Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Planning for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate began in December 2015, shortly after the downloadable content for the previous Nintendo 3DS and Wii U versions was completed. Series creator Masahiro Sakurai returned as director alongside Bandai Namco Studios and Sora Ltd., the same teams behind the prior entries. This continuity allowed staff gathering to happen quickly compared to earlier games that started from scratch. Sakurai had a specific goal: include every character from past titles without disappointing fans. He knew this would create complex licensing hurdles and drastically increase development costs. Former Nintendo president Satoru Iwata had requested a Switch version before his death in 2015, making the project a tribute to him. The team chose to build upon existing systems rather than creating a new game engine because they wanted to fit all desired characters into the final roster. Originally, gameplay differences were planned between docked and handheld modes, but Sakurai scrapped that idea when he found the handheld screen quality sufficient. All returning characters required rebalancing to function correctly within the new system. Sakurai believed this effort to include music, stages, and fighters was unprecedented and cautioned future games might be smaller in scope.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate functions as a platform fighter supporting up to eight players simultaneously. Each player controls a character with a percentage meter that rises as they take damage. Higher percentages make it easier to launch opponents out of the arena. Standard battles use three victory conditions: Timed matches where players earn the most knockouts within a limit, Stock matches where teams have set lives, and Stamina mode replacing percentages with hit points. Players can adjust rules and save presets for future sessions. Items like Poké Balls and Assist Trophies spawn randomly to grant advantages or summon non-playable allies. A powerful Final Smash attack triggers via Smash Ball collection or special meter filling. The base game features 103 different stages plus one free update stage. Most stages contain dynamic elements and hazards toggleable through rules. New Stage Morph mechanics allow two stages to alternate during matches. Additional modes include Squad Strike team battles and Tourney brackets for up to 32 players. Spirits replace collectible trophies from previous entries, allowing players to power up fighters with unique abilities gained through Spirit Battles. The World of Light adventure mode integrates these spirits into a narrative where Galeem destroys the world and Kirby must rescue captured characters.
The final roster includes 89 playable fighters comprising all 63 previous characters plus 11 newcomers. Newcomers included Inklings from Splatoon, Ridley and Dark Samus from Metroid, Simon Belmont from Castlevania, Chrom from Fire Emblem Awakening, King K. Rool, Isabelle, Ken Masters, Incineroar, Min Min, Steve, Sephiroth, Pyra and Mythra, Kazuya Mishima, and Sora. Certain movesets based on other characters are classified as Echo Fighters like Bowser Jr. who has Koopaling skins. Piranha Plant was released in January 2019 as free downloadable content for registered owners. Five additional fighters formed the first Fighters Pass bundle including Joker, Hero, Banjo & Kazooie, Terry Bogard, and Byleth. The second pass contained six more fighters ending with Sora in October 2021. Negotiating third-party licenses proved difficult yet essential. Microsoft head Phil Spencer called adding Banjo and Kazooie an easy deal due to strong partnerships. Disney representatives facilitated negotiations for Sora after Sakurai met them at an award venue. Early discussions about Minecraft content began five years before Steve's addition. The team had to rework every stage to accommodate Steve's gameplay mechanics. Sakurai initially thought legal hurdles regarding Kingdom Hearts would be insurmountable but eventually secured inclusion through Nintendo, Square Enix, and Disney collaboration.
Nintendo announced the game in a the 8th of March 2018 Nintendo Direct presentation without revealing its title. The teaser showed Mario, Link, and Inklings from Splatoon. E3 2018 revealed the full title Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and set the release date for the 7th of December 2018. The event highlighted returning characters plus newcomers like Ridley. Demo versions were playable at E3 and San Diego Comic-Con later that month. IGN nominated it for Best Game of E3 2018 while winning Best Nintendo Switch Game from both IGN and Gamescom. Two additional Nintendo Direct presentations occurred on August 8 and the 1st of November 2018, unveiling new characters and modes. Special editions included Pro Controllers and Joy-Con bundles alongside standard retail copies. A GameCube controller with the Ultimate logo launched on the 2nd of November 2018. One animation featuring Mr. Game & Watch as a Native American sparked controversy leading to an apology and removal shortly after release. A leaked copy distributed online two weeks before launch prompted copyright strikes against YouTube videos using mined data. Fans worked to isolate spoilers regarding the World of Light story mode from those who had played the leaked version.
Review aggregator Metacritic assigned universal acclaim scores to the game while OpenCritic recommended 97% of critics. French website Jeuxvideo.com called it the best in the series praising its mix of content and nostalgia. Bleacher Report highlighted colorful art styles and faster gameplay compared to predecessors. IGN praised bringing back every character as ambitious and excellent. The Verge commended the massive soundtrack and portable music player features. However, the online mode received significant criticism for technical performance issues. Many players experienced lag even when using wired connections over wireless networks. Matchmaking failed to adhere to chosen criteria frequently pairing users with rule sets they did not select. Friends found it difficult to join matches against random opponents without allowing multiple local players to participate simultaneously. Complaints flooded the official subreddit until administrators forwarded them to a separate thread. Loading times were noted as problematic though lessened on the Nintendo Switch 2 which supports backward compatibility. The World of Light single-player mode received mixed reviews with some finding it accessible yet others deeming it tedious and excessive.
November 2018 announcements confirmed Ultimate was the most pre-ordered Switch title in history. UK sales figures showed physical launch numbers 302% higher than Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 62.5% higher than Brawl. Japan sold 1.2 million copies within three days outpacing Pokémon Let's Go titles and Breath of the Wild. United States sales exceeded three million copies in eleven days making it the fastest-selling Switch game there. Global shipments reached 12.08 million by January 2019 becoming Nintendo's fastest-selling game ever at that time. By September 2020 total sales surpassed 21.10 million copies worldwide establishing it as the best-selling fighting game of all time. It overtook Street Fighter II records and became the third-best-selling Switch game behind Animal Crossing New Horizons and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Sales continued climbing through March 2025 reaching over 36 million copies globally. The Association for UK Interactive Entertainment reported it as the fastest-selling Switch and Super Smash Bros. entry in their region. Amazon named it their highest selling video game product of 2018.
EVO 2019 held the 2nd of August 4 featured Ultimate as a main event with 3,534 entrants signing up for the largest offline tournament ever recorded. Concurrent viewership during Top 8 matches exceeded 279,000 people setting new streaming records. Hungrybox partnered with NFL running back Le'Veon Bell and Team Liquid to host The Box online tournament offering a $10,000 prize pool in May 2020. February 2020 announcements revealed the Smash World Tour would include both Melee and Ultimate players competing for a grand prize pool of $250,000. Pandemic restrictions caused qualifiers to be postponed or canceled before the tour relaunched successfully in 2021. An officially licensed circuit called Panda Cup launched in 2022 featuring both titles. Nintendo stated on the 24th of November 2022 that the Smash World Tour 2022 could not continue due to lack of licensing from Nintendo. Accusations against Panda CEO Alan Bunney led qualified players to drop out causing cancellation of both the Panda Cup and subsequent championships. The community remains active despite these organizational challenges.
