  • Paris Hilton became so inescapable in 2007 that parts of the American press tried to stop mentioning her. The Associated Press attempted to leave her out for the week of the 19th of February 2007. On the 26th of June 2007, host Mika Brzezinski refused to read a report about Hilton's release from jail on the show Morning Joe. Three days later, Us Weekly published its first issue billed as "100% Paris-Free". The Pew Research Center found that 34 percent of Americans followed news about her very or fairly closely. That outpaced interest in the 2008 presidential campaign, the G8 summit, and talks between George W. Bush and Vladimir Putin. Hilton was born on the 17th of February 1981, a great-granddaughter of Conrad Hilton, who founded Hilton Hotels. How does an inherited name turn into a spectacle that newsrooms try to ignore? Was the fame an accident, a performance, or a plan? And what happens to a person whom millions say they dislike, yet cannot stop searching for?

  • Paris Hilton's mother once recalled her young daughter saving money to buy monkeys, snakes, and goats. She also remembered the day a snake was left out of its cage at the Waldorf. Hilton was the oldest of four children born to Richard Hilton, a businessman, and Kathy Hilton, a socialite and former child actress. Her sister is Nicholai, known as Nicky, and her brothers are Barron and Conrad. The family moved often, living in Beverly Hills, in the Hamptons, and in a suite at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhattan. Relatives described her as very much a tomboy who dreamed of becoming a veterinarian.

The household was strict. Her parents did not let her date, wear make-up, or go to school dances. Her mother signed her up for etiquette classes, planning to present her as a debutante. Hilton resisted at first because it did not feel real or natural to her. She later called the lessons very proper, very prim, almost like a Stepford wife. Family friends included Lionel Richie, Donald Trump, and Michael Jackson.

Her schooling was scattered. She attended the Buckley School and St. Paul the Apostle School, finishing eighth grade in 1995. Her first year of high school, 1995-96, was at Marywood-Palm Valley in Rancho Mirage, California. In 1996 the family moved to New York City, where she joined the Dwight School. At 15 she took classes at Professional Children's School, and she skated and played ice hockey. New York was where the rebellion began, with skipped classes and sneaking out to parties. Her mother put it this way: "it got very out of control and I was scared for her."

At 16, Hilton was sent to a series of boarding schools for emotionally troubled teens. One was Provo Canyon School, where she says staff abused her mentally, physically, and sexually. She stayed 11 months and was released in early 1999, around her 18th birthday. She returned to Dwight but dropped out a few months later, and she eventually earned a GED. A classmate remembered her as sort of more sophisticated and different from everybody else.

  • In March 1999, Hilton and her sister Nicky attended the New York premiere of Cruel Intentions, one of their first outings after her release from boarding school. That October, a New Yorker profile by Bob Morris called the pair the littlest socialites in town. Jason Binn, publisher of Hamptons magazine, said they treated nightlife like a job. In November 2001, businessman George J. Maloof Jr. flew her on his private jet and paid her to attend the opening of the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

At 19, she signed with T Management, the modeling agency of Donald Trump. She cited designers Patricia Field and Betsey Johnson as inspirations and walked for Catherine Malandrino and Marc Bouwer. In the September 2000 issue of Vanity Fair, a photo shoot by David LaChapelle showed her with Nicky. LaChapelle said she had a charisma you could not take your eyes off. In February 2001, The Guardian hailed her as "New York's leading It Girl". That year she also played herself in a cameo in the comedy Zoolander, opposite Ben Stiller.

The breakthrough came in 2003 with the Fox series The Simple Life. Hilton and her childhood friend Nicole Richie spent a month living with a family in Altus, Arkansas. The show was first pitched to both Paris and Nicky, but Nicky was shy about the spotlight and declined. The series premiered on the 2nd of December 2003. Its first episode drew 13 million viewers and lifted Fox's adult 18-49 rating by 79 percent.

That audience arrived on the heels of a scandal. A tape of Hilton with her then-boyfriend Rick Salomon had leaked online shortly before the premiere. Salomon sued the company that distributed it, along with the Hilton family. Hilton countersued the company, Kahatani Ltd., for US$30 million over privacy and emotional distress. In April 2004, Salomon began selling the tape himself as 1 Night in Paris through Red Light District Video. By July 2004, he dropped his suit, and he and the video company agreed to pay Hilton US$400,000 plus a share of sales profit. In 2013 she said she never made a dollar from it.

The show itself cracked in 2005, when Fox canceled it after three seasons following a dispute between Hilton and Richie. It was speculated that Richie had shown one of Hilton's homemade tapes to friends. On the 28th of November 2005, the network E! announced it had picked up the show, and filming of a fourth season began on the 27th of February 2006. The two reconciled in October 2006. The fifth and final season ran from the 28th of May to the 5th of August 2007, the same summer Hilton served her jail term.

  • Hilton's first perfume, made with Parlux Fragrances in 2004, was meant for a limited release. Demand was so high that supplies ran short until December. Parlux sales rose 47 percent after its introduction, and the company went on to release many more fragrances under her name, including some for men. Her perfume line alone has brought in over US$2.5 billion in revenue. The same year brought a purse collection for the Japanese label Samantha Thavasa and a jewelry line sold on Amazon.com. Later came DreamCatchers hair extensions, a footwear line with Antebi, and clothing sold at the Kitson Boutique in Los Angeles. From 2011 she opened boutiques in places such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India, Peru, and Chile. In 2014 she unveiled the Paris Beach Club, an urban beach club in Parañaque, the Philippines.

Her writing sold too. Confessions of an Heiress, co-written with Merle Ginsberg, reached seventh on The New York Times Best Seller list. Your Heiress Diary followed in November 2005. Her memoir, Paris: The Memoir, was published by Harper Collins on the 14th of March 2023. It debuted at number three, selling 13,640 print copies, and had sold 46,637 by October 2023.

The acting reviews were harsher. House of Wax, her first major film role, grossed over US$70 million worldwide in 2005. It also earned her a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actress and a Teen Choice Award for Best Scream. TV Guide called her talentless, while a View London critic said she did better than you might expect. At the 29th Razzie Awards she won Worst Actress for The Hottie and the Nottie and Worst Supporting Actress for Repo! The Genetic Opera, in which she played Amber Sweet.

Music fared better. Her debut album Paris came out on the 22nd of August 2006 and reached number six on the Billboard 200. It sold over 600,000 copies worldwide. Its single "Stars Are Blind" was played on more than 125 pop stations in the United States and reached the top ten in 17 countries. She later released the studio album Infinite Icon in 2024.

On the 28th of June 2012, at Brazil's Pop Music Festival, Hilton made her debut as a DJ. Deadmau5, Samantha Ronson, and Afrojack reacted negatively. Within two years she was the highest-paid female DJ. Her Ibiza residency at Amnesia in August 2013 earned a four-year renewal. In June 2015 she played Summerfest in Milwaukee before 50,000 concert-goers, despite an online campaign of over 7,000 votes to remove her from the bill.

The newest ventures are digital. Beginning in 2021, her NFT collections included one with designer Blake Kathryn that brought in US$1.5 million. She also launched virtual worlds on Roblox and The Sandbox. By February 2024, her Roblox world Slivingland had been visited by over 3.4 million users. Her company, founded in 2006 as Paris Hilton Entertainment, was renamed 11:11 Media in 2021.

  • Former manager Jason Moore said Hilton was the ultimate package that corporate America would want to build for itself as a marketing tool. The look had clear parts: long bleached blonde hair, blue contact lenses over naturally brown eyes, and a valley girl accent. Her wardrobe ran to pink, Juicy Couture tracksuits, rhinestones, trucker hats, and oversized sunglasses. A Chihuahua named Tinkerbell, dubbed the accessory dog, appeared with her in all five seasons of The Simple Life. Tinkerbell was reported to have died in April 2015 at age 14. For her pets, Hilton once had a 300-square-foot house built, at an estimated cost of US$325,000.

Hilton has insisted the dim-witted blonde was never real. She said people assume she is a ditzy blonde because of the reality show, but that was just a character she created. Three of her phrases, "That's hot", "loves it", and "sliving", are registered trademarks. On the 6th of September 2007 she sued Hallmark Cards in federal court over a greeting card that used her face and "That's hot". The Ninth Circuit denied Hallmark's motion to dismiss, and the two sides later settled out of court.

Public opinion was blunt. A 2006 poll by the Associated Press and AOL ranked her the second-worst celebrity role model, behind Britney Spears. A June 2007 Gallup poll found 63 percent of Americans felt very unsympathetic toward her. The 2007 Guinness World Records named her the most overrated celebrity. Forbes ranked her most overexposed in 2006 and 2008, noting that 65 percent of Americans would use that word about her. Most celebrities, it said, score between 3 and 7 percent at their peak. Yet she was among the most popular search terms on Google, AOL, and Lycos from 2004 to 2008.

Hilton and the press needed each other. Sheeraz Hasan, who founded Hollywood.TV and briefly advised her, said he built a major paparazzi company on her back, with over 100 photographers working in Los Angeles. TMZ founder Harvey Levin said coverage of her drew viewers to his site. Perez Hilton took his stage name from her. She also staged what writers called pseudo-events, designed to be photographed and reported.

In December 2009, CNN.com asked, "Why has Paris Hilton disappeared?" It blamed an oversaturated public and a new appetite for other celebrities. She adapted. By 2021 she reached over 60 million users across her social platforms. In 2020, her catchphrase "That's Hot" generated more than 4.8 billion impressions on TikTok.

  • On the 7th of September 2006, the Los Angeles Police Department arrested Hilton and charged her with driving under the influence, with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent. Her license was suspended that November. On the 22nd of January 2007, she pleaded no contest to reckless driving and received 36 months' probation and fines of about US$1,500. On the 27th of February she was stopped for driving with a suspended license and signed an agreement not to drive. The next month she was caught driving 70 mph in a 35 mph zone, at night, without headlights.

Prosecutors argued these incidents, plus her failure to enroll in a court-ordered alcohol-education program, violated probation. On the 4th of May 2007, Judge Michael T. Sauer sentenced her to 45 days in jail. A petition created the next day by Joshua Morales asked California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for a pardon. Hilton dropped her appeal plans and began her term on the 5th of June, two days after attending the MTV Movie Awards. She entered the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, California.

Two days later, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca resentenced her to 40 days of home confinement with an electronic monitor, citing an unspecified medical condition. Baca said punishing celebrities more than the average American is not justice. On the 8th of June, Sauer ordered her back to court and declined a private briefing on her condition. He returned her to jail to serve the original sentence. Hilton shouted, "It's not right!" and asked to hug her mother. She was moved to the Twin Towers Correctional Facility and returned to Lynwood on the 13th of June. She was released on the 26th of June 2007.

In jail she was influenced by minister Marty Angelo and quoted his autobiography, Once Life Matters: A New Beginning, in a Larry King interview two days after release. She told King she had taken Adderall for ADHD since childhood.

Trouble returned in 2010. On the 2nd of July she was accused of smoking marijuana at a World Cup match in South Africa, and the case was dismissed. Two weeks later she was detained and released after being caught with cannabis at an airport in Corsica. On the 27th of August, Las Vegas police arrested her on suspicion of cocaine possession, after finding 0.8 grams in her handbag. On the 17th of September she pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors, and was sentenced to one year of probation, 200 hours of community service, a US$2,000 fine, and drug treatment. On the 21st of September, immigration officers at Narita Airport in Tokyo detained her and her sister overnight. Japan denied her entry the next day, and she was deported. Indonesia and Malaysia stops on her Asian tour were canceled.

A different kind of crime came from outside. Between 2008 and 2009, a group of fashion-motivated thieves known as the Bling Ring burgled her house, reportedly seven times. She was their first and main celebrity target. Hilton did not file a report until nearly US$2 million in jewellery, clothing, cash, and other items had been stolen. She later lent her home to director Sofia Coppola for two weeks of filming The Bling Ring in 2013.

  • The YouTube Originals documentary This Is Paris, directed by Alexandra Dean, arrived in 2020. In it, Hilton described the emotional, verbal, and physical abuse she says she suffered at boarding schools. She said she trusted Dean and found the filming process a healing space. Other former students from Provo Canyon School described solitary confinement, forced medication, restraint, battery, and strangulation. The film drew over 16 million views in its first month and was judged a successful rebranding of her image. It also boosted interest in #BreakingCodeSilence, a viral movement of people sent as youths to punitive residential programs.

On the 9th of October 2020, Hilton held a rally outside Provo Canyon School in Utah. On the 8th of February 2021, she testified before the Utah State Legislature in support of a measure for more oversight of youth residential treatment centers. The measure would also require them to document the use of restraints. She said staff had beaten her, subjected her to strip searches, force-fed her medication, watched her shower, and put her in solitary confinement without clothes. On the 2nd of March, the Utah Legislature approved the bill, known as SB127.

On the 20th of October 2021, she held a press conference at the United States Capitol with lawmakers Ro Khanna and Jeff Merkley. They were advocating the Accountability for Congregate Care Act, which would create a bill of rights for children in such facilities. In 2022 she testified before the House Committee on Ways and Means on child welfare. In 2023 she backed the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act alongside Democratic and Republican members of Congress. The bipartisan bill passed both chambers in the last months of the 118th United States Congress and was signed into law by President Joe Biden.

Her charity work is older. She has donated US$100,000 or more to Children's Hospital Los Angeles, which named a room in her honor in 2008. Starlight honored her with the 2011 Heart of Gold Award, and the American Humane Association gave her its 2014 National Humanitarian Award. After the 2017 Central Mexico earthquake, she donated US$350,000 to rebuild seven homes in San Gregorio Atlapulco.

  • Writer Lili Anolik of Vanity Fair argued in 2018 that Hilton understood that movie stars need raw presence more than refined acting skills. Los Angeles Times editor Lindzi Scharf called her the woman who put the "i" in influencer. Kim Kardashian credited her with giving her a career. Tana Mongeau said Hilton taught people how to turn being famous for nothing into a business. Vice traced a line from The Simple Life to MTV's The Hills, Bravo's Real Housewives, and TLC's Dance Moms.

The machinery around her grew too. At that time a single paparazzi photograph of her could fetch anywhere from US$8,000 to US$1 million. Gossip blogs such as PerezHilton.com emerged in her wake. Her tracksuits and trucker hats helped popularize Juicy Couture and Von Dutch. A 2011 report from The Kennel Club linked her to a surge in handbag dogs.

Popular culture answered back. The characters London Tipton in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and Caroline Channing in 2 Broke Girls were loosely based on her. World of Warcraft has featured a socialite character called Haris Pilton since the 15th of January 2007. Madame Tussauds unveiled her wax figure in 2005. In 2006 the street artist Banksy replaced 500 copies of her album in 48 UK record shops with his own version. His track titles included "Why Am I Famous?" On the 29th of August 2006, the mayor of Las Vegas proclaimed Paris Hilton Day and gave her a key to the city. In Warsaw, a sociologist known as Jej Perfekcyjność organized an International Paris Hilton Day from 2006, ending it permanently in 2013. In September 2009, her line "Dress cute wherever you go; life is too short to blend in" was added to The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.

Her romantic life was covered just as closely. Singer Nick Carter wrote in his 2013 autobiography that she was the worst person in the world for him to hook up with, because she fed his worst impulses. She was engaged to Jason Shaw, Paris Latsis, and Chris Zylka, and each engagement ended. She became engaged to businessman Carter Reum on the 13th of February 2021, and they married in Los Angeles on the 11th of November 2021, the day her Peacock series Paris in Love premiered. They have a son and a daughter, both born via surrogacy in 2023. On the 8th of January 2025, Hilton reported that the Palisades Fire had destroyed her home in Malibu.
