  • Sadie Sink was 14 years old when casting directors for Stranger Things decided she was too old for the part she wanted. She refused to let it end there. She begged and pleaded for more material to perform, and that stubbornness set the tone for much of what followed. Sink is an American actress, born on the 16th of April 2002, whose work now spans Broadway, horror films, a Taylor Swift short film and a Darren Aronofsky drama. How did a child actor from Texas become a Tony Award nominee? What did the stage teach her before the cameras did? And what did she mean when she talked about stepping out of the child actor role?

  • Brenham, Texas, is where Sadie Elizabeth Sink was born, to a math teacher named Lori and a football coach named Casey Sink. Her ancestry is English, German and Irish. She grew up with three older brothers, Mitchell, Caleb and Spencer, and a younger sister, Jacey. Jacey would later play younger versions of Sadie's characters in the third season of Stranger Things and in the film The Whale.

Sports shaped the household, yet Sadie and her brother Mitchell were drawn to musical theater. The two often recreated scenes from High School Musical, released in 2006. They also watched Broadway plays and Tony Award performances together.

At age seven, Sink's mother enrolled her in acting classes in Houston. That same year she acted in a community production of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever in Brenham. At eight she won a leading role in a local staging of The Secret Garden, which demanded "more learning lines and real practice". The experience convinced her to pursue acting as a profession. In 2012 her family backed that ambition by moving to New Jersey, and she was cast in a Broadway revival the same year.

  • By the age of nine, Sink was performing regularly in plays at Theater Under the Stars in Houston, including White Christmas in 2011. At 10 she was cast in the 2012 Broadway revival of Annie. She stayed with the show for 18 months, performing eight times a week. From October 2012 to July 2013 she was a standby, ready to cover Annie, Tessie, Duffy, July and Pepper.

Lilla Crawford left the production at the end of July 2013. Sink and Taylor Richardson then began alternating in the roles of Annie and Duffy. Director James Lapine explained the choice: "As we were preparing to cast the next Annie, I realized we had two wonderful candidates already in the orphanage. Both Taylor and Sadie are such unique young actresses, that I decided to let them share the role". Sink stayed until the final performance in January 2014. She said the show gave her discipline, and that she loved "every second" of it.

In 2013, during that Broadway run, Sink made her television debut in a guest role on the spy drama The Americans. The part pushed her to think about a film career. A 2014 episode of the police procedural Blue Bloods followed. In 2015 she starred as Suzanne Ballard in the NBC action thriller American Odyssey, which was canceled after one season.

Also in 2015, Sink appeared on Broadway in The Audience as the young Queen Elizabeth II, with Helen Mirren playing the adult queen. Her relationship with acting "really shifted" after she watched how Mirren worked. Working with "some of the greatest minds in the industry" showed her what acting truly meant. USA Today and The New York Times called her performance "touching" and "very good". Her film debut came in 2016 with the biographical sports drama Chuck. That September she auditioned for the Netflix series that would shape her next decade.

  • Four callbacks stood between Sink and the part of Maxine "Max" Mayfield in the second season of Netflix's Stranger Things. One was a chemistry read alongside Gaten Matarazzo and Caleb McLaughlin. During the process she lied about having rollerblading experience. Writer and director Matt Duffer later called the casting "a bit of a no-brainer" because of the "innocent, child chemistry" she shared with the two actors.

Once she booked the role, Sink had to learn to skateboard. She disliked it after falling on her first day of practice. She took three-hour lessons every day for two months. Critics called her "spirited", and IGN said she acts "beyond her years and makes a welcomed addition to the cast". She and her castmates were nominated for the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

The BBC judged her work in the third season "wonderfully loose and natural". Variety praised the energy that Sink and co-star Millie Bobby Brown brought to the screen.

The fourth season arrived in two parts, on the 27th of May and the 1st of July 2022. To prepare, Sink kept a journal and spent time in internal reflection. Rolling Stone called her performance "poignant and emotionally raw". It said she brings "a degree of emotional heft" that balances the season's comedic moments. She won the Hollywood Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Streaming Series, Drama. She was also nominated for a Saturn Award in the category Performance by a Younger Actor. Sink held a main role from the second season through the fifth, and the series ran from 2017 to 2025.

  • The Glass Castle in 2017 and Eli in 2019 kept Sink in film between seasons of Stranger Things. Horror brought a bigger leap in 2021, when she starred in Fear Street Part Two: 1978, the second film of the Fear Street trilogy. She played Ziggy Berman, an aggressive, tomboyish teenager with a difficult home life. Sink said she was drawn to the character's potential for depth.

Director Leigh Janiak suggested she prepare by watching slasher films such as Friday the 13th, from 1980, and Scream, from 1996. Sink did most of her own stunts. The Los Angeles Times praised how she conveyed Ziggy's emotions, attractions and loyalties. RogerEbert.com said her "intense performance gets a great deal of volume" from a one-dimensional character. In the third film, Fear Street Part Three: 1666, she played both Ziggy and Constance.

Taylor Swift cast Sink opposite Dylan O'Brien in All Too Well: The Short Film, released in 2021. Swift wrote and directed it. She had been impressed by Sink's onscreen presence and emotivity in Stranger Things. Swift said that if Sink had declined, she would not have gone ahead with the film. Sink saw the part as a chance to "step out of being a kid on screen" and play someone "more rounded and mature". Collider said the pair gave "vividly emotional performances" in "an incredibly moving tale of love, power, gaslighting, and heartache". Sink's next major film would pair her with Brendan Fraser.

  • A Zoom meeting with director Darren Aronofsky and lead actor Brendan Fraser came before Sink was cast in The Whale in February 2021. She played Ellie, the estranged daughter of Fraser's character. Sink described her own doubts about the girl: "I'd just have these moments of, 'Is she actually evil?'" Some days she decided Ellie was good and simply "in so much pain". Filming could be "so draining", she said, because the darker subject matter required her to "fully shed every layer and be really vulnerable".

The role also changed how she saw herself. Sink said it built her confidence, which she tied to "stepping out of the child actor role and into... your adulthood, where you stop seeing yourself as this little puppet that stands on their mark and takes direction".

The Whale premiered on the 4th of September 2022 at the 79th Venice International Film Festival. Owen Gleiberman of Variety wrote that she "acts with a fire and directness that recalls the young Lindsay Lohan". Justin Chang of the Los Angeles Times found her emotional intensity "impressive" but thought the role was poorly written. Sandra Hall of The Sydney Morning Herald was harsher, writing that her acting "is dialled up to unrelenting obnoxiousness". At the 28th Critics' Choice Awards, Sink was nominated for Best Young Actor/Actress.

In 2022 Sink also led the drama film Dear Zoe, and she appeared on both the Forbes 30 Under 30 and Time 100 Next lists. Her Stranger Things co-star Winona Ryder wrote the Time profile. Ryder described Sink as "this creative acrobat" on "this balance beam that very few have the courage to walk". She added that Sink knows actors are "ultimately in service to the characters and story".

  • A Sacrifice, released in 2024, adapted Nicholas Hogg's 2015 novel Tokyo, with Sink co-starring opposite Eric Bana. IndieWire praised both leads, saying they made for a pleasant viewing experience even when the film's intellectualism fell short. Searchlight Pictures' rock opera O'Dessa then gave Sink the title role. The film drew mixed to negative reviews, but her performance was praised and seen as a standout.

In April 2025 she returned to Broadway in the comedy John Proctor Is the Villain, playing Shelby Holcomb at the Booth Theatre. The play and her performance won critical acclaim. Christian Lewis of Variety said she "gives a spellbinding performance as a girl who is deeply pained but shielded with thick armor". He called the character "smart but underestimated, and ready to harness her rage against the patriarchy". The role earned Sink a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play.

Robert Icke's second production of Romeo and Juliet was set to give her a West End debut in March 2026, playing Juliet at the Harold Pinter Theatre. On screen, she is slated to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: Brand New Day, in 2026, in an undisclosed role. She will reprise that role in Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. Sink will also executive-produce the film adaptation of John Proctor Is the Villain.

  • At Paris Fashion Week in 2018, Sink walked the runway in her modeling debut at age 15. She later modeled for brands including Miu Miu and Kate Spade New York. In July 2023 she was announced as a global ambassador for Armani Beauty. In March 2025 she fronted a recycled nylon campaign for Prada alongside Benedict Cumberbatch.

Media outlets describe her as a fashion icon, and her wavy red hair is cited as her trademark. Vogue wrote that her wardrobe "effortlessly achieves both a youthful sensibility and sophisticated style".

Sink told Variety that she began having panic attacks as young as 11. She guards her privacy for a professional reason. She believes the less the public knows about an actor's personal life, the more believable the roles can be. In her words: "I think the louder that gets, the quieter the impact of your characters can be." She identifies as a feminist.

In 2015 Sink became vegetarian after watching the 2008 documentary Food, Inc. A year later she went vegan, inspired by the family of her Glass Castle co-star Woody Harrelson. In 2019 she said she supports local animal shelters and encouraged fans to become vegetarians or vegans.
