Vecna (Stranger Things)

  • Vecna kills by making his victims relive the worst moments of their lives. He is the main antagonist of the Netflix series Stranger Things, played by Jamie Campbell Bower. The character debuted in the show's fourth season as a malevolent being living in the Upside Down, a mirroring alternate dimension. Before he murders someone, he haunts them with horrifying visions of their past traumas. The killings that follow are sadistic and brutal. The same figure also answers to the names Henry Creel, One, and Mr. Whatsit. Three names hint at three very different lives. Who was the person behind the monster? What made him this way? And how much of the terror that had already struck the town of Hawkins was his doing?

  • On the 20th of November 2020, Jamie Campbell Bower was cast under a name that did not belong to the villain. The part was listed as Peter Ballard, a friendly orderly at a psychiatric hospital. In a 2022 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bower said: "I have no idea where the name Peter Ballard came from. I can only apologize to fans of the show for being part of such a massive red herring."

The Duffer Brothers say Vecna was on their minds as far back as the development of the first season. Offers came to introduce him through spin-off comics or books. They turned those down, because they needed time to work out who the character was and what role he would play in the series.

For the villain's menace, the brothers looked to Pinhead, Pennywise and Freddy Krueger. They wanted someone meaner, darker and more menacing for the show. Their Vecna would traumatize a victim first, then kill in a horrifying way by breaking bones and gouging out eyes. The name is loosely borrowed from a Dungeons & Dragons character, as are the Demogorgons and the Mind Flayer.

Makeup artist Barrie Gower created the look of Vecna, and of the other creatures of the Upside Down. Bower had to wear the prosthetic suit for seven to ten hours at each filming session. The skin was designed to look "anemic." Gower said the body showed its merger with the toxic environment through a "lot of roots and vines and very organic shapes and fibrous muscle tissue."

Gower's team began with a life cast, a full body cast of Bower, so the effects could stay mostly practical. They reduced the cast by a certain percentage all over, so the finished suit would sit skin-tight. From the resulting plaster form, sculptors modeled the body in Plasticine, which took several weeks. The model was split into about 18 pieces. Each piece went onto its own former of fiberglass or epoxy resin. Molds of the Plasticine pieces then produced prosthetic appliances in a mixture of materials.

Bower brought references of his own to the performance. He has cited Pinhead from the Hellraiser franchise, along with the Draculas of Christopher Lee and Gary Oldman. His other touchstones include The Shining from 1980, Funny Games from 1997, Dark City from 1998 and Alone from 2020. Beneath all that sculpted tissue was a character who had once been a boy with a family.

  • Henry Creel was born in Nevada in 1947, the son of Victor, a veteran of World War II, and Virginia. He had a younger sister named Alice. Henry was treated as an outcast throughout his childhood. Most of the children around him considered him "broken" beyond repair, and he felt misunderstood and cut off even from his own family.

Somewhere in the caves near Rachel, Nevada, Henry went down a mineshaft and met a scientist. He asked whether the man needed help. The scientist shot him in the hand. Henry answered by hitting the man with a rock. Inside the scientist's case was a stone made of particles of the Mind Flayer. When Henry touched it, he was carried into another dimension. There the entity told him to "find me," and it infected him through the wound in his hand.

The wounded scientist warned Henry to resist the Mind Flayer, or it would swallow everything. Henry killed him with his newfound powers. The Mind Flayer then blocked the memory so that Henry would never learn the truth. It took the form of a cave in his mind, one the adult Henry was too afraid to enter.

In 1959 the Creels moved to Hawkins, Indiana. Virginia's great-uncle had died and left a small fortune, enough to buy a new house. In the attic Henry found black widow spiders and became fascinated by them. He discovered that he could enter the minds of animals, or kill them, with his psychic abilities. The more he practiced, the more terrifying visions and nightmares he gave his family. Victor was convinced the house was haunted. Virginia worked out that the cause was Henry.

After speaking with Martin Brenner, Virginia decided to hand her son over for experimentation. Henry read her mind and learned her plan. He killed Virginia and Alice and tried to kill Victor, but the effort exhausted his powers and put him in a coma. Victor took the blame for the murders. Henry was publicly declared dead. In reality, Dr. Brenner had taken him into custody.

  • At Hawkins National Lab, Henry became Brenner's first test subject and received a new name, Subject 001, or "One." Brenner struggled to keep him under control. Eventually he implanted a chip in Henry's neck to suppress his powers. Brenner also transfused Henry's blood into pregnant women, hoping their babies would inherit his abilities. Henry later became an orderly and assisted in the experiments. It was there that he met Subject 011, known as Eleven.

Seventeen children with psychic abilities eventually came under One's watch, though none seemed as powerful as he was. He took a liking to Eleven and befriended her. After watching the other subjects bully her, he decided the two of them were alike, and that the world would never understand either one. He helped her sharpen her powers. Then he offered her a chance to escape.

One handed Eleven a key card and told her to meet him in the basement. There he explained that the chip in his neck kept him from leaving. Eleven removed it and learned that One was Henry. Guards caught them. One dispatched the guards and told Eleven to wait for him in a closet. He then massacred everyone in the facility except Brenner.

He explained his origins and crimes to the horrified young Eleven and offered to join forces with her to take over the world. She refused. Drawing on positive memories of her mother, she overpowered him and banished him to an alien parallel dimension, later named "The Abyss." Its hostile environment turned him into a mutilated, burned creature, later dubbed "Vecna."

Over the next four years, Vecna gained control of the dimension's lifeforms through a shared hive mind. At the center of that control was his link to a powerful entity later called the Mind Flayer. It used him as a vessel to exert influence over the human world.

  • In 1983, Eleven unwittingly opened the Mothergate and created the Upside Down. Vecna chose not to act directly. Instead he let a lone Demogorgon explore Hawkins and find a human host, and that host turned out to be Will Byers.

Will evaded the creature for a week in the Upside Down before the Demogorgon captured him. He was brought to Vecna in the Hawkins Library. Vecna told him that the two of them would do "such beautiful things" together. He infected Will with a tentacle, which tied the boy to the hive mind. Will was rescued by his friends and family, but he stayed changed, and began to see flashes of the Upside Down.

In 1984, Vecna and the Mind Flayer launched their first attempt to invade Earth. Using Will's link to the hive mind, Vecna had the Mind Flayer possess the boy. Through Will, they telekinetically built a series of tunnels from the Mothergate beneath Hawkins, and spied on their enemies. Will was also used to trick soldiers of Hawkins Lab into entering the tunnels, where adolescent Demogorgons killed them. The plan collapsed when Eleven closed the Mothergate, which killed every Upside Down creature that had entered Earth. Joyce Byers burned the piece of the Mind Flayer out of Will's body.

In 1985 the Soviets opened a gate of their own. That let the burned-out piece of the Mind Flayer become active again. Vecna had several Hawkins residents flayed and brought under his control, and their bodies formed a giant flesh monster meant to kill Eleven. The monster died when the Soviet gate was closed, but not before it injured Eleven. In that moment, Vecna drained her powers. With them in his hands, he no longer needed to work through proxies.

  • In 1986, Henry began terrorizing Hawkins himself, using Eleven's stolen powers to murder students at Hawkins High School by telepathy. Among the victims were Chrissy Cunningham, Fred Benson and Patrick McKinney, who shared symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Eddie Munson was accused of the killings. Eddie and Dustin Henderson gave the killer the alias "Vecna," because he resembled the Dungeons & Dragons character of that name.

Max Mayfield nearly died at his hands, until her friends found a way to break his influence using music. He next possessed Nancy Wheeler and revealed his past to her. Then he showed her a vision of the future, in which Hawkins is torn apart by cracks, and freed her. Nancy and her friends worked out that Vecna needed to open four gates into the Upside Down to carry out his plan. Three had formed at the sites of his murders.

Max tried to provoke Vecna while her friends traveled to the Upside Down to kill him. Eleven sensed his return, entered Max's mind and confronted him. There the truth came out. Vecna was the alpha of the Upside Down and the mastermind behind its earlier attacks on Hawkins, going back to the disappearance of Will in 1983. He was a vengeful misanthrope bent on human extinction, and he pursued it by aiding the Mind Flayer.

Vecna possessed and killed Max before Eleven overpowered him. Nancy, Steve Harrington and Robin Buckley severely wounded his physical form, and he escaped. Eleven revived Max. But Max's brief death opened the fourth gate, and cracks spread across Hawkins, letting the Upside Down begin to infiltrate the city. That infiltration set the stage for what he would do to the town's children in 1987.

  • In 1987, Vecna began kidnapping the children of Hawkins with the help of Demogorgons. To the children he appeared in his human form as Henry Creel, and he called himself "Mr. Whatsit," after a character in the 1962 novel A Wrinkle in Time. His first victim was Holly Wheeler. She ended up inside Vecna's memories, where she met Max, who was also trapped there.

Vecna next targeted Derek Turnbow, Holly's classmate and bully. Steve, Lucas, Erica and others worked together to stop him. The military detained every child in Hawkins who could be a potential victim. Soon afterward, Vecna and several Demogorgons attacked the military base and took several children. He told Will that he planned to use the children to reshape the world, since they were the perfect vessels. Then he seemed to retreat into the Upside Down.

He had imprisoned the children in the Abyss, a separate world joined to Hawkins through the Upside Down. It turned out to be an interdimensional wormhole, formed when Eleven made contact with a Demogorgon. Max escaped. Holly was recaptured.

Vecna tried to merge the two worlds, using the children as psychic vessels. Max, Eleven and Kali confronted and stopped him, and his true nature was exposed to the children. While the rest of the rescue party entered the Abyss, Vecna followed the kids into the one memory that terrifies him.

That memory was the stone in the Nevada mineshaft. Will watched it telepathically and concluded that Henry was as much a victim as he was himself. He urged Henry to fight back. Henry refused, saying the Mind Flayer had irrevocably corrupted him. He did not control the entity, and it did not control him. He had embraced it, and now they were "one."

In the Abyss, Eleven tore Vecna free of the Mind Flayer's tendrils, and the two fought. The rest of the party slew the Mind Flayer. That weakened Vecna, because his connection to the entity ran in both directions. Will restrained him telekinetically and snapped off his left hand. Eleven then impaled him on a spike. After the children were freed, Joyce Byers found him still barely alive and decapitated him with an axe. That ended his reign of terror. Critics, however, had already passed their verdict on him.

  • Critics responded warmly to Jamie Campbell Bower's Vecna. Patrick Caoile of Collider wrote, "For the first time, Stranger Things gives us a villain with layers." He praised the path from Henry's traumatic childhood, through the abusive experiments he endured as One, to his role as the Mind Flayer's top general. Robert Brian Taylor, also of Collider, wrote, "He's a compelling presence from the moment he first appears." He called Vecna's monologue in episode seven "hypnotizing" and "Stranger Things at its best."

Devon Ivie of Vulture noted that Bower plays three characters, each more unsettling than the last. They are a friendly Hawkins Laboratory orderly, Henry Creel, and Vecna. Tara Bennett of IGN called the performance "masterful." Michael Walsh of Nerdist said it was Bower's best yet. David Benedict of Variety credited Bower with holding focus amid one theatrical spectacle after another. Movie Web named Vecna the best villain in Stranger Things, and Comic Book Resources ranked him first on its list of "10 Best Sci-Fi Villains."

In 2023, Bower was nominated for the Critics' Choice Super Award for Best Villain in a Series. He was also nominated for the MTV Movie and TV Award for Best Villain.

Henry's backstory has reached the stage as well. In the prequel play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, Louis McCartney plays Henry in events from before the series begins.

In November 2025, Vecna was added as a cosmetic outfit to Fortnite Battle Royale. In January 2026, he became a playable Killer in Dead by Daylight.
