Silent Hill: Downpour
The transport vehicle crashes near Silent Hill, sending Murphy Pendleton tumbling into a world that mirrors his guilt. He wakes up free from prison but trapped in the town of Silent Hill. The air is thick with rain and fog as he stumbles through abandoned streets. His clothes become bloodied and torn whenever monsters attack him. He carries no weapon at first, only fear and the memory of his son Charlie drowning years ago. A corrupt corrections officer named George Sewell made a deal to let Murphy kill Patrick Napier, the man who abused Charlie. Now Murphy walks toward the Devil's Pit, where suicidal park ranger J.P. Sater waits. Sater indirectly caused eight children to die before taking his own life. Murphy hears songs from DJ Bobby Ricks trying to lure him out on a boat. But Anne Cunningham, the officer who survived the crash, follows close behind. She wants to arrest him again. When they reach the monastery, Murphy sees the Bogeyman murder a child right before his eyes. The monster wears a sledgehammer and seems to be the relative Murphy was sent to collect. He takes keys from around its neck and runs deeper into the nightmare.
Rain falls heavily over Silent Hill during certain moments, making monsters appear more frequently and behave violently. Fog rolls in when the sky turns gray, hiding threats until it is too late. In the Otherworld, rusted metal covers every surface like dried blood. Red light chases Murphy through narrow corridors, causing harm if he gets too close. Being caught by that light ends the game instantly. He tries to slow it down by knocking items into its path while doors slam shut ahead of him. A massive Wheelman creature sits in a wheelchair, mute and deadly, waiting for Murphy to disable its life support. The environment shifts unpredictably as Murphy moves forward. Doors close suddenly when he runs toward them. Phantom police cruisers roam the streets, alerting groups of monsters if they spot him. Heavy rain makes the town feel alive with danger. Every step risks triggering an attack or revealing a new puzzle. The weather system alternates between fog and varying degrees of rainfall throughout the journey.
Vatra Games used Unreal Engine 3 to build Silent Hill: Downpour after receiving the working title Silent Hill 8 at Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010. Design director Brian Gomez drew inspiration from Brno, Czech Republic, where the studio was located. Seventeenth-century mummies in the Capuchin Crypt and Soviet-era remnants added heaviness to the atmosphere. Propast Macocha, known as Stepmother Abyss, inspired the Devil's Pit level. Early discussions included potential first-person shooter mechanics but settled on third-person view instead. Some developers objected to featuring a criminal protagonist like Murphy Pendleton. Focus testing showed mixed reactions among players regarding his background. Water became the central theme due to its scary nature during storms. Rain was chosen because darkness plays tricks on your eyes. The decision to make Murphy a convict aimed to surprise fans accustomed to ordinary characters uncovering secrets.
Composer Daniel Licht replaced Akira Yamaoka for this installment of the series. He studied previous scores to maintain traditional sound while adding personal touches. Mary Elizabeth McGlynn provided vocals across several tracks and was considered crucial to the music. Licht avoided water-based instruments despite the narrative focus on rain. Instead he used vocals strings guitar mandolin industrial sounds and ambiences. The mandolin served as a nod to the first Silent Hill game. Korn performed the main theme song titled Silent Hill. Konami selected the band from available options though some fans created petitions requesting removal of their contribution. The soundtrack released on the 13th of March 2012 via Milan Records. Critics praised Licht's work even when lamenting Yamaoka's absence. One review noted dead silence made combat commonplace rather than terrifying.

An official patch fixed frame rate and saving issues for both consoles later in 2012. The game initially planned release date was October 2011 before shifting to March 2012. Konami published versions on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 starting the 13th of March in North America followed by Europe and Australia dates. Japan received the PlayStation 3 version on the 8th of November 2012. Backward compatibility with Xbox One arrived in 2016. A Facebook contest ran from 10, the 16th of February 2011 inviting fans to design graveyard sculptures appearing in-game. Downloadable content featuring Anne Cunningham never released became basis for spin-off comic Anne's Story written by Tom Waltz and illustrated by Tristan Jones. IDW Publishing printed four issues between September and December 2014 reprinting them in second volume of Silent Hill Omnibus October 2015.
