  • Shawn Adam Levy was born on the 23rd of July 1968 in Montreal, Quebec. He grew up in a Jewish family with two sisters named Jodi and Debby. As a teenager he attended St. George's High School while training at the Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Training Center in New York's Catskills. His early ambition focused on acting rather than directing. He enrolled in the performing arts program at Yale University where he graduated in 1989. During his time at Yale he became interested in directing and moved to Los Angeles to study film making. He received an MFA degree from the USC School of Cinematic Arts in 1994.

  • Levy began his professional career while pursuing his undergraduate and graduate degrees in the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s. He made his acting debut in Zombie Nightmare which is a low-budget horror film released in 1987. The film portrayed him as Jim Bratten the leader of a group of teenagers. This movie later appeared in an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. He also appeared in the 1988 film Liberace: Behind the Music. Through the end of the 1990s Levy worked primarily as a television director of teen dramas like Nickelodeon's The Secret World of Alex Mack and Animorphs. He was the primary director and executive producer for season three of the Disney Channel coming-of-age show The Famous Jett Jackson from 1998 to 2002. He directed 47 episodes of that series and its companion film in 2001.

  • Levy made his feature film directorial debut in 1997 with the family films Address Unknown and Just in Time. His first theatrical release came in 2002 with the teen comedy Big Fat Liar. The 2003 rom com Just Married made more than $100 million in the box office. For the remainder of the decade he worked successfully on big-budget family films including Cheaper by the Dozen released in 2003. He directed The Pink Panther in 2006 and the Night at the Museum franchise which ran from 2006 to 2014. The first Night at the Museum film became his most commercially successful project at the time. It stood as one of the highest-grossing films of 2006. During this period he also produced the 2008 films What Happens in Vegas and The Rocker while executive producing The WB dramedy Pepper Dennis in 2006.

  • In the mid-2000s Levy and his company 21 Laps signed a production deal with 20th Century Fox that was renewed in 2010. He began directing the sci-fi drama Real Steel in 2011 starring Hugh Jackman. Executive produced by Steven Spielberg the film received mixed critical reviews. It earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects. Outside of 20th Century Fox Levy expanded 21 Laps' range beyond family-friendly comedies. This included producing the A24 drama The Spectacular Now in 2013 and the ensemble dramedy This Is Where I Leave You in 2014. He served as a producer on the 2016 sci-fi film Arrival which won an Academy Award. For his role in Arrival Levy was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. In August 2023 he became the inaugural recipient of the Norman Jewison Award for career achievement at the TIFF Tribute Awards.

  • Levy was an executive producer through the entire run of the Netflix original series Stranger Things. He directed the third and fourth episodes of each of the show's first four seasons. He also directed the sixth and seventh episodes of the final season. In December 2017 Levy signed a four-year contract with Netflix to create TV projects exclusively for the streaming entertainment company. In 2020 21 Laps extended its deal with Netflix and signed a first look deal. He directed the Netflix limited series All the Light We Cannot See in 2023. His work on Stranger Things earned him multiple accolades including nominations for Outstanding Drama Series from the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2018 and 2019. The series also won awards from the Producers Guild of America and Critics' Choice Awards during that period.

  • Levy has recently collaborated with Ryan Reynolds by directing Free Guy released in 2021. He followed this with The Adam Project in 2022 and Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024. The latter film emerged as his highest-grossing film and the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. Following the success of Deadpool & Wolverine Ryan Reynolds announced in November 2024 that he was writing an untitled film starring himself and Hugh Jackman to be directed by Levy. In September 2023 Levy stated that a sequel to Free Guy was being revised in response to the film Barbie. He noted that they would only make Free Guy 2 if it differed significantly from other movies about self-awareness in fictional worlds. These projects contributed to his collective box office gross reaching $3.5 billion worldwide.

  • In July 2002 it was reported that Levy would direct the film adaptation of the comic strip Zits for Universal Pictures. By the 24th of August 2002 he was attached to direct a Boston-set film adaptation of Nick Hornby's book Fever Pitch which had previously been adapted into a 1997 British film. Gwyneth Paltrow was approached to play the female lead but ultimately rejected the role. On the 13th of May 2003 Brian Robbins signed on to direct the project replacing Levy. On the 5th of February 2007 it was announced that Levy would direct superhero film The Flash for Warner Bros. Pictures before leaving the project in October 2007. In October 2014 Fox acquired rights to adapt Minecraft for a film with Levy directing him before departing due to creative differences. That film was eventually directed by Jared Hess and released on the 4th of April 2025. Other cancelled projects included The Talent Thief The Hardy Men and a remake of Starman which Levy described as unlikely in August 2021.
