  • Monica Bellucci was 50 years old when she appeared in the 2015 James Bond film Spectre. That made her the oldest Bond girl in the history of the franchise. She was sceptical of the project at first. Director Sam Mendes argued that casting a mature woman in a Bond film would be innovative. Bellucci came to feel gratified at being the first to play what she called a "James Bond lady".

Bellucci is an Italian actress, born in 1964, who began her working life as a fashion model. She went on to work in Italian, American, and French cinema, and her filmography runs across many genres and languages. Critics have praised her, shocked festival audiences have booed her, and luxury brands have built campaigns around her face.

How does a woman who never planned to act end up at the centre of three national film industries? Why did an actress so celebrated for her looks keep choosing parts that made audiences uneasy? And what does it mean to be treated as an emblem of one country while living in another? The answers begin in a small town beside the Tiber.

  • Monica Anna Maria Bellucci was born in Città di Castello, Umbria, on the 30th of September 1964. Her father, Pasquale Bellucci, owned a trucking company. Her mother, Brunella Briganti, was a housewife and an amateur painter. Monica was an only child, because her parents did not want another. The family lived in Selci-Lama, in the municipality of San Giustino, on the banks of the Tiber River. She received a Catholic education. Her father remembered an intelligent, discreet girl who grew steadily more interested in fashion, and who grew up "surrounded by love".

At the age of 13, Bellucci posed for a photographer who was a friend of the family. It was her first brush with modelling, and she was not at ease with attention. She kept apart from other children, took long detours home from school, and avoided the public spaces of the town. Her father said she complained that everyone stared at her. He worked to build up her self-confidence.

The films of Vittorio De Sica, Federico Fellini, Roberto Rossellini, Luchino Visconti, Marcel Carné, and Jean-Luc Godard gave her a taste for cinema. She has said that her cheerful outlook owes much to her upbringing. In her words: "Certainly a lot of positivity also depends on the climate in which my parents raised me".

At 16, a friend of her father, the director of a fashion agency, asked her to pose for photography sessions. She started travelling to Milan and Paris while she kept studying in Città di Castello. Many of the models she worked with were ten years older than she was. "I approached the adult universe very early", she later said.

Piero Montanucci, a hairdresser from Città di Castello, met her while she was hitchhiking and persuaded her to become his model. She was then a student at the liceo classico, where she studied philosophy, literature, Latin, and Greek. In 1983, the local fashion entrepreneur Pina Alberti dressed her for a show at the Teatro degli Illuminati, the city's municipal theatre. The event was called Momento Donna, and Maria Giovanna Elmi hosted it. Montanucci came along as her mentor.

Bellucci then enrolled in law at the University of Perugia, hoping to become a lawyer. She paid for her studies with modelling work arranged through her father's friend. A friend urged her to apply to agencies, and she moved to Milan, one of Europe's fashion centres. The agent Piero Piazzi had first seen her in 1987 and told her she was "not ready". Later he watched her arrive at the Elite Model Management agency and thought she could have been an actress. Between 1988 and 1989, Elite signed her to a contract.

In 1988, Oliviero Toscani photographed her for the cover of Elle France, and she also appeared on the cover of Vogue Spain. The travel that Elite demanded led her to leave university. She later said that being a lawyer would not have suited her. Dolce & Gabbana recruited her as their muse, because her physical attributes matched the image its founders wanted to project. By 1989, she was living in New York and was already a millionaire.

  • In 1990, the French luxury house Dior used Bellucci's image and name for its Haute Couture line. Richard Avedon photographed her. She became the "protagonist" of Dolce & Gabbana's campaigns, which "elevated her to an icon of Mediterranean beauty". She also walked in fashion shows for Fendi.

In 1991, the cosmetics company L'Oréal made her its brand ambassador. That year she also appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, in photographs taken in the Caribbean. Givenchy, Nina Ricci, Yves Saint Laurent, and Versace were among the other houses that advertised with her. In 1993, the director Giuseppe Tornatore met her for the first time, when he directed her in a television advertisement for Dolce & Gabbana perfume.

In 1997, at the age of 33, Bellucci was photographed by Avedon for the Pirelli Calendar. Calendars became a regular part of her work in the 1990s. Photographers who shot her for them included Fabrizio Ferri, for the magazine Max, and Gian Paolo Barbieri, for GQ in 2000. The Italian company Breil also appointed her its brand ambassador.

The same year, 1997, brought the partnership that would define her relationship with luxury. Cartier named her its brand ambassador and muse. Nina Hald of the Danish newspaper Berlingske wrote: "Cartier chose for the first time to associate an actress closely with the house". Cartier followed her through her acting career, dressing her in high jewellery on red carpets. In 2004, it became public that she was the only actress contractually bound to the house. In 2007, at an event in Dubai, Cartier presented a collection of diamond jewellery inspired by her and bearing her name.

In 2006, Dior named her a brand ambassador and the face of a range of its products, a role she held until 2010. She also used her image for causes. In 2004, while pregnant with her first child, she posed nude for the Italian cover of Vanity Fair. It was a protest against Italian laws that restricted access to in vitro fertilisation. In April 2010, she again posed semi-nude, pregnant, for the cover of Vanity Fair Italy.

The campaigns kept coming. Martini Gold, a collaboration with Dolce & Gabbana, used her in a 2010 television advertisement. The cashmere maker Éric Bompard chose her for its winter 2011-2012 campaign, and in 2012 she was the face of an eponymous Dolce & Gabbana lipstick range. Nivea picked her for its 2018 and 2019 campaigns.

In June 2018, she opened the second day of Milan Fashion Week in a Dolce & Gabbana show. According to Stefano Gabbana, it was her first catwalk for the house since 1992. She walked for the house again in early 2019, alongside Helena Christensen, Eva Herzigová, and Isabella Rossellini. They were among the 1990s supermodels returning to the spotlight. In the 2020s, Bellucci remained Cartier's "muse" and ambassador.

  • In 1990, the director Carlo Vanzina noticed a photograph of Bellucci in a magazine. He recommended her to Dino Risi, who was looking for a "new face" for his television miniseries Vita coi figli. Bellucci had never thought of becoming an actress, and she was surprised to be chosen. The two-part production was broadcast in Italy in May 1991, with Bellucci as Elda. Her film debut came the same year in La Riffa, directed by Francesco Laudadio.

In 1992, Roman Coppola saw a photograph of her in the Italian magazine Zoom. He implored his father, Francis Ford Coppola, to offer her a film role. The elder Coppola arranged a meeting in Los Angeles while she was in New York for a photography session. After talking with him, Bellucci realised she would embark on an acting career. She played one of the three brides of Dracula in Bram Stoker's Dracula, a part she described as a "sensual vampire". It was her international film debut.

Coppola asked her to stay in Los Angeles during the shoot. She felt uneasy in the city and believed her English needed work. She decided that her next acting job would be in Italy.

Back in Italy, Bellucci enrolled in acting classes. "I craved it... I needed to act", she said. It was a hard stretch, because all of her friends were leaving the faculty at the time. She struggled against prejudice about her modelling and her looks, and she had to work to establish her credibility. For the next four years, she starred in Italian films but grew dissatisfied with the lack of opportunities. She wanted an international career.

In 1995, she appeared in the Emmy-winning biblical miniseries Joseph. In her view, the Italian film industry needed to invest more money to promote its films abroad. She moved to France that year and settled in Paris.

In 1996, Bellucci played Lisa in The Apartment, a "moody" French film noir and her first French-language film. It earned her a César Award nomination for Most Promising Actress. Gavanndra Hodge of The Sunday Times called it her "break-out role". The BBC's Almar Haflidason described it as "seductive" and "startling" and gave it five stars.

Pierce Brosnan performed a screen test with her for Tomorrow Never Dies (1997). He then asked that she be given the role of Paris Carver. The studio said only an American actress could be cast. In 1998, she won a Globo d'oro Award for Best Actress for her lead role as Giulia Giovannini in the Italian comedy-drama L'ultimo capodanno.

Then The Apartment won a British Academy Film Award for Best Film not in the English language. The win made the director Stephen Hopkins take a close interest in Bellucci.

  • At the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, Under Suspicion was selected as one of the closing films, and it marked Bellucci's red-carpet debut at the event. It was her first English-language lead, opposite Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman. Hopkins kept her ideas for the character Chantal Hearst. Garth Pearce, writing in The Times, noted that her spoken English had improved. Freeman said: "It's all there in her eyes. She has this quality that reminds me of Jeanne Moreau. There is a sense of having been there, that she's had a life." Variety listed her among "the ten young actresses to keep an eye on".

Malèna, also from 2000, was set in Sicily and directed by Tornatore. Bellucci played Malèna Scordia, an enigmatic and coveted World War II widow whose life unfolds before a 13-year-old boy. Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times found her portrayal "heroic", delivered with very few lines. Mark Salisbury of The Guardian called it her "breakout performance". The Oscar-nominated film gave her worldwide attention and left her "besieged by offers" from Hollywood once Miramax secured US distribution. For the American release, ten minutes of explicit, erotic scenes were censored.

In 2001, she starred in Christophe Gans' Brotherhood of the Wolf alongside Samuel Le Bihan and Vincent Cassel. The French period drama drew on the beast of Gévaudan, which killed so many people in 18th-century Lozère. Bellucci played a courtesan and papist spy. Stephen Hunter of The Washington Post felt the film's dense style hid her "fabulous natural asset", though other critics reacted well. It drew five million viewers in France and earned $11 million in the US. Bellucci received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the 2002 Saturn Awards.

Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra (2002) was one of her favourite film experiences, thanks to its light-hearted comic atmosphere. Directed by Alain Chabat, with Jamel Debbouze in the cast, it cast her as a "prickly" Cleopatra. It sold 14 million tickets in France and grossed more than $128 million worldwide. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian wrote that she was talented enough to merit Cleopatra in some serious treatment.

The same year, she co-starred with Cassel in Gaspar Noé's "violent" arthouse thriller Irréversible. The revenge film was shot on Super 16 with hand-held cameras. Bellucci played Alex, who is graphically raped for nine uninterrupted minutes in an underpass, a scene she had to film four times. At the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, audiences were outraged at the midnight premiere, and some called it "unsustainable". Noé said he had "never seen an actress so charismatic... with that much guts". K. Austin Collins of Rolling Stone later named it "one of the most controversial movies ever", and film schools have studied it.

In 2003, Bellucci won the Nastro d'Argento for Best Supporting Actress for Gabriele Muccino's Remember Me, My Love, in which she played Alessia. She also co-starred with Bruce Willis in Antoine Fuqua's Tears of the Sun, set during a civil war in Nigeria. There she played Doctor Lena Kendricks, who works for a humanitarian organisation. Reviews were mixed and the film disappointed at the box office.

That year she also played Persephone in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. She described the character as "dangerous, sensual with some sense of humor". The shoot took place in Australia, and she recalled fond times with Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, and Keanu Reeves. Lambert Wilson played the Merovingian, her screen husband. Reloaded grossed $742.1 million worldwide against a $150 million budget. Revolutions grossed $427 million against a production and marketing budget of $185 million.

  • In Rome, before filming Tears of the Sun, Bellucci learned that Mel Gibson was making a film about Jesus, and she asked to meet him about Mary Magdalene. Her agent advised against it, because the film's distribution was still undetermined and it might fail. She ignored the advice and turned down another offer. Gibson chose her because they "liked each other". She wanted Mary Magdalene to be "strong and deep", though no-one believed the film would succeed.

The Passion of the Christ (2004) became a major commercial success, earning over $611 million worldwide against a budget of $30 million. Critics were divided. A. O. Scott of The New York Times singled her out as the exception to the "absence of identifiable movie stars". Roger Ebert called it "the most violent film I have ever seen" and gave it four stars out of four. Some Catholics objected to Bellucci playing Magdalene.

The film's dialogue is in Aramaic and Latin, which she had to learn quickly. Languages became a habit. For Dobermann (1997), in which she played a mute Romani woman, she learned sign language. She has said she likes staging that passes "more through bodies than through words". For Rhino Season (2012), she learned Persian. For On the Milky Road (2016), director Emir Kusturica asked her to learn her dialogue in Serbian. She also dubbed her own voice for the French and Italian releases of Shoot 'Em Up, noting that she often made each film three times.

Her choices often favoured the unusual over the obvious. In 2006, she said she declined a role in the blockbuster 300 and made The Stone Council instead. It was adapted from a novel by Jean-Christophe Grangé, and her hair was cut short for it. She was cast after Sophie Marceau had first been announced for the lead. In The Second Wind, a remake of Jean-Pierre Melville's 1966 gangster film, she proposed dyeing her hair blonde in the style of 1950s and 1960s film noir women. Le Monde reported the commercial failure of both films in November 2007.

Bellucci played prostitutes in How Much Do You Love Me? (2005) and Shoot 'Em Up (2007). In the first, she was Daniela, the most beautiful prostitute in Pigalle, Paris, opposite Gérard Depardieu. In the second, she was Donna Quintano, who teams up with Clive Owen's Mr Smith to protect a baby. She said she felt empathy for female sex workers, who she believes retain "faith in humanity".

Terry Gilliam, who directed The Brothers Grimm (2005), said that when she comes on-screen the whole film lifts "into another realm, a realm of sex and sensuality and danger". In it she played the 500-year-old Mirror Queen opposite Matt Damon and Heath Ledger.

She also felt a "visceral" need to act in Italian films. In 2008, she co-starred in Marco Tullio Giordana's Wild Blood as Luisa Ferida, a leading actress under Italian fascism. In 2010, she played Laura Leviani in The Whistleblower, about a human trafficking network in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina. She made three films in seven months, including The Ages of Love (2011), where Robert De Niro said she had "worked her magic" on him. In 2014, she played a televised contest host in Alice Rohrwacher's The Wonders, which won the Grand Prix at Cannes. In Ville-Marie (2015), she played an actress visiting Montreal, and she won the Best Actress Award from the Dublin Film Critics' Circle.

Of On the Milky Road, which was shot over four summers in a "land of beauty and violence", she said: "I decided to be an actress, not a politician. I recount political choices through my artistic choices." Variety's Guy Lodge called her one of cinema's most restlessly globe-trotting stars. She earned the Nastro d'Argento europeo on the 1st of July 2017, at the ancient theatre of Taormina in Sicily.

In 2017, she played a fictional version of herself in Twin Peaks, in a dream experienced by FBI Deputy Director Gordon Cole, played by David Lynch. She dines with him in Paris and gives him cryptic information. The season's Blu-ray release titles the episode "We Are Like the Dreamer", a line she speaks.

  • The writer and director Tom Volf, after making his documentary Maria by Callas (2017), proposed a project based on his book of the opera singer's writings. Bellucci made her theatrical debut in it at the Marigny Theatre in Paris, from the 27th of November to the 6th of December 2019. Maria Callas: Letters and Memoirs is a one-woman show directed by Volf. Alone on stage, Bellucci recites letters while wearing two dresses that belonged to Callas.

She has performed it intermittently for years. It has played Venice's Teatro Goldoni and Athens's Odeon of Herodes Atticus, where an orchestra accompanied her and 4,000 people attended each night. In 2022, she took it to Her Majesty's Theatre in London, the Chatelet Theatre in Paris, and venues in Istanbul and Los Angeles. In January 2023, at 58, she performed it at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. In 2024, she won a Nastro d'Argento as Protagonist of the Year in Documentaries for her interpretation of Callas.

On screen, 2018 found her in lighter territory. In the Australian comedy science-fiction horror film Nekrotronic, she played a necromancer and demonic soul-eater. Stephen Dalton of The Hollywood Reporter called her performance "operatic camp-vamp" and said her style suited films by Tim Burton and Guillermo del Toro. That year, she also played herself, with self-mockery, in the third season of the France 2 series Dix pour cent, which Netflix later retitled Call My Agent!. In 2019, she had a cameo as Elena in Claude Lelouch's The Best Years of a Life.

In 2020, she played Soraya in Kaouther Ben Hania's Oscar-nominated The Man Who Sold His Skin. Stephanie Zacharek of Time wrote of "a deviously silky-smooth Monica Bellucci". In 2021, at the 66th David di Donatello ceremony, she received a David Special Award for her career achievements.

In Martin Campbell's action thriller Memory (2022), she played Davana Sealman, an unscrupulous real-estate magnate, opposite Liam Neeson and Guy Pearce. She was drawn to the duality of the villain and wanted to avoid typecasting based on her looks, which she had experienced before. Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly was unimpressed and called the film "wrapped in leaden dialogue and B-movie cliché".

Recalling Irréversible in 2023, she told The New York Times that her days of acting in transgressive movies were behind her because she is a mother. That year, she entered talks to play Delores, Betelgeuse's ex-wife and the villain, in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which came out in 2024.

  • Bellucci was mistress of ceremonies at the 56th Cannes Film Festival, opening and closing it between the 14th and the 25th of May 2003. She sat on the jury of the 59th festival, from the 17th to the 28th of May 2006. She returned as master of ceremonies for the 70th festival. In 2017, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited her to become a permanent member representing Italy, which gives her a vote on the Oscars. She chaired the judging panel of the 29th Dinard British Film Festival from the 26th to the 30th of September 2018.

France honoured her twice. In 2006, Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy made her a knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. In 2016, President François Hollande presented her with the knight insignia of the Legion of Honour at the Elysée Palace. In 2020, Mayor Dario Nardella gave her the Key to the City of Florence. Stefano Montefiori of Corriere della Sera has described her as a kind of ambassador of Italy to the French. On the 21st of November 2012, she attended the Elysée Palace dinner Hollande hosted for Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. On the 5th of July 2021, she was a guest at Emmanuel Macron's state dinner for President Sergio Mattarella and his daughter Laura.

On the 23rd of November 2004, she pressed the button that lit the Christmas illuminations on the Champs-Élysées, 45 km of garlands running from the Place de l'Étoile towards Place de la Concorde. She was the first foreign public figure invited to do so. In April 2005, the Grévin Museum in Paris unveiled a wax statue of her.

She has used her name for causes. In 2008, she backed a fundraising campaign for a centre for children with cancer in Prima Porta, Italy. In 2010, she became patron of Paroles de Femmes, a French association promoting equality between men and women. She organised the Nuit des Femmes in March 2010. A 2010 book of photographs by Peter Lindbergh and Helmut Newton, prefaced by Tornatore, sent all proceeds to two associations. She donated €10,000 to the City of Cannes after the deadly floods of October 2015. She is also a patron of SOS Autism France.

Bellucci married the Italian photographer Claudio Carlos Basso in Monte-Carlo on the 3rd of January 1990. They divorced a year later. She then spent several years with the actor Nicola Farron, whom she met in 1990 on the set of Vita coi figli. They separated in 1995.

That year, she met the French actor Vincent Cassel on the set of The Apartment. They married in Monaco at the beginning of August 1999. Their daughters, Deva and Léonie, were born in Rome on the 12th of September 2004 and the 21st of May 2010. Critic Jason Solomons called them "the golden couple of European cinema". They acted together in nine films between 1996 and 2006. Their separation "by mutual agreement" was announced on the 26th of August 2013, and they later divorced.

Her later relationships drew press attention. She dated the sculptor Nicolas Lefebvre from 2017 and made it official in March 2019, and the relationship was reported over in early July 2019. In February 2023, Paris Match reported a relationship with the American filmmaker Tim Burton that began in October 2022. She confirmed it in June 2023, and they made their first public appearance at the Rome Film Festival in October 2023. It ended in September 2025.

Bellucci speaks Italian, French, and English fluently and is proficient in Portuguese and Spanish. By 2015, she had decided to live in France. She still says: "I am entirely Italian. Everything about me is Italian". She votes in Italy and has no French nationality. She owns houses in Rome and Lisbon, and in 2023 she bought a villa on the Greek island of Paros. She calls herself an agnostic: "I come from a Catholic religion, but I'm not Catholic".

In 2018, French tax authorities investigated her over undeclared Swiss accounts linked to an offshore company in the British Virgin Islands. They sought to recover taxes for the years 2011-2013. Her lawyer said she lived in the UK, not Paris. In September 2021, Bellucci said she was "up to date with my tax obligations both in France and abroad". The investigation's results remain undisclosed. She was later named in the Pandora Papers, published in October 2021. In 2018, Forbes valued her wealth at $45 million and ranked her the third-richest Italian actor.

Ipsos named her the "Most Beautiful Woman in the World" in 2004 and 2007, in surveys of about 1,000 people in France commissioned by TF1. AskMen put her first in its 2002 list of desirable women, and NRJ 12 voted her number one in 2011. In 2012, she said she had never had cosmetic procedures: "Compared to a plastic face, I prefer wrinkles." In 2018, Forbes Italy included her among the 100 successful Italian women. In 2023, she said that being "objectified" in her film career did not bother her. Christophe Narbonne of Première magazine wrote that behind the advertising muse we sometimes forget the out-of-norm actress who collected many international auteurs.

Her reach extends beyond Europe. The Tamil director Lokesh Kanagaraj and composer Anirudh Ravichander say they are huge fans. A song inspired by her, named "Monica", appeared on the soundtrack of the 2025 Tamil film Coolie.
