Kathleen Kennedy was born on the 5th of June 1953 in Berkeley, California. Her father Donald R. Kennedy served as a judge and attorney while her mother Dione Marie worked briefly as a theater actress. She grew up with two sisters including Connie who later managed locations for film crews in British Columbia. Dana Middleton-Silberstein became the third sibling working as a television host and press secretary for Washington state officials. Kennedy graduated from Shasta High School in Redding, California during 1971 before attending San Diego State University. She majored in telecommunications and film studies at that institution. During her final year she secured employment at KCST which is now known as KNSD. The local station employed her as a camera operator, video editor, floor director and eventually news production coordinator.
Steven Spielberg hired Kathleen Kennedy to work as his secretary after observing her interrupting colleagues mid-sentence during meetings about ideas. He recalled how she would put down her pencil and suggest plot twists like having a character get a dog instead of a girl. This organizational ability led to her first film credit as associate producer on Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. She then took an associate producer role on Poltergeist directed by Tobe Hooper in 1982. That same year she co-founded Amblin Entertainment alongside Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall. Thalberg Award with Frank Marshall recognizing their collective contributions.
