Daft Punk
Daft Punk ended with a short video and no explanation. On the 22nd of February 2021, the French electronic duo posted a clip called Epilogue to their YouTube channel. In it, one robot explodes while the other walks away into the sunset. A title card reads 1993-2021, and an excerpt of their song "Touch" plays underneath. Behind the helmets were Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, two musicians who spent years blending house, funk, disco, techno, rock and synth-pop.
That silent farewell raises the questions this documentary follows. How did two friends in Paris end up with a robot identity? What did their odd name mean, and where did it come from? Why did they walk away from a career that had reached the top of the charts? And what did they leave behind for the musicians who came after them?
Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter met in 1987 at the Lycée Carnot, a secondary school in Paris. They became friends and recorded demos with other students. In 1992 they formed a band called Darlin'. Bangalter played bass, Homem-Christo played guitar, and Laurent Brancowitz played guitar and drums. The trio took their name from a Beach Boys song, "Darlin", and covered it alongside an original composition.
Both tracks appeared on Shimmies in Super 8, a multi-artist EP from Duophonic Records. The label belonged to the London band Stereolab, who invited Darlin' to open for shows in the United Kingdom. Even so, the band lasted around six months, played two gigs and produced four songs. Bangalter later called the project "pretty average". Brancowitz went on to form another band, Phoenix.
Melody Maker had reviewed Darlin' unkindly. Its writer, Dave Jennings, dubbed the music "a daft punky thrash". Bangalter and Homem-Christo found this funny and took it as their new name. Homem-Christo said, "We struggled so long to find the name Darlin', and this name happened so quickly." They bought electronic instruments with money Bangalter had received for his 18th birthday.
In September 1993, the pair went to a rave at EuroDisney organised by the DJ Nicky Holloway. There they met Stuart Macmillan of Slam, a co-founder of the Scottish label Soma Quality Recordings, and handed him a demo tape. That tape became the basis of their first single, "The New Wave", a limited release in 1994. Its final mix, titled "Alive", later appeared on their first album.
In May 1995 they returned to the studio to record "Da Funk", their first commercially successful single. They then hired a manager, Pedro Winter, who promoted them and other artists at his Hype nightclubs. In September 1996 they signed with Virgin Records. The deal licensed their tracks through their production company, Daft Trax.
Bangalter said many labels made offers, but the pair waited so they would not lose creative control. He saw the Virgin arrangement as closer to a partnership. Their first performance in the United States came in 1996, at an Even Furthur event in Wisconsin. In clubs they also played vinyl records from their own collection, mixing many styles, and they did not yet wear the costumes they later became known for.
Muzik, the UK dance magazine, put Daft Punk on its cover in February 1997 and called Homework "one of the most hyped debut albums in a long long time". The album had arrived on the 20th of January 1997 from Virgin Records, to positive reviews. The Village Voice said it revived house music and broke from the Eurodance formula. The critic Alex Rayner wrote that it fused established club styles with the "burgeoning eclecticism" of big beat. The record helped make the pair part of the French house movement.
On the Daftendirektour of 1997, the duo took their home equipment on the road as their live stage. On the 25th of May they headlined the Tribal Gathering festival at Luton Hoo, England, alongside Orbital and Kraftwerk.
"Around the World" was the most successful single from Homework, and "Da Funk" also appeared on the soundtrack of the film Saint. A series of videos for the album came from the directors Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, Roman Coppola and Seb Janiak. They were gathered in 1999 as D.A.F.T.: A Story About Dogs, Androids, Firemen and Tomatoes.
Roulé and Crydamoure were the labels Bangalter and Homem-Christo launched once Homework was out. They used them for side projects and for records by friends. Homem-Christo joined Eric Chedeville in Le Knight Club. Bangalter released music as a member of Together, with DJ Falcon, and founded Stardust with Alan Braxe and Benjamin Diamond. In 1998, Stardust released "Music Sounds Better With You", a hit that was the group's only song.
Discovery, released in 2001, was the duo's attempt to recapture the playful, open-minded attitude of childhood discovery. It reached number 2 in the UK. Its lead single, "One More Time", was a hit. "Digital Love" and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" did well in the UK and on the US Dance Chart. "Face to Face" hit number one on the US club play charts.
The sound drew on 1970s disco and 1980s crooners, with Romanthony and Todd Edwards as collaborators. A major spark was "Windowlicker", a 1999 single by Aphex Twin. Bangalter described that track as "neither a purely club track nor a very chilled-out, down-tempo relaxation track".
The album created a new generation of fans. Pitchfork and Resident Advisor were among the publications that later named it one of the best albums of the decade. Rolling Stone placed it at number 236 on its 2020 list of the 500 greatest albums. In 2021, Pitchfork called it the centrepiece of the duo's career, "an album that transcended the robots' club roots and rippled through the decades that followed".
The Japanese manga artist Leiji Matsumoto partnered with the duo on Interstella 5555, a feature-length animation set to the album. The first four episodes aired in 2001. The finished film reached DVD in 2003, and that December Daft Punk issued Daft Club, a compilation of Discovery remixes. Also in 2001 they released Alive 1997, a 45-minute excerpt from a Daftendirektour performance.
Alexis Petridis of the Guardian described Daft Punk's heavy use of samples as "magpie-like". Homem-Christo called the method bricolage, the art of using found sounds to make something new. In 2008, Bangalter said sampling was something the pair had always done legitimately and never hidden. He called it an almost ideological way of making music. In his telling, it was a way to reinterpret things, either by using an element from the past or by recreating it and fooling the ear.
Pitchfork reported that some fans were disappointed to learn about the samples. In 2007, Rapster released Discovered: A Collection of Daft Funk Samples, a compilation of tracks the duo had sampled. Pitchfork concluded that the collection showed the pair to be "transformative reinterpreters" rather than thieves.
On "Digital Love", the duo used a Wurlitzer piano to evoke the sound of Supertramp. They saw their style as retrofuturist. The New York Times described it as "an increasingly grand vision of joyful populism". The DJ Erol Alkan said "the references are strong and familiar, and there is enough of themselves in there for it to always remain theirs".
In the early 1990s, rock and acid house in the UK inspired the pair. Homem-Christo said Screamadelica by Primal Scream was the record that "put everything together". In 2009, Bangalter named Andy Warhol as an early influence. On the Homework track "Teachers", the duo list musicians who shaped them, including George Clinton, Dr Dre and the Chicago house and Detroit techno artists Paul Johnson, Romanthony and Todd Edwards.
For the Tron: Legacy soundtrack, they looked to Wendy Carlos, who scored the original Tron film. They also named Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, John Carpenter, Vangelis, Philip Glass and Maurice Jarre. For Random Access Memories, they sought a "west coast vibe", pointing to Fleetwood Mac, the Doobie Brothers, the Eagles and the French electronic musician Jean-Michel Jarre.
Many of their songs carry vocals processed with Auto-Tune, a Roland SVC-350 and the Digitech Vocalist. Bangalter compared the complaints about Auto-Tune to the late 1970s, when French musicians tried to ban the synthesiser. He said: "People are often afraid of things that sound new."
Bangalter called the 1974 film Phantom of the Paradise, whose main character wears a mask, "the foundation for a lot of what we're about artistically". The duo also loved Space, a 1970s band that performed in space suits with helmets hiding their faces. Bangalter said masks let them keep the focus on the music, control their image, stay anonymous and protect their personal lives.
In the 1990s, they wore masks for promotional appearances. A camera crew filmed them for a French arts program, yet Daft Punk did not speak on screen. Orla Lee-Fisher, head of marketing at Virgin Records UK, said they agreed to unmasked photographs only while DJing. In 1997, Bangalter said the pair had a rule against appearing in videos. Before the robots, their disguises were Halloween masks or bags.
The robots debuted in 2001 in a special presentation during Cartoon Network's Toonami block, to promote Discovery. Paul Hahn of Daft Arts and the French directors Alex and Martin produced the helmets, with engineering by Tony Gardner and Alterian, Inc. The helmets could produce LED effects. Wigs were first attached to both, but the duo removed them moments before the unveiling. Bangalter said the helmets were hot, though he got used to it, and later models gained ventilators. Commentators compared the costumes to the makeup of Kiss and the leather jacket of Iggy Pop.
For Human After All, they switched to simplified helmets and black leather jackets and trousers designed by Hedi Slimane. Bangalter said they did not want to repeat themselves and were interested in "developing a persona that merges fiction and reality". On the set of Electroma, they gave interviews with their backs turned. In 2006 they wore cloth bags over their heads for a televised interview, a spontaneous decision. At the 2014 Grammys, they accepted their awards on stage in full costume, while Pharrell and Paul Williams spoke on their behalf.
Bangalter said the personas began as shyness, then became exciting for the audience, "the idea of being an average guy with some kind of superpower". He called it an advanced form of glam where "it's definitely not you". After the split, he likened the robots to "a Marina Abramović performance art installation that lasted for 20 years". He rejected the idea that they stood for "an unquestioning embrace of digital culture". He said: "We tried to use these machines to express something extremely moving that a machine cannot feel, but a human can. We were always on the side of humanity and not on the side of technology."
A Gap advertisement with Juliette Lewis, set to "Digital Love", left the duo contractually obliged to appear only in Gap clothing. They also fronted a Sony Ericsson phone, the Premini, wearing their Discovery-era headgear. In 2010 they appeared in Adidas advertisements for a Star Wars clothing line, and in 2011 Coca-Cola distributed limited edition bottles they designed. In May 2013 they made a rare public appearance at the Monaco Grand Prix for the Lotus F1 Team, whose cars carried the Daft Punk logo. In 2015 they joined several other musicians to announce their co-ownership of the music service Tidal at its relaunch.
Human After All came out in March 2005 after only six weeks of writing and recording. Reviews were mixed, with critics faulting its repetitiveness and darker mood. "Robot Rock" and "Technologic" nonetheless did well in the UK. "Human After All" and "The Prime Time of Your Life" also came out as singles. The anthology Musique Vol. 1 1993-2005 followed on the 4th of April 2006, and the duo also issued a remix album, Human After All: Remixes.
On the 21st of May 2006, the Cannes Film Festival sidebar Director's Fortnight premiered Daft Punk's Electroma, an avant-garde science-fiction film the duo directed. The film contains none of their music. Midnight screenings began in Paris theatres in March 2007.
Across 48 dates in 2006 and 2007, the Alive 2006/2007 tour put the duo inside a large LED-fronted pyramid, performing a "megamix" of their music. The tour was acclaimed and is credited with bringing dance music to a wider audience, especially in North America. The Guardian journalist Gabriel Szatan compared it to the Beatles' 1964 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, which brought British rock and roll to mainstream America. The Paris show became the live album Alive 2007, released on the 19th of November 2007. A live "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" came out as a single, with a video by Olivier Gondry built from audience footage of the Brooklyn show. In 2009, both the album and the single won Grammy Awards.
Kanye West sampled "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" in his 2007 single "Stronger". On the 10th of February 2008, Daft Punk made a surprise appearance at the 50th Grammy Awards. They performed a reworked "Stronger" with West at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It was their first televised live performance.
Pedro Winter stepped down as manager in 2008 to focus on Ed Banger Records and his work as Busy P. The duo went back to Paris for new material and set up their Daft Arts production office at the Jim Henson Studios complex in Hollywood. In 2009 they provided new mixes for the video game DJ Hero and appeared in it as playable characters.
At the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that the duo had composed 24 tracks for the film Tron: Legacy. Joseph Trapanese arranged and orchestrated the score, working with them for two years. It features an 85-piece orchestra recorded at AIR Lyndhurst Studios in London. The director Joseph Kosinski described it as a mixture of orchestral and electronic elements. Daft Punk also appeared in the film as DJs, wearing their helmets. The soundtrack album followed on the 6th of December 2010, the same day a video for "Derezzed" premiered with Olivia Wilde as Quorra.
In 2010, France admitted both men to the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, each with the rank of Chevalier, or knight. That October, they surprised the crowd at Madison Square Garden in New York during the encore of Phoenix's show. Phoenix was the band Laurent Brancowitz had formed after Darlin'. The duo played a medley of "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" and "Around the World" that segued into Phoenix's song "1901".
Julian Casablancas, Todd Edwards, DJ Falcon, Panda Bear, Chilly Gonzales, Paul Williams, Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers and Giorgio Moroder all played a part in Random Access Memories. Rodgers was the frontman of Chic. For the project, the duo left Virgin for Columbia Records, part of Sony Music Entertainment. The album was released on the 17th of May 2013.
"Get Lucky" became Daft Punk's first UK number-one single and the most-streamed new song in the history of Spotify. It reached the top 10 in the charts of 27 countries. At the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, the duo debuted a trailer for "Lose Yourself to Dance" and presented the Best Female Video award with Rodgers and Pharrell. Daft Punk had been due on The Colbert Report in August 2013, but that appearance was cancelled over contractual obligations tied to the MTV awards. Stephen Colbert said the duo were unaware of the agreement and were halted by MTV executives the morning before the taping. In December, they revealed a video for "Instant Crush", directed by Warren Fu and featuring Casablancas.
At the 56th Annual Grammy Awards, Random Access Memories won Best Dance/Electronica Album, Album of the Year and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. "Get Lucky" won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Record of the Year. On stage, the duo performed with Stevie Wonder, Rodgers, Pharrell and the album's rhythm players Nathan East, Omar Hakim, Paul Jackson, Jr. and Chris Caswell. Afterward they hosted a large afterparty at the Park Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, with many celebrities and no photography allowed.
Kanye West's sixth album, Yeezus (2013), carried four tracks co-produced with Daft Punk: "On Sight", "Black Skinhead", "I Am a God" and "Send It Up". They also provided additional vocals for Pharrell's 2014 single "Gust of Wind". On the 10th of March 2014, an unreleased song called "Computerized", featuring Jay-Z, leaked online. It contains "The Son of Flynn" from the Tron: Legacy soundtrack and was never used in the film. In April 2015, Daft Punk appeared in a short tribute to Rodgers within the documentary Nile Rodgers: From Disco to Daft Punk. A documentary about the duo, Daft Punk Unchained, followed in June.
In 2016, Daft Punk appeared on two singles by the Canadian R&B singer the Weeknd. "Starboy" topped the Billboard Hot 100, their only US number one, and "I Feel It Coming" reached number four. In February 2017, they opened a pop-up shop in Hollywood, California, displaying memorabilia, artwork and their costumes. On the 12th of February they performed with the Weeknd at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards.
On the 21st of June 2017, the Australian band Parcels released "Overnight", produced and co-written by Daft Punk. It came together after the duo watched Parcels perform and invited the members to their studio. It was Daft Punk's final production together. In early 2024, W. F. Quinn Smith, who played percussion on Random Access Memories, said he took part in experimental sessions for a new Daft Punk album in early 2018. He added that the project was in limbo.
Kathryn Frazier, Daft Punk's longtime publicist, confirmed the split without giving a reason. Digital album purchases rose by 2,650% as the news spread. Their friend and collaborator Todd Edwards said both men remained active separately and were "going in different directions". He said Homem-Christo was more drawn to hip-hop and Bangalter to film. As of 2023, the two still share a studio and equipment.
In April 2023, Bangalter released Mythologies, a solo orchestral ballet score. The press release included a drawing of his unmasked face, and in interviews he allowed himself to be photographed without a mask. He pointed to concerns about artificial intelligence and other technology as a reason the duo split. "As much as I love this character, the last thing I would want to be, in the world we live in, in 2023, is a robot," he said. He added that they had wanted not to "spoil the narrative" while they were active. Looking back, he said he was "relieved and happy to look back and say: 'Okay, we didn't mess it up too much.'"
In February 2022, Daft Punk announced a 25th-anniversary edition of Homework, with a remix album, Homework (Remixes). A Twitch stream of their 1997 Daftendirektour show at the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles included previously unreleased footage of the duo without costumes. On the 12th of May 2023, a 10th-anniversary edition of Random Access Memories added 35 minutes of outtakes and demos. One of them, "Infinity Repeating (2013 Demo)", featuring Casablancas and the Voidz, was called Daft Punk's "last song ever" in press releases.
In 2024, a 4K AI upscale of Interstella 5555 premiered at the Tribeca Festival in June and played in theatres worldwide for one weekend in December. A reissue of Discovery came with a gold vinyl version limited to 5,555 copies. In September 2025, the online game Fortnite unveiled a virtual "Daft Punk Experience" with interactive activities and Daft Punk outfits. The Epic Games executive Alex Rigopulos called the project a "love letter" to the duo. On the 7th of November, a video for "Contact" followed, created by Epic Games and Magnopus from the opening sequence of that game mode.
In 2021, the Guardian critic Alexis Petridis named Daft Punk the most influential pop artists of the 21st century. Pitchfork wrote that it was "impossible to imagine contemporary electronic dance music without Daft Punk". Pharrell Williams said they were responsible for the rise of contemporary EDM. The French musician Madeon learned production by reverse-engineering Daft Punk sounds. He praised their use of a cheap $50 DigiTech pedal, with which they made an entire album on Human After All.
Charli XCX named the duo as an influence while accepting her British Dance Act award at the Brit Awards 2025. Her 2024 song "Guess" interpolates "Technologic". In 2018, scientists named a flatworm species Baicalellia daftpunka because it partly resembles a helmet. A 4K restoration of Electroma is due to premiere at the Tribeca Festival in June 2026, its 20th anniversary. That follows a February 2026 video for "Human After All" made from footage of the film.
