Ben Stiller
Ben Stiller's films have grossed more than $2.6 billion in Canada and the United States, an average of $79 million per film. Behind that figure stands Benjamin Edward Meara Stiller, an American actor, comedian, and filmmaker. He is known for a mix of slapstick and sharp wit. Since the mid-2010s, though, his main work has been directing and running television series rather than starring in big comedies. How did a New York childhood shape a career built on parody? What did he make before the hits arrived? And why does he dismiss the label attached to his circle of collaborators?
Ben Stiller was born on the 30th of November 1965 in New York City and raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. His father, the comedian and actor Jerry Stiller, was the son of Ashkenazi Jewish parents who had emigrated from Galicia in Poland. His mother, the actress and comedian Anne Meara, came from an Irish Catholic background and converted to Reform Judaism after her marriage. The household was never very religious, yet the family celebrated both Hanukkah and Christmas, and Ben had a bar mitzvah.
When Ben was 6, his parents took him along to the set of The Mike Douglas Show, one of many appearances he tagged along to. He later called his childhood unusual, full of travel and late nights, a show-business upbringing rather than a traditional one. His older sister, Amy, would appear in many of his productions, including Reality Bites, DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story, and Zoolander. As kids, the two made Super 8 movies with friends.
At age 9, Stiller made his acting debut as a guest on Kate McShane, his mother's short-lived television series. In the late 1970s he joined a New York troupe, NYC's First All Children's Theater, and played several roles, including the title part in Clever Jack and the Magic Beanstalk. Around age 15 he won a one-line part on the soap opera Guiding Light, though he later called his own performance poor. Watching Second City Television in high school showed him what he wanted next, which was sketch comedy.
Capital Punishment, a post-punk band with Stiller on drums, released the studio album Roadkill in 1982. Its bassist, Peter Swann, later served as a judge on the Arizona Court of Appeals from 2008 until 2022. The band reunited in 2018 for an EP called This is Capital Punishment, issued for Record Store Day. Stiller attended The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine and graduated from the Calhoun School in New York in 1983.
After school he opened for the cabaret performer Jadin Wong, then enrolled as a film student at the University of California, Los Angeles. Nine months later he left and returned to New York City. There he worked through acting classes and auditions while hunting for an agent. The next opportunity came on a Broadway stage in 1986.
John Guare's The House of Blue Leaves returned to Broadway in 1986 with Stiller in the cast beside John Mahoney, and the revival earned four Tony Awards. During the run, Stiller produced a satirical mockumentary about Mahoney, and the cast and crew enjoyed it. He followed with a 10-minute short called The Hustler of Money, a parody of Martin Scorsese's The Color of Money. Stiller sent up Tom Cruise's character, while Mahoney took the Paul Newman role as a bowling hustler instead of a pool shark.
Saturday Night Live noticed the short and aired it in 1987. Two years later the show offered Stiller a job as a writer. In the meantime he had landed a bit part in Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun. In 1989 he wrote for the show and performed as a featured player. The show did not want him making more short films, so he left after four episodes.
Elvis Stories came next, a short film about a fictitious tabloid obsessed with recent sightings of Elvis Presley. Friends and co-stars filled the cast: John Cusack, Jeremy Piven, Mike Myers, Andy Dick, and Jeff Kahn. The film was considered a success. It led Stiller to make Going Back to Brooklyn for MTV, a music video starring the comedian Colin Quinn that parodied LL Cool J's hit "Going Back to Cali."
MTV producers liked that video enough to offer Stiller a 13-episode series in an experimental format they called "vid-com." Titled The Ben Stiller Show, the 1990 series mixed comedy sketches with music videos and parodied television shows, music stars, and films. Harry O'Reilly joined Stiller on screen, and his parents and sister made occasional appearances. MTV cancelled it after one season.
That was not the end. A second show with the same name arrived on the Fox network in 1992 and aired 12 episodes. A 13th episode never aired on Fox and was broadcast later by Comedy Central in a revival. Stiller and Judd Apatow were among the principal writers, and the ensemble cast included Janeane Garofalo, Andy Dick, and Bob Odenkirk. Denise Richards and Jeanne Tripplehorn each turned up as extras in various episodes.
Throughout its short run the Fox show often sat at the bottom of the ratings, even as it drew critical acclaim. After it was gone, it won an Emmy Award for writing. Also in 1992, a different kind of offer reached Stiller: a request to direct a feature film.
Helen Childress wrote the script for Reality Bites, and Stiller spent the next year and a half rewriting it with her, raising money, and recruiting cast members. Before that he had played minor roles in Stella and Highway to Hell and had a cameo in The Nutt House. Reality Bites reached theaters in early 1994 with Stiller directing and co-starring. Danny DeVito produced it, and he would later direct Stiller's 2003 film Duplex and produce Along Came Polly in 2004. The film opened as the fifth highest-grossing release over the Presidents Day weekend and drew mixed reviews.
The Cable Guy followed in 1996, starring Jim Carrey, with Stiller once again appearing in his own film, this time as twins. Reviews were mixed. The film was noted, however, for the biggest actor's salary up to that point: Carrey received $20 million. It also introduced Stiller to two future Frat Pack colleagues, Jack Black and Owen Wilson.
That same year MTV invited Stiller to host the VH1 Fashion Awards. With the Saturday Night Live writer Drake Sather, he built a short film about a male model named Derek Zoolander. Audiences liked it so much that he made a second short for the 1997 awards. Eventually he remade the character's story as a feature. Zoolander, released in 2001, was his third film as director, and he starred in it too.
The film packed in cameos from Donald Trump, Paris Hilton, Lenny Kravitz, Heidi Klum, and David Bowie, among others. Malaysia banned it because the plot centered on an assassination attempt against a Malaysian prime minister. After the September 11 attacks, shots of the World Trade Center were digitally removed and hidden for the release.
Tropic Thunder began as an idea Stiller had in 1987, while he was filming his small part in Empire of the Sun. In 2008 he directed it, co-wrote it, co-produced it, and starred alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black. He produced, directed, and starred in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, released in 2013. Zoolander 2 followed in 2016, with Stiller again directing and starring, and it was a critical failure.
Television became his main stage after that. In 2018 he directed the Showtime miniseries Escape at Dannemora. It earned him a Directors Guild of America Award on the 2nd of February 2019, along with two Primetime Emmy nominations, for Outstanding Limited Series and Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series. Since 2022 he has directed many episodes of the Apple TV+ series Severance and served as an executive producer, earning four Primetime Emmy nominations.
In 2021 Stiller signed on to co-write and direct Bag Man, a Focus Features adaptation of a 2018 podcast. The podcast covered the kickback scandal that ended in the resignation of Vice President Spiro Agnew. As of October 2023 the movie was still in pre-production, with filming scheduled to begin in Washington, DC and Budapest in November 2025.
Cameron Diaz played opposite Stiller in the Farrelly Brothers' There's Something About Mary in 1998. It was a surprise hit with a long-lasting cult following, and Stiller had set aside his directing plans to make it. That year he also starred in the dramas Zero Effect, Your Friends & Neighbors, and Permanent Midnight. He hosted part of the MTV Video Music Awards, too, with a Backstreet Boys parody and a sketch with his father about his current career.
Mystery Men, one of three films he starred in during 1999, cast him as a superhero wannabe called Mr. Furious. To promote it, he appeared on an episode of WWF's RAW is WAR on the 26th of July. There he ended up in Intercontinental Champion Jeff Jarrett's Figure-4 Leg Lock.
In 2000 came one of his most recognizable roles, Gaylord "Greg" Focker, a male nurse meeting his girlfriend's father in Meet the Parents. Robert De Niro played that father. Critics received the film well, it grossed over $330 million worldwide, and it spawned two sequels. That year MTV also invited him to make another short, Mission: Improbable, a spoof of Tom Cruise's role in Mission: Impossible II and other films.
Two years of supporting work followed, including a starring role in Duplex and cameos in Orange County and Nobody Knows Anything! He also guest-starred on The King of Queens, in a flashback as the father of a character played by Jerry Stiller. He appeared on WWE Raw as well.
In 2004 Stiller appeared in six comedies, among them some of his highest-grossing films. They were Starsky & Hutch, Envy, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Along Came Polly, and Meet the Fockers. Envy, co-starring Jack Black, was a critical flop that earned only $14.5 million. Meet the Fockers was the biggest winner, grossing over $516.6 million worldwide. Anchorman gave him only an uncredited cameo. That year he also made extended guest appearances on Curb Your Enthusiasm and Arrested Development. A turn on Extras brought a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.
Madagascar, in 2005, was his first job as a voice actor in an animated film. It became a massive worldwide hit, with sequels in 2008 and 2012. In December 2006 he led Night at the Museum, which was not a critical favorite but earned over $115 million in ten days. In 2007 he starred with Malin Åkerman in the romantic comedy The Heartbreak Kid, which earned over $100 million worldwide despite mostly negative reviews.
Amy Adams joined him for Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian in 2009. In 2010 he made a brief cameo in Joaquin Phoenix's mockumentary I'm Still Here and led the comedy-drama Greenberg. He also returned as Greg Focker in Little Fockers, critically panned but financially successful. He had planned to voice the title role in Megamind with Robert Downey Jr. but dropped out, and Will Ferrell replaced him. Stiller stayed on as an executive producer and voiced a museum curator named Bernard. In 2011 he starred with Eddie Murphy and Alan Alda in Tower Heist, about maintenance workers planning a heist in a residential skyscraper.
Independent films filled the gaps. He starred in Flirting with Disaster, appeared in The Royal Tenenbaums, and worked with the director Noah Baumbach on While We're Young and The Meyerowitz Stories. In 1995 he had joined his parents for the family film Heavyweights, playing two roles. A year later he took an uncredited part in Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore as Hal L., the sadistic orderly running a nursing home.
In 2018 and 2019 he played Michael Cohen on Saturday Night Live for six episodes. Then, in 2024, he returned to acting after seven years with the holiday films Nutcrackers and Dear Santa. In Dear Santa, which also featured Jack Black, he played an uncredited role. While promoting the films he appeared on the interview show Hot Ones. That year it was announced that he and De Niro were in talks for a fourth Meet the Parents film. In December 2024 he sang the song "Drive" in a music video trailer for the singer SZA's album Lana.
He reprised Hal L. in Happy Gilmore 2, which premiered on the 25th of July 2025. He also was confirmed for The Dink, a 2025 comedy about pickleball directed by Josh Greenbaum and co-produced with Stiller.
Of the 35 primary films considered Frat Pack films, Stiller has been involved with 20 in some capacity. The group includes Jack Black, Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson, Steve Carell, and Paul Rudd. Stiller is described as its acknowledged leader because of his many cameos and his steady habit of casting the others in films he produces and directs. He has appeared most often with Owen Wilson, in 12 films.
Fresh Horses sets him apart from the rest of the group. It was a Brat Pack film, and Stiller is the only Frat Pack member to have appeared in one. He still rejects the Frat Pack label. In a 2008 interview he called the concept "completely fabricated."
Bono, Tom Cruise, Bruce Springsteen, and David Blaine are among the performers Stiller impersonates. In an interview with Parade he named Robert Klein, George Carlin, and Jimmie Walker as inspirations for his own comedy career. He is also a self-professed Trekkie. He appeared in the television special Star Trek: 30 Years and Beyond to express his love of the show, and in a comedy roast for William Shatner. His production company, Red Hour Productions, takes its name from a time of day in the original series episode "The Return of the Archons."
In 1999 he co-wrote a New York Times bestseller with Janeane Garofalo, Feel This Book: An Essential Guide to Self-Empowerment, Spiritual Supremacy, and Sexual Satisfaction. It spoofed the self-help books that were everywhere at the time. He is a New York Knicks fan, and he is often seen at Madison Square Garden watching games. In September 2025 he launched a soda brand, Stiller's Soda, which is available in New York City.
Before his marriage, Stiller dated several actresses, including Jeanne Tripplehorn between 1990 and 1996, Calista Flockhart, and Amanda Peet. In May 2000 he married the actress Christine Taylor at an oceanfront ceremony in Kauai, Hawaii. They had met in 1999 while filming Heat Vision and Jack, a spoof series starring Jack Black that Fox never picked up after its pilot. Taylor later appeared with him in Zoolander, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Tropic Thunder, Zoolander 2, Arrested Development, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Both adopted a vegetarian diet for health reasons. After 17 years of marriage, the couple separated in 2017. They later reconciled after living together during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. They live in Westchester County, New York, and in Manhattan. They have two children, a daughter, Ella Olivia, born in 2002, and a son, Quinlin "Quinn" Dempsey, born in 2005. Ella graduated from the Juilliard School with a degree in acting on the 24th of May 2024.
In June 2014 Stiller was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Surgeons removed his prostate, and by September 2014 he was declared cancer-free.
A different health story was false. A joke he made in a 1999 GQ interview fed reports about his mental health. In interviews with The Hollywood Reporter in 2011 and The Times in 2018, he clarified that he does not have bipolar disorder. He said the original comment was taken out of context and mistakenly presented as fact by the reporter. Within months of that second clarification, in July 2018, he took on a new public role.
On the 2nd of July 2018, Stiller was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR. In June 2022 he traveled to Kyiv to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whom he calls his "hero." On the same trip he visited Lviv, Irpin, and Makariv to draw attention to the humanitarian needs of refugees in Poland and Ukraine. Russia sanctioned him over his support for Ukraine.
Earlier charity work had a more playful setting. In 2001 he appeared as a celebrity contestant on the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and won $32,000 for his charity, Project ALS. He missed his $250,000 question while trying to match the $250,000 that Edie Falco had won. He also supports Declare Yourself, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and the Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation.
In 2024 Stiller wrote about the Gaza war in a Time magazine article. He spoke about his Polish and Jewish heritage and argued for a two-state solution. He expressed solidarity with both Israeli and Palestinian citizens and criticized both the Israeli government and Hamas.
Stiller supports the Democratic Party and donated to John Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign. In February 2007 he attended a fundraiser for Barack Obama. He later gave to the 2008 campaigns of Obama, John Edwards, and Hillary Clinton. In the 2024 election he supported Vice President Kamala Harris.
The Teen Choice Awards nominated him twelve times, and he won once, for "Choice Hissy Fit" in Zoolander. The MTV Movie Awards nominated him thirteen times. He won three: "Best Fight" for There's Something About Mary, "Best Comedic Performance" for Meet the Parents, and "Best Villain" for DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story. In 2009 the ceremony gave him its top honor, the MTV Generation Award.
On the 31st of March 2007 he received the "Wannabe Award" at the Kids' Choice Awards, given to a celebrity whom children want to be like. Princeton University's Class of 2005 made him an honorary member during Senior Week in April 2005. On the 23rd of February 2007, Harvard's Hasty Pudding Theatricals named him Man of the Year. In 2011 BAFTA Los Angeles gave him the Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy. In 2014 he was nominated for Best Actor at the 40th Saturn Awards for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
His most unusual trophy came on the 6th of February 2016, at the world premiere of Zoolander 2. There he set a Guinness World Record for the longest selfie stick, at 8.56 meters.
