Star Wars Celebration.
~4 min read · Ch. 1 of 5
The first Star Wars Celebration opened its doors from April 30 to the 2nd of May 1999 at the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum in Denver, Colorado. This event marked a return to large-scale fan gatherings after a gap since 1987. Dan Madsen led the Official Star Wars Fan Club based in that city. He stated that holding the convention there was appropriate because the club's home base was local. The gathering served as a promotional tool for the upcoming release of Episode I , The Phantom Menace just three weeks away.
Activities included actor panels and THX theater demonstrations. Fans viewed behind-the-scenes footage from the new film. The world premiere of the Duel of the Fates music video took place on these grounds. A vendors tent hosted merchandise sales while the museum displayed props from Lucasfilm archives. These items included a full-scale model of Anakin Skywalker's podracer. A life-size X-wing model also stood in the hall. That specific replica measured three-quarters scale and had been created in 1996 for the Special Edition release.
Global Expansion Strategy
Star Wars Celebration II moved operations to Indianapolis, Indiana from May 3 to 5, 2002. Organizers selected the larger Indiana Convention Center to accommodate expected crowds. Initial projections estimated between 15,000 and 20,000 daily attendees based on advance ticket sales. Actual numbers surpassed expectations significantly with an estimated final tally exceeding 75,000 people over three days. Saturday became the busiest day of the event.
The Fan Club store and autograph section drew the largest crowds. Carrie Fisher signed autographs during this period. Rick McCallum presented a spectacular show featuring production insights. The Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis performed a Star Wars 25th Anniversary Concert on Saturday night. This international expansion continued with Celebration Europe held at Earls Court in London from July 13 to 15, 2007. Advance interest forced organizers to move the venue to the larger ExCeL Exhibition Centre. Approximately 30,000 fans attended that gathering. The first event outside the United States showcased restored arcade machines estimated between 30 and 40 units.
