnership with the avatar app Zepeto passed 30 million participants by the 11th of September 2020. In July 2025, they launched a limited-edition apparel collection with Paris Saint-Germain ahead of their Paris concerts. In August 2019, Samsung released a Blackpink Special Edition set in Southeast Asia, and in September 2020 they became Pepsi's spokesperson across Asia-Pacific.

In December 2018, the group gave the ₩20 million prize from the Elle Style Awards to low-income and single-parent households. In April 2019, they donated ₩40 million for victims of the Goseong wildfire, and in March 2022 they gave ₩500 million after wildfires in Gangwon and North Gyeongsang Province. In April 2020, proceeds from their face masks went to the MusiCares relief fund.

On the 25th of February 2021, Blackpink was formally appointed as an official advocate for the COP26 climate conference in Seoul and received a letter of thanks from Prime Minister Boris Johnson. King Charles III later praised their sustainability work in a speech at a state banquet at Buckingham Palace. In November 2023, he invested the four members as honorary Members of the Order of the British Empire at a special ceremony there, attended by President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Time named Blackpink its Entertainer of the Year for 2022. In its June 2022 issue, Rolling Stone made them the third girl group on its cover, after Destiny's Child and the Spice Girls. In his 2021 New Year's address, President Moon Jae-in called them a leader in promoting South Korea abroad. In 2023, they won Group of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards, the second girl group to do so since TLC in 1999. Gallup Korea's 2024 survey tied them with Girls' Generation as the most beloved girl group to debut in the 21st century, with 42% of votes.

Rolling Stone called Blackpink "(without doubt) the biggest K-pop girl group in history". Sisa Journal wrote that just as the Spice Girls symbolized girl groups in the 1990s, "the representative image of today's girl group is none other than Blackpink." Kim Jin-woo of the Circle Chart said industry insiders began launching more girl crush acts, and the chart noted that Korean girl groups added more English lyrics after 2020. Director Maggie Kang said Blackpink inspired the fictional group Huntrix in her 2025 film KPop Demon Hunters.

In February 2026, South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism published a Hallyu trend report on 2025. It found that Blackpink accounted for 14.2% of major K-pop-related keywords in foreign media, the highest share of any act.
