  On the ice planet Hoth, a young Luke Skywalker hears the voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi. The Jedi Master instructs him to travel to Dagobah to find Yoda. This moment occurs in 1980 during the filming of The Empire Strikes Back. Earlier, on Tatooine, an elderly hermit rescues Luke and C-3PO from Tusken Raiders. He reveals that Luke's father was killed by Darth Vader. Obi-Wan gives Luke his father's lightsaber and invites him to begin training. When Luke declines, he changes his mind after finding his aunt and uncle dead. During their journey to Alderaan, Obi-Wan feels a great disturbance in the Force. He disables the tractor beam on the Death Star before engaging Vader in a duel. Obi-Wan allows Vader to strike him down and vanishes into the Force. Later, he contacts Luke through the Force to help destroy the station. In Return of the Jedi, Obi-Wan appears at the celebration on Endor alongside Yoda and Anakin Skywalker.

• 2. The Prequel Transformation

  In 1999, a nine-year-old slave named Anakin Skywalker meets Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine. Qui-Gon believes the boy is the Chosen One destined to bring balance to the Force. After securing Anakin's freedom, they travel to Coruscant with Queen Padmé Amidala. On Naboo, they face Darth Maul who mortally wounds Qui-Gon. Obi-Wan defeats Maul as Qui-Gon dies. The dying master asks Obi-Wan to train Anakin without Council approval. Ten years later, Anakin has grown powerful but arrogant. Obi-Wan traces assassins to Kamino where he discovers a clone army derived from bounty hunter Jango Fett. On Geonosis, Obi-Wan confronts Count Dooku but is overpowered by the Sith Lord. Three years after that event, Obi-Wan kills General Grievous on Utapau. He then discovers Anakin has become Darth Vader and led the massacre of the Jedi Temple. On Mustafar, Obi-Wan cuts off several limbs of his former apprentice before leaving him burning to death. He takes Padmé to Polis Massa where she dies giving birth to Luke and Leia.

• 3. Casting Choices And Performances

  George Lucas sought an established star for the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in 1977. He considered Peter Cushing but decided the actor's lean features were better for Grand Moff Tarkin. Producer Gary Kurtz felt a strong character actor was required to convey stability and gravitas. Before Alec Guinness was cast, Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune was considered for the part. Mifune turned down both Obi-Wan and Darth Vader because he thought Star Wars would employ cheap special effects. Once selected, Guinness inspired the cast and crew to work harder during filming. Harrison Ford said he admired Guinness's preparation and kindness toward other actors. Guinness earned the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor and received an Academy Award nomination for his performance. Ewan McGregor portrays Obi-Wan in the prequel trilogy starting with The Phantom Menace in 2001. His performance earned him a Saturn Award nomination for Best Actor. James Arnold Taylor voices Obi-Wan in animated media including The Clone Wars from 2008 to 2020. Stephen Stanton replaced Taylor as the voice in Star Wars Rebels between 2014 and 2018.

  Jude Watson's Jedi Apprentice series follows Obi-Wan's adventures as Qui-Gon's apprentice before The Phantom Menace. Notable events include his battle with Dark Jedi Xanatos and his first independent mission. Watson's Jedi Quest series details his adventures with Anakin leading up to Attack of the Clones. Novels such as Outbound Flight and The Approaching Storm portray his heroism during the Clone Wars. The Last of the Jedi series depicts Obi-Wan adjusting to life as a hermit on Tatooine after Revenge of the Sith. He discovers Vader is still alive by seeing him on the Holonet news source. The novel Kenobi published in 2013 tells the story of Obi-Wan's first days of exile. In Star Wars: Republic comics running from 1998 to 2006, Obi-Wan fights Separatists and is tortured by Asajj Ventress. He apprehends corrupt Jedi Master Quinlan Vos throughout the series. Issue #24 of Marvel's 1977 comic follows Obi-Wan during the Republic era. Owen Lars kills Darth Maul in the Star Wars: Visionaries story Old Wounds set during Luke's childhood.

  The animated series The Clone Wars aired from 2008 to 2014 and again in 2020. Obi-Wan serves as a general earning the appellation The Negotiator for preventing battles without weapons. The series highlights confrontations with General Grievous and an adversarial relationship with Dark Jedi Asajj Ventress. It also features his romance with Duchess Satine Kryze and the return of Darth Maul. Star Wars Rebels ran from 2014 to 2018 taking place five years before Star Wars. In the episode Twin Suns, Obi-Wan mortally wounds Darth Maul during a final lightsaber duel. Reva Sevander appears in the 2022 live-action miniseries Obi-Wan Kenobi as one of the Empire's Inquisitors. She kidnaps Princess Leia to lure Obi-Wan out of hiding on Tatooine. The series originally conceived as a standalone film was cancelled following Solo: A Star Wars Story box office disappointment. Vader arrives on Mapuzo hoping to bait Obi-Wan into revealing himself. Reva leads a siege on the Path facility while Obi-Wan duels Vader on a nearby planet.

  In 2003, the American Film Institute selected Obi-Wen as the 37th-greatest movie hero of all time. IGN listed him as the third-greatest Star Wars character among fans. UGO Networks chose him as one of their favorite heroes of all time. In 2005, a street in the Polish village Grabowiec received the name Ulica Obi-Wana Kenobiego. This translates directly to Obi-Wan Kenobi Street. Most licensed novels and comics produced between 1977 and 2014 were rebranded as Star Wars Legends after Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. These works comprise a separate narrative universe declared non-canon to the franchise. Ewan McGregor and Alec Guinness voices appear in The Force Awakens released in 2015. Both actors provided voices for Rey during her battle against Darth Sidious in The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Luke says Obi-Wan was like a father to him in Heir to the Empire. Obi-Wan replies that he loved Luke like a son before parting ways.
