  • David Harbour made his television debut in 1999 on Law & Order, playing a waiter. He was born on the 10th of April 1975, and he is an American actor. A waiter is about as small as a screen part gets. So how does an actor go from that credit to a face that audiences around the world recognize? What did he study, and where did he learn his craft? What filled the long years of supporting work in between? And what did he have to survive away from the cameras? The answers start in the state of New York, long before any of the famous roles.

  • David Kenneth Harbour was born in White Plains, New York, to Kenneth and Nancy Harbour. His mother's maiden name was Riley. Both parents worked in real estate, his mother in residential property and his father in commercial.

Byram Hills High School in Armonk, New York, was where Harbour studied alongside the future actors Sean Maher and Eyal Podell. He then went to Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. He graduated in 1997 with a major in drama and Italian, and he joined the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

From 1994 to 1997, Harbour also performed with The Theater at Monmouth at Cumston Hall in Monmouth, Maine. There he acted in Shakespeare productions, including The Tempest, Much Ado About Nothing, The Winter's Tale, and Hamlet.

New York City gave the young Harbour a second education. He played in underground poker clubs, and he says he personally knew the gangster who inspired John Malkovich's character Teddy KGB in the 1998 film Rounders. Within two years of leaving Dartmouth, he would be working professionally on Broadway.

  • The Rainmaker, in a Broadway revival, gave Harbour his first professional job in 1999. The following year he appeared Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre in Stranger. In 2001 he played Moses John Jackson in The Invention of Love at the Lyceum Theatre.

Shakespeare kept returning to his career. In 2002 he played Antonio in Twelfth Night at the Delacorte Theater, and in 2003 he played Arcite in The Two Noble Kinsmen at The Public Theater. In 2008 he came back to the Delacorte as Laertes and the Ghost of Hamlet's Father in Hamlet.

The Tony Awards recognized him in 2005. He was nominated for Best Featured Actor in a Play for playing Nick in the revival of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at the Longacre Theatre.

Two epic productions followed. In 2006 and 2007 he appeared in all three parts of The Coast of Utopia at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, as Nicholas Stankevich, George Herwegh, and Doctor Bazarov. In 2010 and 2011 he played Bassanio in The Merchant of Venice at the Broadhurst Theatre. In 2012 and 2013 he played John Williamson in Glengarry Glen Ross at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.

His West End debut came only in 2022, in Mad House at the Ambassadors Theatre, where he played Michael.

  • In 2002, Harbour guest-starred on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, playing a child murderer. Seven years later, he earned praise as the spree killer Paul Devildis in an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Crime dramas kept casting him in dark parts.

Film work arrived steadily. Brokeback Mountain came in 2005, and in Revolutionary Road he played Shep Campbell. In Quantum of Solace he was the CIA agent Gregg Beam, and in State of Play he was Russell Crowe's source. His other credits from these years include The Green Hornet, End of Watch, and Between Us.

Television gave him recurring work too. He played the MI6 agent Roger Anderson in the ABC series Pan Am. From 2012 to 2014 he was Elliot Hirsch in The Newsroom, and in 2013 he took a small role as a head doctor in Elementary.

In 2014, Harbour played Dr. Reed Akley in the first season of the historical drama Manhattan. That season ran for ten episodes. The same year he also held a main role as David Patrick in State of Affairs, which ran for thirteen episodes.

  • Netflix cast Harbour in 2015 as Chief Jim Hopper in the science fiction horror series Stranger Things. The show ran from 2016 to 2025, and he was a main cast member for 42 episodes.

Awards attention followed quickly. In 2017 and 2018, Harbour received Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. In 2018 he was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a series, miniseries or television film.

His awards list also records a 2017 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards category for Best TV Supporting Actor. It lists a 2018 Critics' Choice Television Awards category as well, again for supporting actor in a drama series.

In 2017 he shared an Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series with the rest of the cast. The Actor Awards list also shows him in the individual category for a male actor in a drama series, in both 2018 and 2020.

  • Hellboy in 2019 gave Harbour the title role in a superhero reboot. The film also brought him a Golden Raspberry Awards nomination for Worst Actor in 2020.

Marvel offered a different kind of part. In Black Widow in 2021, he played Alexei Shostakov, also known as Red Guardian, a character he reprised in Thunderbolts* in 2025. The Critics' Choice Super Awards listed him in 2025 for Best Actor in a Superhero Movie for that second film. He also voiced Red Guardian in the animated series What If...? and Marvel Zombies.

In Violent Night in 2022, a Christmas action comedy, Harbour played Santa Claus, whose name in the credits is Nicomund the Red. The next year Neill Blomkamp directed him in Gran Turismo, a sports film based on the PlayStation video game series of the same name. Harbour played Jack Salter, a former racer.

His filmography already lists further work. A role as Colonel Samuel R. Trautman is slated for 2027.

  • Creature Commandos, an animated series that began in 2024, gave Harbour a main voice role as Eric Frankenstein. Other animation credits include Fred Kranepool in a 2020 episode of The Simpsons titled "Undercover Burns". He also voiced Tajin in the English dub of the Star Wars: Visions episode "The Elder", and Dan in the 2024 film Night of the Zoopocalypse.

In 2019, Harbour hosted Saturday Night Live, in the episode billed as David Harbour/Camila Cabello. His credits in 2026 include a main role as Floyd Smernitch across seven episodes of DTF St. Louis.

Video games are a personal interest as well as a credit. Harbour enjoys watching Let's Plays and speedruns of old video games. In 2024 he gave both voice and likeness to Edward Carnby in Alone in the Dark. His 2026 credit in Mewgenics is a voice for a cat variant.

  • Sobriety defines the most serious chapter of Harbour's personal story. He has been sober since he was 24. He began drinking as a teenager, and the habit worsened during college. He has described reaching rock bottom, facing homelessness, loneliness, and thoughts of suicide. He decided to stop because he felt "very lonely and needing a different direction in my life". Of drinking again, he has said, "I enjoy consciousness too much now". At 26, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

In an interview with The Guardian in July 2021, about his role in Black Widow, Harbour said he was a socialist. His words were: "I don't know that there's anyone who could disagree with socialist ideology". He described his ideal as "a kindergarten-type society where we share things".

Harbour's earlier relationships were with Alison Sudol and Julia Stiles. In 2019 he began a relationship with the English singer-songwriter Lily Allen. They made their red carpet debut at the 26th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. They married on the 7th of September 2020 in Las Vegas, in a ceremony officiated by an Elvis impersonator. The couple shared a brownstone house in Brooklyn and worked with the architect Ben Bischoff.

In December 2024, The Telegraph reported that the couple had separated, after Allen's dating profile was reportedly spotted on the dating app Raya. Other reports place the separation in early 2025. Allen later said her fifth studio album, West End Girl, was partly based on the "demise" of the relationship and on Harbour's alleged infidelity.

Harbour is a fan of the NHL's New York Rangers. He is also a former believer in the paranormal.
