Electronic Arts announced the development of Star Wars Battlefront II on the 10th of May 2016. DICE led the project while Motive Studios handled the single-player campaign and Criterion Games managed starfighter mechanics. Executive producer Matthew Webster confirmed the worldwide release date as the 17th of November 2017 during Star Wars Celebration in April 2017. The beta test period began for pre-order players on the 4th of October 2017 before expanding to an open beta from October 6 through October 11. A ten-hour trial version became available to EA Access subscribers on the 9th of November 2017.
A tie-in novel titled Star Wars Battlefront II: Inferno Squad arrived on the 25th of July 2017 written by Christie Golden. This book served as a direct prelude to the game following the Galactic Empire's efforts against Saw Gerrera's rebel cell after Rogue One. Creative director Bernd Diemer replaced the paid Season Pass system used in the 2015 predecessor because it had fragmented the player community. The new expansion model allowed all players to access content simultaneously rather than paying for exclusive updates.
Single Player Campaign Narrative
Iden Versio commands Inferno Squad aboard the Rebel Alliance Star Cruiser Invincible Faith during the opening scene of the campaign. She orders her ID10 droid Dio to free her from confinement before erasing an Imperial transmission about Emperor plans to ambush rebels on Endor. Iden escapes out the airlock into deep space and is picked up by the Corvus flagship where she debriefs squadmates Del Meeko and Gideon Hask on their mission success.
During the Battle of Endor Inferno Squad eliminates a rebel patrol guarding the Death Star II shield generator before witnessing the station's destruction in Endor's skies. Admiral Garrick Versio informs his daughter about the Emperor's death while a messenger droid conveys Operation Cinder final command. Iden and Hask travel to Fondor's orbit to protect the Dauntless Star Destroyer housing experimental satellites vital to Operation Cinder. Meanwhile Del heads to Pillio to destroy an Emperor vault where he encounters Luke Skywalker who takes one spoil of conquest for himself before parting amicably.
