  • Jennie opened her own YouTube channel on the 16th of January 2021, her 25th birthday, and it passed one million subscribers in under seven hours. Within a day it held more than 1.75 million. Only the Brazilian singer Marília Mendonça had gathered subscribers faster in that window. Jennie is a South Korean singer, rapper, songwriter and actress, best known as a member of the girl group Blackpink. That welcome sits oddly beside her own account of her audition for YG Entertainment. She says she was so afraid of strangers that she could barely introduce herself.

How does a girl who froze in front of a few judges become the most-followed Korean on Instagram? What did a childhood partly spent in New Zealand, and a long apprenticeship inside a record label, have to do with it? And what happens when a member of one of the best-selling girl groups of all time steps out alone, founds her own label and starts making albums, acting roles and fashion campaigns under her own name?

  • Jennie Kim was born on the 16th of January 1996, an only child, and early reports placed her birth in Cheongdam-dong, a ward of Seoul's Gangnam District. In the third episode of Apartment 404 she corrected that. She was actually born in Bundang, in Seongnam. She attended Cheongdam Elementary School in Seoul before her life took a turn abroad.

At eight years old, she joined her family on a trip to Australia and New Zealand. Her mother asked whether she liked New Zealand and wanted to stay. Jennie answered "yes". A year later she was enrolled at Waikowhai Intermediate School in Auckland, living with a home-stay family. She later talked about learning a new language in an MBC documentary called English, Must Change to Survive, from 2006.

Ballet was her dream during those adolescent years. After intermediate school she moved on to ACG Parnell College in Auckland.

It was in New Zealand that she first heard K-pop, and she was drawn in particular to the music of YG Entertainment. At 14 she faced a different plan. Her mother intended to move her to Florida in the United States to keep studying, with a view to becoming a lawyer or teacher. Jennie disliked the idea. She worried about living alone and never finding work she loved. Her family supported her choice, and she settled back into Seoul at Cheongdam Middle School in 2010.

  • Rihanna's "Take a Bow" was the song Jennie chose for her YG Entertainment audition, and the label took her on as a trainee. The company urged her to lean into the role of a rapper. Most of the songs she covered included raps, and she was the only trainee fluent in English at the time. Alongside her native Korean, she knows basic Japanese and has learned French.

Every month, trainees performed a group song, a dance and a solo song for the label's CEO, producers and artists, who judged how training was going. Jennie recounted this routine on V Live. She also remembered preparing outfits and songs, making musical accompaniments and practicing choreography.

On the 10th of April 2012, a photo titled "Who's that girl?" appeared on YG Entertainment's official blog. It quickly became the most searched topic on portal sites, where she was called "Mystery Girl". On the 30th of August the label posted a video titled "YG Trainee - Jennie Kim", in which she covered B.o.B.'s "Strange Clouds" featuring Lil Wayne. Her first public appearance came on the 1st of September, as the lead actress in G-Dragon's music video "That XX", from his extended play One of a Kind.

In January 2013 another video, "Jennie Kim - YG New Artist", showed her covering rapper Wale's "Lotus Flower Bomb". Guest spots followed. In March, Lee Hi featured her on "Special", a B-side from the album First Love. In August she appeared on Seungri's B-side "GG Be", from Let's Talk About Love. In September she recorded the hook for G-Dragon's "Black" in less than five days before his album Coup d'Etat came out. On the 8th of September she made her first stage appearance beside G-Dragon on SBS' Inkigayo.

On the 1st of June 2016, Jennie became the first member revealed for the label's newest girl group, its first since 2NE1 seven years earlier. She debuted with Blackpink on the 8th of August 2016, alongside Jisoo, Rosé and Lisa. The release was the single album Square One, with double A-side singles "Boombayah" and "Whistle". According to Jisoo, Jennie handled the group's general duties and decision making. In 2018 Blackpink signed with Interscope Records, in a global partnership with YG Entertainment.

  • A video of Jennie crying after a horror room with Lee Kwang-soo went viral in South Korea in July 2018. She had appeared on Running Man with Jisoo. The clip drew over one million views on one site and over three million across platforms. Jennie was named one of the best variety stars of 2018, was said to rank first among casting choices and fielded offers from several shows. On the 1st of October she was confirmed for SBS' Village Survival, the Eight, her first permanent casting in a television series.

In mid-October 2018 her solo debut was announced as a single album titled Solo, with a lead single of the same name. The song was first shown at Blackpink's In Your Area tour in Seoul on the 10th of November, two days before release. It was described as a hip hop track with pop elements, built to show Jennie as both a "delicate girl" and an "independent woman". To promote it, YG Entertainment aired a YouTube series, Jennie - 'Solo' Diary, sharing glimpses of her work.

"Solo" debuted at number one on the Gaon Music Chart and took a triple crown by topping the domestic digital, download and streaming charts together. It earned a platinum streaming certification from the KMCA. It won Song of the Year for November at the eighth Gaon Chart Music Awards and the Digital Bonsang at the 34th Golden Disc Awards. Overseas, it topped Billboard's World Digital Songs chart.

On YouTube, the music video became the most viewed by a female Korean soloist within 24 hours of release. Jennie was also the first and only female Korean soloist to pass 300 million views within six months. It later became the first video by a Korean female soloist to surpass one billion views. On the 25th of November she collected her first music show win as a soloist on Inkigayo, and she went on to win three times for a triple crown.

On the 12th and the 19th of April 2019, Jennie became the first Korean solo artist to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, singing "Solo" during Blackpink's set. Billboard put the performance on its list of the 10 best things seen at Coachella 2019, calling it "mind-blowing" and "stunning". She co-wrote Blackpink's "Lovesick Girls", released on the 2nd of October 2020 as the third single from their debut studio album, The Album. On the 31st of January 2021, she performed a revamped "Solo" in Blackpink's livestream concert, The Show, with a new rap verse she wrote and an extended tropical dance break. Reworking a song with a fresh verse would become her habit.

  • Blackpink's Born Pink World Tour, which began in October 2022, is where Jennie first performed a new solo song, "You & Me". At Coachella in April 2023, with Blackpink headlining, she performed a remixed version with a new rap verse. On the 2nd of July she sang it beside "Solo" at the group's headlining concert at BST Hyde Park in London.

That same year she made her acting debut under the stage name Jennie Ruby Jane in the HBO series The Idol. The show was created by and starred the Canadian singer the Weeknd. Critics panned it, and it was cancelled after one season. Jennie's role drew praise, though. She played Dyanne, a backup dancer and close friend of the pop star Jocelyn, played by Lily-Rose Depp. A widely circulated clip of her outviewed the show's premiere on HBO.

She first teased a collaboration with the Weeknd by playing a snippet at a launch party for her Calvin Klein capsule collection. The song, "One of the Girls" by the Weeknd, Jennie and Lily-Rose Depp, came out on the 23rd of June 2023 on the extended play The Idol Episode 4. Fans on TikTok then championed her parts of it, which led to an official single release on the 8th of December and a push to US rhythmic contemporary radio. The song became her first Billboard Hot 100 entry and peaked at number 51 in March 2024, the highest placing for a K-pop female soloist at that point. It spent 20 weeks on the chart and passed 1 billion streams on Spotify. It also made her the first Korean female solo artist to earn a platinum certification from the RIAA. In the United Kingdom it reached number 21, her best solo showing there among Blackpink members, and it hit number ten on the Billboard Global 200.

After the tour ended, "You & Me" was announced on the 4th of October 2023 and released as a special single two days later. It debuted at number seven on the Billboard Global 200 and topped the Billboard Global Excl. US chart, her first solo number one there. It peaked at number four on South Korea's Circle Digital Chart. In the United Kingdom it debuted at number 39 and reached number one on both the UK Singles Downloads Chart and the UK Singles Sales Chart, a first for a Korean female soloist.

On the 22nd of November 2023, King Charles III invested Jennie as an Honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire at Buckingham Palace. Her Blackpink bandmates received the honor with her at a special investiture, which South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol also attended.

On the 6th of December, YG Entertainment announced that Blackpink had renewed its contracts for group activities, while individual contracts were still under discussion. On the 24th of December, Jennie revealed that she had founded her own record label, Odd Atelier, in November 2023. On the 29th of December, YG Entertainment confirmed that she and the other members had agreed not to proceed with a contract with the label for individual activities.

In 2024 she released "Slow Motion" with the American rapper Matt Champion of Brockhampton on the 8th of March, and it appeared on his debut studio album, Mika's Laundry. On the 26th of April she featured on South Korean rapper Zico's single "Spot!", which reached number one on the Circle Digital Chart. That gave her a second chart-topper after "Solo". It peaked at number eight on the Billboard Global Excl. US chart and debuted at number one on Billboard's World Digital Song Sales chart. At the 2024 MAMA Awards, Jennie was the most-nominated and most-awarded soloist, winning four trophies including Best Dance Performance Female Solo for "You & Me" and Best Collaboration for "Spot!". On the 8th of September 2024, it was announced that she had signed with Columbia Records as a solo artist, in partnership with Odd Atelier. The first single from her debut album followed on the 11th of October.

  • "Mantra", the lead single from Jennie's debut studio album Ruby, debuted at number three on the Billboard Global 200 and number two on the Billboard Global Excl. US chart. It peaked at number three on South Korea's Circle Digital Chart and became her first solo entry on the US Billboard Hot 100. In Britain it debuted at number 37 on the UK Singles Chart, the highest placing there for a Korean female soloist.

The music video for the album track "Zen" arrived on the 25th of January 2025. "Love Hangover", featuring Dominic Fike, came out on the 31st of January as the second single. The third, "ExtraL" featuring Doechii, followed on the 21st of February and went gold with the RIAA. That made Jennie the first K-pop solo artist with four RIAA certifications.

Ruby was released on the 7th of March 2025, together with its fourth single, "Like Jennie". The album sold one million copies worldwide in its first week and entered the top 10 in 19 countries, including South Korea, Australia and the United States. In the United Kingdom it debuted at number three on the UK Albums Chart. That placing beat Rosé's Rosie as the highest by a female K-pop soloist and matched Jung Kook's Golden (2023) as the highest by any K-pop solo artist. "Like Jennie" became her third number one on the Circle Digital Chart and debuted at number five on the Billboard Global 200.

A music video for the album track "Handlebars", featuring Dua Lipa, was released on the 10th of March. It went to US contemporary hit radio the next day and to Italian radio on the 14th of March, as the fifth single. "Handlebars", "Like Jennie" and "ExtraL" sat on the Billboard Hot 100 together in one week, a first for a K-pop female soloist. She now had six Hot 100 entries in total, the most for a K-pop woman, including all five Ruby singles.

On the 26th of April she released a video for the album track "Seoul City", the seventh video from the album. Releasing videos for nearly half of the 15 tracks was a first among K-pop artists. To promote Ruby she staged a run of concerts called the Ruby Experience, beginning on the 6th of March. It was first announced as three shows in Los Angeles, New York and Seoul, and later added shows in Los Angeles and Paris. Critics praised its experimental, cinematic production. She also performed songs from Ruby at Coachella on the 13th and the 20th of April.

On the 24th of July 2025, she signed a co-management deal with ALTA Music Group alongside Odd Atelier, becoming the first artist in the new company's management division. At the 2025 Billboard Women in Music Awards she became the first Korean soloist to receive an honor from the ceremony. At the 2025 Melon Music Awards on the 20th of December, she won Record of the Year, Millions Top 10 and Top 10 Artist. No soloist had ever taken that grand prize before.

On the 10th of January 2026, she performed at the 40th Golden Disc Awards and became the first artist to win its newly created Artist of the Year grand prize. She also took the Global Impact with Prizm Award and Best Digital Song for "Like Jennie" and Blackpink's "Jump". At the 23rd Korean Music Awards she won Best K-pop Album for Ruby and Best K-pop Song for "Like Jennie".

In 2026 she collaborated with Tame Impala on a remix of their song "Dracula". It set off a viral TikTok trend joined by numerous celebrities and peaked at number two on both the Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. US. It was Tame Impala's first top 10 on both charts and the fifth and sixth for Jennie. On the Billboard Hot 100 it peaked at number 10, the first top-ten hit there for either artist.

  • "I remember when I was little, I look through my mother's wardrobe, and search for whatever vintage Chanel I could find." Jennie told Elle Indonesia this when she described her earliest memory of the fashion house. In January 2018, Chanel Korea chose her as the new muse for its beauty line, and her first pictorial for the brand ran in Harper's Bazaar Korea. She became Chanel Korea's ambassador that June. A spokesperson said her loyalty to the brand and trendy style matched Chanel's image as it courted young millennials.

That June she attended the launch of Les Eaux de Chanel in Deauville, France. There she met and interviewed Olivier Polge, Chanel's in-house perfume creator. In October she was named a global ambassador for Chanel and attended her first Chanel show at Paris Fashion Week. On the 23rd of September 2021, she became the face of the Coco Neige 2021-22 campaign, photographed by the Dutch duo Inez and Vinoodh. In May 2023 she made her Met Gala debut in a vintage Chanel dress from the fall 1990 ready-to-wear collection. Later came the Coco Crush campaign in January 2024 and the Chanel 25 handbag campaign in March 2025 with Dua Lipa.

Her own styling mattered too. For her solo debut she helped plan and style her wardrobe, assembling more than 20 outfits for the "Solo" music video. She told Billboard she considered how each piece would fit the song during filming and made adjustments. She told Elle Korea that fashion had become a key part of her career, a way to convey meaning through music both aurally and visually. For the March 2021 issue of Vogue Korea she served as one of the fashion editors, helping decide the concept, hair and makeup drafts and styling.

On the 18th of May 2021, she became the face of Calvin Klein's Spring 2021 collection, Drop 02, a collaboration with Heron Preston. Further Calvin Klein campaigns followed in September 2021 and February 2022. In May 2023 she partnered with the brand on its first capsule collection. In June 2025, Vogue Korea reported that the capsule generated $8.6 million in Media Impact Value. That placed her third among Calvin Klein ambassadors, behind the actor Jeremy Allen White and BTS's Jung Kook. Her Jacquemus "Guirlande" holiday campaign in December 2023 earned 4.2 million likes and a 5.12% engagement rate on a single post. On the 10th of June 2024 she made her runway debut by closing Jacquemus' 15th-anniversary show in Capri, Italy.

On the 15th of April 2020, the eyewear brand Gentle Monster announced "Jentle Home", a collection inspired by Jennie's childhood memories. She designed items herself, including glasses, sunglasses and eyewear chains. A dollhouse-themed pop-up store opened in Gangnam District, Seoul, in May 2020. A second collaboration, the mobile game Jentle Garden, launched on the 22nd of February 2022 and ranked first in popularity on the Korean App Store, ahead of TikTok. The third collaboration, an eyewear collection also named "Jentle Garden", arrived on the 10th of March 2022 with photographs by the French photographer Hugo Comte. She designed the house at the fantasy-themed pop-up store that followed. On the 12th of October 2022, Porsche announced she had helped design a custom Taycan 4S Cross Turismo named Jennie Ruby Jane.

In July 2025 she appeared in the Adidas Originals "Superstar: The Original" campaign. It included a short film, Clocks: Adidas Superstar, directed by Thibaut Grevet and narrated by Samuel L. Jackson.

  • Jennie's hairpins, worn in a five-by-five partition during "Solo" performances, instantly trended in South Korea and took her name. Her taste in clothes earned her the nicknames "Human Gucci" and "Human Chanel". In 2021 she became the first Korean to reach 50 million followers on Instagram. By December 2023 she had over 82.5 million, second among K-pop idols only to bandmate Lisa. Instagram named her account the "Most Loved Account of 2018" in South Korea. In a Gallup Korea survey that year of 1,501 respondents aged 13 to 29, she placed second with 12.2% of votes.

Brands felt the pull. Hera, a luxury beauty label owned by Amore Pacific, made her its face in 2019. Its first lip campaign with her, the Red Vibe series, sold five times as much as the brand's previous lip product, and shoppers called the shades "Jennie's lipsticks". Chum Churum, a soju brand, reportedly recovered 14-15% of its pandemic sales losses after she signed on. Ace Bed's stock price reportedly rose 28.14% when it named her as its model. Osen reported that she ranked sixth in endorsement earnings in 2021, at an estimated ₩5 billion, despite appearing in only five advertisements. In September 2025 came the Jennie Ruby Red Beats Solo 4 headphones, followed by a Stanley collection and Haribo's Ruby Hearts gummies at Target. In April 2026 she became a global ambassador for Ray-Ban and launched a collection with Frankies Bikinis.

Other artists name her as a role model, among them Aespa's Ningning, Babymonster's Ahyeon and Illit's Moka. She was named to Time's list of the 100 most influential people in 2026 and to the Forbes Korea Power Celebrity 40 for 2025-2026. When she began rapping, she studied Lauryn Hill and TLC, and she calls Rihanna her main influence. While working on The Album she listened to Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish, Harry Hudson, H.E.R. and Kacey Musgraves. Her vocal coach Shin Yoo-mi, who trained her for her solo debut, described her as versatile.

Village Survival, the Eight producer Jung Chul-min called her "really funny" and said that, unlike her stage charisma, she has baby-like charms off it. Jennie told Harper's Bazaar she wants to be "a good individual who thinks for herself", rather than the person others have branded her as.

Her giving began in 2018 with the "Protect Our Family" campaign of the Cheongdam Woori Animal Hospital, which rescues abandoned dogs and protects pets. In May 2024 she donated ₩100 million, about US$74,400, to Habitat for Humanity Korea in the name of Blackpink's fan club, Blink, to help build an alternative school for young people. Proceeds from her US Ruby Experience shows in March 2025 supported fire recovery and firefighters in Los Angeles. That month she also gave ₩100 million to the Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association for wildfire relief in Ulsan and the North and South Gyeongsang provinces. In May 2025 she gave ₩100 million to the Seoul National University College of Medicine Development Fund, citing her interest in nurturing future doctors. In February 2026 she gave ₩100 million to the Briquette Bank, including all proceeds from her January photo exhibition J2NNI5. The gift supplied 12,000 coal briquettes to help vulnerable seniors heat their homes through the winter.
