Stranger Things season 5

  • On the 31st of December 2025, Netflix released the last episode of Stranger Things season 5, and the service crashed shortly after it aired. The season closed an American science fiction horror drama created by the Duffer Brothers. It reached viewers in three parts rather than all at once. Behind that finale sat a long production, a rewritten ending, an enormous budget and a cast of returning favorites joined by a few surprising newcomers. This documentary asks why the Duffers changed their ending after the fourth season arrived, what the Upside Down turned out to be, and why a famous film director came out of retirement for two episodes. It also asks how critics and fans received the final goodbye.

  • November 1987 is the month in which the final season unfolds, a year and eight months after the events of the fourth season. Rifts have opened throughout the town of Hawkins, and the surviving group sets out to find and kill Vecna. Their task grows harder when the military seals the town under a quarantine. According to Matt Duffer, the quarantine is a way to cover up the portal disaster. The military assigns a team called the Wolf Pack, led by Dr. Kay, played by Linda Hamilton, to capture Eleven.

The anniversary of Will Byers' disappearance is approaching, and the group must unite for a last battle against the forces of the Upside Down. Eleven now has better control of her powers and uses them in more innovative ways. Matt Duffer said the closest comparison is probably the Force from Star Wars.

Mike Wheeler also changes. Matt Duffer told Variety that Mike becomes the leader again, in a more confident and mature version than the boy of the first season.

Ross Duffer described a different kind of strain for Dustin Henderson, who is grieving and struggling over what happened to Eddie Munson. That grief puts challenges on his friendship with Steve Harrington. It is also destabilizing, because Dustin will no longer be the one who keeps the group together and aligned.

  • On the 17th of February 2022, Matt and Ross Duffer released an expansive letter that confirmed a fifth and final season. The same letter described the two-part release of the fourth season and a planned spinoff set in the show's world. The brothers had once said the show would run for four seasons at most, though producers teased a five-season run back in 2017.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed their routine. Because of the disruption, the Duffers outlined the whole fifth season before the fourth had even begun shooting. After the fourth season came out, they listened to feedback from fans and collaborators and reworked parts of the plan. The biggest change was the series ending, which they pitched again to Netflix. They noted that most of the original plan stayed unchanged.

Writing began on the 2nd of August 2022, about a month after the second volume of season four. On the 6th of November 2022, Stranger Things Day, the team announced that the first episode would be titled "Chapter One: The Crawl" and written by the Duffers. Some unused ideas from the second season found a home in this one. The writers described the tone as if "season 1 and 4 had a baby" which was "injected with steroids".

The 2023 Writers Guild of America strike interrupted the work on the 6th of May 2023. On the 27th of September, the day the strike ended, the writers' room account on Twitter posted an image reading "We're back". Netflix reportedly prioritized this script because the show was profitable and its young actors could not play teenagers forever. By the 14th of October 2023, writing was over halfway done.

Ross Duffer said they never meant for Eleven to end up staying with Mike and her friends. In his view, she had to "go away" so the group could "move on" and the story of Hawkins and the Upside Down could close.

The cast heard the plan in stages. The table read for episode 4 took place on the 6th of December 2023. The final table read followed on the 8th of September 2024, on Stage 16 of the Atlanta production facilities. The actors had not read the script up to the finale, because the Duffers generally do not share their work with the cast. Finn Wolfhard said the cast worried that the finale might be received as badly as the end of Game of Thrones, but the script showed them it was "something special".

  • Freddy Krueger gave the Duffers a shorthand for what Vecna had become. They called him "Freddy Krueger on steroids", stronger and scarier than ever, with powers that now work in the real world and not only in the Upside Down. To stage his menace, the brothers drew on the "bad guys" of The Terminator from 1984 and Terminator 2: Judgment Day from 1991. They also took inspiration from the entrance of Darth Vader in the 2016 Star Wars film Rogue One, which shows his powers in full display.

Will Byers stands at the center of the season, so that the story can "go full circle". The Duffers said it will explain what the Upside Down really is and why Vecna took Will in the first season. They had been considering Will's powers for some time. His abilities are unlike those of Vecna or Eleven. He can control only what lives inside the hive mind of Vecna and the Upside Down. Ross Duffer said Will's power source comes from Vecna, and that Will is "puppeteering" it.

Noah Schnapp, who plays Will, compared the bond between Will and Vecna to the one between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort. He said more of those parallels would show up as the season went on.

A second mystery concerns the Mind Flayer. The 2023 prequel play Stranger Things: The First Shadow hints that the Mind Flayer pushed Henry to accept his dark side and his link to the Upside Down. Matt Duffer therefore suggested the finale would reveal who "the real evil is", Vecna or the Mind Flayer. The finale was meant to wrap up the fates of Vecna and of the Upside Down creatures: the Demogorgons, the Mind Flayer and the Demobats.

  • At Netflix's Tudum event in June 2023, the announcement that Linda Hamilton had joined the cast surprised fans. She had reached the Duffers over Zoom, and they told her the "shape" of her character but not the story. In July 2024, Nell Fisher, Jake Connelly and Alex Breaux were revealed as new cast members in undisclosed roles. Fisher turned out to play Holly Wheeler, a part previously shared by the twin actresses Anniston and Tinsley Price across the first four seasons.

Some returns were confirmed early and others were ruled out. When production began in January 2024, a set photo confirmed that Amybeth McNulty was back as Vickie. That same month, Eduardo Franco, who had a starring role as Argyle in the previous season, said he was not involved and that Argyle would not return. In mid-October 2024, a casting call went out through Knight Edge Media for Sara, the late daughter of Jim Hopper. Elle Graham had played her in the first season, and the new actress was required to resemble Graham back then.

One small role carried a personal story. Mrs. Harris was written for Hope Hynes Love, who had been the high school drama teacher of the Duffers.

Linnea Berthelsen returned as Kali Prasad, also known as Eight, whose last appearance was in the second season. The Duffers had talked about including her in every season but did not want to put her in just to put her in. They said she would have a "big impact on Eleven's journey". Millie Bobby Brown added that Eleven has little family and few people who understand her the way Kali does.

The directing chair also changed hands. Dan Trachtenberg was hired in June 2023 to direct an episode, and Shawn Levy was confirmed as director of at least one by September 2023. After Predator: Badlands was greenlit, Trachtenberg could no longer direct. Frank Darabont took his episode, and came out of retirement to direct two, because he and his wife were huge fans of the series.

  • David Harbour expected to shoot Jim Hopper scenes at the same time as his Marvel Cinematic Universe role in Thunderbolts*, since both were planned for Atlanta. The 2023 Hollywood labor disputes delayed both productions. The delay also solved a scheduling problem with Winona Ryder. When she joined the show in mid-2015, the Duffers had agreed to let her leave for a possible Beetlejuice sequel that Tim Burton had been seriously planning since 2000. Ryder filmed Beetlejuice Beetlejuice in 2024 during the disputes, so the favor never had to be granted.

Production of the fifth season began on the 8th of January 2024. By March, Brown said nine months of filming remained, and she had read scripts for six episodes. On the 27th of June, Maya Hawke told the Podcrushed podcast that the season would be "basically eight movies", with very long episodes. Ross Duffer said production was halfway done on the 3rd of July. By October, Wolfhard told People the cast was almost done.

Filming wrapped on the 20th of December 2024. The last shot recorded on set was a lunchbox that "didn't include any of the cast". Despite scheduling pressures, the Duffers structured the shoot so that every actor's final day was truly their final scene. Joe Keery said everyone felt some "fatigue" after a year of filming, though he called the material "incredible". In total, filming lasted 237 days, and the main unit captured 630 hours of footage. The crew also tried new methods, including first-person shots of the Demogorgon, called "demo-vision".

In January 2025, the Duffers said post-production was underway and visual effects were ahead of schedule. By October, editing was complete. Reports that month put the cost at $50-60 million per episode, which brought the season to a budget of $400-480 million.

  • In January 2025, a missing person poster for Eleven, listed under her name Jane Hopper, kicked off the campaign. New footage and the release dates arrived on the 31st of May during the Tudum celebration. The first promotional poster came on the 15th of July. A teaser followed on the 16th of July, set to "Child in Time" by Deep Purple. Aya Tsintziras of Game Rant praised its emotional charge. Viewers talked most about Vecna's redesign, which looked "thinner" and "spinier".

The official trailer arrived on the 30th of October, set to "Who Wants to Live Forever" by Queen. Netflix accidentally posted it hours early. On the 6th of November, a virtual watch party revealed the five-minute opening sequence of "Chapter One: The Crawl". Shawn Levy briefly paused work on Star Wars: Starfighter to promote the season, because the show's 10th anniversary was a special occasion for him.

The premiere took place on the 6th of November 2025 at the TCL Chinese Theater, which was also Stranger Things Day. Netflix raised its bandwidth by 30% to prevent slow performance, yet the site crashed shortly after the premiere. The season then arrived in three segments. Four episodes came on the 26th of November. Three more followed four weeks later on Christmas Day. After a pause of six days, the finale came on New Year's Eve.

One small mistake slipped through on release. After the first volume came out, Netflix's season page left the second episode titled "Chapter Two: The Vanishing of...", while the opening credits gave the full name, "Chapter Two: The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler".

The finale also played in cinemas across the United States and Canada, with showtimes starting that evening and continuing through the 1st of January 2026. Earlier reports had said it would not be released in theaters. Ross Duffer said the plan had been in the works for a year. It screened at 620 theaters, with pre-sales of 1.1 million tickets. These were sold as concession vouchers rather than traditional admissions, because of issues with the cast's residuals contracts. The run generated over $25 million in concession income.

The afterlife of the season stretched into 2026. The original soundtrack album came out on the 1st of January through Lakeshore and Invada Records. A non-original companion arrived through Legacy Recordings in three parts, matching the three segments. An orchestral EP of five themes, arranged by Dan Romer and Rob Simonsen, followed on the 6th of February. A behind-the-scenes documentary, One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, reached Netflix on the 12th of January. On the 27th of January, the video game Dead by Daylight added "Stranger Things Chapter 2", with Eleven, Dustin Henderson, Robin Buckley and Eddie Munson as Survivors and Vecna as a Killer.

  • On Rotten Tomatoes, the fifth season holds an approval rating of 82% across 161 reviews. Its critics consensus reads, "Stranger Things plays its cards just right in Season 5, solidifying its pop culture classic status with genuinely captivating genre fare." Metacritic gave it 71 out of 100 from 32 critics, which indicates "generally favorable" reviews.

The first volume drew praise for its entertainment, humor and emotional payoff, with criticism of its plot, length and lack of maturity. Jake Seale of The Guardian gave it four stars out of five. Leila Latif of Empire gave it 4/5 for its emotional depth and scale. Ben Travers of IndieWire was cooler, with a C+.

Opinion split more sharply on the second volume and the finale. Michael Walsh of Nerdist gave 4/5, noting ambition and emotional payoff alongside pacing issues. Ed Potton of The Times gave four stars and called it the "crown jewel" of the show, while finding the plot "increasingly preposterous." Stuart Heritage of The Guardian gave three stars out of five. Kelly Lawler of USA Today awarded two and a half stars and said the season "seesawed between thrilling and annoying, from emotionally satisfying to logically baffling." Tara Bennett of IGN called the finale an emotional and highly satisfying conclusion. Travers ended his finale review by saying the ending "encourages everyone to accept saying goodbye to the things they once loved."

Controversy gathered around "Chapter Seven: The Bridge". Media outlets reported that it was review bombed on several sites, after a lengthy scene in which Will Byers comes out as gay. Some fans also objected to the writing, plot or performances.

After the finale, some fans theorized that a secret ninth episode would arrive on the 7th of January 2026, pointing to hints in the finale. No such episode appeared, but the influx of curious viewers reportedly crashed Netflix once more. Netflix did not address the theory directly, though it stated on the show's social media accounts that no further episodes would be released.

Awards lists for the season include the Saturn Awards, where Linda Hamilton appears as a guest star and Noah Schnapp and Sadie Sink as young performers. The Visual Effects Society list centers on "Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up", including the Mind Flayer character and the assault on its mind.
