Star Wars Tales (TV anthology)
Dave Filoni began writing short stories about Jedi characters while traveling to work on the live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian between 2019 and 2023. Carrie Beck, senior vice president of development and production at Lucasfilm, asked if he wanted to turn these ideas into a full series. She compared this opportunity to finding money to revive his previous animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars for a final season on Disney+. In December 2021, the logo for Tales of the Jedi appeared on holiday gifts distributed to Lucasfilm employees alongside logos for other upcoming projects. This name matched an unrelated comic book series published by Dark Horse Comics during the 1990s. Filoni discussed the project in a dedicated panel at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim in May 2022. He revealed that the anthology would consist of six shorts, with five written by himself and one co-written by Charles Murray and Élan Murray. Each short runs approximately fifteen minutes long.
The first installment explores two paths through the life of Ahsoka Tano and the early years of Count Dooku before his fall to the dark side. One path follows Ahsoka across three different eras, starting with her mother taking her on a hunting trip rather than bringing her to the Jedi Order. Filoni felt it was important that Ahsoka's first experience with someone telling her not to be afraid came from her mother. The second path depicts a young Count Dooku and his relationship with his Padawan learner Qui-Gon Jinn. Filoni found Qui-Gon interesting because he held a philosophy different from the Jedi Council. He asked where Qui-Gon learned those beliefs if not from his mentor, Count Dooku. The final episode loosely adapts events from the 2016 novel Ahsoka by E. K. Johnston. The second installment shifts focus to Morgan Elsbeth and former Jedi Barriss Offee during different eras of the timeline. The third chapter centers on bounty hunters Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane confronting old friends on opposite sides of the law.
Animation supervisor Keith Kellogg returned from previous Lucasfilm Animation projects to oversee the visual work. Cinematography and effects lead Joel Aron collaborated with animation provider CGCG Inc to push the limits of their production sandbox. Charles Murray, Nathaniel Villanueva, and Saul Ruiz directed the shorts for Tales of the Jedi. Villanueva, Ruiz, and Steward Lee directed the episodes for Tales of the Empire. Villanueva, Ruiz, and Lee also directed the shorts for Tales of the Underworld. Aron chose to change the lensing style to anamorphic wide-screen format used in live-action films like American Graffiti released in 1973. This allowed for refined depth of field and artificial layers of film grain. For an establishing shot on the planet Dathomir, a physical model of a mountain range was filmed in front of an oil-painted background before animators added computer-generated sets later.
Liam Neeson reprised his role as Qui-Gon Jinn while his son Micheál Richardson voiced a younger version of the character. Matt Lanter returned as Anakin Skywalker from The Clone Wars. Janina Gavankar voiced Ahsoka's mother Pav-ti after appearing as Iden Versio in Star Wars Battlefront II during 2017. Ashley Eckstein continued voicing Ahsoka Tano following her work on previous series. Bryce Dallas Howard announced she would voice Yaddle just one day before the series release. Corey Burton returned as Count Dooku alongside TC Carson as Mace Windu. Ian McDiarmid voiced Darth Sidious while James Arnold Taylor played Obi-Wan Kenobi. Phil LaMarr appeared as Bail Organa and Dee Bradley Baker voiced Captain Rex and other clone troopers. Clancy Brown provided the voice for an Inquisitor in the first installment.
The team used practical effects to create establishing shots that blended physical models with digital environments. For the planet Dathomir, they filmed a physical model of a mountain range against an oil-painted background. Animators then added computer-generated sets over this live-action footage. Aron chose to adopt the wide-screen anamorphic format seen in films like American Graffiti released in 1973. This approach allowed for artificial layers of film grain and refined depth of field. The animation style matched The Clone Wars while overlapping production timelines with Star Wars: The Bad Batch between 2021 and 2024. Lucasfilm Animation worked with CGCG Inc to push the limits of their technical capabilities within each new project. The visual aesthetic evolved from the original Clone Wars look into a more cinematic presentation across all three installments.
Kevin Kiner composed the music for Tales of the Jedi after returning from previous animated series including Rebels and The Bad Batch. He collaborated with his children Sean and Deana on the score starting with the second installment. For Ahsoka's younger years, Kevin reviewed compositions from nearly sixteen years prior to focus on woodwind instruments. Sean and Deana created a new variation of the theme to represent her status as a rōnin during the third short. They studied samurai film music because Filoni was influenced by Studio Ghibli and other Japanese cinema. The Kiners expanded on this rōnin motif and Japanese influences in later scores. Since John Williams did not create a theme for Dooku, they developed a new sound that gets darker across the shorts. Yaddle follows Dooku in his final episode where they revisited synthesizer sounds used in the final season of The Clone Wars along with experimental vocal work.
Rotten Tomatoes reported an approval rating of 100% based on twenty-two reviews for Tales of the Jedi. Critics consensus described it as an absorbing expansion of Star Wars lore under Dave Filoni's reliable stewardship. Metacritic gave the series a score of seventy-eight out of one hundred indicating generally favorable reviews. Brian Young of /Film called the episodes full of pathos and interesting connections to broader lore. Paste magazine awarded the series a grade of eight point two out of ten. ComicBook.com gave the show four out of five stars calling them beautiful and moving. IGN rated the series eight out of ten noting its moody methodical approach. Rotten Tomatoes reported an eighty-eight percent approval rating for Tales of the Empire based on twenty-four reviews. The Underworld installment achieved a perfect one-hundred percent score from twelve reviews. Tales of the Jedi received nominations at the 2023 Golden Reel Awards and Producers Guild of America Awards. The short Devoted was selected for presentation at the 2025 Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
