Star Wars: Visions
James Waugh, vice president of franchise content at Lucasfilm, pitched the idea for Star Wars: Visions to Kathleen Kennedy in early 2020. The project required international collaboration during a global pandemic that canceled planned in-person meetings between US executives and Japanese studios. Independent producer Justin Leach and his company Qubic Pictures facilitated discussions across continents when physical travel became impossible. Production of the shorts took place entirely within Japan throughout 2020 and 2021. On the 10th of December 2020, it was announced that the series would consist of ten short films by different animation studios set in the Star Wars universe. At Anime Expo Lite in July 2021, producers revealed the number had decreased from ten to nine because "The Ninth Jedi" originally started as two episodes but merged into one. Seven Japanese animation studios created the first volume including Kamikaze Douga, Studio Colorido, Geno Studio, Trigger, Kinema Citrus, Production I.G, and Science Saru.
A second season expanded the series to include animation studios based in numerous countries beyond Japan. El Guiri from Spain contributed work alongside Cartoon Saloon representing Ireland. Punkrobot brought Chilean perspectives while Aardman represented the United Kingdom. Studio Mir joined from South Korea with Studio La Cachette arriving from France. 88 Pictures emerged from India and D'Art Shtaijo returned for a third time after their initial involvement. Lucasfilm co-produced directly with D'Art Shtaijo on at least one project. Triggerfish operated out of both South Africa and Ireland during production. The creators at each studio received free rein to re-envision ideas of Star Wars as they saw fit while receiving guidance from Lucasfilm's executive team. Waugh described the second volume as "a celebration of the incredible animation happening all around the globe." The second volume was released on the 4th of May 2023 featuring shorts from these diverse international partners.
"The Duel" stood apart by being specifically billed as an alternate history pulled from Japanese lore rather than following established timelines. Lop and Ochō took place during the reign of the Galactic Empire between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope without adhering strictly to canonical events. The Elder unfolded sometime before The Phantom Menace in its own temporal space. The Twins involved remnants of the Imperial Army appearing after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Director Kenji Kamiyama focused heavily on using original lightsaber sounds that children throughout the world recognized when creating The Ninth Jedi. Abel Góngora sought to combine visual elements of the classic trilogy with those of classic anime drawing parallels between manga of the 1960s and cinema tradition of the late 1970s for T0-B1. Eunyoung Choi noted that combining fairy tale-style lessons with advanced technology found in this universe remained particularly important for Akakiri.
Kevin Penkin composed the score for "The Village Bride" while Michiru Oshima handled both "The Twins" and "The Elder." Yoshiaka Dewa created music for "Lop and Ochō" alongside Tatooine Rhapsody. Keiji Inai scored The Duel while A-bee and Keiichiro Shibuya worked together on T0-B1. U-zhaan contributed to Akakiri's soundtrack as Nobuko Toda and Kazuma Jinnouchi crafted The Ninth Jedi's audio landscape. Volume 2 introduced Dan Levy for Sith, Leo Pearson for Screecher's Reach, Andrés Walker and Patricio Portius for In the Stars. Jean-Marc Petsas wrote I Am Your Mother while Jang Young Gyu and Lee Byung-Hoon produced Journey to the Dark Head. Olivier Derivière scored The Spy Dancer and Sneha Khanwalkar handled Bandits of Golak. Daniel Lopatin created Pit's atmosphere and Markus Wormstorm designed Aau's Song soundscape. Soundtracks for each volume were released digitally shortly after their respective premieres.
Rotten Tomatoes reported a 96% approval rating with an average score of 8.2 out of ten based on fifty-three reviews for the first season. Metacritic gave that same season a weighted average of seventy-nine from fifteen critics indicating generally favorable reception. Angie Han praised the anthology for its deep love of Star Wars that could make new fans while reminding old ones why they fell in love initially. Tyler Hersko called it one of if not the best titles coming from Disney ownership era under television or film formats. Brian Lowry described shorts as striking yet noted plenty of room remained for experimentation within unique visions. Jake Kleinman declared Visions a revelation calling Lucasfilm's best story since original trilogy days. Volume two achieved perfect scores across multiple aggregators including Rotten Tomatoes' hundred percent approval and Metacritic's eighty-eight point average. Maggie Lovitt rated second season an A grade stating it delivered some most inspiring stories by blending beauty among stars freely. Kambole Campbell awarded four out five stars noting kaleidoscopic nature made franchise feel new again through international animation houses working various mediums.
Del Rey Books published Ronin: A Visions Novel written by Emma Mieko Candon which built upon The Duel story starting March twenty-first, two thousand and twenty-one release date October twelfth. An art book containing creator interviews plus selected production materials appeared via Dark Horse Comics on April twelfth, two thousand and twenty-two covering all nine shorts collectively. Comic issues emerged sequentially with Takashi Okazaki writing first volume released October twelfth, two thousand and twenty-two followed by Peach Momoko handling Followers Of Ankok November fifteenth, two thousand and twenty-three. Star Wars Celebration in April 2025 announced spin-off series titled Star Wars: Visions Presents beginning with full anime adaptation of The Ninth Jedi set for 2026 broadcast window. These extensions allowed narrative reach beyond original short film format while maintaining creative integrity across different media platforms including novels comics and visual documentation books.
