Planning for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate began in December 2015, shortly after the downloadable content for the previous Nintendo 3DS and Wii U versions was completed. EVO 2019 held the 2nd of August 4 featured Ultimate as a main event with 3,534 entrants signing up for the largest offline tournament ever recorded. Nintendo stated on the 24th of November 2022 that the Smash World Tour 2022 could not continue due to lack of licensing from Nintendo. Accusations against Panda CEO Alan Bunney led qualified players to drop out causing cancellation of both the Panda Cup and subsequent championships.
